Producing more teachers annually than the

entire UC System combined, CSUN’s Michael

D. Eisner College of Education is a powerful

elevating force for the region. Its graduates

dominate the ranks of the Los Angeles Unified

School District Rookies of the Year and Teachers

of the Year winners. In recent years CSUN Eisner

grads have been honored as the Most Inspiring

Coach in the Nation and with the Presidential

Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. Rebecca

Mieliwocki, the 62nd National Teacher of the Year is

just one example. A seventh-grade English teacher,

Mieliwocki was honored at the White House. Her

enthusiasm that every day is an opportunity to

inspire and change lives is raising the standard

for education in the United States. CSUN prepares

teachers like Mieliwocki to lift the sons and

daughters of Los Angeles and the nation.

Tarzana Community & CulturalCenter

Surrounded by towering,long-needled pines, the pic-turesque Ventura Boulevard-Vanalden Avenue propertythat is now the TarzanaCommunity & CulturalCenter (TCCC) almost neverhappened. Only the vision, dedication, financial contri-butions and continuing perse-verance of a few local resi-dents saved it from becoming one more built-up commercial establishment.

As many know, Tarzana is the birthplace of Tarzan – Lord of the Apes.Celebrated American novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs created the world-famous jungle hero right here on his own spacious Tarzana Ranch, in theSan Fernando Valley where he spent most of his life riding, writing, and liv-ing life to the fullest. The author would have seen and recognized the mod-est 1940s Spanish-style home located just a few blocks west of his ownlarge, hilltop hacienda.

Tarzan Museum: Displays at TCCC are ever growing and feature anarray of community histories, well as many documents, books and photosrelated to the town’s famous namesake; Edgar Rice Burroughs: “TarzanLord of the Apes”.

Children’s Garden: The Children’s Garden evokes whimsical ele-ments of the African landscape, which are altogether appropriate for Tarzancountry. The botanical garden includes “Elephant Island” and GiraffeRidge, as well as an herb garden and a “kitchen garden”, which is replen-ished each spring by a Brownie troop.

TCCC is located at 19130 Ventura Blvd, Tarzana.Tele: (818) 705-1286 Web: www.mytarzana.org
