Shining ResultsTWO BUSINESSES FORGE AN ALLIANCE
FOR HEALTH, FITNESS AND BEAUTY
by Jane K. Dove
With a mission of promoting health, fit-
ness and beauty both inside and out, Shine
Salon and Results Personal Training and
Fitness, located within a short walk of one
another in downtown Ridgefield, are part-
nering in a cross-promotion designed to
help area residents achieve their goals for
the New Year.
Jean-Pierre and Salim Mikhael, co-owners
of Results, met Erin Simmons, owner of
Shine, and her public relations coordinator,
Laura Palo, while co-hosting a breast-can-
cer-awareness event last fall.
The four became friendly, with the two
women sharing some of their weight- loss
issues. Jean-Pierre and Salim quickly hit
upon the idea of cross-promoting their two
businesses and challenged the two women
to a total health-and-fitness transformation
over a three-month period.
Shine has a mission of wellness and is an
Aveda Lifestyle Salon, said Erin. We use
only the purest salon products available
and promote wellness from inside and
out. With both of us struggling with our
weight for years, we decided to take up
the challenge and also keep our clients in
the loop through an ongoing blog and on
Facebook.
Jean Pierre said. We knew this would be
a tough time of the year, with the holidays
and parties. But we didnt want a one-
and-done approach. We were interested in
long-term results and lifestyle changes.
Shining Results
And the results tell the tale. Between early
October and the end of December Erin, start-
ing at 277 pounds, lost a total of 24 pounds.
She dropped nine inches off her waist, four
from her hips and five from her bust.
Laura, starting at 195 pounds, lost a total of
13 pounds. Her waist, hips and bust shrank
five inches each.
Thrilled with the results, the two women
decided to forego their original three-
month, January-end date and keep going
for another three months. We developed
a support system at Shine that really kept
us energized, said Laura. People read our
blog and kept us going with their words
of encouragement. At Results, both JP and
Salim were wonderful at supporting us
week-to-week.
The Program
John-Pierre said the program he and his
brother used for the two women was
straightforward. We used strength-train-
ing, both free weights and machines. Circuit
training and high-intensity intervals were
incorporated into the strength-training rou-

For young clients, a therapistwho understands being young
by Lois Alcosser
At Cornell, during her college years,
Katherine Ryan Haines started a tutoring
business, and she stayed with eight of
the families for 10 years. I saw the chil-
dren through middle school, high school
and graduate school, and what started off
as tutoring became working with them
through the emotional years of adoles-
cence. Spending so much time with families
in New Canaan, Stamford and Greenwich,
it seemed natural to continue working with
teenagers and their families, she says.
Katherine got her masters degree in social
work, did many internships with adoles-
cents and was a therapist at Silver Hill
and Hall Brooke. Growing up in Fairfield
County and having lived and survived
adolescence here myself, I understand the
culture and the family dynamics of the
area, she said.
People have a lot more advantages, but
they also have tremendous pressure to
keep up academically, physically, socially
especially high school students. They
have to live up to their parents, in terms of
what they should achieve. In this economy,
it can be devastating to graduate from a
top-tier school and not be able to find a
job, and often not even know what you
want to do or how to go about it.
Each clients situation is totally individual.
The one-on-one relationship with my cli-
ents is whats most important. When
young people come to me, they can tell
me whats really going on. They dont
have to make themselves look good or
sound impressive. Young women, espe-
cially, need someone supporting them.
When theyre nervous about confronting
something new, they know Katherine is
cheerleading for them and that gives them
a sense of safety.
A major factor in freeing adolescents to
tell whats really happening is the con-
fidentiality factor, which Katherine judi-
ciously observes. I dont share anything
with parents that I havent been given
permission to share, she said. However,
if someone is seriously depressed and
possibly considering a form of self-harm,
parents must be notified. Silver Hill is
right down the road. Having worked there

and at Hall Brooke, I have contact with
many physicians.
Parents are the ones who usually are the
first to realize theres a problem. One of the
things thats so different about adolescents
lives today is the social media factor. Young
people are texting each other more than
theyre talking face-to-face. Everything is
so social-media driven ... this becomes the
one place where they can just talk one on
one. Ten years ago this wasnt happening. I
think about social media a lot because my
clients are in that world. Young women,
especially, have to renegotiate their ideas
about boundaries. They can put too much
out there too soon, she said.
Parents are treating kids as if theyre
much older than they really are. Young
people still have to feel monitored and
protected, despite their objections. Parents
have a tough time with young girls acting
13 but looking 17... and feeling miserable.
I hear all the time that my young clients
are different at home than when theyre
at their grandparents house. When kids to
go to their grandparents, they have permis-
sion to be the age they are do activities
that dont have to do with technology. Its
a wonderfully safe break. Scrabble, making
cookies and unconditional love, she said.
Parents, on the other hand, are under such
different pressure. Its good for parents to
try to absorb more of what goes on in a
grandparents house in their own homes.
Sometimes psychology can go off the
deep end and maintain a very profes-
sional wall, Katherine said. But its the
closeness between therapist and patient
thats the most important, and whats
tried and true. Its very hard work to start
living differently and overcome old hab-
its. When you want to feel better, its a
real commitment. Everyone falters, thats
human, but when you feel supported,
change can happen. It isnt magical. Its
very hard work.

Did you ever notice how busy your mind
is? The reality is the mind is a thinking
machine and its running all the time. We
are so distracted by obligations, responsi-
bilities, needs and desires that we barely
notice whats happening around us. Our
lives are unfolding moment by moment,
yet we dont seem to notice or pay much
attention.
The nature of this distracted and obses-
sive thinking can cause both physical and
emotional suffering. The mind, which is
the thinking part of the brain, is always
on alert, scanning the environment for
perceived threats or danger. It is con-
stantly reviewing the past or planning for
the future, while at the same time, trying
to avoid emotional, painful and pursue
pleasurable experiences. Simultaneously,
your brain is managing thoughts, solving
problems and managing all the vital sys-
tems of your body. Unfortunately, all of this
thinking causes us to be distracted. This
distracted and obsessive thinking is how
we cause our own suffering.
The good news is that there is probably
nothing seriously wrong with you. The
problem is your brain. Why do our brains
work this way? Why do we spend so much
time scanning for threats, thinking about
the past or worrying about the future?
The answer is rooted in our past. Many
thousands of years ago, along with our
opposing thumbs, the brain evolved as a
key asset to our survival. We had to rely on
our brains to gather food, find shelter and
worry about the saber-toothed tiger lurking
in the forest.
Many things have changed over the years,
yet some things have stayed the same. We
are still busy shopping for food, working
on our homes and worrying about the next
problem or threat. Our brains have evolved
over the years as well. However, many of
the basic brain functions remain the same.
When applied to the modern world, these
basic brain functions of reviewing the past
and worrying about the future can cause
havoc with our thinking.
This obsessive thinking creates stress
which activates the fight or flight response.
Constant activation of the stress response
releases a steady flow of neurochemicals
and hormones into the body, which can
cause or contribute to anxiety, depression
and many other health problems.
There are many things we can do to help
reduce our distracted and obsessive think-
ing. Many of us exercise regularly, practice
yoga, hike or go to a spa to try and reduce
stress and bring balance into our lives.
Unfortunately, some of us may use alcohol,
food or other compulsions to try to reduces
stress or avoid dealing with thoughts or
feelings. Some of these strategies can be

Do you see it? Its called a herniated disc, a painful condition that can cause severe sciatic nerve
pain. And now you can knock out this painful problem with a new non-surgical and drugless spinal
breakthrough. If you or a loved one suffers from disc herniations, sciatica, or back pain, you must
read these facts at once...
Can You Spot The Serious BackProblem On This MRI?
Low back pain can be a crippling experience.
You might not be able to play golf, work, or even sit in the car fora 30-minute drive. It feels impossible for anyone around you to
understand how you feel. You cant remember the last time you
even had a restful nights sleep.
Nothings worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling
held back from life because your back or sciatica hurts and the pain
just wont go away!
Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions?
Sciatica
Lower Back Pain
Herniated/bulging discs
Facet syndromes
Muscle spasm, sprains & strains
Fortunately, if you are suffering from any of these problems,
they may be relieved or eliminated by non-surgical spinal
decompression treatments.
The Single Most Important Solution To Your Sciatica
and Back Pain
If youve been hearing about DRX 9000 spinal decompression, or
always wanted to check it out and see what it can do for you, now
is the best time.

Youll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing
treatment will beyourpain solution, like it has been for so many
other patients.
Call today...Phone 800-673-5016
No Dangerous Drugs, No Invasive Procedures, And No
Painful Exercises
DRX 9000 spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In
fact, every once in a while I even catch a patient sleeping during
sessions.
Youll simply lie on your back, and a specialized belt is gently put
around your waist. Well set the machine to focus on your problemarea then the advanced decompression computer system will do
the rest.
What Are The Chances This Will Work For Me?
One clinical study has shown non-surgicalspinal decompression
to be extremely successful (good or excellent relief) in 86%
of patients with herniated discs and degenerative joint disease
without the side effects.
Another study presented at the American Academy of Pain
Management in 2007 showed...
Patients reported a mean 88.9% improvement in back pain and
better function...No patient required any invasive therapies (e.g.
epidural injections, surgery).
As you can see, DRX 9000 spinal decompression has a high
success rate with helping disc herniations, sciatica, and back pain.
In just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again.
But I feel fine as long as I take my pain pills.
Theres a time to use pain medications, BUT not before seeking a
natural way to correct the CAUSE of the problem! Ask yourself ...
after taking allthese pain medications and playing the wait and
see game, maybe for years...are you any better off?
Call anytime between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm Monday
through Friday. Tell the receptionist youd like to come in for the
DRX 9000 Decompression Evaluation before February 29, 2012.
We can get started with your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon
as theres an opening in the schedule. Our office is called Westport
Chiropractic and you can find us at 256 Post Road East. I look
forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a
healthier, more joyful life.
Sincerely,
Dr. Patrick Guerin D.C.

P.S. The only real question to ask yourself is this...
What Will Your Pain Feel Like
1 Month From Today?
One of the biggest myths about pain is that it goes away all byitself, without any treatment.
A May 1998 study in the British Medical Journal proved this myth
false, showing that 75% of back pain sufferers who do nothing
about it will have either pain or disability 12 months later.
Lets face it, if the pain hasnt gone away by now, its not likely to
disappear on its own.
Lifes too short to live in pain like this. Call today and soon I ll be
giving you the green light to have fun again. Phone 800-673-5016

Reflexology: Sole to soul ... heel to healby Lois Alcosser
Its been said that reflexology has been
rediscovered time and time again.
Egyptian hieroglyphics from 2000 B.C.
show figures which appear to be illustrat-
ing a medical practice similar to reflexol-
ogy. Chinese traditional medicine has
included reflexology since ancient times.
In China today, Foot Massage signs are
a common sight. Though reflexology can
be done on hands, feet or ears, American
reflexology is usually done on the feet.
There are 7,200 nerve endings in each
foot that connect to every part of the
body. In fact, as reflexology charts show,
each foot is a map of the body the
left foot representing the left half and
the right foot the right half. Pressure is
applied to the reflex zone that relates
to a specific part of the body, prompt-
ing a change in that part of the body.
What actually happens is that crystals of
calcium and uric acid (toxic waste) that
have built up in the body are dispersed,
along with poor circulation and nerve
blockage.
Many, many studies have been conducted
to assess reflexologys benefits. Reduction
of pain and stress are primary results. It
improves circulation, helps in post-surgical
recovery, reduces depression and anxiety.
It eases the effects of chemotherapy by
reducing nausea. It is also a technique that
maintains wellness, energy and balance in
a pleasurable, relaxing way.
The science of reflexology has been well
documented, but because it involves a
giver and a receiver, it is an art that
depends on the skill and sensitivity of the
reflexologist. Pippa Martin and Nanette
Ginise are experienced reflexologists who
actually call themselves healers. Pippa
was trained in the United States and the
United Kingdom. Her touch is intuitive.
She says that when she treats a client,
she can almost see her hands entering
the persons body. Nanette is steeped in
traditional Chinese reflexology. She trav-
els to China frequently to observe, learn
and experience the nuances of traditional
medicine, practiced there since ancient
times.
Pippa has helped many cancer patients
by making chemotherapy less debilitat-
ing. She also brings peace and pleasure to
many who may be terminally ill because
the treatment can be so comforting, while
reducing anxiety. I didnt come to reflex-
ology, she says. It came to me. My
hands seem to tell me what to do, what
kind of pressure to apply, where the focus
of need is. Very often, pain somewhere
in the body is caused by a problem else-
where, and reflexology helps get at the
source of the pain.
In China, Nanette says, reflexology
is done more deeply, in fact it often

helpful, while others may cause additional
problems.
All of these strategies have one thing in
common: They all involve physical action.
They are all about doing.
Mindfulness and mindfulness meditation
is about being. Its like exercise for the
brain. Just like regular physical exercise
helps build strength and endurance, mind-
fulness and mindfulness meditation can
help develop your concentration and build
emotional strength.
Mindfulness is the antidote for your busy
mind. Mindfulness is a technique and
practice that can help us learn how to pay
attention and stay focused on the present.
Staying focused on the present helps reduce
reactivity and restore balance and order to
our thinking. It can help us accept things as
they are, not the way we want them to be.
Mindfulness helps us raise our awareness
and teaches us that our thoughts are not
facts. It provides a structure to help process
our thoughts and improves our ability to
think about what we think about.
There are two types of mindfulness prac-
tice daily mindfulness and mindfulness
meditation. Daily mindfulness is the prac-
tice of paying attention and staying focused
on the present moment throughout your
day. It may sound easy but it is actually
quite challenging. Our minds tend to be
restless and unpredictable, buzzing with
impulses, fears and desires. The reality is
that we spend most of our day on autopi-
lot, mindlessly drifting between the past
and the future. Daily mindfulness takes
practice and commitment. Over time one
can cultivate the ability to pay attention
and stay focused on the present moment.
The addition of mindfulness meditation
can help develop your daily mindfulness
skills. Mindfulness meditation is a formal
practice that helps develop inner peace as
well as emotional strength and awareness.
Unlike other forms of meditation that help
clear your mind, mindfulness meditation
helps you witness your thoughts and feel-
ings without engagement or judgment.
The goal is to develop a level of comfort
and familiarity with your thoughts, feelings
and the habits of your mind. This familiar-
ity and awareness helps build emotional
stamina. Emotional stamina helps you
deal with your emotions and the stress of
daily life.
Anyone can learn how to be more mind-
ful or develop a meditation practice. All
it takes is a willing attitude and a desire
to improve your physical and emotional
well-being.

hurts. My technique is much gentler. I can
tell if a client is ready for a greater depth
of massage or needs a softer touch. To be
most effective, like any other therapy, one
treatment isnt going to magically elimi-
nate a painful shoulder or persistent ache,
but it will bring relief. Headaches can be
treated with almost immediate results.
Pippa explains: Most visits to a doctor are
for problems caused by tension. All of us
hold tension in our bodies. This impairs
circulation, blocks energy, makes us feel
sluggish or vaguely ill. Reflexology chang-
es these feelings very successfully.
Pippa does massage, uses aromatherapy
and is a Reiki master, but she says that
over the years shes found that reflexol-
ogy has more profound effects. It clears
up any stagnation energetically, frees the
nerves and blood flow. I dont see a per-
son just made up of bones, muscles and
skin. I see into a body. Pippa has worked
with children and colicky, constipated
babies.
Reflexology is a detoxification process,
Nanette says. Think of how our feet
bear the brunt of the day. When the right
pressure is applied to the foot, circulation
improves, the legs start feeling wonder-
ful, sleep is improved, theres new-found
energy.

tine, which we personally supervised. Erin and Laura did
their own cardio work, some using our equipment here and
some outside the gym.
Sessions at Results were held three times a week, with the
brothers keeping the two women highly motivated.
We also helped them make dietary adjustments without
recommending any specific diet, Jean-Pierre said. It was
more a matter of encouraging them to watch what they ate
and become aware of it rather than any type of restrictive,
structured-eating program.
Both women are thrilled with their progress and want to
encourage their customers and friends to think about fol-
lowing in their footsteps at Results.
I have been overweight my entire life, Erin said. Like
many women, its been an up-and-down struggle. Having to
answer to these guys and having a mutual support system
made the difference.
Laura agrees. It wasnt painful, we actually enjoyed it,
she said.
Jean-Pierre said his goal for the two women was a weight
loss of about two pounds a week. We were very success-
ful at maintaining that, with only one week when a small
weight-gain was registered, he said.
Salim said he believed one of reasons for Erins and Lauras
success was a low-key approach. We used the same
approach that we use for our regular members, he said.
We are supportive and encouraging and dont get in their
faces the way some trainers do.
Going Forward
Encouraging others to get the same great results that Erin
and Laura achieved tops the to-do list for Shine and Results
for the beginning of 2012.
We are still offering a cross promotion which began in
January and ends March 1, where you can get a 45-min-
ute training session at Results, a facial, shampoo, scalp
massage and blow-dry at Shine by using one of the 500
gift certificates we handed out at last Decembers Holiday
Stroll, said Laura.
Going forward, the two businesses plan to make the cross
promotion of wellness inside and out a permanent fixture.
We are still working out the exact details and will have
them publicized at both of our businesses, said Jean-
Pierre.
Erin summed up her feelings about the progress she has
made so far and plans to make over the next three months.
For the first time in a long time I could keep up while play-
ing outside with my kids. It was a wonderful feeling!
