Changing values about homeownership are changing the focus of

consumers, shifting from healthy finances to healthy lifestyles.

In the 2014 IKEA US Life at Home Report, only 1% of American say

their home is a measure of their success, a clear sign that priorities

shifting from external to internal factors.

Going Back to ‘Health is Wealth’

Aspirational well-being is becoming a trend in the 21st century home

living. Everything from food and furniture, to home products and

additions, is becoming more health and wellness-centered. Houses

are becoming a platform for in-sourcing, where amenities and

facilities people used to exclusively enjoy outside is being brought

into the daily environment.

This includes a spa, gym, an entertainment center, and even a

restaurant. Backyard swimming pools, hot tubs, and personal spas

are becoming hot commodities in home sales and renovations. Many

home buyers also appreciate properties better if these have a great

bathroom, a fitness area (even just a basketball hoop), an

entertainment area/room, and a spacious, well-designed kitchen.

The theme of many international sanitation and heating trade fairs

revolves around comfort and technology, with a particular emphasis

on the bath. This area of the home is emerging as an ideal stepping

stone towards improving the property. This is due to the growing size

of the room, the importance homeowners and buyers put into it, and

the opportunity for personalization. Everything from the showerheads

and hot tubs, to the vanity and other elements, there is an

opportunity for customization.

Master bathrooms, hot tubs, and home spas are evolving into a

multi-functional preparation, relaxation, and health space.

Going Back to Nature

Part of this shift towards health and wellness-oriented products and

facilities includes an inclination towards natural materials. 2016 and

beyond is seen as a time where home builders, designers, and buyers

will appreciate nature more.

Clean lines, warm earth colors, and natural materials are expected to

be the highlight themes for home design and decoration.
