Welcome to the HeartSmart Walks programme for

June to September 2018

February 2016 to May 2016

These walks are led by volunteer Walk Leaders and are designed to cater for all ages

and abilities. The walks offer opportunities to exercise and meet new people in a

safe and friendly environment. Below is some information to help you get the most

out of them:

All walks finish at their starting point unless otherwise stated.

No booking is required but please arrive 10 minutes before the walk is due to start.

Please inform the Walk Leader if you will be leaving the walk early and sign yourself

out.

We recommend always bringing a mobile phone with the number below stored in

case of emergency.

Please wear suitable footwear and you may like to bring a drink of water.

Please note that the walks are smoke free.

Dogs are welcome unless otherwise stated but must be kept on the lead.

Timings stated on the programme are approximate.

If the weather is poor the walk may be cancelled. Please check with the office or

website if unsure (office hours Mon-Fri 8.45am-5pm).

Please read the walk description before joining the walk and ensure you are walking

at the right level for you.

Mon 4th June - 10:30 am EMSWORTH TO LANGSTONE

L: Anne M: Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 4 miles, level walk along the foreshore to Langstone returning via the fields and Warblington church. Possible refreshment break at The Ship, Langstone. Meet: Town Square, Emsworth. PO10 7AW By Car: Take the A259 from Chichester to Emsworth. At the roundabout turn left into the town centre, the town square is on the right hand side. Car park though town on the right. Note: You may need to pay for more than 2 hours parking. By Bus: 700

Mon 4th June - 10:30 am SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS CHICHESTER CANAL

L: Helen M: Time: 30 minutes Distance: 1 mile. A flat walk at a gentle pace, suitable for beginners Meet: Chichester Canal, Basin Road, Chichester PO19 8DT. By Car: From Chichester city centre go south along Basin Road to Canal Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city. By Bus: 5 minute walk from Chichester Bus Station.

Mon 4th June - 10:30 am TILLINGTON

L: Gerald M: Pete Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: Approx. 3 miles. Come and enjoy a gentle circular walk down to the River Rother through Smugglers Lane. Beautiful river setting Meet: The Horse Guards Inn, Upperton Road, Tillington, GU28 9AF. SU963 220 By Car: 1 mile west from Petworth on A272 then in the middle of Tillington, turn north following brown tourist sign to The Horse Guards. Parking in road. Tues 5th June - 10:30 am CHICHESTER MARINA TO WESTLANDS

L: Janet M: Ann Time: 1 hour 15 minutes Distance: 2½ miles A level walk to Westlands via Birdham Pool, returning via Birdham Church. Some very quiet road walking. Meet: At car park near Boathouse Cafe at Marina. By Car: From Chichester take A286 towards Witterings, turning right at sign to Chichester Marina. Follow the road to the end and park near the Boathouse Cafe. PO20 7BA. By Bus: Nos 52 or 53. Alight at Marina entrance, then walk down the road to the Marina (approx 3/4 mile) to Boathouse Cafe.

Wed 6th June - 10:45 am 10.45 Start CLIMPING

L: Dominic M: Time: 1 hour 15 minutes Distance: Approx. 2½ miles. Along dunes and beach to Climping Mill, then across fields to Ferry Road and Rope Walk to AYC. Refreshments are available at the Yacht Club on the return. Meet: 10.45am (to allow for train) at Arun Yacht Club Car Park, Rope Walk, Littlehampton, West Sussex, BN17 5DL. Your support to the club in buying refreshments is appreciated in return for free parking. By Car: Take the A259, Bognor Littlehampton Road. About ¼ mile east of Ford Road roundabout turn south into Ferry Road. Follow signs for beach and Golf Course onto Rope Walk. The Yacht Club is on west bank of the river opposite the golf club at the top of the slope. By Bus/Train: Across the footbridge opposite Littlehampton station. Turn left, the Yacht Club is about 1/3 of a mile ahead. Bus 700

Thurs 7th June - 10:30 am EARTHAM NORE HILL

L: Peter Br M: Peter & Alison Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 mile circular walk up Nore Hill, through Eartham village and along a lesser known “atmospheric” section of Stane Street. Meet: Free Forestry Commission car park on the right, ¾ of a mile north of The George PH at Eartham. Map ref SU938106. PO18 0LU By Car: Take A27 Chichester bypass towards Arundel. Half a mile before Fontwell turn left following signs to Eartham, after Z bend pass The George PH and continue north to Forestry Commission car park. Alternatively take the A285 Petworth road from Chichester with sharp right turn towards Eartham with car park soon after on the left.

Fri 8th June - 10:30 am WASHINGTON TO SULLINGTON

L: Jane M: Pete Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 5 miles A downland walk taking in the village of Sullington and parts of the South Downs Way. Hilly with stiles. Meet: Frankland Arms pub RH20 4AL (map ref TQ122130). By Car: A27 towards Worthing, left on A280 towards Findon, left on A24 to A283, right at roundabout and first right into Washington village. Park roadside

Wed 13th June - 10:30 am *NEW WALK* GRAFFHAM

L: Bruce M: Peter & Alison Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 5.2 miles. Ascent 115m. Visits Middleheath Copse, Graffham Common and Fitzlea Copse. After the walk this is a good place for a picnic. Meet: Graffham Recreation Ground. SU931176 ( Nearby postcode GU28 0QB ) http://maps.google.com/maps?t=m&z=15&q=50.9506,-0.6756 By Car: EITHER from the south via A286 to Cocking. After 1 mile turn right into Bex Lane (signposted Heyshott, Graffham). Follow the signs to Graffham. After the White Horse Pub turn left into Graffham village OR from the south via A285 to Duncton. After 1 mile turn left signposted Selham Graffham. After 1.4 miles turn left. The rec is down a lane by the war memorial close to the Foresters Arms which happily has reopened.

Thurs 14th June - 10:30 am CHANCTONBURY HILL

L: Peter Br M: Peter & Alison Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 mile circular walk to Chanctonbury Ring hill fort and return via Washington village with some steep gradients. Meet: Frankland Arms pub RH20 4AL (map ref TQ122130). By Car: A27 towards Worthing, left on A280 towards Findon, left on A24 to A283, right at roundabout and first right into Washington village. Park roadside.

Fri 15th June - 10:30 am PAGHAM TO SIDLESHAM

L: Jane M: Time: 2 hours Distance: 4½ miles. This is a circular walk taking in parts of Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve and the village of Sidlesham, returning through the fields. A flat walk but includes several stiles and can be slippery. Meet: At the harbour end of Church Lane - where the road ends. (Nearest postcode PO21 4NR) By Car: B2145 from Chichester bypass, left on to the B2166 Pagham Road. At the bottom of Pagham Road go round the bend by Church Farm into Church Lane, where you should find sufficient parking in the lane - either near the church or towards the end of the lane. (Don't use the church car park). By Bus: 600

Sat 16thJune – 9.30am 9.30am START SUSSEX DAY WALK

L: Gerald M: Pete Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 6 miles fairly flat with good surfaces. A lovely summer's walk from Tillington along part of the new Midhurst Way to Easebourne. Not suitable for beginners and please bring bus pass or money for return trip. Buses return to Tillington every hour. Meet: Horse Guards Inn, Upperton Rd, Tillington GU28 9AF SU963 220 (a mile from Petworth) Dogs welcome. Contact Gerald on 07748 597 568 By Bus: Bus No 1 from Midhurst. N.B Optional soup & sandwich lunch at The White Horse for £7.50.

Sun 17thJune – 10.30am ALL DAY BURPHAM

L: Dominic M: Time: 10.30am Distance: Approx. 7 miles. Hilly walk with some stiles. Lovely views. Meet: The public car park behind the George at Burpham BN18 9RR. By Car: Travelling east out of Arundel, take the first turning left after the railway bridge and follow the signs to Burpham village. The car park is accessed behind the pub. Bring plenty of water and lunch.

Mon 18thJune – 10.30am ROWLANDS CASTLE

L: Anne A M:Ann Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 4 Miles. Hilly, some stiles. Not suitable for beginners. Meet: Recreation Ground off Links Lane By Car: Take the A27 west from Chichester towards Havant and take the exit towards Langstone. At the roundabout take the third exit onto Park Road S/B2149, go through two roundabouts. At the next roundabout take the second exit onto Redhill Road. Turn left towards Links Lane and turn left at Links Lane. Turn right to Recreation Ground opposite Village Hall. PO9 6AQ

By Car: From Chichester city centre go south along Basin Road to Canal Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city. By Bus: 5 minute walk from Chichester Bus Station.

Tue 19th June – 10.30am SINGLETON, LEVIN DOWN AND CHARLTON

L: Simon M: Pete Time/Distance: A 4 mile walk starting from outside the primary school at Singleton. Passing through Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Levin Down Nature Reserve on to Charlton, and then returning to Singleton. Two moderate climbs near the beginning of the walk. Meet: Outside the primary school in Singleton. By Car: Just off the A286. Parking in and around the village. Parking is also available at the Weald and Downland Museum if you use the Museum’s café. By Bus: 60

Wed 20th June - 10:30 am COCKING

L: Peter & Alison M: Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 miles. A circular walk starting on the South Downs Way and coming back

down into Cocking with an opportunity to visit the History Column and 11thcentury church. Some steep

gradients. Meet: Cocking Hill car park (nearest postcode GU29 0HT) By Car: On the A286 Chichester – Midhurst road By Bus: No 60 from Chichester every 30 mins

Thurs 21st June - 10:30 am NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS QUEEN ELIZABETH OAK

L: Peter Br M: Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 mile circular walk past Cowdray ruins and Polo grounds to the 1000 year old Queen Elizabeth I oak (one of 50 Great British trees). Not suitable for beginners. Meet: Main car park just north of the centre of Midhurst, behind the bus station (small charge of 30p for 3 hrs).Map ref SU887218 GU29 9DW By Car: Take the A286 to Midhurst, through town centre to mini roundabout at bus station. Turn right into car park. By Bus: 60 to Midhurst Train Station

Fri 22nd June - 10:30 am CHALTON

L: Jane M: Pete Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 5 miles. Open countryside and country lanes from the old village of Chalton. Some hills and stiles. NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS Meet: Chalton Village Car Park which is just before the pub if travelling from Finchdean. By Car: You can either travel via the A3, coming off at the Clanfield/Chalton junction or from Rowlands Castle, follow the road to Finchdean and turn left to Chalton. Post code for Red Lion at Chalton is PO8 0BG.

Mon 25th June - 10:30 am HAYLING BILLY

L: Anne M: Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 miles along the track to the Theatre and back. Ideal for beginners. Meet: Meet behind the Esso garage. PO11 0LG By Car: ½ mile after Hayling Bridge, Esso garage is before the pelican lights, opposite Victoria Road.

Mon 25th June - 10:30 am NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS CHICHESTER HARBOUR

L: Jane M: Time: 5 hours Distance: 9 ½ miles

This a flat but long walk around Chichester Harbour, with lovely views, taking in Dell Quay, Fishbourne, Bosham and Itchenor. It involves a short ferry journey which currently costs £2.50. Bring refreshments although there are pubs and cafes on route. It could be muddy and slippery. Not suitable for beginners, No dogs Meet: Chichester Marina car park ( Free)

By Car: A286 south from Chichester. Turn right at the sign for the Marina. Park in the public car park on the right. By Bus: 52/53 get off at Marina bus stop and walk to the pubic car park

Tues 26th June - 10:30 am EASY WALK CANAL WALK

L: Janet M: Ann Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3½ miles level. Return by bus. Bring bus pass or money for fare. Can be muddy in places when wet. Meet: Chichester Canal, Basin Road, Chichester PO19 8DT. By Car: From Chichester city centre go south along Basin Road to Canal Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city centre. By Bus: 5 minute walk from Chichester Bus Station.

Wed 27th June - 10:30 am ELSTED

L: Bruce M: Pete Time: 2 hours 15 minutes. Distance: 4.5 miles. Ascent 200m (or 240m). Moderately strenuous with one steep climb to Pen Hill for glorious views. (Optional extra climb to Beacon Hill). Also visits the lost churches of Treyford. Three stiles. Meet: Elsted Church. SU816196 ( Nearby postcode GU29 0JY ) http://maps.google.com/maps?t=m&z=15&q=50.9704,-0.8388 By Car: From Midhurst, at the mini-roundabout, take the A272 exit towards Petersfield. After 2 miles turn left into Elsted Rd. Elsted is a further 3 miles. Or take Tipper Lane from South Harting.

Wed 27th June – 7pm EVENING WALK 7PM BLACK RABBIT

L: Dominic M: Ann Time: Approx. 1 hour Distance: 2.4 miles, flat riverside walk, 1 stile. Mill Road car park to Offham, return via Black Rabbit. Meet: Mill Road car park by the river in town centre (charge) BN18 9AA 6:00pm. By Car: A27 to Arundel town centre. At bottom of hill turn left before river, car park on right.

Thurs 28th June - 10:30 am IPING, WOOLBEDING AND STEDHAM

L: Jane M: Peter & Alison Time: 2 hours 30 minutes – 3 hours Distance: 6.75 miles. A longer walk with stiles, taking in Iping and Stedham Commons and the River Rother. Meet: Iping Common Car Park SU852220. GU29 0PB By Car: A286 to Midhurst, at mini roundabout in the town, turn left onto A272 towards Petersfield. After 2 miles turn left into Elsted Road (signposted Elsted/Harting) and the car park is on the right hand side. By Bus: 92 from Midhurst Bus Station to Elsted Road.

Fri 29th June - 10:30 am DURFORD WOOD

L: Fiona M: Pete Time: Approx. 2 hours Distance: 4 miles. This scenic woodland walk takes in a part of the Serpentine trail and the Sussex Border path. It has some steeper sections and is undulating but nothing too difficult. Meet: The car park is near Hill Brow before the Jolly Drovers Pub. By Car: Head to Rogate along the A272, turn right up the hill at the village pub, follow the road up, round the bend and up, then take the first left. Continue along the road for approx. 2 miles (I’ve not measured it) and the car park is on the left with a small layby on the other side of the road. Phone Fiona on 07767 400 039 if any problems.

Sun 1st July - 10:30 am ALL DAY WALK COBNOR PENINSULA

L: Dominic M: Time: All day Distance: 6 miles. Flat harbourside walk on both footpaths and beach. Packed lunch required. Meet: Thornham Marina car park at end of Thornham Lane. Nearest postcode PO10 8DD. By Car: A259 towards Emsworth, turn off for Thorney Island Army Camp. Thornham Lane is ½ mile down on the left. Thornham Marina is at the end. By Bus: 900 Bring plenty of water and lunch

Mon 2nd July - 10:30 am PETWORTH VIA SHIMMINGS VALLEY

L: Gerald M: Pete Time: 1 hour 30 minutes. Distance: 3 miles. See "Little Switzerland", as the locals call the beautiful Shimmings Valley (east side of Petworth ). A little hilly to climb to Brinkshole Heath (see the best sign in Sussex), and return via Byworth, crossing the Haslingbourne stream . Meet: Petworth Library, Rosemary Lane, High St, Petworth GU28 0AU. By Car: Park in main Petworth town centre car park (ample room) & 3 minute walk east from toilets up passageway to Rosemary Lane. Mon 2nd July - 10:30 am SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS CHICHESTER CANAL

By Car: From Chichester city centre go south along Basin Road to Canal Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city. By Bus: 5 minute walk from Chichester Bus Station.

Thurs 5th July - 10:30 am PULBOROUGH BROOKS

L: Jane M: Pete Time: 1 hour Distance: 3.5 miles This is a flat walk with stiles, which can be wet and muddy if there has been bad weather. Please note that in one place there is a very narrow field entrance. Meet: RSPB Reserve Car Park, Wigginholt, Pulborough, RH20 2EL. Meet at entrance to the reserve. By Car: A29 to Pulborough. Turn right on to A283 and after approximately 1.5 miles, turn right into the Reserve Car Park.

Fri 6th July - 10:30 am COMPTON TO TELEGRAPH HILL

L: Peter & Alison M: Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3 miles. Climbing up through woodland to the top of Telegraph Hill with lovely views of the south coast and across to Uppark. No stiles. Meet: Compton Recreation Ground car park. By Car: Take the B2178 from Chichester, turning right at Funtington into Hares Lane and right again on to the B2146. Continue on the B2146 through West Marden and the recreation ground is on your right as you enter Compton village.

Mon 9th July - 10:30 am *NEW WALK* BOXGROVE TO HALNAKER WINDMILL

L: Anne M: Time: Approx.. 2 hours Distance: Approx. 3.5 miles. Through the fields then up Mill Lane to the Windmill. A fairly gentle stroll up the hill. There are some stiles. Meet: Car park by the Village Hall in Boxgrove By Car: Take the Boxgrove Road off the A27 and park opposite the Priory in the car park.

Tues 10th July - 10:30 am CHICHESTER MARINA TO DELL QUAY

L: Janet M: Time: 1 hour 40 minutes Distance: 3½ miles Meet: Park at Chichester Marina car park (free) PO20 7EJ. By Car: A286 south from Chichester towards Birdham. Turn right at sign to Chichester Marina. Park in the public car park on the right (can be muddy). By Bus: 52/53 (circuit from Chichester) get off at the Marina bus stop, then walk down to the public car park.

Thurs 12th July - 10:30 am PETWORTH PARK, UPPERTON AND TILLINGTON

L: Simon M: Time/Distance: A 4 mile circular walk passing through Petworth Park to Upperton and Tillington before returning to Petworth Park. One or two short climbs. No stiles. Meet: Sylvia Beaufoy Car Park. There is some limited parking in this car park which is located off the A272 Tllington Road. By Car: If driving from Midhurst it is on your right hand side shortly before the A272 A285 roundabout. More parking is available nearby in the pay and display car park in Petworth.

Fri 13th July - 10:30 am WATERGATE PARK

L: Jane M: Pete Time: 2 hours 15 minutes Distance: Approx. 5 mile walk through woods and fields. There are 3 steep-ish climbs and the walk does include stiles. This walk is extended to The Swan along Scotland Lane Meet: Walberton Village Hall car park, The Street, Walberton, Arundel, BN18 0PQ. By Car: When heading from Chichester to Arundel on the A27 follow signs to Walberton Village.

Note: You may need to pay for more than 2 hours parking. By Car: A259 Chichester to Emsworth. At roundabout, left into town centre, town square is on right hand side. Car park through town on the right.

L: Janet M: Ann Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3 miles A mostly flat walk around the Stansted estate. Can be muddy when wet. Meet: Stansted Garden Centre car park, Rowlands Castle, PO9 6DX By Car: A2178 from Chichester passing through Funtington and Aldsworth. Turn right at sign to Stansted House, then right by Gatehouse into Stansted Park. Turn right at signpost to the Garden Centre and park in the car park at the bottom of the hill/slope.

Meet: Stoughton Down car park - Forestry Commission car park east of Stoughton on the sharp bend (SU815126) nearest postcode PO18 9JQ. By Car: B2178 from Chichester, turning right at Funtington into Hares Lane and right again on to the B2146. Turn right on to Walderton Stoughton Road, continue through the two villages until you reach the Forestry Commission car part on the right.

Turn left towards Links Lane and turn left at Links Lane. Turn right to Recreation Ground opposite Village Hall. PO9 6AQ

Wed 19th Sept - 10:30am NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS WEST MARDEN

L: Peter & Alison M: Time: 3 hours Distance: 6½ miles. Not suitable for beginners. This is a longer walk with some gentle hills. A circular walk from Walderton and goes via Stansted and West Marden. It includes lanes and pleasant walking through woods and fields. There are five stiles. Meet: At the junction of the B2146 and the Walderton Stoughton Road, where parking is available on the grass verge by the River Ems. By Car: Take the B2178 from Chichester turning right at Funtington into Hares Lane and right again onto the B2146.

L: Anne M: Ann Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3 miles, some level field work with quite steep ascent-descent. Meet: At The Dean car park (no parking at The Dean unless you are eating there afterwards). Parking is available along the lane by the pub. By Car: A286 north from Chichester, through Lavant and continue to West Dean. The Dean pub is on the right hand side. Turn down the road next to the pub and follow it to the stream for parking. By Bus: Bus 60 from Chichester (central).

Tues 25th Sept – 10.30am SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS MARINA STROLL

L: Janet M: Time: 30 minutes Distance: ¾ mile. A level walk around the Marina. Meet: At car park near Boathouse Cafe at Marina. By Car: From Chichester take A286 towards Witterings, turning right at sign to Chichester Marina. Follow the road to the end and park near the Boathouse Café, PO20 7BA. By Bus: Nos 52 or 53. Alight at Marina entrance, then walk down the road to the Marina (approx 3/4 mile) to Boathouse Cafe.

Fri 28th Sept – 10.30am CHIDHAM CIRCULAR

L: Alison & Peter M: Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 5 miles. A circular walk with some of the best panoramic views of the harbour. Some beach walking, no stiles. Meet: Cobnor Farm Amenity car park, Chidham Lane, PO18 8TD. By Car: Take the A259 towards Emsworth and turn south into Chidham Lane. The car park is on the left after approx 1 mile (if you reach the sign for Cobnor House you have gone too far).
