Health Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools – January 2008

INTRODUCTION The Health Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools identifies the concepts, processes, and skills for health education in kindergarten through grade ten. This framework provides school divisions and teachers with a guide for creating aligned curricula and learning experiences in health education. The intent of health education is to help students understand how to achieve and maintain good health for a lifetime. The three learning goals focus on key health concepts and skills needed to facilitate the formation of healthy behaviors and practices. The health education standards are grouped into three strands: Knowledge and Skills, Information Access and Use, and Community Health and Wellness. The standards in each strand are sequenced to progress in complexity from grade level to grade level. The standards are intended to provide students with the necessary knowledge, processes, and skills to make healthy choices and avoid health-risk behaviors (e.g., tobacco use, dietary patterns that contribute to disease, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol and other drug use, behaviors that result in intentional and unintentional injuries) identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Each school division’s school board is responsible for incorporating the Virginia Standards of Learning into its curriculum. The Board of Education recognizes that school divisions will adopt an instructional sequence that best serves their own students. Goals and Descriptions The purpose of health education is to help students acquire an understanding of health concepts and the skills needed to apply them in making healthy decisions to improve, sustain, and promote personal, family, and community health. As a result of health education instruction, the student will be able to do the following:

1. Act with skill and reason to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and behaviors that reduce health risks and enhance the health of self and others. (Knowledge and Skills)

The intent of this goal is for students to become health-literate, self-directed learners who skillfully apply health-promotion and disease-prevention strategies to establish a foundation for leading healthy and productive lives. This includes the development of the capacity to acquire, interpret, and understand health concepts, and the development of a range of health skills. Through blending an understanding of health concepts with use of various health skills, students will recognize the

relationship between personal behavior and personal health. By the end of their school health education experiences, students will have an understanding of health

concepts related to health promotion and risk/disease prevention, and they will have the ability to use health knowledge and skills effectively to lead healthy lives.

2. Demonstrate the ability to access, evaluate, and use health information, products, and services

that influence health and wellness in a positive manner. (Information Access and Use)

The intent of this goal is for students to demonstrate their ability to identify valid and accurate health information, products, and services. The ability to access valid health information and health promoting products and services is important in the

Page 5: Health Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public ... · Health Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools – January 2008 INTRODUCTION The Health Education

prevention, early detection, and treatment of most health problems. Students will

experience many opportunities across their school years to use information-analysis skills as they compare, contrast, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate materials, products, and services related to a variety of health issues. As they become informed

consumers, students will analyze the influence of culture, media, technology, and other factors on health. Upon the completion of the health education program, students will have the ability to influence their health and wellness in a positive manner by applying the skills of information access and evaluation and by accepting responsibility for personal health decisions and practices.

LCPS Elementary Health Curriculum Framework

This guide is intended to serve as an outline for health standards that are included in elementary grades.

Health instruction should be delivered by the elementary classroom teacher and may be integrated with

lessons in other subject areas or taught in isolation, when appropriate. Many integrated lessons are

included in this resource and each grade level has a health framework document. Elementary guides

consist of an introduction to the standards, the Virginia Department of Education goals for the standards

in each grade level, followed by curriculum resources that include the following areas:

the stated standard

understanding the standard

essential knowledge and skills

The student will:

evaluate the nutritional content of their lunch using the food guide pyramid.

list and explain the benefits of several vitamins and minerals.

identify why we need proteins in our diet.

describe why drinking plenty of water is so important.

plan a meal that is high in calcium and iron.

Standard of Learning

3.1 The student will explain that health habits impact personal growth and development. Key concepts/skills

include:

b. the benefits of physical activity and personal fitness;

Page 13: Health Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public ... · Health Education Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools – January 2008 INTRODUCTION The Health Education

Understanding the Standard

The student will discuss the health benefits of regular physical activity and personal fitness.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

The student will:

define personal fitness. (having your body in top condition)

describe the benefits of personal fitness:

o to have good physical health; o to get good grades in school; and o to have fun and play for long periods of time with your friends.

compare how different exercises help different muscles:

o aerobic exercises are exercises that use a lot of oxygen and raise your heart beat,

which makes your heart muscle strong; (swimming, running, jumping rope, etc.) o some exercises develop muscle strength to lift, pull, push, kick, and throw; (climbing a

rope, pull-ups, push-ups, curl-ups, bicycling, etc.) o some exercises give your muscles endurance so that you can use your muscles for a

long time; (walk, run, skate, etc., for a long distance) and

o some exercises make you flexible so you can bend and move easily. (joint flexibility is developed by stretching different muscle groups)

describe a personal fitness plan: o work on heart fitness three to five days a week for at least 30 minutes;

o work on muscle strength and endurance two to four times a week; and o work on flexibility every time you exercise.

Fire and Fire Prevention

Grades 2-3 A thematic unit on fire and fire prevention is essential for students of all age levels. However, knowledge of this topic becomes particularly important for young children, who are vulnerable when a

fire occurs due to their inexperience and lack of knowledge about the potential dangers of fire. Children in the second or third grades often use appliances, and they may be placed in situations where fires can easily occur. Teaching children about the dangers of fire and informing them about how to become active in preventing fires may actually prove life-saving should they ever be involved in a serious fire. http://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Health/Safety/SFY0012.html Sponsor: The Educator’s Reference Desk Free

Students discuss how common household products and even medicines can make people sick

when not correctly used. They then work in small groups to list potentially poisonous products found in an assigned room of the house (i.e., kitchen, bath, garage...)

Students learn about the importance of wearing a helmet properly through a demonstration, an object lesson (using an egg), and use of a student handout.

Students then design posters that advocate the proper use of helmet to protect against head injury.

Students identify different types of weapons, discuss ways to stay safe, and practice role plays

that show how to stay safe in the presence of a weapon.

Students write creative stories in groups about safe and unsafe behaviors, using the knowledge from previous lessons.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

The student will:

define body systems. (a group of organs that work together to do a job – your respiratory system takes in oxygen to keep your cells alive; your circulatory system moves oxygen and

nutrients to different parts of your body, etc)

identify how tobacco, marijuana, and inhalants affect the body systems. (affects all systems – has a significant effect on the respiratory, circulatory, nervous, and muscular systems)

describe how alcohol and other depressants affect the integrated functioning of body systems.

(enters the digestive system, moves into the circulatory system, and is taken to the brain where it depresses brain function – this affects the nervous, muscular, and the rest of the body systems)

identify how stimulants affect the integrated functioning of body systems. (speeds up all body

systems, especially the nervous system, to the point that the body systems are unable to function together properly)

Remind students that emergency numbers should be placed near the telephone.

Have the students break into groups and pretend to be the person reporting the emergency,

the injured person, the operator receiving the call, or the onlookers.

NOTE: A 911 operator (or police, ambulance, fire station operator) would best be able to explain to students the importance of calling only in an emergency and how to do a good job reporting. This person could give a presentation. Then the students could role-play and he/she

could give reinforcement.

Use computer or phone book to locate local numbers.

Locate websites for various health agencies; get contact information and write up.

You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover The objective of this activity is to have students learn that how something is packaged is not necessarily the way it really is. It is very important for children of this age to know whom to trust and how to receive the real, accurate message regarding something they are going to do, buy, or support. Learning to question the truth of messages sent to children this age can often be a first step to

understanding that questioning first is better than wishing you had questioned after action was taken. Sponsor: American Council for Drug Education Contact: http://www.acde.org/educate/k3plan1.htm Free
