Welcome Everyone! It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Deadwood for this spring conference of SDMGMA. Deadwood has

so much history of the Wild West with gold mining being the biggest draw to the area, and now the opportunity to play those games of chance that are also a part of the history of the area. Of course now, the games of chance are more varied and empty wallets are more common than bullets flying to end the game. Do you feel like you might as well toss a coin or spin a roulette wheel to determine your next actions in order to deal with the unknown effects of all of the changes in our healthcare environment?

Our Education Committee has pondered the unknowns and has come up with a great lineup of speakers and topics that should provide us with knowledge that can help us stay away from the unlucky spin of the wheel. Topics range from income related items – emerging payment models and being able to continue to bill with ICD-10 on the horizon – to potential fine areas linked to security audits or HIPAA violations. I am very excited to participate in the sessions with Mary Kelly as she walks us through managing change and also leadership strategies.

But the best part of this conference is the chance to visit with friends and colleagues from around the state and exchange ideas and solutions to our daily issues. Please take time to visit with our exhibitors and conference sponsors. Many of them have been long time supporters of your individual practices and of our educational conference. Without their generosity and support, these meetings simply would not be possible.

Your board has been busy reviewing the bylaws over the past several months and will present needed changes at our business meeting Friday morning. You will have received advance notice of the proposed changes so please attend the meeting and let us know if you agree.

There are several opportunities to volunteer on committees if you would like to get to know more of our members or if would like to help shape the future of our organization. Please talk to any of the board members if you would like more information. We’re also interested in knowing your thoughts on how to make the conferences more enjoyable and rewarding for you.

So enjoy the learning, reconnecting with friends and making new ones, and hopefully you will all have lucky spins on that roulette wheel (or slot machines)!

Thursday, 8:15 am – 9:30 am: Affordable Care Act – Essential Strategies and Emerging Payment Models

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is moving into full swing with the market drastically changing for hospitals and healthcare professionals. This session will discuss key developments in health care reform that will shape both how care is delivered and reimbursed as we move forward. Adele Allison will explore the cornerstones of this law and the industry trends it has created including performance measuring through clinical reporting, value-based purchasing through models such as the accountable care organization, and patient engagement requirements. Providers and executives who can navigate the restructuring underway will be in the strongest position to impact quality of care for patients in their communities. Join this session to gain insights into how technology and novel payment models are transforming the paradigm of care delivery. This session will provide healthcare professionals with just in time information of ACA implications to help in forward-thinking strategic planning.

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:• Analyze key components of Affordable Care Act impacting care

delivery in 2015.• Compare market approaches being adopted for measured

performance improvement.• Integrate health care reform requirements with competing clinic

priorities and prepare for value-based purchasing. Thursday, 1:00 pm – 2:15 pm: Rolling Up Your Sleeves on ICD-10

The transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 is set to take place on October 1, 2015. All areas of the healthcare delivery system will be impacted by this changeover and the enormity of the many considerations associated with the conversion process is daunting. Are you ready? Join Adele Allison as she speaks about the tasks at hand and the interdependency of disparate systems such as claims, interfaces and other technologies. Adele will review the core components of ICD-10 and how it differs from the current ICD-9 system, as well as the impact to the healthcare infrastructure and cultural shift required. Designed for those seeking to be fully prepared, Adele will shed light on the benefits and challenges associated with adoption of ICD-10 nationwide and the steps you need to be taking now to position for success later.

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:• Identify the core components of ICD-10 and how they differ from ICD-9.• Integrate clinical documentation improvement processes into a

physician organization.• Assemble action items needing rapid attention for implementation and

planning.

Should you move your PHI to the cloud? What is the risk of cloud computing? Can a HIPAA security program be both comprehensive and affordable?... Do HIPAA’s demanding regulations make you want to throw your mobile devices into the trash? This presentation introduces strategies you need to be compliant with regulation and demonstrates how to create IT architecture that will stay relevant to your practice over time. Learn what data and devices should be encrypted and why, and compliance management and securing communications skills.

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:• Learn how to manage IT without a technical background.• What solutions are a “must-have.”• Discover methods to adopt new technology into a compliance
