PSYLLIUM

Everyday Fibre Made Easy

Introduction

This product is beneficial for the digestive system because it provides 4.9 grams of total dietary fibre.

Psyllium

This perennial weed grows low to the ground and produces small white flowers. Each seed from the plant is enclosed by a husk. Psyllium hulls are the cleaned, dried seed coat of Plantago indica, Plantago ovata, or Plantago psyllium separated by winnowing and thrashing. The plant is native to the Mediterranean, North Africa, and Western Africa.

Traditional Use

In Chinese medical literature, psyllium was first mentioned in the Divine Husbandman’s classic of Materia Medica around 220 BC. The Chinese treated bloody urine, coughing, and high blood pressure with psyllium. The herb entered European folk medicine during the sixteenth century as a demulcent (soothing the digestive tract), laxative, and diuretic. After World War I, it was employed in the United States.

Scientific Information

The psyllium hull absorbs eight to fourteen times its weight in water to become a gelatinous mass. The hull contains ten to thirty percent mucilage (polysaccharides), which attract and hold water. Many weight loss products and diet aids use psyllium hulls to fill the stomach and reduce appetite. Psyllium did aid the reduction of body weight in one study.

The increased volume of intestinal contents reduces colonic transit time (due to increased peristalsis) and the frequency of defecation. Many commercial laxatives use psyllium hulls in their preparations. The German Commission E describes the herb as a bulk-forming laxative and antidiarrhoeal. Clinical studies have determined it is effective for both constipation and diarrhoea. The amount of liquid in the diet determines a laxative or astringent effect.

Also, psyllium provides relief from the pain, bleeding, and itching associated with haemorrhoids. A clinical trial of 393 patients with anal fissures found conservative treatment with psyllium effective. In five years of follow-up, 44 percent of the patients were cured without surgery normally within four to eight weeks.

In another study, psyllium protected experimental animals from intestinal damage by toxic food additives. The increased bulk of the stools allowed the chemicals less direct contact with sensitive intestinal tissues. Researchers believe this mechanism explains the reduced risk of colorectal cancer associated with eating a high-fibre diet.

Numerous clinical studies have documented psyllium’s ability to lower total serum cholesterol and LDL (low density lipoproteins) cholesterol levels by 10 to 20 percent. In one study, 26 patients took psyllium hulls three times per day for eight weeks. After four weeks, significant decreases in the total serum cholesterol level, LDL cholesterol level, and LDL/HDL (high density lipoproteins)

Page 9: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

ratio was observed. Even in hypercholesterolemic people who consume a low fat, low cholesterol diet, supplementation with psyllium will produce a further reduction of 7 to 17 percent of total cholesterol and 9 to 20 percent of LDL cholesterol. Of the published reports on controlled studies, 91 percent report significant reduction in serum cholesterol levels. The mechanism for lowering cholesterol appears to be increased excretion of bile acids, which in turn leads to further synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol.

Safety

Use of psyllium hulls is contraindicated for stenoses (strictures) of the gastrointestinal tract and diabetes mellitus where insulin adjustment is difficult. Allergic reactions have been reported in persons regularly exposed to psyllium dust.

GRAPE SEED EXTRACT

A Powerful Antioxidant

Introduction

This formula combines pine bark and grape seed extracts. This combination offers the most powerful antioxidant known, which has proven to be fifty times stronger than vitamin E and twenty times stronger than vitamin C.

Grape Seed Extract

The proanthocyanindins (or catechin polymers) in this formula can be found in many plants including purple, red and white grapes, pine bark, lemon tree bark, hazelnut tree leaves, blueberries, cherries, cranberries and others. However, purple grapes have the highest concentration of proanthocyanidins. For this formula, proanthocyanidins have been extracted from purple grapes harvested in vineyards across Italy and France.

Traditional Use

There is no long history of traditional use of grape extracts for medicinal or therapeutic purposes. However, for centuries many cultures have consumed large amounts of red wine. In such cultures, particularly the French, there is a low rate of cardiovascular disease thought to be related to the high consumption of red wine. The low rate of cardiovascular disease among the French in spite of a diet heavily laden with fatty foods is known to some researchers as the “French paradox.” It was a French scientist, Jacques Masquelier, who noted that grape seeds are the most active substances in the battle against free radicals and patented a method for extracting their active ingredient, proanthocyanidins, in the 1970s.

Scientific Information

Grape seed extract contains nutritionally essential fatty acids, vitamin E and vitamin C. It contains between 92 and 95 percent proanthocyanidins, the highest concentration found in any plant. Procyanidolic oligomers (PCOs) refers to collective mixtures of proanthocyanidin (also known as procyanins or leukocyanidins) oligomers, trimers, tetramers and larger molecules. PCOs are plant bioflavonoids which, due to their chemical structures, are easily incorporated within cell membranes, making them easily accessible to cell organelles for their many protective properties.

One of the most widely recognized benefits of grape seed extract is its ability to protect against cardiovascular disease caused by cell damage and elevated blood cholesterol levels. Cells are damaged by free radicals released from the body’s metabolic processes which can invade cells and attack their nuclei. Excessive blood cholesterol is caused by peroxidised lipid compounds which have become rancid. According to recent studies, the PCOs in grape seed extract protect cells from oxidative and freed radical damage in several ways. 1) They trap free radicals and lipid peroxides; 2) They delay the onset of lipid peroxidation; 3) They noncompetitively inhibit free radical production by the enzyme xanthine oxidase; 4) They inhibit the damaging effects of the enzymes that can degrade connective tissue structures. These combined efforts help prevent heart disease as well as intermittent claudication (pain in the legs caused by lack of blood flow) and many other vascular disorders caused by arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries accelerated by elevated

Page 11: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

blood cholesterol). Experimental evidence suggests that the constituents from grape extracts reduce the mortality rate from vascular diseases.

Another protective property of PCOs involves collagen. They have been demonstrated to non-competitively inhibit several proteolytic enzymes including collagenase, elastase, hyaluronidase and beta-glucuronidase. These enzymes are involved in the turnover of the main structural components of a connective tissue matrix composed of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This matrix maintains the integrity of ground substance, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. It also supports the structure of skin and blood vessels.

PCOs support collagen structures by helping crosslink collagen fibres to reinforce the matrices. They also prevent free radical damage and destruction of collagen fibres in much the same way they protect vascular tissue. In addition, they inhibit cleavage of collagen by enzymes secreted by leukocytes during inflammation and by microbes during infection. Another way in which they protect collagen fibres from damage by inflammation is in preventing the release and synthesis of compounds that promote inflammation such as histamine, serine proteases, prostaglandins and leukotrienes.

The ability of grape seed extract to protect and maintain the integrity of collagen fibres is beneficial in protecting against several degenerative disorders. It helps stop and even reverse the effects of aging in skin, keeping it looking young and healthier and reducing risks of skin cancer caused by free radical damage from the sun and environmental toxins. It also helps prevent rheumatoid arthritis and bone fragility associated with aging.

Pink Bark Extract

For this formula active ingredients are extracted from the bark of maritime pine (Pinus Pinaster) trees growing along the southern coast of France from Bordeaux to the Spanish border.

Traditional Use

Therapeutic use of pink bark extract dates back several centuries among native Americans. They drank a tea made from brewed pine bark and needle extract. In the 1500’s when the French explorer, Jacques Cartier, and his crew were stranded at the St. Lawrence waterway, their food supply was limited to salted meat and biscuits. Many of the crew members developed scurvy, a normally fatal disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. A native American suggested that they try drinking their tea. They tried it and soon after their scurvy was relieved.

Many years later, in the twentieth century a French scientist, Dr Jacques Masquelier studied the account of Cartier and his crew and began researching the constituents of pine bark and their benefits. His interest was stimulated by dermatological and phlebological disorders in his patients. He used pine bark extract to successfully treat 45 of their patients having eczema, ulcerated varicose veins and related disorders. In 1951, he patented a process to extract the active constituents from pine bark.

Scientific Information

Like grape seed extract, pine bark extract contains PCOs. They have been experimentally demonstrated to have the same benefits as the PCOs from grape seed extract. However, this extract not only contains PCOs, but also 40 other active organic compounds. Together, these constituents help to; retard aging, improve circulation, visual acuity and flexibility, reduce wrinkling of skin,

Page 12: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

resist bruising, resist mental deterioration and reduce risks of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Pine bark extract corrects disorders such as edema and microbleeding by restoring optimal health to capillaries. It maintains a healthy capillary system in several ways. It helps protect vitamin C which is needed for production of collagen. It adheres to collagen, offering extra protection. It also protects against free radical attack after a channel in a capillary membrane becomes a leak. By reducing the fragility and vulnerability of capillaries, it helps prevent bruising, improves varicose veins, reduces restless legs and diminishes lower leg blood volume, reducing swelling.

Pine bark extract has proven to be very effective in enhancing brain function. It protects blood vessels and capillaries, ensuring an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients to brain tissues. In addition, its chemical structure allows it to cross the blood brain barrier to directly protect brain cells from damage. This helps improve memory and reduces senility.

Pine bark extract is not only a powerful antioxidant itself, but is also synergistic with other known antioxidants. Precursors of cholesterol, low density lipoproteins (LDLs), normally contain vitamin E which protects them from oxidation. However, vitamin E can be destroyed by excess oxygen or free radicals. Vitamin C helps regenerate this destroyed vitamin E. Constituents in pine bark extract further aid the protection of LDLs from oxidation by protecting vitamin C.

HEART AND CIRCULATION FORMULA

Introduction

This formula is designed to strengthen the heart and circulatory system. Three herbs—capsicum, hawthorn berries and garlic—work together to support this system.

Capsicum

Capsicum (Capsicum annum) is a traditional spice used in Latin America and other tropical regions. It has an extensive history of folk use including treatment of asthma, skin inflammations, cancer and respiratory infections. Many cultures for centuries have declared capsicum a “wonder drug”.

Capsicum was employed for centuries to stop bleeding. It has reportedly healed peptic ulcers. In the intestine it releases endogenous gastric secretagogues, increasing tissue perfusion by blood as well as secretory activity. This affects muscosal cells that coat the walls of the intestine and help to soothe and heal ulcers.

Numerous studies of gastrointestinal disorders dispute the former myth that capsicum was irritating to the gastrointestinal tract. In one study, it increased orocaecal (from mouth to large intestine)

transit time by affecting peristalsis.3,4 In other studies, it exhibited a gastroprotective property on

mucosal injury in humans.5

Scientific Information

The active component of capsicum is a phenolic derivative called capsaicin. The primary effect of capsaicin is to increase the circulation of blood to peripheral tissues, ensuring that nutrients are delivered to inflamed and infected areas. Capsaicin acts immediately upon the heart, then extends to the capillaries, giving tone to circulation without actually increasing pulsation. Capsicum ensures rapid and even distribution of active constituents of other herbs and nutrients to vital regions including those involved in metabolism, cellular respiration, data transmission and neural hormonal activation.

Capsicum has been found to effect the circulatory system, reducing the risks of heart disease. Scientific studies reveal that it decreases the likelihood of atherosclerosis by lowering blood

cholesterol and triglyceride levels.1 It acts as a catalyst in the blood purification process.2 It also

reduces platelet aggregation and has been experimentally proven to reduce stress in animals.7

According to statistical reports, cultures consuming large amounts of capsicum have a lower rate of cardiovascular disease.

Garlic

Garlic (Allium sativum) enjoys a valued place in history as both a food and medicine. The garlic bulb is composed of individual cloves enclosed in a white skin. It is the bulb, either fresh or dehydrated, that is used as a spice or medicine. Found in garlic is the compound alliin. When the clove is crushed, cut or bruised, alliin is converted to allicin by the enzyme alliinase. Allicin is attributed with much of garlic’s medicinal power.

Page 14: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

Scientific Information

Garlic can offer significant protection against heart disease and stroke. Studies have indicated that individuals supplementing with garlic showed a reduction in serum cholesterol of 10-12 percent. Also, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol decreased about 15 percent, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (good cholesterol) increased about 10 percent and triglyceride levels

dropped roughly 15 percent.6,7,8 Garlic has also demonstrated the ability to lower blood pressure

in both experimental animals and humans.9,10 In people with hypertension garlic can decrease

systolic pressure by 20-30 mmHg and diastolic pressure by 10-20 mmHg.”11

Platelet aggregation and fibrinogen (part of the blood clotting system) have been strongly linked to

cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke.12,13 Garlic has been shown in human studies to

increase serum fibrinolytic activity significantly.14,15

Hawthorn

Hawthorn (Cratageus oxyacantha or Cratageus monogyna) is a spiny shrub or small tree that is native to Mediterranean regions including North Africa, Europe and central Asia. Its Latin name is from kratos (hardness), oxus (sharp) and akantha (thorn). The tree grows up to 25 feet tall and usually lives to a very old age.

Traditional use of hawthorn dates back to the Greek and Roman eras. It was mentioned by Discorides, regarded as a symbol of hope and happiness. Greek bridesmaids made bouquets with its flowers and the Romans placed the leaves in baby cribs to ward off evil. Its popularity declined around the time of Christ when it was believed that the “crown of thorns” was made of hawthorn twigs and it was associated with death. It was not until the medieval times that its medicinal values were recognized by Bulgarian doctors. They used it to treat scores of coronary problems. Three quarters of the 62 patients the doctors treated with hawthorn berries fully recovered. In 16th-century France the personal physician of Henry IV used hawthorn berries to make an anti-aging syrup he called sirupus senelorum. In the 17th century, the English herbalist Nicholas Culpeper praised hawthorn as “a singular remedy for the [kidney] stone”, and for dropsy (congestive heart failure). Until recently Asian herbalists have traditionally used hawthorn only for weight loss and as a digestive aid; however, western cultures have influenced its present use for treating and preventing heart disease. Hawthorn berries were also used for centuries by Native Americans and American pioneers. It is still recommended by modern herbalists, especially for the treatment of mild heart problems for which cardiotonic glycosides such as digitalis are not yet necessary.

Scientific Information

The active constituents of hawthorn berries are oligomeric procyanidins (bioflavonoids), which are also responsible for their red colour. Consensus of controlled laboratory experiments and clinical observations in several countries determines four main functions of these constituents in the

circulatory system:16 1) They stimulate peripheral vasodilation, lowering blood pressure and stress on the heart by increasing blood flow to extremities. In 1939 Dr. James Graham of Glasgow University demonstrated the effectiveness of hawthorn berries in treating 10 patients confined to

beds with high blood pressure.17 2) After peripheral vasodilation there is a mild dilation of coronary vessels. 3) This is followed by increased enzyme metabolism in cardiac muscle contractions, most likely due to or consistent with this increase. 4) The final effect is increased oxygen utilization by the heart. However, in stressful conditions these constituents have the

Page 15: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

opposite effect, decreasing enzyme functions thus lowering oxygen and energy demands in a

conservative effort.16

Hawthorn berries are most often recommended by herbalists for heart problems associated with aging and degeneration such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, angina, dropsy and arrhythmia. They are also beneficial as a digestive/metabolic enhancer for those who have increased demands on the heart caused by being overweight. They decrease free fatty acids, serum

cholesterol and aid in the digestion of meats.16,18

Safety

Taken in high dosage, hawthorn berry extracts have a sedative effect. Such use is recommended only for those with chronic insomnia and must not exceed safe parameters for its cardiotonic

effects.19

Noni /Morinda Juice

Noni or Morinda Citrifolia is a fruit mainly found in Asia, the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean.

Throughout Polynesia, the Noni plant is traditionally used to treat almost any ailment including inflammation, skin problems, parasites, infections, wounds, bowel disturbances, and even ageing. The fruit has a rancid smell and taste but by combining it with other fruit juices is made palatable.

Dr Ralph Heinicke has researched the plant extensively. He has a PhD in Biochemistry and he discovered a substance called ‘Xeronine’ in 1953 that is present in the healthy cells of humans, animals and micro-organisms. Xeronine is like a “Master Enzyme” that activates other enzymes in the body. Enzymes are molecules (chemical compounds) that activate or participate in all chemical functions in the body. Just as sparks ignite fuel to create power, so enzymes ignite chemical processes in the body.

The Digestive SystemDigestion is particularly reliant on enzymes to break down all the food we consume into usable components. Enzymes break down protein into amino acids, which are the building blocks for the repair and regeneration of our body tissues.

Interestingly, Xeronine actually helps in the synthesis of protein i.e. the reassembling of the amino acids for the different structures of our bodies. Keep in mind that the first stage of the creation of energy, regeneration of body tissues AND the manufacture of our enzymes (which are protein or amino acids) is the Digestive System. The first stage of the Digestive System is the stomach which mainly breaks down protien. So if our stomach or other parts of our digestive system are not working optimally, every other function of the body can be affected or compromised.

Noni does not contain Xeronine! It actually contains 'Proxeronine', a precurser to Xeronine which, when it enters the acid environment of the stomach is converted by the body to Xeronine. That’s why we recommend it to be taken 30 mins before breakfast to obtain best results. Because of it's ability to activate many other enzyme functions, we have used it extensively to improve digestive function with very good results.

The Immune SystemXeronine also improves the function of the immune system. The immune system is compromised in most of us and the immune system can affect so many other functions of the body. In fact it is usually a factor in most of our common illnesses. So if you improve the immune system, you do the whole body a big favour in many ways.

Acid/Alkaline BalanceThe stomach, small intestine, large intestine, blood and urine all need the right acid/alkaline balance in order to function properly. Maintaining that balance is quite a juggling act for the body because each area needs a different pH. So it's very easily disturbed with dire consequences.

Page 17: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

I once attended a large conference where one of the speakers was a Naturopathic Medical Doctor. He said he had researched this topic for six years and could not find a reliable way to understand or influence this most complex mechanism in the body. Naturally I was disappointed because I too wanted to know this secret of the body. Fortunately we now have a way to improve the pH balance without cracking the code. You guessed it! Xeronine. I have some theories as to why this is so but I don’t need to bore you with all that. Suffice to say it works – most of the time.

We had one patient who was a natural hygienist. This is someone who’s super strict with their diet and lifestyle and the hardest of all patients to treat because there’s not much left to work with. He was having some problems with his spine but also asked if I could do something for his cracked skin on his heels. I tested everything and found nothing. In desperation (or was it inspiration?) I tested his blood pH and found it to be too alkaline. We prescribed the Noni and you can guess the rest. His cracked heels improved about 75%. We were both impressed! I know that it is just one case but we do have many others, and it does demonstrate the principle under discussion very well.

So whether you need help with your enzyme system, digestive system, immune system or your acid/alkaline balancing system, Noni could be just the natural medicine you are looking for.

DIGESTIVE FORMULA

A typical formula may contain the following individual components to support the digestive system, and provide aid in the relief of digestive discomforts of various types. The herbs act synergistically to provide both the necessary nutrients for the normal biological functions of the gastrointestinal tract as well as increasing the production of digestive fluids and enzymes.

The combination may be used to treat a range of digestive discomforts including indigestion, belching, abdominal discomfort, and nausea (when combined with ginger root), but finds a specific use in the relief of flatulence. It can be used in conjunction with Protein Digestive Aid especially where inadequate digestion is the cause of the symptoms.

Catnip is a native of Eurasia but is currently widely distributed throughout the Northern U.S. and Canada. The whole herb, leaves and flowering tops have been used medicinally (both by cats and humans). Although well known for its euphoric effects on cats, it has long been used in traditional folklore medicine. Catnip’s most common uses include the treatment of colds and throat problems, as a sedative tea, for the relief of flatulence and colic in infants, and as a digestive aid and tonic.

Many compounds have been isolated from Catnip (Nepeta cataria.) The volatile oils, which are found in the leaves, are many, but are mainly dominated by a compound known as nepetalactone. Nepetalactone is mildly sedative, antispasmodic, and mildly herbicidal in activity and appears to exert its effect on the central nervous system. Catnip’s relaxant and antispasmodic action is said to be due to the nepetalactone which has been found to have a chemical structure similar to valepotriates, the sedative compounds of valerian.

The use of Catnip as a digestive aid is well documented and is said to be due to several constituents of the herb increasing digestive fluids and tonifying the digestive organ. In addition, Catnip has a high number of minerals which includes chromium, cobalt, iron, manganese, potassium and selenium. All are essential to healthy metabolic function of the body including the digestive process.

Fennel, which is commonly found on road sides throughout the world, has been used for its medicinal action in traditional medicine for hundreds of years. Fennel has a long history of use as a digestive aid and finds favour in treatment of colic and flatulence especially in children. The herb has been found to relax most disturbances of intestinal function and is particularly useful when applied to an inadequate digestive tone.

Fennel is also high in several minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and selenium as well as fats, proteins and thiamine. The dried fruit and its oils function as a stimulant, aromatic, carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue and purgative with both the leaves and seeds stimulating digestion and appetite. The volatile oil is often added to formulas to help prevent griping. The pain of chronic colitis can also be relieved with Fennel.

In one particular study, symptoms were reduced in 96% of the patients using a herbal mixture in which Fennel was one of the herbs. In addition, defecation returned to normal in patients with both diarrhoea and constipation.

Because of its proven activity as an antispasmodic and relaxant, Fennel reinforces the validity of the formulation to treat flatulence and other problems of the digestive system. It is also shown to stimulate the digestive tract while quieting griping and relieving both diarrhoea and constipation.

Page 19: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

Wild Yam has been used for the treatment of bilious colic and various other gastrointestinal upsets for centuries and appears to have an affinity with the lower bowel. In large doses the root can act as a diuretic, expectorant and an emetic. If used in moderate dosages the herb becomes a useful antispasmodic. The efficacy of the herb in the treatment of colic may be attributed to this factor. It is also well known that Wild Yam is useful for treating a variety of female complaints including ovarian and uterine pain, dysmenorrhoea and more recently female problems associated to menopause.

Wild Yam is high in carbohydrates as well as being high in cobalt, zinc and manganese. Cobalt is an integral part of vitamin B12 and is therefore very necessary, especially in a strict vegetarian diet. Zinc is also an important mineral as it acts as a component of enzymes which have their role in many metabolic processes. Manganese is also an essential element because of its enzyme activating activity in the human body.

Wild Yam is often included in digestive preparations because, like Catnip and Fennel, Wild Yam has been shown to have antispasmodic action on the gastrointestinal tract. Together with this, steroidal type compounds found in the herb appear to exert an anti-inflammatory action on the intestinal mucosa. It is also known to reduce diarrhoea and have antifungal activity.

Ginger has been cultivated for centuries with both the dry and the fresh rhizome used for medicinal purposes. The action of the herb are carminative, stimulant to the gastrointestinal tract and stomach, a sialagogue (stimulant for saliva) and digestive aid. It is used for the treatment of many stomach ailments including the stimulation of the appetite. It has an ability to stop griping and cramping especially in the abdominal, intestinal and uterine areas. Ginger is also known for its diaphoretic properties therefore having benefit when treating fever. Several components of Ginger give rise to its use to increase digestive juices.

Chemically, Ginger is high in protease enzymes and can be used in a similar way to papain. In addition, Ginger has powerful activity when used for the treatment of motion sickness or morning sickness. The herb is well known for its ability to help prevent vomiting. The use of the herb as a digestive aid is well founded as it has been shown to enhance and increase bile secretions and enhance gastrointestinal tract mobility. In addition it has been found to have an anti-inflammatory action and aid in the healing of stomach ulceration.

Papaya’s value is primarily for the proteolytic enzymes, papain and chymopapain which are isolated from the latex and found in all parts of the plant, including the green fruit. Chymopapain is most abundant but papain is twice as active. It is said to digest 36 times its weight in lean meat.

Primarily used as a digestive aid and for the management of childhood diarrhoea, papain has also found its way into some proprietary nasal sprays to give relief to allergy sufferers. Recently, numerous studies have been using papain and its enzyme extracts during and after surgery. Researchers found a reduction in oedema after some surgery procedures and that the extracts promoted healing of wounds faster than those who were not being supplemented. Other observations concluded that papain had the ability to digest tissue while leaving live tissue untouched.

Papain appears to have numerous uses. For example, powdered papain can be used to treat skin conditions such as warts. More recently it has been shown that papain liberates histamine from tissues as well as exerting a mild antibacterial activity. The seeds also contain an active constituent known as carcin which acts as an anthelmintic. Given with honey it is said to expel worms. Used

Page 20: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

topically, it is said the juice can be used for the treatment of ringworms. The antibacterial activity of the plant may also serve a positive purpose for some individuals.

Peppermint, along with other mints, have been used for medicinal purposes throughout time. The herb is said to have many uses including the treatment of gallstones and irritable bowel syndrome. Traditionally, it was used to treat indigestion and intestinal colic and often referred to as the classic “tummy tea”. It is of course used widely as a flavouring.

Peppermint, and its primary component, menthol, function as a carminative and antispasmodic with choleretic properties. The choleretic properties of peppermint are well documented and have been shown to increase the solubility of the bile secretions hence its benefit in the management of gallstones. The carminative property of peppermint is believed to be due to the oil which appears to relax the oesophageal sphincter allowing gas to be released from the stomach. A mixture of menthol and related terpenes is also said to aid in the dissolving of gallstones over time (about four years).

Together with these actions, peppermint has been shown to inhibit calcium influx in the muscle cells, thus decreasing the isolated smooth muscle contractions. This provides useful support in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome by allowing the muscles to relax and gain its muscle tone.

The action of Spearmint is similar to that of peppermint. Though milder than peppermint, the gentle action of spearmint makes it useful in children preparations. Often peppermint and spearmint are used interchangeably because of the similarities in their action, but there are differences. Spearmint does not contain menthol. The primary compound found in spearmint is the volatile oils I-carvone. Spearmint also acts as a carminative, stimulant and antispasmodic but only mildly to that of peppermint. It has also been found to be useful in the treatment of nausea, especially when associated with headaches and nervous stomach.

COLLOIDAL MINERALS

Minerals function in many ways in the body. Imagine the huge number of cells in the body and then image each cell as a minute chemical factor producing proteins, enzymes, and many other needed compounds for energy and new cell development. Imagine enzymes as the main factory workers and minerals as the enzymes tools (called cofactors or co-enzymes). Just as a surgeon has no use for a hammer, or an electrician does not need a chain-saw, each enzyme needs the proper minerals. Then imagine that this is just one function of a mineral. Minerals are needed to create the proper oxidation state so that our body can use and store oxygen. The list below shows the huge necessity of minerals in the body. (From The Concise Encyclopedia of Food and Nutrition, Ensminger, 1995.)

1. Give rigidity and strength to the skeletal structure.

2. Serve as constituents of the organic compounds, such as protein and lipid, which make up the muscles, organs, blood cells and other soft tissues of the body.

3. Activate enzymes systems.

4. Control fluid balance - osmotic pressure and excretion.

5. Regulate acid-base balance.

6. Exert characteristic effects on the irritability of muscles and nerves.

7. Act together with hormones, vitamins, and other metabolic regulators.

It is well known that minerals are essential to life. There is a great deal of research being done on which minerals are essential and at what levels. It is interesting to note that many trace minerals are being found to be essential. There is currently a debate on whether arsenic is essential (at low levels, of course). Vanadium is believed to be essential and play a key role in insulin use. A very important issue that has come from this research is that minerals are interactive. An excess of one can lead to a deficiency of another or several others. A deficiency of one can cause the body to alter its absorption or excretion processes and cause a change in the levels of other minerals. From this we learn that all the essential minerals are critical and need to be in proper proportion to each other.

There are many factors that influence the amount of minerals we consume in our diet. Foremost is the diet itself; whether it contains a variety of healthful foods. The source of these food products makes a difference. Agricultural practices have changed the mineral content of many foods. For example, overusing a soil or fertilizer creates an imbalance of minerals in plants and soils, feeding a limited diet to animals, or overgrazing an area leads to consumption of plants the animal might not choose otherwise. The manufacturing of foods often leads to mineral deficiencies. The minerals may stay behind in cooking water or in the bran or polishings of a grain. Some diseases, metabolic conditions, medicines, medical procedures and even routinely taken herbs or OTC medicines can alter the absorption of minerals or change the elimination process. Keeping all these things in mind, most of us have the potential for mineral imbalance.

There are many claims about bioavaiability of different mineral supplements. The tablet form minerals have the advantage of being predictable and balanced based on current science. Often chelated forms of minerals are used. These are organically bound minerals which may more easily move into the cells. Colloidal suspensions are not well studied yet but are believed to be very small

Page 22: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

particles of the various minerals in the rock material from which the suspension is extracted. They are suspended because of size and, perhaps, ionic charge and/or organic material. In theory, these very small particles are easily absorbed by the body, some believe because they are chelated in the intestines by enzymes using available food materials. The small size allows them to stay suspended in liquid and, therefore, be more obtainable by the body. These have the advantage of possessing a wider variety of minerals and may offer those minerals not yet determined to be essential.

Supergreens

Nature’s Wonder Superfood

What are Supergreens?Put simply – it is a natural substance, organically grown that contains all the nutrients our foods should contain but generally don’t. It contains everything you need to achieve and maintain a healthy body with abundant energy and vitality.

Why do we need Supergreens? Many scientists now state that our soils are nutrient deficient. That means if it’s not in the soil – it’s not in the plant or the animal and thereby not available to our bodies. Add to this the fact that our foods are often grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, then preserved, transported and stored before we get them. Then we cook them which effects their value even further. No wonder our diets are nutritionally deficient and our general health statistics are dreadful. Supergreens bypass all of those negative steps. You get a pure unadulterated food.

An Energy Efficient FoodMany foods require a lot of energy to breakdown, digest and assimilate particularly flesh and dairy foods. Supergreens require very little digestive action and is absorbed quite quickly into the system. Most foods leave a residue that has to be eliminated by the bowel. Again, flesh and dairy are the top of the list. These foods place quite a strain on the eliminative system whereas Supergreens do not. In fact, it improves the function of both the eliminative and digestive systems. Many people report an improvement in these systems when taking green food.

What Does it Contain?A typical formula of Supergreens could contain; Barley grass, Wheat grass, Alfalfa, Spirulina and Kelp. Much has been written about each of these individually so I would refer you to study those sources if you want more information. A brief summary will be given here. A writer will extol the virtue of each substance and they all have a particular strength or quality that they possess. They also can also produce a similar effect in the body. By combining them into a formula you get a complete spectrum of nutrients with a multiple effect or benefit to the body.

Enzymes! Enzymes! The most significant feature of green powder is its enzyme content. Enzymes are what make your body functions work. They activate biochemical functions. You may have a prestige car with a powerful engine, high-grade fuel, good quality oil, water in the radiator, air in the tyres etc. But – if there is no spark to ignite the fuel, nothing happens. Just one little spark to activate that wonderful machine.

ENZYMES ARE TO YOUR BODY WHAT THE SPARKS ARE TO YOUR CARNo spark – no function, no power, no nothing. No enzymes – ditto

ONE OF THE MOST COMMON DEFICIENCIES IN OUR DIETS TODAY IS – ENZYMES

Page 24: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

Your foods may not contain them, and even if they do, cooking destroys them particularly at high temperatures. What about Vitamins, Minerals and Amino Acids?Yes they are all important too, but are easier to get than enzymes. BUT GUESS WHAT! Green powders contain a vast array of all the above as well as enzymes.

Life force and EMR (Electromagnetic Radiation)All living things have an energy field or life force. This has now been demonstrated using Kirliam Photography which shows this energy field around living substances. A cooked meal usually demonstrates no life force. Recent research also suggests the negatively charged Hydrogen Ion as the source of this energy.

Green powders if organically grown and correctly processed have this life force in abundance. EMR is an energy field or force that negatively affects our body’s energy field. Your energy field will affect the regular functions of your body particularly brain function and structural strength of joints. We have found it clinically to effect ADD, ADHD, memory and brain function in general. We have also found that spinal problems that are difficult to resolve may be due to the weakening effect on the joints of EMR. Muscle testing demonstrates the neutralizing or therapeutic effect of Supergreens on EMR. EMR has also been linked to cancer and other diseases. As you are probably aware, there is considerable discussion occurring on the subject of cellular phones and their effect on health including headaches.

The most common sources of EMR are Digital Clocks, 4 & 5 way adaptors, microwaves, TV and computer screens, fuse boxes, mobile phones, overhead power lines etc. There is a machine called an E meter which actually measures the presence and level of EMR. Muscle testing is also a reliable source of testing. Some people are more sensitive to EMR than others.Solution – Obviously avoiding the sources of EMR is advisable but you can’t avoid it completely. Taking Supergreen regularly will neutralize the damaging effects of EMR.

Weight Management We all know about calories. What you may not know is that fat in your body is simply stored calories or energy in reserve. So shortage of calories or stored energy is not the problem. So what is? ENZYMES – not again! Yes enzymes are the spark or the ingredient that will get your body to ignite or burn the stored calories. Supergreens are high in enzymes and other nutrients needed to complete the biochemical cycle to turn your fat into available energy. AND IT CONTAINS VERY FEW CALORIES. Almost too good to be true! Or too good to miss. Literally a WONDER FOOD. For you skinnies out there, don’t worry. You won’t lose more weight. In fact it will help you to build lean muscle mass. So it’s an ideal food for the athlete and body builder, particularly before strenuous exercise.

Complete FoodRejuvenates the Cells of the BodyBalances MetabolismHelps prevent or treat CancerChlorophyllChlorophyll is the green blood of plants. It’s where all the nutrients of the plant are. Chlorophyll is very similar to human blood in its chemical content. What makes a plant green is its chlorophyll content. Using green powder ensures you are getting all the nutrients of the plant without the plant. Wheat grass, Barley grass and the legume Alfalfa are the three of the most powerful foods in the plant kingdom.

What about Wheat Allergies?Wheat grass is not the same as “wheat” which is from the seed. In fact wheat grass sometimes acts as an antidote for wheat allergies. Also mixing one substance with another (or others) can greatly reduce or even eliminate the body’s reaction to it.

How should I take it?Everyone is different so experiment. Usually 1 or 2 TSP – 2 times daily will give a good result taken in vegie (or fruit) juice or in water is usually the easiest. Some don’t like the taste, some do, some don’t mind. Either way take it. You won’t regret it.

If I could take only one supplement or give one only to my family or patients it would be NATURE’S SUPERGREENS. That’s how highly I value it!

MSM

STIFF ACHING JOINTS AND MUSCLES?MSM May Be The Answer To Regenerating

Your Joints And Connective Tissues

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a natural form of sulphur occurring in nature, often found deficient in our bodies because it is not stored but used quickly. It has a beneficial effect in many ways but is particularly needed by the connective tissues of our bodies. Connective tissue is the means by which we are held together and should be elastic or stretchable. Connective tissue is found everywhere in our bodies particularly in our skin, muscles, ligaments, joints, blood vessels, organs etc.We mainly use MSM in our clinic in treating stiffness of the joints and muscles and found it gives exceptional results when all else fails. It is particularly helpful for arthritis. We have also noticed beneficial results with lung and bowel problems as a result of taking the MSM for other reasons; although we don’t prescribe it specifically for these conditions.

Following is some information we have obtained from other sources. We can’t validate the claims so you can draw your own conclusions and do more research yourself. You can find plenty of information on the Internet.

However – simply put in my experience it is one of the most powerful natural substances for rejuvenating the structural systems of the body especially the joints. You may find it in a formula combined with Glucosamine or Chondrotin but it’s not in a sufficient quantity to exert its full beneficial effect.

What we have found in our clinic is that gelatin (beef or chicken cartlidge) works best for supporting cartlidge function in joints, and MSM for regenerating connective tissue – ligaments and tendons of joints. There is some overlap in their benefit but they each have their major effect on a specific part if the body.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are constituents of cartlidge so you may get a similar response by taking gelatin which is cheaper.

In our arthritis programme we recommend patients take both MSM and gelatin (or glucosamine and chondrotin) together. We also recommend taking Vitamin C with MSM in fruit juice (other than orange juice) to potentiate (improve) its effect.

It was called MSM by its discoverer Robert Herschler of Camas. Wash., who also has registered the acronym as a trademark. The nutrient, looks and feels like cane sugar and is nearly tasteless.

His research showed him, he said, “That methylsulfonylmethane was the prime source of bio-available sulphur, but that because of its fragility, most animals and humans are sulphur-deficient.” A source of bio-available sulphur is required to produce the amino acids, methionine, and cystine, two very important amino acids for the body.

Page 27: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

“MSM” he explained, “Is shy, evasive, and escape-prone. While not a problem within the marine life food chain, there is a problem in the terrestrial environment. While present naturally when food is very fresh, it can be driven out of any food by even moderate processing, including the cutting and drying of hay. People, generally speaking, will be sulphur-deficient unless they eat their fish and meat raw and their vegetables unwashed and uncooked.”

The richest source of MSM, it was discovered in the research, was mother’s milk, and thus, babies are not as likely to suffer from sulphur deficiency. “The list of sulphur uses in the body of the horse is long and includes hair, hide and hooves, connective tissue and enzyme, hormones, and immunoglobulins.” Herschler said.

There are other beneficial effects that seem to transcend this basic explanation. For example, early in his work with MSM Herschler began ingesting it himself. He found that when taking MSM he was not bothered by three types of allergies that normally were so severe at specific times of the year that he had to take antihistamines to combat them. That experience led him to do research with laboratory animals, and he discovered that MSM, in layman’s terms, had a coating action on the entire GI tract (from mouth through to the small intestine), making it impossible for the allergens to bind and cause their damage.

“It isn’t the answer for all allergies.” Herschler is quick to say. “It doesn’t work on everybody. Nobody has the answer for all allergies, but it certainly worked on mine.”

He also discovered in laboratory experiments that MSM could neutralize allergic responses brought about in many instances by the administration of a variety of non-steroidal drugs, such as antibiotics.

The next revealing experience in this continuing chain of events involved a friend who lived near his favorite trout-fishing stream and who suffered from emphysema. Her emphysema was so severe she could hardly walk from one side of the room to another in her small riverside home without extreme difficulty in breathing. Herschler got her started taking MSM on a regular basis.

He described the effect of the nutrient on her:“In two or three weeks, she changed from a woman who couldn’t walk across the living room to the back door without running out of breath, to a woman who not only could do that, but could walk out into the yard and if she took it easy, was very comfortable. I recorded her progress, and she got to the point where she could walk a third of a mile to the mailbox and, if she rested after she got there, could walk back again.”

Shortly after Herschler began providing the lady suffering from emphysema with MSM, another incident occurred that opened still another door for the utilization of the nutrient. The lady’s husband suffered from arthritis and had been getting relief with topical applications of DMSO. One day his condition worsened when he fell off the roof of the house while making repairs.

He did not suffer any broken bones, but, Herschler said, “His arthritic joints were severely traumatized.”

Page 28: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

Herschler suggested he forego the DMSO for a time and try MSM. The man took a teaspoon of MSM three times a day and very shortly reported relief from arthritic pain.

Dr. John Metcalf a veterinarian in Auburn Wash. says, “We had an old dog that was arthritic. We had her on four Bute tablets a day, and we still had to help her on her feet. We put her on MSM and removed the Bute. After a short while on MSM, nobody had to help her to her feet. We got another two years out of that old girl.”

I’m told the reason dogs and cats will be very selective when eating grass is they instinctively know which ones are high in MSM. This is particularly true when they are sick.

Further research by Herschler has also convinced him that, because of its anti-microbial effect, “MSM at very high levels has a very interesting future with a lot of infective diseases.”

It is totally safe for whatever use is desired of it, he said, because “It’s in the same toxicity range as water or glycerine.”

MSM is not a medicine, drug or a food additive. It is a nutritional food supplement found in all foods – milk, fruits, meats and vegetables. MSM is a natural form of organic sulphur found in all living organisms. MSM is the 3rd largest ingredient found in the body. Your body is made up of water, salt and MSM.

Why do we need MSM?The body uses MSM to create new, good healthy cells. Vitamins and amino acids work with MSM during this process. Without proper levels of MSM, our bodies are unable to build good healthy cells, and this leads to illness. Our bodies are producing new cells 24 hours per day. If your body doesn’t receive the proper nutrition and building materials it needs, it will produce bad, dysfunctional cells, deficient of the basic ingredients that constitute a healthy cell. If we want a good flexible cell, capable of maintaining good health, we need to supplement our diets with MSM, to enable the body to heal itself. Your body knows what it needs so it can provide more nutrition and heal itself.

If MSM is found in all foods, why do we need to supplement with MSM?Because of its volatile nature, MSM is quickly lost from food when it is processed, cooked and/or stored. The second a fruit or vegetable is picked from the tree or vine, it begins rapidly losing the MSM. Even in meats, MSM is not as abundant as it used to be. Today, animals are being fed with dried, stored grasses, hay and grains, deficient in MSM. When your body uses the MSM molecule to produce a new cell, the MSM is lost forever. We need to continuously replace the bodies needed supply of MSM to produce new, good healthy cells. A conventional diet does not supply the minimum requirement of MSM. It is absent in synthetic food additives, dietary mineral compositions, food substitutes and most fillers used to dilute or modify foods. With today’s modern diet of cooked and otherwise processed and diluted foods, most – if not all – diets of civilized man are deficient in this critically important ingredient.

How safe is MSM?

Page 29: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

MSM is as safe as drinking pure water. Because of its inert nature, MSM is non-allergenic, non-pyretic, and has no interfering or undesirable pharmacological effects. It can even be used as a safe blood diluent. You cannot overdose with MSM. The body will use what it needs, and after 12 hours, will flush any excess amounts out of the body. MSM will flush what the body does not retain semi-permanently every 12 hours, and because it is a free radical and foreign protein scavenger, MSM cleans the blood stream, so allergies to food and pollens go away in about 3 or 4 days. To maintain good healthy cells, take MSM in the morning and the evening.

Note:- In rare cases we have found people who are sensitive to sulphur or sulphur drugs may react to MSM. There always seems to be exceptions to the rule. Initially we recommend taking 1tsp of MSM with ¼ tsp of vitamin C powder once daily mixed in apple or lemon juice to maximise its effect. It can then be increased after two weeks to twice daily for one month then back to once daily.

If you suspect you may be sensitive to sulphur (or just plain sensitive) start with the half dosage.

VITAMIN C MYTHS!

It’s the Wonderfood for the Human Race

Myth 1. Ascorbic Acid is a synthetic Vitamin.

Myth 2. Ascorbic Acid interferes with the body’s ability to absorb Vitamin C from fruit and vegetables and in some way will damage the Immune System by this mechanism.

Myth 3. Ascorbic Acid causes Cardio Vascular Disease & Kidney Stones.

Because humans cannot synthesize Vitamin C in their liver, like most animals, they are dependent on exogenous sources (outside of the body) in the diet. If people took all of their food from garden to meal plate, didn’t lead stressful lives and lived in a pristine environment with clean air and water, then they could expect to get enough Vitamin C to support immunity, strength, tissue repair, cellular detoxification, reduced oxidation and aging. True Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, whereas metallo Vitamin C Molecules like Calcium Ascorbate are not what you will find in your vitamin rich Vitamin C foods like freshly picked Citrus, Parsley etc.

Myth 1. Ascorbic Acid is a Synthetic Vitamin

Vitamin C occurs in Nature with a number of molecules called Bioflovanoids. Hesperidin from fresh citrus is a dominant flavanoid that has been shown to increase the efficacy of Ascorbic Acid 8-10 fold. Hesperidin is commercially derived from citrus, however it’s difficult to commercially derive a stable Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) economically from plant sources, so we bio-synthesize from glucose (usually derived from corn starch). The laboratory process is nature identical, the shift of a hydrogen atom of glucose makes Vitamin C the same, as animals will bio-synthesize this on demand in their liver. The word synthetic Ascorbic Acid does not fit as we usually view a synthetic substance as a chemical from coaltar (petroleum) or a true synthetic like polyester.

Hard working people in our modern world need loads of Vitamin C & Bioflavanoids like Hersperidin. Vitamin C is necessary for maintaining healthy adrenal function to overcome fatigue from exertion and stress responses. We rarely see scurvy in modern society, but most people who don’t supplement daily have sub-clinical deficiencies of Vitamin C eg. we see backache as common place and it is often a symptom of adrenal fatigue due to the sub-clinical nutrition deficiencies such as Vitamin C and Hesperidin. Today modern man has a serious problem with exposure to industrial chemicals including heavy metals like lead, cadmium and mercury. These contaminants can cause genetic damage and accelerate aging and can also cause a myriad of chronic diseases including neuronal damage, literally destroying quality of life. Ascorbic Acid and Hesperidin have been widely accepted as binders and detoxifiers of the various metals and contaminants. Mineral Ascorbates whilst very beneficial as Vitamin C supplements, cannot perform this task adequately as they are already bound to a buffering agent which neutralises the acid.

Vitamin C and Hesperidin play a significant role in the biosynthesis of endogenous collagen’s (the body ‘s cellular cement that holds us together) including maintaining the integrity of this cement in our arteries and small vessels, thus reducing the potential of fragility and breakage, hemorrhage and profusion. Vitamin C and Heperidin helps to prevent permeability of our circulator system, hence lowering the risk of high blood pressure and strokes, also reducing oxidation of cholesterol and the build up of plaque. You may have seen the Anti Smoking advertisements showing the clogged arteries in smokers eg. smoking destroys Vitamin C so you get more oxidation of fats that clog arteries.

The groups over many years who have postered negative propaganda regarding side effects of supplemental Vitamin C have always lost out as it is still the number one Vitamin in the entire world and will probably always remain so, as we all need it and our recommended daily requirements from our respective government authorities fall well behind what many leading nutritionists believe is good for you to meet your individual needs, lifestyle stresses and contamination exposure. The idea that our Vitamin C should be derived from fruits and vegetables, versus bio-synthesized Vitamin C means sacrificing too much of our fresh food supply to meet the world demand for plant derived Vitamin C and puts it outside the affordability of most of the population. To get the measurable doses we need daily, I am comfortable recommending 1-2 grams of Vitamin C twice/day to most adults and a portion of this for children, depending on age and size. The only side effect I’ve ever seen in 25 years of clinical practice is a loose bowel motion from doses in excess of 2-4 grams/day and these extra doses are often the best way to cleanse the colon for a day or two and arrest a failing immune system and preventing Flu from early onset. The common experience is that when Vitamin C is reduced, bowels normally firm up within 24 hours.

Myth 2. Ascorbic Acid interferes with the body’s ability to absorb Vitamin C from fruit and vegetables and in some way will damage the Immune System by this mechanism.

The myth that bio-synthesized Vitamin C can damage you immune system can only be deduced from the following phenomena which proves it is actually good for you, not bad. If you take a good dose of Vitamin C daily you will drive your immune system to work harder, however if you suddenly stop you may get a rebound deficiency quicker than if you tried to rely on diet alone so your immune system may stall for a few days, making you slightly and temporarily more susceptible to infection. Nutrients are essential to maintain optimum health, no oxygen means death in minutes, no water or potassium, death usually within days. Deficiency of Vitamin C means breaking down of all systems of the body and faster aging.

Myth 3. Ascorbic Acid causes Cardio Vascular Disease and Kidney Stones.

“Vitamin C is a major cause of kidney stones”, how can this be true! Ascorbic Acid reduces the build up of cholic acid in the system often attributed to kidney stones. Low calcium and Vitamin C intakes are higher risks for kidney stones, as bone Calcium is often precipitated out of the system via the kidneys. Those using Vitamin C supplementation generally maintain stronger and higher integrity of their kidney tubules.

“Vitamin C causes thickening of the arteries in cardiovascular risk patients”. This may be true, but not a bad thing as these patients often have an age related thinning of their artery walls which also

Page 32: Health Empowerment Introductionempoweryou.com.au/HEP/HEP.pdf · dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion and gallstones. Irish Moss Herb contains mucilaginous compounds that enhance

may become engorged with plaque. Vitamin C helps to restore tone and flexibility of arteries and thus reduces thinning of arteries. Plaque on arteries is not what usually causes stroke. Plaque is more often a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites which can create plaque related clots that are more likely to break away and block an artery or vessel causing a stroke. Vitamin C helps the Immune System fight bacteria and pathogens, reducing the risk of stroke.

A Doctor would be found negligent if you had scurvy and he didn’t recommend a diet rich in Vitamin C. But many physicians miss the sub-clinical deficiencies in our stressed population battling the host of modern industrialised toxins, on a diet of stored and prepared foods with insufficient Vitamin C to maintain optimal health. Remember not all Vitamin C supplements are active. A powder of Vitamin C with Hesperidin and Minerals like calcium, magnesium and zinc (the minerals assist as an unbound acid buffer) makes this type of combination the best value, giving good efficacy and results. Chewable Ascorbic Acid tablets can injure teeth and capsules are beneficial but much more expensive.

There have been epidermiological studies conducted en masse that give testament to the benefits of supplementation of Vitamin C. China is now one of the world’s largest producers of Ascorbic Acid and Hesperidin and the Chinese people are considerably the largest group of consumers. This hasn’t come about because a large company wanted to create Vitamin C sales. This has come mostly from the knowledge and experience of the government and the consumers in this country, trying to maintain health in the face of heavy pollution and rising stress levels compared to the west. The Chinese people maintain a closer affinity with traditional herbal medicines and are able to sustain lower overall medical costs per capita, due to a greater awareness amongst its people of preventing diseases with acupuncture, herbs, vitamins and minerals. Our need for Vitamin C, Hesperidin and Minerals increases as we age, the skin ages as it loses flexibility, due to cross linking of elastin from free radical damage and loss of collagen production from vitamin C, flavanoid, minerals and protein deficiencies. We should not be concerned with taking too much Vitamin C (it is water soluble and readily excreted with no residue) but taking too little. Taking supplements of Vitamin C with Hesperidin & Minerals in water or juice consumed a few times daily is a tasty way to enjoy health and prevent illness and premature aging.

Your Next Step

Once you have completed month 5, you have a number of options:

OPTION 1: Repeat the whole programme again

OPTION 2: Stay on those products you felt you gained the greatest benefit from

OPTION 3: Complete the HEALTH LIFESTYLE ANALYSIS (next page) to determine which specific body system needs attention and therefore which specific products you can use. If there is more than one system indicated, then address one per month.

After option 3 is complete, you can repeat the whole process again i.e. option 1 or do option 2 instead.

It is recommended that the 5 month programme be done at least once per year.

If your score is 50% or more in any column of the boxes ticked then that system needs attention, i.e. 8 out of 16 of the boxes in the glandular system requires attention, 4 out of 7 in the structural system requires attention.

The greater the percentage of boxes ticked compared from one column to another indicates which system requires the greatest attention, i.e. 8 out of 11 in the nervous system requires the greatest or soonest attention as it is the greater percentage.
