• A hybrid system and procedure for measuring the incident poweron the aperture of solar receivers have been demonstrated.

• The advantages of each of the approaches enrich the overall systemand thereby the measurements made with it.

• Working with both systems, it is possible to detect changes in theircalibration.

• The good agreement betweeen the two methods allows the use of aheat-flux measurement system based on either the direct or the indirectconcept or hybridized, depending on the receiver geometry and the sizeof the area to be scanned.

SUMMARY 2

• An alternative method of calibrating high-heat flux sensors bythermal balance has been presented. The results are in agreementwith calibrations obtained using black-body radiation. However, theproposed method has the potential of being more accurate thantraditional approaches.

• At present, the thermal balance calibration technique in thelaboratory is limited to solar irradiances of approximately 100 kW m-2.The next step is to demonstrate this methodology to higherirradiances under non-laboratory conditions in the CIEMAT solarfurnace at Plataforma Solar de Almería.

• This new procedure calibrates sensors to correctly measure underconditions of concentrated solar radiation.

SUMMARY 3

• This procedure has enabled these sensors to be calibrated underconcentrated solar radiation at high irradiances in the CIEMAT solarfurnace at the Plataforma Solar de Almería.

• This work has experimentally confirmed the predicted systematicerrors in measuring high solar irradiances using Gardon sensorscalibrated with a black body.

• Working at high irradiances (1000 kW m-2) has allowed theuncertainty of the calibration constant of these sensors to bereduced. ± 3-4 %...........±1-2 %
