Health and Wellness Lesson Plan Know Your Food 1 Grades K-2 Overview This activity will help students to understand which foods should be consumed daily (everyday foods) and which foods should be consumed in moderation (sometimes foods). foods. Have two note cards of each color present. Placetape on the backs of each of the note cards so that theycan later be stuck to the wall.

2. Use white tape to construct a starting line at one end ofthe room and a finish line at the other end of the room.

3. Behind the finish line, tape the signs to the wall, with“Sometimes Foods” on the left and “Everyday Foods” onthe right.

4. Scatter the colored note cards face down on the ground.5. Explain to the students the difference between

sometimes foods and everyday foods.Discuss examplesto prepare them for the activity.

6. Have students line up at the starting line and arrangethem into teams of two. Assign each team a color so thatthey know which note cards to retrieve.

7. Start the music and have one student from each teamwalk or jog to a note card of their specified color, read thenote card and identify whether it is an everyday orsometimes food, and take the note card to theappropriate sign. Have students stick their note cards totheir chosen sign and walk or jog back to the starting line.

8. Stop the music and allow time for every student to returnto the starting line.

9. Start the music again and have the other student fromeach team walk or jog to the remaining note card of theirspecified color, read the note card and identify whether itis an everyday or sometimes food, and take the notecardto the appropriate sign. Have students stick their notecards to their chosen sign and walk or jog back to thestarting line.

10. Stop the music and allow time for every student to returnto the starting line.

11. Evaluate each team’s note card placement and discussany misplaced note cards, making sure studentsunderstand why this food is an everyday or sometimesfood.

12. Have students return to their desk to do the activityassessment. Pass out a blank sheet of paper andcolored markers to every student.

13. Have students draw 3 pictures of sometimes foods and 3pictures of everyday foods, labeling which picturerepresents which type of food.

14. Evaluate the students’ answers and clarify anymisunderstandings about everyday and sometimes

Assessment The assessment is used to ensure that all students understandthe difference between everyday and sometimes foods.
