headwaters probe heart patient compaint
DESCRIPTION
This article is a hard news story about a patient at Headwaters Hospital regarding the response to indications of a possible heart attack. It was a different type of news story than I was used to writing. This was the first article I had to write where i had to deal with resistance to speak with me about the subject.TRANSCRIPT
Cholly Boland, presidentand CEO of Headwaters
Health Care Centre, saysthe hospital will investigatea complaint it received froma Mono resident concerningits response to indications
he faced a possible heartattack.
An e-mail containing acopy of Ian McKay’s letterof complaint to the hospital
was received by this paperon Tuesday.
Mr. Boland, saidHeadwaters has a completeprocess concerning patient
complaints. “With any com-plaint we take it very seri-ously, we investigate it, wefollow up directly with thepatient and we implementchanges based on whatwe’ve learned,” he said.
Although Mr. Bolandcommented thatHeadwaters would be fol-lowing up directly with Mr.McKay, he said they willnot be commenting on thisspecific situation publicly.
However, he did com-ment on Headwaters’ desireto improve in the event ofan unsatisfactory visit to thehospital.
“We prefer that they do itwhen they’re having theexperience, when they’rehaving the situation, at thetime that they have a com-plaint,” he said. “That’s theway we improve when peo-ple tell us what they areunsatisfied with and wewelcome that opportunity.”
In the letter, Mr. McKaysaid that on Tuesday, March9 he experienced a sharp
pain in his chest whilewalking to work alongToronto’s UniversityAvenue. The pain stoppedwhen he stopped walkingbut it was enough to worryhim into going to theHeadwaters walk-in clinicafter work that day.
Mr. McKay said he wasseen that day by one of thedoctors at the clinic whobelieved it was heart-relatedpain and prescribed a nitro-glycerin spray designed torelieve the pain if it hap-pened again. The doctor hadalso stated that Mr. McKaywould need to undergo astress test as well as anangiogram.
Although an urgentrequest was then faxed toanother doctor’s office toschedule these tests, byThursday, March 11, Mr.McKay had yet to hear any-thing from that doctor’soffice about scheduling. When he called the officehe was told the fax fromTuesday hadn’t been dealt
with yet. Mr. McKay said he then
went to his own doctor inOakville on Friday morn-ing, March 12. She hadagreed that the symptomswere heart-related andrequired urgent attention, but referred him back toHeadwaters because of hisdesire to be treated closer tohome. He says he spent sev-eral hours in the Emergencydepartment at Headwatersbefore yet another doctoragreed that he needed toschedule the same tests asthe two previous doctors.
Initially, the earliestappointment Headwatershad available for anEchocardiogram was April12, a month away, but theX-ray department latermanaged to do it on March24. He said the hospital’sDoctor of Radiology “toldme that she would call thespecialist and ask to havethe timing for the stress testspeeded up..”
Mr. McKay said that
after waiting for a few dayshe called the specialist’soffice only to be told thestress test could not bescheduled until after he hada consultation with the spe-cialist, on April 22.
“I immediately contact-ed my doctor who said thistiming was unacceptableunder these circumstancesand, having given up onbeing able to receive treat-ment in the HeadwatersHealth Care system in anykind of timely fashion, Iagreed that she refer me toher local system, i.e.,Oakville Trafalgar andTrillium Hospitals. Withinthat system, I was able to gothrough all the necessarydiagnostic examinations/consultations and to receive(successful) angioplasty onMay 13,” just three weekslater than his consultationwith the specialist wouldhave been in Orangeville.
“I was advised by thecardiologist that, based onthe nature of the blockage inmy artery, I was fortunatenot to have had a heartattack. I was scheduled formy follow-up consultationwith the cardiologist onJune 17 and it appears all iswell.”
Mr. McKay said his con-cerns lie in the Headwatersadministrative system, thepossible need for more spe-cialists and the delays heexperienced.
Mr. Boland is not com-menting on this specificcase but stated that every-one involved will be spokento during the investigation.
“We really very sincere-ly want to ensure patientsdon’t have unsatisfactoryexperiences atHeadwaters,” he said. “Wewant to make sure that wehave the opportunity toimprove.”

Orangeville Mayor RobAdams, MP David Tilson,Fire Chief AndyMacintosh and owner JohnLokker, among others, were at the old firehall onBroadway to for a ground-breaking ceremony.
Since Mr. Lokkerbought the fire hall, whichhad been used as a PizzaPizza outlet, five yearsago, he has been planningto renovate it in an attemptto restore it to its formerglory.
“We saw potential torestore it to its originalstate,” he commented.
Architect Ian Starkeystated that the addition tothe building would be atotal of 1500 square feet. The renovations will con-vert the old firehall intoleasable office space, mix-ing the original charm ofthe historic building andthe contemporary style ofMr. Starkey.
Mr. Lokker said theyare focusing on preservingas much of the style aspossible. They are makingreplicas of the original firehall doors currently beingarchived, as well as an oldfire hydrant.
A deadline has been setfor the end of Decemberthis year.
