Preparing your child and giving them a headstart - school readiness
School will teach your child literacy and numeracy - but you can support their emotional wellbeing
and develop their independence and social skills since these are the most important skills children
need for school.
Experts list some key skills and behaviours children need going into school without support.Emotional maturity: being able to go into situations with
unfamiliar people and handle being angry, sad or frustrated, and to be able to play and share with others.
Physical health and development: being able to climb equipment safely, throw and catch a ball, cut with scissors and draw
with crayons.
Practical skills: being able to use the toilet independently and wash their hands, being able to dress themselves, unpack their lunch box and eat their lunch.
Social skills and concentration: being able to share, take turns, get along with others, sort out problems, follow rules and finish tasks. Children need to be able to concentrate for 20 minutes to pay attention in class.
Good language and communication skills: being able to listen to others, speak and express their thoughts clearly and understand what the teacher says.
School Readiness
“We need to let parents know that holding off the start to school is not a sign of poor parenting if your child needs longer to bloom
and flourish. Indeed, it is actually a sign of good parenting. Some children just take a little bit more time to shine”.
