The next time you reach for an over-the-

counter product to treat your upset stomach

or heartburn, consider whether you should

choose one of the many antacids that don’t

contain aspirin. Aspirin-containing medi-

cines that treat heartburn, sour stomach,

acid indigestion or upset stomach can cause

stomach or intestinal bleeding, especially in

some people, warns the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration (FDA). Take a close look at

the Drug Facts label, and if the product con-

tains aspirin, consider choosing something

else for your stomach symptoms, the FDA

advises. Examples are Alka-Seltzer or other

effervescent antacid products.

That doesn’t mean people need to stop taking

aspirin for other purposes, the FDA notes.

Talk with your doctor about whether aspirin

for inflammation, pain relief, etc. is appro-

priate for you. If your doctor has advised

you to take an aspirin a day to help prevent

a heart attack or other condition, don’t stop

without talking with him or her first.

Make sure you discuss with your doctor what

kind of medicine you can take in case you get

an upset stomach. There are plenty of stom-

ach medicines that don’t contain aspirin.

movement varies, but people

normally have as many as three

bowel movements a day to as few

as three a week. You may be con-

stipated if you have fewer bowel

movements than are normal for

you. In addition, constipation

may involve stools that are diffi-

cult to pass because they’re hard,

dry or small.

wheat bran, fruits, vegetables

and oats.

• Drink plenty of fluids daily.

• Exercise regularly.

Dandruff is the excess shedding of the top

layer of the skin on the scalp. It is normal

for these cells to be shed. However, with

dandruff, larger “scales” are shed at an

increased rate. There is nothing medically

serious about it. It will not lead to bald-

ness, and it is not contagious.

Those who have acne or oily skin also tend

to have more problems with dandruff.

The cause is unclear. Frequent washing

with a regular shampoo is the most impor-

tant treatment for dandruff. If frequent

washing with a regular shampoo does not

control dandruff, try a dandruff shampoo.

Dermatologists recommend alternating a

regular shampoo with an antifungal dan-

druff shampoo when dandruff appears.

Dandruff shampoos may need to be used

routinely to control dandruff. As symp-

toms improve, you may use them less fre-

quently.

Seek medical help if:

• Itching associated with dandruff

increases

• Using a dandruff shampoo fails to

control the problem adequately

• Inflammation (redness, swelling, severe

scaling) occurs on the scalp or on other

parts of the body

Green Beans with Mushrooms and Shallots

Serves 6

Dressing down some of our holiday favorites can not only be healthier but actually

can awaken our taste buds. Without all the mushroom soup and canned fried

onions, you can actually taste the delicious individual flavors of the green beans,

shallots and mushrooms in this side dish.

Ingredients:

1 pound fresh green beans,

trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces

Water for steaming

2 tablespoons olive oil

1/3 cup sliced shallots

(about 2 medium)

3/4 pound assorted fresh mushrooms,

sliced (your choice of button, baby

portabella, shiitake, oyster or any

combination)

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Set a steamer basket insert into a large saucepan and fill with water to a level just

below the steamer. Bring to a boil. Add green beans and steam to your desired

degree of tenderness (about 5 minutes). Once the beans have cooked, remove the

cover, drain the beans in a colander and set aside.*

To cook the shallots and mushrooms, heat the oil over medium-high heat in a

large nonstick skillet. Add the shallots and cook, stirring until softened slightly,

about 2 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until the

moisture they release evaporates and they begin to brown, about 10 minutes. Add

the green beans and stir to combine until the beans are once again warm. Season

with salt and pepper and serve.

* If short on stove-top space (and who isn’t during holiday meals?), you can also

steam the green beans in the microwave. Put them in a microwave-safe bowl with

1 tablespoon water. Cover tightly and microwave on high for 4 minutes. Follow

directions above.

Diabetes is a group of diseases in which glucose levels are higher than normal. The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin that helps glucose enter the body’s cells. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin very well. Type 2 is the most common type in adults and accounts for more than 90% of all diabetes cases.

Smokers are 30 to 40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, compared with nonsmokers. And people with diabetes who smoke are more likely than nonsmokers to have trouble controlling their disease. Smokers with diabetes also have higher risks for serious complications, including:

• Heart and kidney disease

• Poor blood flow in the legs and feet that can lead to infections, ulcers and possible amputation

• Retinopathy (an eye disease that can cause blindness)

• Peripheral neuropathy (damaged nerves in the arms and legs that can cause numbness, pain, weakness and poor coordination)

What Kind of Cough Is It?Acute coughs last less than three weeks and usu-ally are caused by the common cold or other infec-tions such as sinusitis or pneumonia. Welcome, October! It’s time to make sure you’re using up the dollars you’ve stashed in your 2017 Flexible Spending Account (FSA). Although employer plans vary, FSA expenses generally must occur no later than December 31. Schedule doctor visits before the end-of-year rush. Is it time to think about enrolling in Medicare (or changing coverage during this period)? The first time you can enroll is

Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) cov-ers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care and some home-healthcare. Diaper rash can be caused by irritation from stool or urine; friction from diapers; yeast infection; or an allergic reac-tion to soap, laundry detergent, fabric softener, baby wipes or lotions. In many cases, it can be prevented. Try these tips:

• Change the diaper as soon as it’s wet or soiled.

• Allow your baby’s skin to dry completely before put-ting on another diaper.

• Secure diapers loosely to allow airflow.

• Wash your hands before and after changing diapers to prevent spreading germs that could cause infections.

• Some babies get rashes often. You can apply a barrier ointment to help prevent irritation. Products containing zinc oxide (such as Desitin) or petroleum (such as Vaseline) are good choices.

• Don’t use powders, such as cornstarch or baby powder.

Spinach Salad with Bacon VinaigretteServes 4This easy salad can be dressed up or down, depending on what else you’re serving. To make it a main-dish salad, add your choice of additional veggies, chopped boiled eggs, fruits, cheeses and/or nuts. The sweet-and-sour vinaigrette, with a touch of bacon (1/2 slice per serving; just enough to flavor the vinaigrette), really lends itself to either savory or sweet additions. Let your imagination and your family’s personal tastes dictate what you add.

Ingredients:2 center-cut uncured bacon slices1 1/2 tablespoons cider vinegar 1 1/2 teaspoons brown sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Dash of kosher salt 6 cups washed fresh spinach

Optional savory add-ons: Feta cheese, blue cheese, parmesan cheese, red bell pepper, red onion, chopped boiled eggs, cubed avocado

Optional fruit add-ons: Pineapple chunks, blueberries, strawberries, dried sweet cherries, thin apple or pear slices, mango, papaya, blackberries, dried cranberries, raisins

Cook bacon until crisp. Remove bacon from pan; crumble.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infects the nose, throat and air passages of the lungs. Almost all children have had an RSV infection by the time they reach preschool. RSV is carried on secretions and it’s easy to catch. It generally causes only cold-like symptoms in adults and older children. The first signs of infection are usually a runny nose and red throat. Over the next couple of days, the child becomes sicker with a cough, wheezing and sometimes a low-grade fever or an ear infection. There may be nasal drainage.

Most children get better by themselves. Some babies and young children (and some adults over age 65) will get sicker. This can happen quickly. Contact your doctor if your infant or child has breathing that becomes faster (more than 40 to 60 breaths/minute), has trouble breathing or has irritability/restlessness. If your infant or child has breathing pauses of 10 to 15 seconds or longer, seek emergency help.

Women who eat more high-fiber foods during adolescence and young adulthood, especially lots of fruits and vegetables, may have significantly lower breast cancer risk than those who eat less fiber when young, according to a recent Harvard University study.

“This work on the role of nutrition in early life and breast cancer incidence suggests one of the very few potentially modifiable risk factors for premenopausal breast cancer,” said Maryam Farvid, lead author of the study.

In 1991, the researchers began studying 90,534 women ages 27 to 44. The women filled out questionnaires about their food intake every four years. They also complet-

ed a questionnaire about their diet during high school.

Breast cancer risk was 12 to 19% lower among women who ate more dietary fiber in early adulthood, depending on how much more they ate. High intake of fiber during adolescence was also associated with 16% lower risk of overall breast cancer and 24% lower risk of breast cancer before meno-pause. Among all the women, there was a strong inverse association between fiber intake and breast cancer incidence.
