In Nashville and nationwide, Gould Turner Group, P.C. is known for its architects’ no-nonsense approach—

their ability to strike a balance between creativity and practicality—in designing a variety of structures.

Local projects include Palmer Plaza, One Belle Meade Place, The Bank of Nashville, and Croft Middle School.

Gould Turner Group, P.C.

Founded in 1980, Gould Turner Group,

P.C. (GTG) is a Nashville-based,

full-service architectural, planning, and

interior design firm. Since its founding,

this firm has acquired a national reputa-

tion for excellence in health care design

and enjoys local recognition for a

multitude of building types, including

educational, public, and commercial

facilities. Committed to designing

buildings that are attractive and opera-

tionally efficient, GTG’s architects work

in collaboration with clients across the

country and deliver to all their projects

a variety of specialized talents and a

depth of knowledge and experience.

Linda S. Marzialo, AIA, ACHA, a principal

and the president of GTG, brings more

than 30 years of experience to the

company. Marzialo describes the firm’s

underlying philosophy: “Our role is to

assist our clients in achieving their vision.

We carefully listen to our clients in order

to understand the challenges and oppor-

tunities they face, and work with them

in partnership to provide unique solu-

tions.” Marzialo, who holds an American

College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA)

board certification, states that for health

care design, this means helping GTG’s

clients to create facilities that provide

a comforting, calming, healing environ-

ment for patients and families as well

as a supportive workplace for staff.

Perfecting Evidence-Based Health Care DesignA successful example of GTG’s medical

facility design approach may be found

in its design for the Northwest Medical

Center of Oro Valley in Oro Valley,

Arizona. This project was featured in

the “Architectural Showcase” issue

of Healthcare Design magazine in

September 2005 and is an honorable

mention winner of the 2006 prestigious

ASHE (American Society for Healthcare

Engineering) Vista Partnering award.

This project embraces the evidence-

based design ideology, which maintains

that thoughtful design can produce

positive measurable results to a facility’s

bottom line. Working closely with hospital

staff, GTG incorporated such details as

decentralized nursing stations to bring

Gould Turner Group, P.C.

(GTG) specializes in health

care architecture that

is both functional and

aesthetically compelling and

has created beautiful, state-

of-the-art facilities nationwide.

nurses closer to patients, wireless com-

munication devices to lessen noise

distractions, and views of nature and

abundant day lighting to enhance

patients’ hospital experience. The result

is a striking facility that boosts caregiver

productivity, is operationally efficient, and

champions patient healing and wellness.

Advancing EducationGTG brings to its educational clients

innovative translations of their

educational programs into architectural

solutions that offer not only efficient

and cost-effective school buildings

but also facilities that are exciting

and highly conducive to the learning

process. Ted Stanton, a senior architect

with GTG, notes, “We want our school

buildings to play a key role in advancing

the school’s educational programs.”

Croft Middle School in Nashville,

Tennessee, exemplifies this concept.

Sited adjacent to the Nashville Zoo

at Grassmere, the school takes advan-

tage of its exceptional location to

highlight programs in natural history,

biology, zoology, and conservation

by featuring centers for “up close”

animal encounters and exhibits under

the supervision of zoo personnel.

Demonstration centers in the facility

are also available for use by other

schools and by community groups.

Leading in SustainabilityGTG architects remain at the forefront

of environmentally responsible and

sustainable design. Members of the

firm are LEED (Leadership in Energy

and Environmental Design) accredited

and are active in the U.S. Green

Building Council. GTG’s design for

McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center,

a new health care facility in Eugene,

Oregon, is one of a limited number of

new hospital designs in the nation to

pursue LEED certification.

Ed Wansing, Director of Sustainability

for GTG, explains the benefits of

environmentally responsible design:

“By focusing on water and energy

efficiency, owners can expect to see

long-lasting operational cost savings.

Through the use of materials that

contribute to good indoor air quality,

we are able to create healthier interior

environments for the building’s

occupants; and due to reduced environ-

mental impact and increased open

space, the entire community benefits

when thoughtful consideration is given to

the positioning of a building on its site.”

Succeeding through CommitmentThroughout the design process,

GTG principals and project architects

maintain a hands-on design and delivery

approach and remain active during each

phase of the project. GTG architects

and interior designers use their experi-

ence and knowledge to blend creativity

with practicality. GTG manages every

opportunity with the attitude of provid-

ing value and service to its clients.

By developing long-term relationships

with clients, Gould Turner Group, P.C.

enjoys a high level of repeat business

from a long list of satisfied customers.

Gould Turner Group, P.C. (GTG) is a Nashville-based full service architectural, planning, and interior design firm. Since its founding in 1980, GTG has acquired a national reputation for its strength in healthcare design as well as recognition for the design of educational, public, and commercial building types. Committed to the design of buildings that are attractive and operationally efficient, GTG's architects and designers work in collaboration with clients across the country on projects that range from additions and renovations to campus master plans and new construction. GTG principals and project architects recognize the importance of quality client service and maintain a hands-on design and delivery approach. We realize that the cost of erecting facilities is far less significant that the cost of operating them in terms of personnel, maintenance and energy costs. Today, as when our company began, our design commitment remains the same: to create environments that are functional, yet aesthetically compelling – economically constructed, yet durable and easily maintained. GTG is a woman owned, certified WBE firm.

Gould Turner Group (GTG) was founded in 1980 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado by Mike Gould and Steve Turner. Mike and Steve envisioned an architectural firm founded on teamwork, exceptional client service, and innovative, quality design. The firm began by designing commercial projects in Colorado, and soon thereafter, entered the field of medical design. Within a year of its founding, GTG found itself relocating to Nashville where it had acquired as a client the largest for-profit hospital system in the country. GTG grew in size and in project experience, adding additional healthcare clients, as well as hospitality, educational, and institutional building types to its resume. In 1989, Mike Gould left GTG for health reasons and the firm transitioned to Steve Turner and Linda Marzialo to continue GTG’s legacy. GTG deepened its commitment to the fields of medical and educational design. In 2005, upon Steve Turner’s retirement, Linda Marzialo took over leadership of the firm and today GTG is Nashville’s largest woman owned architectural firm. The firm continues to specialize in healthcare and educational project types, and GTG’s core values remain the same as when our company began. We believe in providing value, we believe in quality client service, we believe in collaboration and teamwork, and we believe in good design. GTG has an extraordinary retention rate of both its employees and clients – a testimony of commitment to our core values.

Oak Hill Hospital Brooksville, Florida

This major addition to the existing Oak Hill Hospital added 36 new universal care patient beds, enlarged the surgical department to 10 operating rooms with shell space for two more, and added a new 18 bay PACU. A new covered outpatient entrance was developed to provide convenient access to registration and to the new 22 position pre-operative suite for patients requiring drop off assistance. Other areas of renovation and expansion included the central sterile suite, infusion suite, admitting and pre-admission testing departments. The new addition is structured for three additional floors to accommodate future bed expansion. Careful phasing of construction was required to assure that the hospital remained fully operational while under construction. The new addition was designed with state of the art technology, including digital systems, computerized drug dispensing, electronic medical records, and wi-fi throughout. Interior design took into consideration appealing and welcoming aesthetics, patient visual and acoustical privacy, and clear way finding. 112,155 SF $29,000,000 Construction Cost Opened 2013

St. David’s South Austin Medical Center Bed Expansion and Facility Addition & Renovation Austin, TX

This project entailed the new construction of three nursing floors on top of the existing four story hospital to accommodate medical/surgical and universal care beds. It also included the renovation and expansion of such vital hospital departments as surgery, PACU, nursery, continuing care nursery, food service, nuclear medicine, and education. The project was intrusive to many areas of the hospital, as renovations took place on all floors and new construction occurred adjacent to and over critical areas of the hospital. Significant phasing was required to maintain hospital operations without disruption. Existing stairs and elevators were extended vertically to serve the new floors and the building infrastructure was upgraded to comply with high rise codes. A major design challenge was to tie the new and existing areas of the facility into one cohesive look. Rather than abandon the building’s existing design concept, GTG chose to build upon it by incorporating a few existing design elements, such as wood accent panels, listello tiles, crown molding, and specialty lighting, to create a signature look for the facility. The result is a transitional design that blends new with old, has a welcoming appeal, and reflects Austin’s eclectic culture. 75,317 SF New / 35,407 SF Renovation $34,154,000 Construction Cost Opened 2012

This major expansion and renovation project, for the teaching facility affiliated with the University of Kansas School of Medicine, was completed nine months ahead of schedule. The project is the implementation of the second phase of a master plan developed by the Gould Turner Group for the facility. The four-story, 185,000 square foot facility houses intensive care units for surgery, cardiac, and medical patients. Individual waiting rooms and private consultation areas are located on each floor, with window walls overlooking the interior courtyard. Seventy-eight private patient rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Outpatient services for radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and wound care are located on the first floor, easily accessible from the new adjacent parking area. New equipment includes a larger hyperbaric oxygen chamber in the wound care unit. This project centralized Imaging services, including diagnostic radiology, ultrasound, CT scan, nuclear medicine, and angiography, on the first floor for patient convenience. The entrance from the interior courtyard features ornamental stone salvaged from Huston Hall, former home of the Wesley School of Nursing which was located on the site of the new critical care building. School alumni raised over $42,000 for a brick courtyard walkway memorializing graduates of the three-year program from the School's inception in 1915 until its closure in 1982.

Summit Medical Center Outpatient Center and Urgent Care Facility Lebanon, Tennessee Summit Medical Center Outpatient Diagnostic Center and Urgent Care Facility is part of the TriStar Health System and provides full-service emergency care to the residents of east metropolitan Nashville / Davidson County and Wilson County areas. The objective of this project was the development of a facility that would bring quick and convenient emergency care services to the area’s outlying community, and would relieve capacity increases at the main medical campus, due to the population growth of the area. Strategically located at the convergence of Interstate 40 at Central Pike & Old Hickory Boulevard, this project was designed within an existing multi-story medical office building, and encompasses a ground floor emergency care center and an imaging center. The Urgent Care Center includes six examination/treatment rooms, a screening/interview room, and a radiography room. A separate women’s diagnostic center and imaging center are located adjacent to the emergency treatment suite. The women’s diagnostic center includes rooms for ultrasound, mammography and bone densitometry. The imaging center houses a CT scan, shell space for a future MRI, a nuclear medicine room, a stress test room, and an R/F room. The facility design allows for the separation of emergency care from the diagnostic center while maintaining the adjacencies and ease of patient flow to the required areas for treatment. The interior design presents a calm and professional appearance through the use of wood finishes and soothing colors. Materials and fabrics were also selected for their durability and appropriateness of use. 16,201 SF renovation $3,200,000 construction cost Opened September 2007

The addition and renovation project at West Houston Medical Center adds a new main entrance and two story lobby, expands cardiac services, and adds patient beds. A new three story patient tower, expandable to six floors, is designed to house a cardiac cath suite of four procedure rooms, twenty two critical care beds, and six progressive care beds. The top floor of the tower is designed as shell space for future conversion to patient beds. All floors of this new tower are designed to connect to the adjacent medical office building. This project also includes the addition of a new second floor over existing occupied space housing the hospital’s emergency and imaging departments. This new second floor is designed to accommodate the hospital’s obstetrics program of 18 post-partum beds, 6 LDR rooms, 24 well baby bassinettes, and 8 continuing care bassinettes. A portion of the new addition is also designed to house central sterile processing and a new cardiovascular operating room. Renovations to the adjacent surgery department improve waiting areas, create a new neurological operating room, and expand the hospital’s pre-op and PACU suites. Renovations for a new endoscopy suite and the conversion of the existing endoscopy suite to patient rooms complete the project. The additions and renovations for this project are adjacent to, and above, sensitive functioning areas of the hospital, and required that the project be designed to accommodate multiple phases of construction in order to minimize disruptions to ongoing operations. 95,500 SF New / 40,000 SF Renovation $47,116,820 Construction Cost Opened 2012

Swedish Medical Center Englewood, Colorado This project involved the development of a new main entry and lobby for the hospital, new and renovated patient floors, and renovation to expand and upgrade the NICU with private patient rooms. New construction of a patient tower on the sixth and seventh floors, over existing mechanical and surgical spaces, was designed to house forty private inpatient beds. This new addition was structured to expand vertically two more floors in the future. Connections were made back to the existing nursing units at each floor. This project also renovated four floors of the hospital’s existing high rise ten-story patient tower. Design challenges included completely “gutting” and building back the twenty-bed nursing units in place, while keeping the units operational. The project also involved bringing the existing patient tower into compliance with high rise codes, and updating the existing fire command center. Renovation of the existing NICU to improve and expand it required careful planning to maintain the unit’s sensitive operations without disruption. The age of the existing tower and the condition of the existing mechanical and electrical systems made this portion of the renovation extremely challenging and required thoughtful consideration of systems and phasing by all team members during design and construction. 65,500 SF New / 128,000 SF Renovation $47,000,000 Construction Cost Opened 2011

Wesley Medical Center Bed Tower, Surgery, and NICU Addition and Renovation Wichita, Kansas

This expansion and renovation project for the teaching facility affiliated with the University of Kansas School of Medicine, was completed ahead of schedule and within budget. The project is the implementation of a third phase of a master plan developed by the Gould Turner Group for the facility. The surgery department was renovated and expanded above the existing emergency department to add six new state of the art operating rooms sized for major procedures in the areas of orthopedic and neurology. Other OR renovations included cystoscopy, OB/GYN, eye surgery and a hybrid operating room, used for cardiac imaging, diagnostic catheterization and surgical procedures. The tenth floor of the existing tower was renovated allowing 32 private patient rooms to be brought back on line for medical and surgical patient care. The existing level two neo-natal intensive care unit was renovated to double the unit’s original size, and to provide a mixture of private, semi-private, and triple capacity universal neo-natal intensive care rooms. This design will allow the facility to use these rooms as any level of care for neo-natal patients. The design encourages more family centered care, as many of the patients in this unit are brought from other areas of the state and surrounding communities. Families are allowed to stay in the room with the infant throughout their stay, and remain active in the care of the patient on a day to day basis. Nurse work stations are positioned between groups of two to three rooms providing them with quick access and visibility of the infants, without intruding on the family.

Nearly all the designs we have created over the years are for healthcare facilities. That focused expertise, coupled with our low staff turnover rate, and an average length of service of 15 years, gives our staff the ability to reach a unique depth of knowledge in designing facilities, including new construction and complex renovation and addition projects. While our team members are markedly proficient in handling the subtle and complex challenges of healthcare design, the client also does not have to be concerned about problems resulting from an unstable workforce or establishing new relationships during the life cycle of the project. This combination of expertise, dependability, and close collaboration with the principals awards us with long-term client relationships.

Differentiators and Experience GTG differentiates itself from its competitors in these ways:

GTG principals are actively involved in projects throughout the process.

Healthcare design is what we do. Healthcare design has consistently represented approximately 95% of GTG’s business. The firm has experience with a wide range of health care projects of varying types, sizes, and locations.

GTG has healthcare design experience with both not-for- profit and for-profit clients, as well as with JVs between the two. We have benefited from the blend of these experiences in our ability to understand the importance of community, staff, and physician involvement, and how to engage this involvement. We also understand the importance of holding a schedule and a budget and how vital this is to honoring hospital and physician commitments, as well as to realizing a return on investment. Lastly, these experiences have taught us how to incorporate organizational and operational efficiencies into our designs without sacrificing those details that contribute to quality patient care and comfortable environments for patients, families, and caregivers.

The majority of our work comes from repeat clients. We

have renovated and added on to our own projects enough times to understand the importance of designing for future expansion and flexibility.

We are a woman owned firm.

GTG Design Philosophy Today's hospitals are confronted with issues of aging workforces, fewer professionals entering the workplace, and difficulties hiring and retaining staff. Caregivers treat more acutely ill patients, many of whom have the greater expectations of the baby boomer generation, and, in many instances, care is being provided in old, outdated and poorly illuminated facilities with too little space and aged infrastructures unable to accommodate emerging technologies. At GTG, we understand hospital operations, function, and flow and we recognize the importance of technology, flexibility, expandability, and adaptability in our hospital designs. We design to promote operational efficiency and staff convenience as well as to provide for patient safety and comfort. We understand that the elements of a caring environment and a physical structure are pre-requisites to supporting performance improvement in health care organizations. We understand that each facility's goal is to deliver the highest standards of healthcare safety and quality, and that thoughtful and evidenced based design is an effective way to assist caregivers, patients, and families in achieving this outcome. Nature, color, air quality, lighting, cultural responsiveness, way-finding, incorporation of technology, integration of services, and physical security are many of the elements we consider as we design our buildings. In addition, we recognize the importance of holding a budget and schedule and we are committed to honoring these on every project. To illustrate our design philosophy, we offer the following examples of two recently completed greenfield hospital projects.

Northwest Medical Center of Oro Valley, is located in a northern suburb of Tucson and is a referral hospital to the tertiary care hospital, Northwest Medical Center of Tucson. The design team's challenge for this new facility was to create a facility that would meet the needs of the community's largely retired population, as well as provide the flexibility to transform itself into a suburban hospital that could support a rapidly growing population of young families and children who were beginning to migrate to the area. The owner required a facility with a comprehensive array of primary and geriatric services that would meet the needs of his community and a facility that would assist him in recruiting and retaining talented physicians, clinicians, and technical staff. He wanted a facility that was adaptable and flexible, one that could grow with the community and one that promoted wellness and healing. Community members craved the convenience of a nearby hospital but wanted assurance that the building would blend with its surroundings and not obstruct their views of the Catalina Mountains. The city of Oro Valley mandated that this new facility spend one percent of its construction budget on public art. As a result, an ambitious collaboration between owner, design team, community, and city officials began early in the planning process and continued throughout the post occupancy phase of this project. Enhanced Staff Productivity Improving operational and staff productivity was a focal point for the team. Discussions with the nursing staff led to a redesigned nursing unit with resource substations included on every floor. The design incorporates a supply station servicing four patient rooms in each direction. As a result, nurses spend much less time traveling back and forth to a central supply area throughout the day and can spend much more time providing patient care. This design element also has the potential to reduce staffing, since nurses have more bedside time. Another idea was a wireless communications system, which has been installed throughout the facility. Small transmitters are clipped to each staff member's clothing. This gives them the ability to contact any other staff member directly and avoid noisy overhead paging that increases patient anxiety. Staff members are also better able to concentrate on their tasks because they don’t have to stop and listen to pages.

Shadow-free lighting and ceiling-mounted tools will also enable the surgical teams to operate more efficiently, which will decrease throughput time for procedures. The Emergency Department was designed more like an ICU with all rooms and equipment surrounding a central core from which the nurses and physicians can view all rooms. Medical Imaging was also located immediately adjacent to the ED so that patient transport time is cut to a bare minimum. Restorative Views, Daylight, and Public Art One of the biggest attractions to Oro Valley is the view of the mountains. The hospital was sited to maximize those views from patient and family waiting rooms. Each patient room is private and has a view of either the surrounding desert landscape or those spectacular mountains. Natural light abounds throughout the facility. Large windows in the family waiting rooms on each patient floor, in the staff lounges, and at the end of the halls on the nursing units bring in lots of daylight and afford opportunities for glimpses of the surrounding desert landscape. The main lobby and registration area are flooded with light from the clerestory windows that open into these spaces. The project team embraced the city's art initiative concept and saw it as a key to making a connection with the community. The resulting hospital has as much the feel of an art gallery as a medical facility, which helps reduce stress for both the staff and the patients and their families. In order to select just the right combination of art, GTG, the Greater Oro Valley Arts Commission staff, and hospital administration scoured over 1,000 submissions to find either individual pieces to include in the facility or to find artists whose skill and style would enhance the hospital with commissioned work. The result is a hospital filled with art that is both as familiar to its occupants as it is useful. Pieces were selected for utilitarian as well as aesthetic reasons.

Staff and families dine at outdoor tables with commissioned mosaic tile table tops and families wait under canopies on artist designed benches, visitors are reminded of the compassionate care given to them at the hospital as they pass the sculpture of a physician and child that greets them at the front door, and the soothing sounds of the water tricking down the copper wall fountain calms those in the outpatient waiting area as they wait for diagnostic tests. Environmental Awareness Brainstorming sessions with contractors led to the development of decentralized air handling for the nursing wings. This provides a number of benefits. First, environmental control can be maintained on each wing, which will eliminate the "hot in the summer, cold in the winter" problems that some facilities encounter and reduces patient complaints. Second, if a unit goes out, a complementary unit on the adjacent wing can provide air handling until the damaged unit is fixed. Third, the decentralized configuration is more energy efficient and will save the owner money. Exterior lighting and signage was designed to have minimal impact on the visibility of the nighttime desert sky. The hospital exterior is as calming and reassuring to approaching patients at night as it is during the day. Flexibility of Design To prepare for the coming growth and demographic changes, a fourth floor of shelled space was designed as part of the facility, which is expected to be used for a new obstetric service to open in the future. Since the space is shelled, build-out will allow the new beds to be quickly put on-line and construction will have a limited impact on the operational nursing units below. Ancillary wings were designed so that expansion could happen "organically" through the easy extension of hallways. For example, anywhere a potential expansion port was created, a storage room or some other non-clinical room was placed in that spot so future expansion would not require existing service areas to be shut down or disrupted. All major ancillary departments, such as surgery, emergency, imaging, etc. are located on exterior walls for ease of future expansion whether it is major or incremental.

Flexibility was built into space such as the surgery suite where all operating rooms are a standard size, each large enough to meet the space requirements for use as a major OR, whether for orthopedics, neurology, or cardiovascular surgeries. Because of its innovative and flexible design, the Oro Valley hospital will be able to grow as the community grows for decades with less expense and less inconvenience, which will enable the owner to reap a greater return on its investment. Good Business and Economic Performance As a testimony to the business benefits of evidenced based design, Paul Kappleman, CEO writes, "The new hospital has brought more and better access of healthcare services to an aging and growing population. Because of this location, unique design, focus on quality, safety, and customer service, we have seen double digit growth month after month since opening… Northwest Medical Center has played a major economic development role in the town. Opening with over 300 employees, six months later the hospital has 450 employees. Also, the hospital has been able to attract many new doctors to the area with over 20 brand new physicians coming to the community. Our medical staff has grown from 50 to over 250 in six months. The community was engaged in the process from the beginning and therefore feels loyalty and support towards the hospital." In a letter to the editor of the Arizona Star Daily, Oro Valley mayor Paul Loomis wrote, "The hospital created advisory committees and met with nearby homeowners to ensure that Northwest Medical Center - Oro Valley would be built as a community friendly hospital. We all benefit from the peace of mind of knowing superior medical care is available for all citizens."

A second example is Coastal Carolina Medical Center. This replacement hospital successfully manages space efficiency, expandability and atmosphere. The massing of the building form lifts the lines of the single story elevation, expressing its importance as a landmark while respecting the community's fabric and scale. A tower structure recalls the lighthouses which dot the South Carolina coast, representing a beacon of light and hope for health and healing throughout the community. Clerestory windows flood interior spaces throughout the facility with natural light, and internal lighting creates a soft glow during the nighttime hours. A hospital’s front entrance is often influential in how patients and their families perceive the quality of healthcare services. The lobby at Coastal Carolina Medical Center was designed to lessen patient anxiety, stress, and confusion through the blending of natural colors, materials and forms that distracts patients from the challenges of diagnosis and treatment. The space is a study of textural surfaces and sculpted planes, and lighting is used as a design feature. The lobby is a balanced of planes and shadow lines that contrast with the soft visual textures of the floor and wall coverings. The building is designed utilizing a suite concept along a public spine, originating in the central lobby, which serves as the central hub. Inpatient and outpatient traffic is clearly separated, with patients easily accessing outpatient services from the lobby. To maintain dignity, patients are transported along secondary pathways, separate from public traffic. Similarly, supplies are routed in this way to reduce public corridor activity. Spatial relationships provide convenient patient access for both critical and urgent needs, while incorporating multi-use areas for walk-in services. Spaces are configured to flow naturally between related functional areas without compromising patient care or operational efficiency.

The outpatient surgery suite features groupings of rooms for patient staging and recovery with televisions, a nourishment station and comfortable space for the family. Other service suites, such as critical care, medical/surgical, rehabilitative, and obstetric care are also located along the spine. Childbirth occurs in family-centered spaces emulating a home-like atmosphere, where natural materials and colors are introduced to enhance the birthing experience. Every detail was designed, from the shape of the chair and type of art displayed to "on demand" food service. Patients can order room service by phone from the kitchen at any time, day or night. The food is then delivered on trays to the patient's room. The designers' goals were to create a healing environment for the whole patient experience, while remaining sensitive to the cost and continuous improvement of providing health care services safely and efficiently.
