Good safety and health is good business.

The cost of accidents at work and occupational illness ranges for most countries from 2.6 to 3.8% of Gross National Product (GNP)

Skill-Based Behavior

Skill-Based Behavior –a set of sensory-motor routines that result in control of integrated patterns of movements. This implies skillin the use of tools and equipment. Skill often manifests itself by performing accurately and quickly.

-Errors here may be the result of inaccuracy, caused by inattention, physical impairment, environmental distractions, or attempts toaccomplish too much in the time available.

Page 15: Health and safety management The basics and New trends and opportunities’

Multidisciplinary European Forum. KUAS Joensuu. March 2013

Rule-Based Behavior

–When several options for action present themselves the worker selects an action from a set of known rules. Based on the specific conditions, the worker selects a path of action that does not conflict with any known rules. Skill developed in applying rules rapidly is often called ‘know-how.’

-Errors may occur here as the result of not knowing or properly understanding all pertinent rules, or as the result of haste, not thoroughly considering all of the possible options.

Page 16: Health and safety management The basics and New trends and opportunities’

Multidisciplinary European Forum. KUAS Joensuu. March 2013

Knowledge-based behavior

--In situations where know-how is inadequate, the worker is required to derive a set of actions from a ‘mental model’of the situation.

-Rules for action are deduced from the model. When given an unusual situation, the worker may form a hypothetical explanation based on the mental model and conceptually test the outcome of certain actions before taking specific action. The model may include an assessment of the likelihood of certain factors that may have occurred.

-Errors here can result from an inadequate mental model, incorrect hypotheses, inappropriate assessment of probabilities, illogicalassessment of the outcome of certain actions, missing or inappropriate data, etc. etc.

-When more than one person (or levels in an organization) is involved in the process, inadequate communication between people may contribute to errors in the final outcome.

Safety Buddy

Safety Buddy is a task tracking application - Safety Buddy keeps you straight when it comes to all the tasks and actions that you need to capture and keep track of. All data is kept within a database on the device.

First, you would create a Task List, from there, you would create a number of actions that are part of and associated with the task list.

Task lists and actions can have high priority status applied to them so that they stand out - these are identified with a Red ribbon - like a book mark.

You can track each of your task lists and actions as well as Task List Metrics at a glance for any given Task List.

What is also pretty cool about this app is that you have the number of open tasks identified on the App Icon, so that you are always informed about the number of actions that are still outstanding.

Another cool feature that Safety Buddy has to offer is that you can email your task lists - the email shows completed task as well as high priority.

This will be a great tool for any Safety Professional.

emergències IN the future mobile applications Rave Alert calls themselves the “next

generation alerting system” for mass emergencies and is employed in places like colleges or apartment communities to alert a large group at one time via text messaging, email, PA system, Facebook and even via Twitter. It is being adopted most quickly by colleges and high schools in this post-Virginia Tech era.

“When the MyForce button is pressed, the user's phone begins recording audio. Trained dispatchers validate emergencies from listening to real-time audio. This is a safeguard to make sure no erroneous calls are sent to local first responders. The monitoring company is registered in all 50 states, maintaining trust with local first responders. MyForce reports are taken seriously.

MyForce can access a user's name, address, full physical description and emergency contact list, and provide that data to the police. Users are encouraged to list safety issues in their system profiles — experiences with violence or abuse, for example — plus allergies, medications and health issues. Profile information is secure and only accessed when there's an emergency reported.

If a call for help is sent out by accident, users have the option to call in and cancel the alert. Personal identification numbers must be provided to cancel a request. The operators will also call members to make sure it's not a true emergency. At this time, employees will ask for the specified pre-arranged "Safe Word." If the safe word is wrong, they will respond to the call because the user might be in trouble — or forced to cancel the alert. “

WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders

WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) is a mobile application designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents.

WISER: Information from Authoritative Sources

First responders in general, and HAZMAT units in particular, must make many decisions quickly in handling hazardous-materials incidents. They need accurate information about the hazardous substances, the emergency resources available, and the surrounding environmental conditions to save lives and minimize the impact on the environment and physical property. The WISER application extracts content from TOXNET's Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), an authoritative, peer-reviewed information resource maintained by the National Library of Medicine, and places that information into the hands of those who need it most.

Features of WISER

* Rapid access to the most important information about a hazardous substance by an intelligent synopsis engine and display called “Key Info”

* Intuitive, simple, logical user interface developed by working with experienced first responders

* Comprehensive decision support, including assistance in identification of an unknown substance and, once the substance is identified, guidance on immediate actions necessary to save lives and protect the environment

* GIS support provides for isolation/protective distance overlays on a map of the incident

* Access to NLM’s Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), which contains detailed peer-reviewed information on hazardous substances

* User Profiles enable users to specify the role they are currently playing at the scene of an incident: first responder, HAZMAT specialist, or EMS specialist. The key information presented to the user about a substance varies depending on this role, so that the information most relevant to the respective job can be quickly accessed.

* Radiological and biological substance support.

* Mobile support, providing first responders critical information where they need it, when they need it.

Coming next to WISER: Chemical Hazards Emergency Medical Management (CHEMM) integration and ERG 2012.

CHEMM (http://chemm.nlm.nih.gov/) will add content focused on enabling first responders, first receivers, other healthcare providers, and planners to plan for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of mass-casualty incidents involving chemicals.

Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) content will be updated to match the newly released ERG 2012.https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wiser-for-iphone-ipod-touch/id375185381?mt=8

WORKING ALONE

This App was developed specifically for the Oil and Gas Industry, however it can be used for lots of other industries or uses - especially when you want to know where your employee's are.

The Working Alone App allows field workers to keep their Supervisors up to date as to their situation when they are traveling around remote locations on their own.

One of the main advantages of the Working App is that it allows you to set up emails ahead of time, so that when you arrive at your location, you can hit send - what is unique about this App is that it includes your current location when it sends the email.

If you don't check in with your Supervisor or Call Centre when required by your company's policy, your Supervisor or Call Centre has the option of calling to make sure you are Ok and if they don't get a response, they can dispatch someone or emergency services to your location.
