The Dairy Industry

Page 2: Health and dairy

Dairy?-Any food product produced from a cow’s milk. -Dairy products include milk, cheese, yogurt, ice-

cream, sour cream, butter and cream.

Page 3: Health and dairy

Dairy products are essential for health..right?

According to the USDA food pyramid 2-3 servings of dairy

products are essential for good health. Is this true?

Page 4: Health and dairy

NO.If 2-3 servings of dairy products a day were essential for good health then 60-70% of the population would be AT RISK for disease due to their (lactose intolerance) inability to digest dairy products. In Fact, milk is the number one food allergy.

Page 5: Health and dairy

So what is all the hype about dairy? One thing, we often hear about dairy is that

it is essential for calcium intake. This is FALSE.

This idea that calcium only comes from dairy is so prominent in our culture that the two words almost go hand and hand. Have you ever related calcium to sesame seeds ? Truth is they are HIGHER in calcium than milk without the added bad fats and cholesterol.

Another interesting fact; Consumption of dairy products=osteoporosis. What? I know it sounds insane but research studies and statistics show that people/countries who consume large amounts of dairy have the highest incidences of osteoporosis. It doesn’t end there either. Dairy consumption is also linked to cancer, asthma, heart disease and other such chronic and fatal diseases.

Got osteoporosis and high triglycerides?

Page 6: Health and dairy

What makes dairy so unhealthy?

It was not meant for us.Cow milk is meant for baby cows. Cow milk is designed to meet the needs of a growing calf not a human infant or an adult human.

Short Answer

Long answerThe short answer sums it up but if you are anything like me, then you want real answers as to why. First and foremost, animal protein, especially when consumed in large amounts, is devastating to the human body for many reasons. One reason is that these types of proteins are highly acidic. Dairy contains animal proteins and a lot of it. The human body thrives on a balanced level of Ph in the body. The body thrives on a higher alkaline diet with a perfect ph being in the 6.5-7.5 alkaline range. This puts the ratio of alkaline to acidity at 80% to 20%. Lots of foods are acidic such as the majority of whole grains and even potatoes. However, animal proteins, such as diary products*, are extremely acidic, moreover, they are also full of bad fats and cholesterol. Acidic foods (like dairy) rob the body of calcium and other minerals. The body has to pull calcium from the bones in order to neutralize the acidic proteins. This causes osteoporosis, which is caused by calcium loss, not low calcium levels. This same mechanism of alkaline and acid ratios can also explain many other diseases such as asthma, hypertension and even cancer because too many acids in the body leads to the body producing mucus to buffer the acid. Mucus causes Inflammation. Inflammation is seen as the root of most human aliments.

*Dairy products that have been allowed to sour (cottage cheese, buttermilk)are less acidic than dairy products that have not soured such as milk and cheddar.

Page 7: Health and dairy

A diet high in acidity provides the perfect environment for cancer cells as well. Caner cells cannot thrive in an alkaline environment. In order to raise your body’s alkaline level you need to consume lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. The majority of fruits and vegetables are alkaline. There are a few exceptions to this rule. Animal proteins should be avoided or used very sparingly because they are SUPER HIGH in acidity as well as fat and cholesterol. The majority of your acidity should come from the consumption of whole grains which are also low in fat, cholesterol and high in fiber. A diet centered around grains, fruits and vegetables would provide your body with a healthy and balanced ph. Even if dairy products were low in acidity, the high levels of saturated fats and cholesterol would still make it a very unhealthy food choice. Consuming foods high in bad fats and cholesterol cause heart disease. The key to a healthy diet is a balance between the right foods. Animal proteins, such as dairy products, do not have a place in a healthy diet. You want to create a balance of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains, nuts and seeds.

Page 8: Health and dairy
Page 9: Health and dairy

"In only two generations, the rate of hip fractures in the U.S. has quadrupled, and it is currently one of the highest rates in the world. Americans are also near the top of the chart for dairy consumption. Would someone out there please tell me why we keep telling our children that dairy foods strengthen their bones? Excess protein intake-not only from milk but all animal protein sources-increases the need for calcium to neutralize acidic protein breakdown products, destroying bone in the process. A lifetime of a high-protein diet usually eats away at your bones. Lower protein vegetarian diets are associated with significantly higher bone mineral density. So the first and most important dietary step is to eat less protein. This generally means cutting down on milk. Although dairy products contain calcium, little of it is deposited in the bones-instead the calcium is used to neutralize the acidity brought on by milk protein.“-Dr. Whitaker (Health and Healing Digest)

Sesame seeds: 28 % of daily calcium per serving, 23 % of daily iron, 13 grams of fat (10 grams of which are the healthy fats (mono and poly fats), zero grams of cholesterol with 16% of the daily value of fiber.

Page 10: Health and dairy

“Milk is simply no good for humans... There is overwhelming evidence that milk and milk products are harmful to many people, both adults and infants. Milk is a contributing factor in constipation, chronic fatigue, arthritis, headaches, muscle cramps, obesity, allergies and heart problems”- Dr. William Ellis (researched dairy in regards to nutrition for 42 years)

Spinach: 56 % of daily vitamin A per serving, 14% of daily vitamin C and zero grams of fat, cholesterol or sugars.

Page 11: Health and dairy

I just love advertisements. They are so misleading its humorous.

Fact: Though cheese products contain calcium, they also contain highly acidic animal proteins that will neutralize the calcium as well as draw calcium from your bones. Cheese products are also high in bad fats and sodium. Another fact, leading nutritionists recommend limiting dairy to 0-1 serving a day based on research.

Page 12: Health and dairy

Fact: Dairy cows are not smiling nor do they get “cute” names.

Page 13: Health and dairy

WOW! MADE WITH WHOLE GRAINS! It must be good for me and look at all that calcium rich cheese!!!!!!!!!!!

Page 14: Health and dairy

Maybe NOT.

Page 15: Health and dairy

This is where advertisements really tick me off; When they gear it to kids and parents. It is a sick way to make a buck. The carton is explosive with explanations on how great plant-based DHA is for bone, eye and heart health. Yes, but DHA is not found in milk unless added via a secondary process. Wouldn’t it be better to get DHA the natural way? A diet rich in a variety of healthy foods will provide the body with ALA which the body can convert to DHA as well as EPA. This can all happen without 26 grams of sugar per serving.

Page 16: Health and dairy

Look at all those added nutrients. Maybe if we throw in all these extra nutrients, we can make it healthy!! Add the sugar and what do you got? A unhealthy drink laced with nutrients and sugar.

Page 17: Health and dairy

Maybe you could give a hoot less about healthy eating. After all, life is too short to run around and count grams of sodium, fats, and cholesterol!! Who CARES! Besides, fries taste great dipped in milkshakes!

If you don’t care about your health, OKAY! Then your almost on your way to enjoying all the dairy you LIKE…UNLESS you care about the environment. If you care about the environment and want to make the planet sustainable for future generations-SIT your cheese burger DOWN!

Page 18: Health and dairy

“A single dairy cow produces about 120 pounds of wet manure per day, which is equivalent to the waste produced by 20–40 people. That means California’s 1.4 million dairy cows produce as much waste as 28–56 million people.”U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Page 19: Health and dairy

This is a picture of a diary farm in Maryland. The run-off you see in this picture is cow poop and lots of it. This poop is laced with many hazardous chemicals such as antibiotics, hormones and poisons that act as a destructive sludge across all that it touches.

“Factory farming is one of the most significant contributors to today's most serious environmental problems.”-Henning Steinfeld (Senior U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization official)

Page 20: Health and dairy

“Millions of gallons of liquefied feces and urine have seeped into the environment from collapsed, leaking or overflowing storage lagoons, and flowed into rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and groundwater. Hundreds of manure spills have killed millions of fish.” -Vegan Outreach

“Meanwhile, the quantity of waste produced by farm animals in the U.S. is more than 130 times greater than that produced by humans. Agricultural runoff has killed millions of fish, and

is the main reason why 60% of America's rivers and streams are impaired,”- Farm Sanctuary

Page 21: Health and dairy

Picture of a “lagoon” of poop from a hog farm in Georgia.

A little thing called FACTS-80% of ammonia emissions in the U.S came from animal waste. Ammonia disrupts ecosystems, ruin soil quality, damage crops, and jeopardize human health. -87% of the use of freshwater in the U.S is used in agriculture and accounts for 93% of water depletion. The vast majority of this water is used for farm animal feed production.-One pound of animal protein requires about 100 times more water than producing a pound of grain. -Waste generated by factory farms has already polluted more then 35,000 miles of rivers in 22 states and contaminated groundwater in 17 states.

-

Page 22: Health and dairy

-Factory farming is a leading cause of soil and groundwater contamination.- waste from factory farms make their way into our water resources destroying aquatic habitats and life. - Most farms are on and near streams and river that carry excrement from factory farms into the Mississippi River, which ultimately deposits this hazardous waste into the gulf of Mexico. --Oxygen depletion from animal manure and fertilizer pollution has created a 7,000 square mile “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana where virtually all of the sea animals and plants have died and most forms of aquatic life can no longer survive.- Livestock grazing is one of the most ecologically destructive forces of the modern era. - In the U.S alone, livestock grazing adversely effects 22% of federal threatened and endangered species.- Federal government agencies exterminate vast numbers of coyotes, prairie dogs, and other native animals who “interfere” with or who are precieved as “threats” to livestock or agriculture interests. -Hundreds of millions of acres of forests and rainforests worldwide, including 260 million acres in the U.S have already been cleared for livestock grazing or animal feed crops. -40% of the total landmass in the U.S is used to raise animals for food.- 80% of the agricultural land in the U.S is used to feed the nearly 10 billion farm animals each year in this country alone.

- From Farm Sanctuary leaflet on factory farming: Destroying the Environment

Page 23: Health and dairy

Bottom line: It takes MORE land and energy to feed people with meat. You have to grow the grains to feed the animals and then find places to dump their waste. It also takes an incredible amount of resources to slaughter, process, and transport

the meat products. Our greed for meat is causing an astronomical level of environmental damage. We could feed more people

and reverse environmental damage dramatically by cutting meat products from our diet.

Maybe that doesn’t bother you either. Maybe you could care less about the environment, future generations, or any of that ‘tree hugger” jumbo…

Page 24: Health and dairy

Unless of course, 925 million people starving across the globe doesn’t bother you either. Think there is not a connection between our greed for meat and other’s lack of water and food? Think again. It is common sense even without facts or statistics. If there is a piece of pie (earth) meant for 5 people (world population), yet one of the five (American) grab 90% of the pie, then what does that leave for the four?

Page 25: Health and dairy
Page 26: Health and dairy

Its NOT fair.

Page 27: Health and dairy

It is time to share our piece of the pie.

Does the world produce enough food to feed everyone?YES, and the world could produce even more than that by switching to a plant-based diet. These switch would also curb environmental damage. How does the food-agricultural business contribute to world hunger? According to world hunger organization, there are two leading factors in causing world hunger. One of those is Climate Change. America is a leader in the factors causing climate change. Animal-agribusiness, as mentioned earlier is a leading force in environmental damage, thus climate change. Yet who suffers? Not me and you. We will eventually but as if right now, it’s the people living in developing nations that are suffering. We are using a large surplus of the world’s resources (to fatten our meat) while other’s pay the price. Due to climate change, many populations have found themselves without the ability to farm the land due to shifting climate changes, droughts and flooding.

“Climate change has been cited in one major study to cause 300,000 deaths a year.” -Guardian.co.uk

Page 28: Health and dairy

A second cause for world hunger is the political and economic structure of the world. Resources are not disturbed throughout the world based on need. Resources are distributed based on economic and political power.

Did you know that American animal agribusiness companies buy land in developing nations to grow grains for our meat? Did you know that these deals leave populations under the manipulation and control of our big businesses all so we can live the good life? Gives the expression “living off the fat of the land” a whole new ring doesn’t it?

“Living off the fat of another’s land”

Page 29: Health and dairy

"Why Attractive?

Vast, fertile, irrigable land at low rent. Abundant water resources. Cheap labor. Warmest hospitality*

The image has been changed but the words remain the same. This was an advertisement for a land sale in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government opened millions of land for sale to foreign investment companies. American was apart of this. It takes an incredible amount of land and water to feed our livestock. It takes too MUCH. These poor Ethiopians, second poorest population on EARTH, are starving while their government sells off the only resource they have left- their land. How sad is that? Pretty damn sad. *Washingtonpost, The ultimate crop rotation: Wealthy nations outsource crops to Ethiopia's farmlands. 2009

Page 30: Health and dairy

Why do we need so much land and water when our own country is rich in land and resources?

“It takes an estimated 4,000 gallons of water to produce one day of animal-based food for the average American. One day of plant-based food only requires about 300 gallons.”- planettoplanet.org

All the while, 1/3 of the worlds population lacks access to safe drinking water.

Roughly 30%-40% of our land is used for grazing cows alone.

“The equivalent of seven football fields is bulldozed every minute for animal agriculture.”- Smithsonian Institute

Page 34: Health and dairy

Maybe you could care less about all that too. Maybe some starving man scratching at the earth for any sign of food on land owned by the United States doesn’t burn your conscience at all. After all, you can always just donate 10 cents a day or support some missionary. Maybe you can sit down to a huge steak and a glass of milk without so

much as a flinch as long as….

Page 35: Health and dairy

The suffering of billions of other creatures a year in your country alone does not bother you either.

A dairy cow suffering from a painful infection known as Mastitis. A whopping 60% of our dairy cows suffer his horrible affliction. There is nothing done for them. They are continually forced produce milk.

Page 36: Health and dairy

The dairy’s industry forgotten victim

Life on a Dairy Farm

Page 37: Health and dairy

Each cow is it’s own unique individual. No two cows have the same spot pattern, just as no two humans have the same fingerprint. Cows are very social animals creating strong bonds within their herds. The bond between a female cow and her calve is especially strong. These bonds last years in natural settings with mother cows nursing their young for several years. Cows are also highly intelligent and sensitive.

Page 38: Health and dairy

Cinci Freedom was one of the few lucky ones. In 2002, she escaped a slaughterhouse in Ohio. She jumped a six-foot fence and ran for her life. She spent the next two weeks in Cincinnati’s Mount Storm park. There was fruitless attempts to recapture her but she prevailed in her countless escapes. Her escapes captivated the city and she was granted freedom from the meat company to which she belonged. Farm Sanctuary, a non-profit organization, dedicated to changing the fate of farm animals, took her in. She lived a short but peaceful life on the farm. She became apart of a herd and developed a strong bond with another cow named “Queenie.” Cinci remained tenacious and slowly grew less weary of people. Cinci reminded the people of Cincinnati, for a moment, that cows are individuals with a desire all living creatures

share-freedom. Sadly, Cinci’s story is a very rare one. 30-45 million cows a year are slaughtered in America every year without any chance for escape. This number does not include the number of cows raised for slaughter- just the number of cows that survive long enough to make it to slaughter.

Cinci Freedom

Page 39: Health and dairy

What did Cinci Escape?

Hell.

Page 40: Health and dairy

The dairy industry begins with a female cow. She is artificially impregnated with semen from a bull (male cow) who is manually masturbated by a human. The life of a factory farmed cow is pure and unadulterated hell. They are born in a cold, metal hell. They are pulled from their mothers immediately. This immediate separation is incredibly painful. There are numerous reports of workers being killed and injured by females cows fighting for their young. If the calf is a female, chances are she will become a dairy cow to replace the older females who have already spent their lives confined to a metal crate with metal machines constantly pumping milk from their sore breast. If the calf is born a male, he will be become a beef, veal, or semen cow.

Page 41: Health and dairy

Female cows are forced to produce 10 times the amount of milk that they would normally produce. In order to get this unnatural amount of milk from a cow, the industry has to use genetic manipulations, hormones and force. The cow’s breast become very sore and swollen. The machines are indifferent to their pain. The cows have no escape. They cannot even turn around. This is their fate, for about 5 years. A cow’s natural lifespan is 25 years but due to extreme pain and suffering these animals endure, their bodies give out early and they become beef cows. There is no peaceful retirement for these dairy cows.

Page 42: Health and dairy

"The very saddest sound in all my memory was burned into my awareness at age five on my uncle's dairy farm in Wisconsin. A cow had given birth to a beautiful male calf. The mother was allowed to nurse her calf but for a single night. On the second day after birth, my uncle took the calf from the mother and placed him in the veal pen in the barn - only ten yards away, in plain view of the mother. The mother cow could see her infant, smell him, hear him, but could not touch him, comfort him, or nurse him. The heartrending bellows that she poured forth - minute after minute, hour after hour, for five long days - were excruciating to listen to. They are the most poignant and painful auditory memories I carry in my brain."- Dr. Michael Klaper

Page 43: Health and dairy

Life for a male cow is just as tragic. They have three fates. They will be beef, semen or a veal cow. Veal cows are confined to a tiny crate with a chain around their neck. They are also confined to a liquid diet intentionally lacking in essential nutrients in order to give their meat a pink color. They are left in the dark for close to 23 hours a day and even deprived of water. They live in this wooden hell for approximately 14 weeks. At this age, they have usually reached the industry’s desired weight and they are slaughtered. They die never knowing the comfort of their mother, sunlight, the taste of grass, water or even proper nourishment. Veal cows, due to their extreme isolation, present an array of psychological disorders such as

repetitive movements and cries.

Page 44: Health and dairy

My wooden hell.

Page 45: Health and dairy

Male cows destined to become beef cows have a similar hellish fate. They are dehorned, branded and castrated without anesthesia. Some males are seen as potential breeders and thus are manually masturbated by humans until their sperm count declines. At this point they meet the same fate as other male cows. They are confined on small feed lots with many other males cows. After a small time on feed lots, the cows are sent to a “fattening lot” where they are hoped to reach the industry’s desired weight.

Page 46: Health and dairy

Cows being drug from a truck for slaughter No matter whether a calf is born a male or female, they all meet the same fate. They all make the final trip to the slaughter house. Once inside, the are stunned with a bolt to the brain. Oftentimes, the factory worker misses his target due to the high speed of the process. After stunning, the cows are pulled upside down by one leg. They travel down an assembly line where they have their main artery cut for bleeding. Again, oftentimes the animals survive this process and are alive while their skin is pulled from their bodies. The speed of slaughter ranges from 175-400 cows an hour. A lot of mistakes are made making the process incredibly inhumane.

Page 47: Health and dairy

These animal are not feed a natural diet either. Cows are natural grazers. Cows on factory farms are forced to eat an unnatural diet rich in chemically laced grains and soy products. Their feed is heavily laced with chemicals, drugs and even plastics. Cow feed also contains ground up pieces of skin, feathers, hooves, blood and bones from other dead animals and even bed litter from poultry farms. The cows are also subject to daily hormone injections. This unhealthy diet is transferred into their bodies and milk. We consume it.

“Under current law, pigs, chickens, and turkeys that have been fed rendered cattle can be rendered and fed back to cattle—a loophole that may allow mad cow agents to

infect healthy cattle.”-www.ucsusa.org

Got Pus?

Page 56: Health and dairy

Once a male cow grows horns, they are cut off without any anesthesia or pain medication. This process is terribly painful as the horns are quite sensitive with nerve endings and blood vessels.

Can you imagine this pain level?

Page 57: Health and dairy

Page 58: Health and dairy

Branding…as if already just a piece of..

Page 59: Health and dairy

Meat.

Page 60: Health and dairy

These animals also suffer a HORRENDOUS AMOUNT of additional abuse at the

hands of underpaid and overworked employees. Cows are kicked, poked, pushed, raped, shoved, burned and even bulldozed.

These events discussed in this presentation regarding animal welfare are not isolated. 99% of America’s livestock live their lives on factory farms. Even cows raised on ORGANIC farms face this same fate. The difference between traditional dairy farms and organic dairy farms is not animal welfare. Cows on organic farms are feed a natural diet and are not given hormones. Other than these few differences, the farming methods are the same.

This is wrong.

Page 61: Health and dairy

Maybe that doesn’t bother you either. Maybe the intense suffering of millions of creatures every year in your home country doesn’t bother you at all. If so, you are free to drink up!

Page 62: Health and dairy

Enjoy all the chemicals, hormones, drugs, traces of feces, blood, and pus you can squeeze into one meal.

Toxic chemicals are rampant in our mechanized environment. Even our food has traces of toxic chemicals unless you are eating genuinely organic products. Dairy products and cow meat is no exception to this rule. Cow milk and meat contains dangerous chemicals and even drugs such as anti-inflammatories, sex hormones, steroids, and antibiotics. The dairy industry would have us all believe that these drugs are safe. That is bullshit. Sorry, but let’s keep it real.

Cow milk also contains traces of pus, blood and feces.

One hormone of special concern to many is the hormone invented by the company Monsanto. The hormone is known as recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone or (rBGH). It has sparked controversy because of its link to breast and colon cancer. The use of this hormone has been banned in several other countries. America is not one of those countries. Despite the links, the hormone remains. It is just one of many.

Page 63: Health and dairy

Learn about your biological make-up. We are not designed to consume meat or dairy products. We are especially not designed to consume toxic chemicals or synthetic hormones and drugs. SAY NO to dairy products. It takes time but you can reduce and even eliminate dairy from your diet. There are many alternatives to milk and meat products. If you have a craving for cow milk or meat, go to stores like Whole Foods or Fresh Market. These stores sell beef that was pasture raised as well as raw milk from pasture raised cows. Never waste meat or milk. Read studies on nutrition. One of the largest and more informative nutrition studies is the China Study. Check it out. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Eat only organic and humanely raised. Donate to organizations that are working for the improved welfare of animals and the environment. Learn about cows and their natural behaviors. Learn about modern day factory farming methods. Write major meat and dairy companies. Tell them you want meat and dairy products from healthy and happy animals. Talk to other people about what you have learned. Spread the word every chance you can.
