Heritage & culture in the Heart of Devon

250 million years ago scorching desert conditions led to the formation of the burnt red rocks at what is today Orcombe Point in Exmouth, the start of the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

AD 55 - 400 The Romans arrive in Exeter. A large part of the wall they built surrounding the city still stands today – follow the City Wall self-guided heritage trail to find out more.

1050 – 1270 The Bishop’s See (seat) moves from Crediton to Exeter and the Norman Exeter Cathedral is built. AD 909 Devon's first cathedral is established in Crediton, reputed to be on the site of what is now the imposing Holy Cross Church.

11th Century Devon’s largest castle is built in Okehampton, its ruins are now managed by English Heritage for visitors to explore. 8,000 – 700 BC Devon was one of the

first areas of Britain settled after the last ice age. In Dartmoor National Park remains of human habitation date back as far as the Mesolithic period (8,000 – 4,000 BC), and the country’s largest concentration of Bronze Age remains are scattered across the Moor. Standing stones, Bronze and Iron Age hut circles and hillforts are visible in several places.

800 BC – 1st Century AD The remains of Iron Age settlements can be seen today across Devon – visit Blackbury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort near Honiton with impressive earthwork ramparts. Today it is an excellent picnic spot, carpeted with a sea of bluebells in spring.

The Heart of Devon is home to some of the UK’s most important historic towns, villages, monuments and conservation areas. Its rich heritage is evident wherever you go. Here are just some of the important events from the Heart of Devon’s many million years of history...


21st Century The Heart of Devon’s rich heritage is today celebrated through traditional events, such as Ottery St Mary’s flaming tar barrels on 5 November and the unusual Honiton Hot Pennies Day in July. The re-opening of Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum in December 2011 adds to the region’s fantastic cultural offering.

16th Century Beacons were constructed on the Devon coast to warn of invasion by the Spanish Armada. One of these, Grade II listed Culmstock Beacon high on the Blackdown Hills, is one of the very few still standing today.

18th – 19th Century The Heart of Devon’s elegant seaside resorts became popular holiday destinations. The Regency town of Sidmouth attracted many royal visitors including Princess Victoria. Victorian, Regency and Georgian buildings add to the charm and character of Dawlish and Teignmouth.

Smuggling by sea in East Devon reaches its peak during the Napoleonic Wars (1793 – 1815). Beer and Branscombe are particularly notorious for their histories of the smuggling of goods including casks of brandy, tea, tobacco and silk!

14th Century Exeter’s Underground Passages are built, providing the city’s residents with a supply of fresh water carried from springs outside the city wall through lead pipes! Visitor today can take a guided tour of the Passages – a unique and exciting experience!

8 Walk on Dartmoor. Head to Devon’s biggest gym to let off steam! Meet wild Dartmoor ponies and climb the lofty granite tors.

WalkingWhether you fancy a short, leisurely stroll or a long distance hike, you will be spoilt for choice in the Heart of Devon. Long distance trails include the South West Coast Path, the Exe Valley Way and East Devon Way, which wind along footpaths, quiet country lanes and villages, or experience a wonderful diversity of scenery along the Two Moors Way. Follow themed town trails around the Heart of Devon’s historic towns, or join free guided walking tours of Exeter and Topsham.Cycling Cycling is one of the best ways to travel in the Heart of Devon. There are plenty of well signposted trails through towns and countryside, plus adrenalin pumping off-road trails on Dartmoor, Woodbury Common and at Haldon Forest Park. Less experienced cyclists can take a leisurely pedal along one of the flat, traffic free routes alongside the River Exe Estuary and Tiverton Canal. The Southern Devon Way (NCN2) runs from Axminster along the coast to Exmouth, with stops in many Devon towns and villages along the way.

Watersports Canoe or kayak the peaceful waters of the canals at Exeter and Tiverton, head to Exmouth to experience the thrills and spills of kitesurfing and wake boarding, or take a more leisurely boat trip along the Jurassic Coast with Stuart Line Cruises. The more adventurous can take a boat from Exmouth or Teignmouth to dive far below the surface and explore fascinating wrecks.Climbing The granite tors of Dartmoor National Park provide plenty of opportunities for climbers, with breathtaking views from the top! Practice first at Exeter’s Quay Climbing Centre, also home to Europe’s first Clip ‘n’ Climb Centre! Isca Outdoor in Exeter and the Rock Centre in Chudleigh offer tuition in climbing, caving and abseiling. Bird watching The Heart of Devon's landscape of estuary marshland, forest, fields and commons make it a haven for birdlife. The Exe Estuary is an internationally important site for winter migrant birds, including Avocets, Brent Geese and Lapwings. At the mouth of the estuary, Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve is also an area of international importance for wildlife. Public trails, viewing platforms and hides allow visitors to get close to the birds without disturbing them.Fishing The Heart of Devon's many lakes and rivers offer some of the best fishing in the country. The River Exe is the south west’s most prolific river for Salmon, Wild Trout and Grayling, or fish for Rainbow Trout in the Heart of Devon’s stillwater fisheries. The Olympic Torch brings the excitement of the London 2012 Games to Exeter and the Heart of Devon. Lit in Greece, the Olympic Flame arrives in the UK at Lands End on 18 May 2012. It then begins its exciting 70 day journey, heading through many towns and villages along the way, enabling local communities to shine a light on the best their area has to offer – including celebrations of local culture, breathtaking landscapes and dynamic urban areas.The second overnight stay for the Olympic Torch will be in Exeter on Sunday 20 May,

where a major evening celebration will be held in the city centre. The next day’s route takes in the beautiful scenery of north Dartmoor, Mid Devon and Exmoor, before stopping for the evening in Taunton.Visitors to Weymouth in 2012 can find information about visiting the Heart of Devon for or during the Olympic and Paralympic Games at www.heartofdevon.com/olympics Also watch out for news on the events in Exeter, which will be added as soon as they have been confirmed!

The London 2012 Olympic Games will be held in London and across the UK from 27 July to 12 August 2012, followed by the Paralympic Games from 29 August to 9 September 2012.

The Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs is the most renowned area of landslipping in Britain, also designated a National Nature Reserve. Because of its isolation, plant and animal communities have developed virtually untouched by man. Interesting species include the wood white butterfly and the nightingale.Beer Quarry Caves are important for their population of eight species of hibernating bat, some of which are very rare including the Bechstein's bat and the greater and lesser horseshoe bats.Dawlish Warren is a 500 acre National Nature Reserve at the mouth of the Exe Estuary. It is an area of international importance for several species of wildfowl and wading birds. If you're lucky you may see a short-eared owl, a flock of brent geese, or maybe a cirl bunting. A bird hide gives excellent views particularly either side of high tide.On the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths over 70 breeding bird species have been recorded, including nightjar, hobby and in most years Dartford warbler. There are also 21 breeding dragonfly species.The waters, foreshore and low-lying land of the Exe Estuary are of international importance for the largest flock of wintering avocets in Britain. Parts of the site are managed by the Devon Wildlife Trust, including the Old Sludge Beds, which has a path with boardwalks running through the site and linking on to the public right of way along the Exeter Ship Canal.

The Grand Western Canal meanders through 11 miles of pleasant landscape from Tiverton to Lowdswells, with a wealth of wildlife, including swans and kingfishers which can be seen from the level towpath.Seaton Marshes is a freshwater grazing marsh, with scrapes, ditches and ponds that attract considerable wildlife interest. Visit the easily accessible viewing hide to see wildfowl and wading birds in the winter, and dragonflies and butterflies in the summer. Stover Country Park contains over 114 acres of woodland, heathland, grassland, lake and marsh and a substantial variety of wildlife, which can be viewed from a bird hide and aerial walkway. Find out more at the Nature Interpretation Centre.Situated on the edge of the East Devon AONB, Fire Beacon Hill is an area of lowland heath, which offers a birds eye view of the surrounding countryside. Yellowhammers breed on the Local Nature Reserve, as does the nationally scarce dartford warbler. The site is criss-crossed with bridleways, footpaths, fire-breaks and the East Devon Way, so exploring on foot is easy.

Wildlife in the Heart of Devon The Heart of Devon has a huge variety of flora and fauna to discover, with two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOBs), and a large number of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and Local Nature Reserves providing habitats for many rare and important species. Held annually on the 5 November, this spectacular event is said to date back to the 17th century. Barrels are soaked with tar, lit, then hoisted onto local people’s shoulders to carry through the streets of Ottery St Mary!5 Go to the beach! Autumn and winter are the perfect times to visit the Heart of Devon’s beaches – experience beautiful scenery away from the summer crowds! Walk the South West Coast Path for dramatic scenes of crashing waves and sea spray against the spectacular cliffs of the Jurassic Coast. Dogs are allowed on most of the beaches from October to April.

Beer Beer is a picturesque fishing village with a fascinating past that includes smuggling, quarrying and lace making.
