On the flip side, Nursing and residential care facilities and Social assistance have an average annual wage of just $28,538 and $22,078, respectively. In 2017, there were 10,428 Health Care and Social Assistance locations across Iowa. Ambulatory health care services represented the majority of establishments with 5,452 locations, or 52.3 percent. Hospitals had the fewest number of establishments in this sector at 265 (an increase from 248 in 2016), but had the greatest amount of employment with 70,357 workers.
