HEALTH OCCUPATIONS EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT GUIDE SERIES

INTRODUCTION

The HOE Pro Qm Development Guide Series consists of anumber of bullet ns designed to assist local occupationaleducation administrators and Health Occupations Educationpersonnel in planning, developing, and implementing programsto prepare youth and adults for work in the Health ServicesIndustry. Each bulletin focuses on a particular HealthOccupations Education program area and draws upon the mostcurrent resources available.

The HOE Program Development Guide for each programarea is designed to provide information relative to possibleprogram description, clustering of occupations for training,steps in establishing the program, basic program components,organization of program components in terms of occupationalclusters selected, course outline, space and equipment forteaching the program, qualifications of potential students,scheduling ideas, selected resources, and other pertinentinformation.

Once th.:. need for a program in a Health OccupationsEducation area is identified, the first responsibility oflocal program planners is to appoint an advisory committeeof representative experts in the field. With the adviceand counsel of such a group, the HOE Program DevelopmentGuide will be a useful document to alert planners to theseveral important aspects of the program development.

Each bulletin in this series will serve as the tem-porary guide to offer immediate direi.ttion until an officialNew York State curriculum guide can be developed for theHealth Occupations Education program area. Prepared bymembers of the staff of the Bureau of Health OccupationsEducation, these guides will be issued occasionally ascompleted.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Dental Assisting program is designed to prepare youth and adultsfor work in an assisting capacity under the supervision of the dentistand/or other professional, licensed dental personnel. The curriculum isplanned to provide training for the Dental Assistant, and focuses onskills and knowledge appropriate to the role of the assistant at chair-side, in the dental operatory, in the dental laboratory, and in thedental office and reception area. Instruction, practice, and work exper-ience in actual job situations under professional supervision are impor-tant program components. Length of program will depend upon occupationaloutcomes locally identified.

POSSIBLE PLACES OF EMPLOYMENT

Work under professional supervision may be performed in such placesas: hospital clinics, neighborhood or community health centers, dentaloffices, dental supply houses, retirement community infirmaries,

ACCREDITATION OF DENTAL ASSISTING PROGRAMS

It is the policy of the Council on Dental Education to accredit

programs for the training of dental assistants, providing that adminis-

trators reponsible for the program indicate a desire for evaluation.

DENTAL ASSISTANT CERTIFICATION

Upon completion of the required formal training, graduates of

accredited programs are eligible to take the certification examination

conducted by the Certifying Board of the American Dental Assistants

Associatiun.
