SJMC’s Julie Rasmussen Honored with Nursing Award

Julie Rasmussen, RN, was honored Thursday, Oct. 1 by St. John Medical Center with the DAISY Award for her outstanding performance in caring for patients in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

The DAISY Award is a special recognition offered nationally because of an extraordinary act of compassion or a relationship a nurse has created with a patient that truly made a difference.

In Julie’s case, the nomination was supported by numerous testimonials from families touched by her care.

“Julie displays superb wisdom, knowledge and confidence for dealing with patients and families. She shared all she knew I needed to know before I even asked,” said one patient relative. “The true love of her care will remain with me forever. Nothing in this world can express my gratitude.”

“She always answered questions and always made the extra effort to make us feel at ease even when I know we were in her way at times,” said another patient family.

“She has remembered who she has talked to in my large family. She asks often if we have any questions and fully explained the equipment and processes my grandmother was going through,” said a third.

The DAISY Award began in 1999 and is now awarded annually at more than 1,900 health-care facilities in all 50 states and 14 countries.

Julie was completely surprised and moved by the honor. A turnout of colleagues was on hand when Julie was presented her award, the The Healer’s Touch sculpture, by Cheryl O’Malley, SJMC Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care and William A. Young, Jr., SJMC President and CEO.

“This was totally unexpected. I think all the nurses deserve it,” said Julie. “This is a recogni-tion of what we all do every day, not just me.”

It’s a great time of year if you are a sports fan in Cleveland. Let’s get out there and root for our teams.

Since we are on the topic of sports, nearly every school, starting from early elementary all the way up through col-lege, is well into their season of sports as well. We tell our patients to wear some kind of protective device to protect their teeth while playing sports. As is human nature, people generally think that nothing will ever happen to them.

Injuries to the mouth are common in all kinds of sporting activities. Certainly when you are talking about a sport like football or hockey, a mouth guard is really, really essential.

Over the years that I have practiced dentistry, it is so sad to see a young man or woman, who has never had a cavity in their life, all of a sudden come in with two broken front teeth that may now need root canals and crowns and will now require a lifetime worth of dentistry.

Wearing a mouth guard is not just for kids any more. People are living longer and are healthier. Lots of people at my age and older are engaging in all kinds of sports, includ-ing racquetball, tennis, rugby, and everything else that is out there. I have seen people get elbowed in the mouth and

break off teeth playing racquetball or basketball. It’s not just the real rough sports where people should consider wear-ing a mouth guard.

The other kind of mouth guard that is used very often is for people who grind their teeth. Approximately 1/3 of the population grind their teeth in one form or another. If you are one of those with chipped teeth, easily broken fill-ings, caps or crowns that keep coming off, there is a good chance that you are a grinder. Mouth guards are common-ly used in these instances as well.

Your teeth are one of your best investments, so it really pays to protect them whenever you are doing any kind of aggressive activity. We are happy to offer you a free con-sultation to see if you need some kind of mouth guard or if you have any other dental needs. Please feel free to contact us at 440-892-1810. We are here to help you smile.

National Save for Retirement Week is observed from October 18 to 24 this year. Are you doing all you can to prepare for your own retirement? Of course, if you enjoy your career, you may be in no hurry to retire. But you may want to put yourself in a position someday when work is optional – not mandatory. To reach that point, con-sider taking these steps: First, estimate your cost of retirement, taking into account the age at which you plan to retire and the type of lifestyle you envision. Then, throughout your working years, contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retire-ment plan. At the same time, try to fully fund your IRA each year. Also, control your debts as much as possible. Every dollar you don’t have to spend on debt payments could be used to help you save for retirement. These aren’t the only steps that can help you move toward a comfortable retirement – but they can certainly help get you on the right path. The pump helps critically ill heart attack and heart failure patients by assisting the heart’s main pumping chamber drive blood through the body. The pump kept Amanda alive for nine days after her cardiac crisis, giving her heart a chance to rest and recover.

The Crisis It started as a normal day for the Van Schoor fam-

ily last February. Amanda, her husband, Nick, and sons, Caden, 6, and Cameron, 8, had just returned home from Cameron’s basketball game at the Westlake Recreation Center. Nick heard some unusual noises in the kitchen, and found his wife in distress on the floor. He called 911 and followed the dispatcher’s instructions to provide CPR.

“Nick thought I was choking,” says Amanda. “He nev-er thought of doing CPR until the dispatcher told him to do so.” Fortunately, as a lineman for FirstEnergy, Nick had recently undergone CPR training.

Celebration of Life at St. John Medical CenterHeart Pump Keeps Westlake Woman Alivecontinued from page 1

With Cameron flagging down Westlake EMS outside the house, the rescue team responded quickly and deliv-ered Amanda to the SJMC Emergency Room. Caregivers found blood flow to Amanda’s brain and other vital organs was compromised. Within an hour, interventional cardi-ologist Naim Farhat, MD, and his team inserted the Im-pella pump through a vein and into Amanda’s heart. She was life-flighted to University Hospitals, where the Im-pella pumped blood to her vital organs for nine days until Amanda’s heart recovered enough that it could pump on its own.

“The team weaned her off support devices every day, and her organs responded by doing everything they were supposed to do,” says Atul Hulyalkar, M.D., Amanda’s car-diologist.

About the Pump St. John Medical Center is the first hospital on the

West Side to use the Impella pump. It is a pump so small it can be threaded through an artery and placed inside the heart.

“The pump can be in place for hours or days, which gives a seriously damaged heart crucial time to recover be-fore other procedures are performed,” says Dr. Farhat.

The Impella pump is a minimally invasive procedure. The Impella – a rotary pump with a tiny motor – is inserted by way of a standard catheterization.

“Heart attack and heart failure patients with blockages often need increased blood flow quickly, and the Impella pump helps us accomplish this,” says Dr. Farhat. “It gives us the opportunity to treat patients we couldn’t treat before.”

Abiomed, manufacturer of the pump, estimates that more than 100,000 Americans could benefit from the pump each year.

Amanda’s RecoveryDr. Hulyalkar credits a “great team” for Amanda’s suc-

cessful recovery, including her husband, Westlake EMS, the staff in the St. John Medical Center Emergency Depart-ment, and the Impella implantation cardio team in the ICU.

“We have a great team at St. John Medical Center,” says Dr. Hulyalkar. “This case shows how, by working to-gether, we can truly make a difference in our community. ”

Amanda is very grateful to her support team. “I want to thank each and everyone in this room – doctors, nurses, family, my husband Nick, Dr. Hulyalkar, Dr. Farhat, the Impella team,” she said. “I appreciate all of you for saving my life.”

She also expressed gratitude to the Westlake community for providing dinners, school transporta-tion and other support to her family. “Everybody has been great and supportive,” she said.

Cardiologist Naim Farhat, MD, explains the workings of the incred-ible Impella heart pump that kept Amanda Van Schoor alive for 9 days while her heart recovered from cardiac arrest.

What if Someone Hits My Car? Q: If someone hits my car while driving through a red light at an intersection, what does the law say about how long I can wait before I bring a lawsuit? A: In Ohio, there is a four-year statute of limitations for negligence actions. This means you have four years from the date of the injury to sue in court.

Q: What must I prove to show negligence in court? A: To recover on a negligence claim, you must prove that: 1) the defendant owed you a “duty of care”; 2) the defendant “breached” that duty, 3) the breach of the duty was the “proximate cause of your injury”; and 4) damages....

Q: If someone sues me for negligence, how might my attorney defend me? A: There are a number of defenses your attorney may use, including the follow-ing: Comparative Negligence, Assumption of risk and Statute of limitations....

Caution! IRS Scammers Flood Local Phone Lines

Bay and Westlake Police report that a flood of scam IRS and/or Treasury Dept. phone calls have been received by area residents.

Bay Village Police received over 100 calls from Bay Village residents report-ing calls from scammers posing at IRS or Treasury Department officials on Oct. 8.

Westlake Police reported another 20 complaints Friday morning.

Both Westlake and Bay Police re-mind taxpayers to beware of phone calls from individuals claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or U.S. Treasury Department in an effort to defraud them.

The IRS or U.S. Treasury Department will not con-tact people by phone when inquiring about legitimate unpaid taxes. Also, the IRS or U.S. Treasury Department won’t ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. They will also not ask for a credit card number over the phone.

Bay Police have seen a huge rise in residents reporting scammers making unsolicited calls and fraudulently claim-ing to be IRS officials or U.S. Treasury officials. The scam-mers demand that they send them money or payments for back-taxes or current owed taxes via prepaid debit cards, wire transfers or checks.

Westlake Police Capt. Guy Turner says the best way to handle these calls is to “hang up on them.”

The callers who commit this fraud often:Utilize an au-tomated robocall machine, Use common names and fake IRS badge numbers, May know the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security Number, Make caller ID informa-tion appear as if the IRS is calling, Send bogus IRS e-mails to support their scam, Call a second or third time claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles, and the caller ID again supports their claim.

If you get a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS asking for a payment, here’s what to do:

If you owe Federal taxes, or think you might owe taxes, hang up and call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions.

If you don’t owe taxes, fill out the “IRS Impersonation scam” form on TIGTA’s website, www.treasury.gov/tigta or call TIGTA at 800-366-4484.

You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission atwww.FTC.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments in your complaint.

Westlake Police Bust Credit Card Theft Operation

Westlake Police busted a credit card theft operation last week, resulting in the arrests of seven Floridians who were staying at the Sperry Road motel.

Events unfolded on Sept. 30, thanks to alert police work. A patrol officer noted drug paraphernalia left in and around one of their rental cars at the motel,

The car was later stopped after the operator commit-ted a traffic offense, report Police.

Stolen IDs, checkbooks, and credit cards that were tak-en in thefts in Richfield, Bedford Hts., and Medina County were located. Police also confiscated a ‘punch’ tool used to break car windows.

Other IDs, checkbooks, and credit cards belonging to persons from Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and South Dakota were also recovered from the group’s 3 rental vehicles.

All were transported to the Cuyahoga County Jail on Oct. 6 after waiving preliminary hearings on felony charges.

Drunk Driver Leaves Baby at Home Alone

A Fairview Park Police officer on patrol observed a vehicle travelling at 51 mph in a 25 mph zone on Lorain Rd near W. 214 on Oct. 9. He pulled the vehicle over and while speaking to the driver, he observed signs of intoxication. The 40

year old male was given sobriety tests and he failed all of them. He was placed under arrest for OVI. He then stated that his 3 year old son was home alone in the apartment. Officers went to the residence and found a 3 year old male home alone, asleep, in the apartment. The child’s mother was contacted and took custody of the child. The male, who refused the breath test, was placed under a license sus-pension for refusing the test and is to be charged with OVI, Speed and Child endangering.

Ice Cream Tips StolenPolice were called to Menchies at Westgate on a re-

ported theft. An employee related that while in the back room, a male stole approximately $70 in tip money from the jar on the counter. A customer alerted her to the theft when she returned to the counter. Officer’s will be review-ing video surveillance to try and ID the suspect.

Ring Missing After Garage Sale Bathroom Break

A ring went missing after an Elm-wood Road resident in Bay Village al-lowed a visitor to her garage sale in the house to use the bathroom.

On 10/06/2015, at 1402 hrs, the resi-dent reported to police that she had a garage/moving sale several weeks ago. During the sale she allowed a patron to go into her house to use the bathroom. After the sale was over the resident realized that her wedding ring was miss-ing. Police are investigating.

Asleep at the WheelOn 10/10/2015, at 0301 hrs, a BVPD officer located a

vehicle that was parked in the front yard of a house in the 30000 block of Ednil. The officer located a female sleeping behind the wheel. After speaking with the female, the of-ficer suspected the operator of the vehicle had been drink-ing. Field sobriety test were administered, and as a result, the 40 yoa Columbus resident was arrested for OVI. She will face charges at RRMC.

On 10/09/2015, at 0027 hrs, a BVPD officer stopped a vehicle on Lake Rd. near Cahoon for several traffic viola-tions. After speaking with the driver, the officer suspected the driver had been drinking. Field sobriety test were ad-ministered, and as a result the driver was arrested for OVI. The 65 yoa Cleveland resident will face charges at RRMC.

With 510 car accidents involving deer, Lorain County has been identified as High Risk for Deer Crashes by the Ohio Dept. of Transportation. St. Rt. 2 is the hot spot with 15 accidents reported.

ODOT reminds you to use these driving tips to help avoid collisions with deer:

Watch for deer crossing signs and drive with extreme caution, especially in the posted areas.

If you see a deer near the road, expect that others will follow.

Watch for deer near roadways, especially at dawn and after sunset. About 20 percent of these crashes occur in early morning, while over half occur between 5 p.m. and midnight.

After dark, use high-beams when there isn’t oncoming traffic. These will illuminate the deer eyes allowing more time to react.

Always wear safety belts and drive at safe, sensible speeds for road conditions.

If a vehicle strikes a deer, motorists should report the crash by calling local law enforcement, the sheriff ’s depart-ment, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, or the Ohio Depart-ment of Natural Resources – even if there was no damage to the motorist’s vehicle. Motorists can claim the carcass through those agencies.

The top hotspot location in the state is State Route 64 in Lucas County between Reed Rd. and U.S. Route 20 Air-port Highway with 19 crashes in 2014.

A renewal of the Arts & Culture levy, Issue 8, will ap-pear on the November 3rd ballot in Cuyahoga County. If ap-proved, this issue won’t increase taxes or prices. It will simply continue the same level of support for Arts & Culture organi-zations and initiatives for another 10 years.

Approval will ensure continued funding for BAYarts, Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, Youth Challenge, Clague Playhouse, Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, Thursday at Rocky River Seniors, Cleveland Jobs with Justice, Good Company: A Vocal Ensemble, One World Shop, Stage in Riv-er, Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra and Westlake Chinese School.

The issue has already received endorsements from more than 200 elected officials, public bodies, and organizations in-cluding Ohio Senator Tom Patton, Bay Village Mayor Debo-rah Sutherland, Rocky River Mayor Pamela Bobst, Bay Village City Councilmember-at-Large Dwight Clark, Rocky River City Councilmember-at-Large David Furry and BAYarts.

“Without this injection of grants made possible from the tax, our communities would not enjoy the thriving organiza-tions we have that residents in our communities and beyond have come to enjoy. A vibrant arts community reinforces our region by attracting tourists, residents and businesses and is an unequivocal source of pride for all of us.” says Mayor Sutherland.

In 2013 alone, organizations receiving public funds pro-vided 1.4 million experiences for children including 21,411 classes and workshops, 18,881 field trips and 678 internships and apprenticeships. Thousands of adults have benefited from classes and workshops from funds made possible through the levy.

Funds raised by the levy are distributed by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture (CAC), the public agency charged with overseeing the competitive grant process. Since 2007, CAC has awarded more than 1,200 grants to more than 300 organizations in the sum of $125 million to support both artists and organizations of all sizes. Their impact is felt in every corner of Cuyahoga County, including communities in our own backyard. Bay Village, Rocky River and Westlake have received more than $930,000 in general operating and program support

“The benefit that our arts and culture sector creates for our children is immense and irreplaceable,” said Barbara Rob-inson, campaign co-chair and former chair of the Ohio Arts Council. “This is a small tax that has generated huge, wide-ranging benefits for all the residents of Cuyahoga County. With the support of voters on November 3, those benefits will continue for years to come.
