Perry, Oklahoma was born on September 16, 1893
A single gunshot boom just before noon began the largest land run in the United States and the largest event of its kind in the world… the Cherokee Strip Land Run.
More than 100,000 “Boomers”…men, women and children came by wagon, carriage, horseback, or ran on foot to stake their claim to a 160 acre tract of some of the richest land ever opened to settlement. Those who managed to make it over the line before the official time were nicknamed “Sooners.”
In one day, a sea of canvas tents became home to a population of more than 40,000 people from all walks of life. Hard-working, honest homesteaders and pioneers shared the original town of Perry with villains and thieves, all contributing their own destinies to the town’s colorful past. At one point, Perry contained 110 saloons and gambling houses and was home to the notorious Bill Doolin Gang.
