Introduction This training brochure has been prepared to provide all managers and staff with details of the range of courses provided by East and Midlothian Council`s Health and Safety Teams. If there is a health and safety course not in this brochure or you require it running in house, please contact your Health and Safety Team who may be able to assist in organising the course or provide advice on external providers. This brochure detailing the target audience for each in-house course, its duration and the learning outcomes. It should be noted however that a minimum of 5 candidates are required to attend in-house courses to make them viable. Hard copies of the brochure are available to those without access to PC`s on request via your Health and Safety Team. We trust you find the brochure useful. It should be noted that refreshments will be provided depending on availability and course duration for all courses however lunch is not provided so candidates are advised to make their own arrangements.

Managing Safely

Introduction

This four day course is aimed at Managers, Supervisors and Team Leaders within Midlothian or East Lothian Council. ‘Managing Safely’ is a four day internationally recognised and respected CDP accredited health and safety management course produced by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The course is run over a two week period, i.e. two days in each week.

Managing Safely’ courses are hosted alternatively between Midlothian and East Lothian Councils and tutored jointly by experienced trainers. Managers, supervisors and team leaders from either Council are welcome and encouraged to attend this course.

Course details

‘Managing Safely’ course will give you the necessary knowledge, confidence and skills to successfully tackle and manage, (on a daily basis), health and safety issues in your workplace. Over the four days, you will cover a range of topics which include:

• Identifying hazards.

• Assessing risks.

• Controlling risks.

• Understanding your responsibilities.

• Investigating accidents and incidents.

• Measuring performance.

• Protecting our environment. The course includes user friendly training notes, a number of group based quizzes and challenges; a small work based project and on day four you will be required to complete a multiple choice and written exam. On successful completion you will be awarded an IOSH Managing Safely Certificate which is valid for 3 years from date of issue. This one day course is aimed at Managers, Supervisors and Team Leaders who have previously attended the four day ‘Managing Safely’ course in 2012. ‘Managing Safely’ refresher is a one day internationally recognised CDP accredited health and safety management course which is hosted alternatively between Midlothian and East Lothian Councils and tutored jointly by experienced trainers. ‘Managing Safely’ refresher training course will build on the previous knowledge and skills gained when completing the four day course. The course will briefly cover topic from the original course and look at legislative changes and how to strengthen and improve on what your own health and safety management arrangements. (Revalidation training)

Introduction

This two day (12 hours) FAWR course is aimed at first aiders who have previously attended the three day ‘First Aid at Work’ (FAW) course and who need to re-qualify after 3 years to maintain their First Aid at Work Certificate. First aider`s are responsible for ensuring they book this course well in advance of their current FAW Certificate expiring (i.e. 3 months or less before their certificate expiry date). Please note if you allow your FAW certificate to expire you will have to complete the three day FAW course again to re-qualify.

Introduction This 4 hour AED course is aimed at key individuals who have been designated to provide use or access an AED in the workplace.
