Athletics On August 21, the Charters Tow-ers Secondary Schools Inter-School Athletics Carnival was held at Columba Catholic College. We thank them for their organisation and for the support received from the other schools. With COVID re-strictions in place, there was a lim-it of 500 people who could attend. Thank you to ASSG families for their understanding as I know it is an important day in the communi-ty. It was a great two days of competition with All Souls St Ga-briels School winning the girls re-lay trophies, the individual boys and girls shields and the overall trophy. Thanks to Miss Taylor and all the coaches for their work pre-paring the teams.

Inter-School Sport After having no school sport last term, this term has been a hive of activity with Y11 & 12 Softball, Rugby League and Netball com-mencing. Boys Tennis will also be this term. Last Tuesday after school we host-ed BTC in both Netball and Rugby League across a range of grades finishing with Firsts football under lights. The students enjoyed actu-ally getting out there and partici-pating. Darren Fleming

Academic Dean Ian Dietrich 2022 Graduates (current Year 10) Subject Selections The data collected on subject se-lection forms has been entered. Heads of Department have ana-lysed the choices indicated by stu-dents and have given recommen-dations to Mrs Fleming and I. These comments will be included in the career discussions Mrs Flem-ing & I will have with each individ-ual Year 10 student in the coming days regarding their subject selec-tions and career pathways. These discussions will focus on particular requirements for the possible ca-reer pathways students were con-sidering. This is just one more step toward the start of senior studies next term. Term 3 Exam Block A schedule has been published and emailed to all families and students in Years 7 to 12. Please note that all students in Years 7 to 12 have either an exam, assign-ment or short course to com-plete on the last day of the block – Tuesday 15 Septem-ber. Other events/assessment items that will take place during and af-ter the Exam Block include:

Friday 11 September – Special Assembly for Colours Awards in morning – all students wear Formal Uniform for the whole school day.

Wednesday 16 September – Years 7 to 12 in normal classes – assessment items returned and Term 4 work begun – including White Card for Construction

course for all Year 10 students starting to study ITS in Term 4 plus some students in Years 11 and 12 moving into the construc-tion industry.

Thursday 17 September – Years 7 to 12 in normal classes – as-sessment items returned and Term 4 work begun.

Friday 18 September – travel day.

Stationery Lists for 2021 As we approach the start of new senior units from the beginning of Term 4, students and families in Years 10 and 11 have received an electronic copy of the stationery re-quirements. Many of the items on the list are part of regular set of stationery purchased for a school year and may only require a ‘top-up’. Individual subject require-ments are also listed for families to purchase in the coming weeks, in preparation for the start of Term 4. Term 3 & Term 4 Senior Program As I indicated in the last Phoenix Rising newsletter, the Senior Lead-ership Team have been consulting with many stakeholders regarding the processes and procedures tak-ing place with the change to the Year 12 school year. These discus-sions started in September 2019. COVID-19 changes have also had an impact upon this program as it has been fine-tuned in recent months. We have discussed and made arrangements for a range of traditional events that have taken place at the end of a Year 12 school year – sport, cultural activi-ties, Year 12 Townsville trip, Year 11 Student Leadership Program, Colours Presentations, Combined Schools Formal, Year 12 First Aide Course, Short Courses, Examina-tion preparations/study weeks, Senior Dinners, Preliminary Prize Giving Ceremony, Awards Day, Mass of God Speed and Valedictory Dinner. The program has been discussed in a combined Years 11 and 12 meet-ing earlier this term. An infor-mation letter, that includes all of the listed activities and additional details, has been emailed to Year 12 students and their families. We are all looking forward to a strong and successful ending to the academic year with our graduating class. It certainly has been an in-teresting senior year, and I believe our young men and women have been very resilient with all that has taken place.

Pastoral Care Team Wendy Fleming Dean of Students Relationships and our Habits As we move into the busy assessment period of the term, it is timely to remember the importance of maintaining supportive relationships. It is timely to remember that almost all behaviour is chosen and is in re-sponse to motivation – of wanting something. There are Seven Caring Habits that will help with the mainte-nance of positive behavioural habits: 1. Supporting

2. Encouraging

3. Listening

4. Accepting

5. Trusting

6. Respecting

7. Negotiating differences These contrast with the Seven Negative Habits: 1. Criticizing

2. Blaming

3. Complaining

4. Nagging

5. Threatening

6. Punishing

7. Bribery to change behavior We strongly support our school community engaging in the Seven Car-ing Habits to help strengthen the way we learn and live. PESA The Postive Education Schools Association recently delivered online Professional Development for our Pastoral Care Team on the theme of “Making Healthy Happen for Your Workplace”. This focused on the mental health of both staff and students, examining current statistics and then talking about strategies being employed to address concerns. Throughout this year there has been an upsurge in the reporting of mental health incidents throughout the community, which reflect the general uncertainty and anxiety that has been perpetuated by the cur-rent COVID-19 pandemic. Whilst we feel very safe in this part of Queensland, we are mindful that other parts of Australia are not so for-tunate and we hope that we continue to find a way forward for every-one in these uncertain times.

Dean of Students Wendy Fleming Be Nice It is timely to remind everyone of the need to BE NICE, particularly at this time of the term with the add-ed pressures of assignments and impeding exams. Inappropriate lan-guage and behaviour is not ac-ceptable, either in the day school or in dorms. The vast majority of students are adhering to this ex-pectation, even when experiencing heightened anxiety, and are sup-porting their friends. Leadership The Year 11 students continue their leadership journey, actively seeking to clarify their goals for 2021. We choose to undertake leadership activities for all students prior to any specific leaders being identified to ensure that the notion of working together as Seniors in 2021 is reinforced strongly. The co-hesive nature of the current Year 11 students has been evident as they contribute ideas, listen to each other, and seek to identify common and shared goals for the upcoming year. ILF Our recent Free Dress Day in the Secondary School raised funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). This organisation seeks to improve the literacy opportunities and standards in indigenous com-munities throughout Australia. Our funds contribute to resources, es-pecially reading books, that are dis-tributed throughout communities. The funds are also allocated to au-thors-in-residence who travel to communities and work with them to raise the profile of literacy, whilst also helping to develop meaningful stories from communi-ties. ILF also publishes stories from these communities, many of which resonate strongly with our stu-dents. Chapel Ms Colleen Brown has been visiting the Year 7 Education For Life (EFL) classes to talk with them about sig-nificant areas and items in the Chapel, and answering questions to strengthen their understanding. Thank you Colleen for giving up your time to work with our Year 7 students, and thank you Mrs Shad-forth for co-ordinating these visits.

Chaplaincy Team Darren Fleming As you will be aware, each week there is a Junior School Chapel Service and a separate Senior School Chapel Service. Both Chap-el Captains, Kurtis and Jett, take a lead role in these services and they are assisted by other Year 6 students in Junior School, and in the case of the Senior School, a weekly Serving Team. Each Serv-ing Team of Year 10 students is in place from the start of Term 3 and then serves for a full year, hand-ing over to a new team at the end of Term 2 when they are in Year 11. Students are supported by our Chaplaincy Team staff comprising Liturgical Assistants: Mr Fleming, Mrs Storey, Mrs Dick-son and organist Mrs Fleming. We also have a number of students who are responsible for the up-keep of the Chapel and are re-sponsible for the floral arrange-ments and sound system. I would like to offer thanks for the dedicated work of our outgoing teams: Year 12 Harry Titley (bell) Year 11 Lachy Lathwell, Riley Goodwin, Kodi Boalar, Grace Newnham, Jas-mine Elliott, Matt McKellar, Max Washington, Jimmy McDowall, Norman Prior-Bounghi, Sarah Mil-ton, Hayley Grant, Tio Hensley, Tahl Hopkins-Masina, Hugh Bar-nicoat, Blaine Woodard, Piper Godfrey, Hailea Wallace and Ethan Cowan. Ethan retires as the thuri-fer after 5 years of service as thu-rifer and boat boy, thanks Ethan. Continuing in their roles are thuri-fers Fred Flute (Year 10) and Bryce Cowan (Year 9) and boat boy Ben Dickson (Year 8). Taking over on the bell will be Kayden Fogarty (Year 11) who has assist-ed for the past year. Over the last two weeks, we have been supported by Fr Kenneth and Rev Sharon, who have con-ducted services for us. We appre-ciate them travelling from Towns-ville to be with us. Their messages have resonated with our students. Rev Sharon shared with us a “Think” poster.

Board Shorts Information from the All Souls St Gabriels School Board of Governors Our August meeting was strongly attended in person and via Zoom by our members. The Board recognised the passing of John Stalley (Prefect, White Dorm 1949 - 1954) with a minute silence. After placing the Design and Technology project on hold due to Covid-19, the Board has re-solved to recommence discus-sions with the architect. The Building and Grounds Com-mittee reported upon the pro-gress of the Halse Hall entry pro-ject. The Charters Towers Region-al Council have indicated support of the works moving to applica-tion stage. The Marketing Committee met re-cently. A roster of volunteers is being sought to staff the “Emporium” (pop-up shop). Website development and strengthening links between past and present students are key fo-cus points. The 100 years celebrations plan-ning and navigating within COVID is still underway. Our Governance Committee met recently and worked on the initial stages of a draft Strategic Plan. An induction process for incoming Board Members is being re-viewed.

The Arts Kylie Kempster Head of The Arts Students recognized for Artistic Achievement Two of our students have been awarded recently for their truly excellent work in the Arts. Storm Crossland earned first place in the Photography section, and second place overall in the QATSIF (Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation) Art Competition. As the name sug-gests, competitors entered from around the state, making Storm’s award all the more prestigious. Not to be outdone, Dustin Finger has also received an award for his recital of Granny and the Snake by Marco Gliori, in the EKKA Bush Poetry Compe-tition || Class 3 - Student 12 years and under. No stranger to performance, Dusty has proven to the rest of the state what Charters Towers Eisteddfod patrons have known for some time - that when it comes to bringing a bush ballad to life, he is number one! Year 3 visit the Art Room Miss Oberg and her Year 11 and 12 Art students welcomed some visitors from the Junior School recently when Year 3 came to have a look at how we care for the environment in the Arts. They were given a tour of our many boxes of recyclable materials, just waiting to be turned into artistic creations, as well as getting a sneak preview of the garments being creat-ed from waste by our Year 11 and 12 Visual Art in Practice students. They also checked out how we manage, store and dispose of paint and other chemicals to avoid harm coming to the environment. Thank you Year 3 for your intelligent questions and your enthusiasm! You really made our day! 2020 Arts Extravaganza - coming in Term 4! We are very excited to announce that our 2020 Arts Extravaganza is com-ing to the World Theatre (COVID restrictions permitting) on Friday 4th Oc-tober. Students from all facets of the Arts can’t wait to entertain you with dancing, singing, music, drama and even a fashion show. Watch this space for updates on how the show is coming along… and where you can book your tickets! A-Team dress up for Indigenous Literacy We love any excuse to dress up in the Arts Department, and when we can support an excellent cause such as the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, we go all out! Check out our tribute to the Little Miss series of books by Roger Hargreaves. Of course there’s always one in every group who tries to up-stage the others - can you guess who this is in our department?

Inter-School Sport Term 3 has seen the commencement again of Inter-School Sport. The first few weeks started with the 1st and 2nd softball competitions. Well done to all the girls who participated and played some well-fought games. The 1st team finished in 3rd place and the 2nds team finished in 2nd place. A big thank you to Mr Brad Adams, Mrs Weston and Ms Thomson for coaching and managing our teams.

For the final weeks of Term 3 we have our Netball and Rugby League teams competing in the Inter-School com-petition. This year will see a reduced draw with each school on playing each other once and the top 2 teams then competing in a final on Monday 7th September.

Round 1 was our home games against BTC with all Netball and Rugby League teams coming away victorious. This week we take on State High in our only away games. The final round will be played in week 7 where we will host Columba Catholic College. Good luck to all our teams for the coming weeks.

Junior School Tina Akers Head of Junior School Free Dress Day Is there anything better than chil-dren laughing and their eyes spar-kling with joy and wonder? The re-cent Free Dress day brought the students and staff moments of sur-prise, laughter and light-hearted joy. The students looked amazing. Thank you to parents and guardi-ans for the time spent preparing your child’s costumes. It was a very successful dress-up day.

A donation of $500 was well re-ceived by Mrs Tamika Mihill and Tiffany Hopkins from Prospect Community Services in Charters Towers. This donation will be used to support the Soup Kitchen which provides for members of our com-munity who are less fortunate than most, and organised through the Prospect’s Emergency Relief Program.

National Science Week - Lego Competition Over the last few weeks, 23 Junior School students from Year 4, 5 and 6 gave up their lunch play to learn how to use the LEGO WeDo 2.0 kit. This kit is a Lego robot that the students use to build and program using coding, to solve re-al world problems. Mrs Dickson set challenges requiring teams of four or five students to collectively apply their Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) knowledge and skills.

A team of five students who showed skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving were selected to represent All Souls St Gabriels School at the Townsville Junior School LEGO Competition, hosted by Townsville Grammar School on Wednesday, 19 August. Tio Chong (Year 6), Roary Polke-vaz, Isabella Maff, (Year 5) Judith Koglkia and Matilda Twine (Year 4) competed against 12 other teams from across the region.

Working collaboratively, they set about solving a challenging prob-lem that required them to design, build and code a LEGO construc-tion. Congratulations on placing third and being awarded the “Most Innovative and Creative” design of the competition. Thank you Mrs Dickson for extending this oppor-tunity to the Junior School stu-dents.

Year 6 Camp The cancellation of this year’s trip to Canberra has been extremely disappointing for Year 6 students. In this year of uncertainty and un-precedented changes, it is very im-portant for our Year 6 students to share something special together. We have been able to secure dates (Week 2, Term 4) for our Year 6 students to enjoy an itinerary packed with challenging and edu-cational outdoor experiences at Mungalli Falls. Accompanied by Mr Turner, Miss Browne and Mrs Wes-ton, the trip to Mungalli Falls Out-door Education Centre will provide an opportunity for the students to enjoy a variety of nature based, in-teractive and curriculum based learning, in addition to a variety of team-building activities lead by qualified instructors.

Father’s Day Raffle Thank you to Towers Gas and Camping, Repco, Towers Power Equipment, Hollimans Hardware, Home Hardware and Titley’s, who have provided some wonderful prizes for this year’s JSSG Father’s Day Raffle.

More tickets are available from the Junior School Office and Admin. The raffle will be drawn at Assem-bly on Friday 4 September.

On behalf of the Junior School Support Group, (sub-committee of ASSG P & F) thank you for your continued support.

Spirit of Partnership Respect, responsibility, honesty, tolerance and doing your personal best are the values reflected throughout our School. We appre-ciate the important role the wider community plays in the progress of our students and are always grate-ful for the feedback we receive. Achievement is very important and, as a school community, we are all striving to be the best we can be in all that we do. As a School community we are proud of our students’ achievements. Thank you for your support and advocacy for our School.

From the Dorms

Term 3 is living up to its reputation of being an extremely busy time in our school calendar. If a busy boarder is a happy boarder then I feel we’re doing ok at the moment. By the time this edition goes to print, we’ll be heading into week 7 and the countdown until September holidays will be on.

It’s been a mixed year for our Sen-iors, but they’re feeling quite pleased with themselves this week, after helping our school to a huge win at the annual Inter-School Ath-letics. The carnival was hosted by Columba Catholic College this year, and despite lots of restrictions being in place, it proved to be a great couple of days for our students es-pecially the Year 12s who were the only spectators allowed at the carni-val. Our school did themselves very proud yet again! The Age Champion positions (through all age groups) were consistently battled out be-tween ASSG kids, leaving other schools in our dust! We have some very talented athletes in our little community, and it’s a proud mo-ment for them to be acknowledged for their dedication and commit-ment.

Congratulations to all our competi-tors, Age Champions, Runners Up, coaches, staff members, Captains for 2020: Jarrod Clark and Luka Hall and to all our year 12 seniors who cheered their hearts out supporting our athletes. You guys did a great job and brought home a well-deserved win!

Our school rugby league teams fi-nally got on the field in under 13s, 15s and Firsts last week. All three

teams played BTC here at Souls with the Firsts kicking off at 6:00pm which meant our boarders were able to skip prep and watch the game. It is still a terrific sight seeing our Firsts playing under lights on the O’Keeffe. I am sure there will be results in this newslet-ter but all three teams had com-fortable wins and are looking for-ward to High School this week.

Our Netball girls only have a cou-ple of games left in their school and club seasons and they should also be extremely proud of their efforts. Between all their training sessions and games they’re on fire and revelling in the opportunity to be back on the courts. They too have won some, lost some and walked away with battle wounds! But the kids love it and seem to wear their bumps and bruises with pride as they represent ASSG.

The club rugby league and union competitions are edging closer to their respective Grand Finals so we will have details of who is in and out in our next addition.

While on the football topic we would also like to take this oppor-tunity to thank Sister Kate McCart-ney and Sister Terri Hensler for consistently going above and be-yond for our football and netball kids. These seasons are not their favourites, but they’re always on call to tend all the battle wounds. Thank you Kate and Terri.

Our second round of school photos took place in early August. This in-cluded all dormitory photos, sport-ing groups, our school cattle and horse clubs and other extra-curricular groups. It’s always very humbling to see how many of our

boarders are descendants of past students. This year we had a total of 167 students (boarders and day students) representing their fami-ly’s ties to the history of our school. Again, it proves that ASSG really is a family tradition in itself.

As we tick over the halfway point of the term, our kids are feeling the pressures of assignment due dates and exam block prepara-tions. As always, please let your dormitory supervisor know if you have any concerns regarding your sons and daughters. Until next time, take care. Girls Boarding: Alban, Becket & Chad… Girls boarding joined forces again last fortnight when Green dorm hosted another “Girls Night In”, and it was fantastic to see every-one participating. The girls had a blast at the make-up and hair sta-tions – putting into practise their make-up and hair artistry and re-vealing some very talented beauti-cians amongst us! It was fantastic to see all three dorms unite and enjoy themselves again. They then enjoyed ice-cream with hot fudge brownies and strawberries for des-sert.

Alban highlights We’d like to congratulate Alban girl, Kaytarnia Castors, for repre-senting Charters Towers at the North Queensland Netball Trials in Townsville recently. Well done KayKay! Thanks to Jasmine El-liott and Ka-sey Musk for creating the beautiful flo-ral arrange-ments for Chapel every week. Your bouquets are lovely and we’re very grateful that you give up your spare time to make them for us. Congratulations to our U14 Bul-lettes Rugby Union girls who had just come from a win in this pic-ture. They’re a fantastic team and one to watch in future seasons!

Brandy Corlis, Erin Blennerhassett, Olivia Haines, Bella Whiting,

Layla Bailey & Kayla Pedersen Tosha, Shakiah & Tamea organised a surprise get-together for some of the younger girls n Alban Dorm, which included Kaytarnia, Tameira, Sajida and Trezjhan. They decorat-ed Tosha’s bay with balloons, glit-ter and fairy lights, had some good music on and ordered Red Rooster and Pizza for them. Thank you Tosha, for bringing all the girls to-gether – they loved it!

Becket highlights The Inter-School Athletics Carnival is done and dusted for 2020 and lots of our girls should be really proud of their efforts. Storm Cross-land and Darnelle Steedman braved the chilly early mornings to go to their training sessions - well done girls while Annabel Ruyg and Madison Simms gave up their lunch breaks on top of their other train-ings to practice with their relay teams. All the work paid off be-cause ASSG walked away winners of the 2020 Interschool Athletics Carnival.

The girls continue to be busy on the weekends with all the club sports. Mavis Wapau, Maria Whap, Olive Whap and Storm Crossland are playing for the Miners Rugby League team each weekend. It was a home game for them last week-end and they had a well-deserved win! Well done girls!

Annabel Ruyg and Erin Wilkinson are our ‘Bullettes’ Rug-by Union girls.

Friday 14th was Show Holiday and a long weekend, with many of our girls taking the op-portunity to head home. It was still a fun weekend for the girls in dorms, as they enjoyed an outing to the Co-lumba School Fete, a few late movies nights and Lights on O’Keeffe.

A big welcome back to Chloe Wolfenden, who has been at home nursing a severely infected foot for the last six weeks. Chloe you were greatly missed and it’s wonderful to have you back!

Free dress day saw students dress-ing as a book or TV character. There were many great disguises including this group of The Wiggles by Brandy Corlis, Erin Blenner-hassett, Olivia Wilkinson and Ana-bel Ruyg.

Chad highlights Our Seniors helped organize a triv-ia night for all 3 girls’ dorms last Saturday night. Sarah, Sophie, Da-kota, Jemma, Zoe and Anastacia hosted a great night of fun and good food. They came up with some fantastic questions that real-ly tested everyone’s knowledge. Thanks girls, for bringing everyone together for an entertaining even-ing!

Athletics has been run and won with lots of Chad girls helping to achieve this win. School sport is in full swing with the dorm almost emptying out each afternoon for training and club commitments. It is about this time in the term, when tiredness and the ‘little things’ get to kids. Things that normally don’t worry them most of the time, can become an issue causing angst and problems in their life. We will continue to work with them but if you notice any is-sues that they have, please let us know and we will do our best to deal with them.

Ramsay highlights As we progress through this term the boys have kept up their good spirits with interesting and fun ways to entertain themselves. Our fire pit has been a hit on the cold nights and is a great way for eve-ryone to talk out there concerns and interests in a relaxed atmos-phere.

The younger boys are still con-structing their mattress cubbies in the junior wing, with some very in-teresting and imaginative designs.

I feel the boys have really come together this term with everyone happy and getting along better than ever. Tristan Lathwell has been a stand out for me with his happy-go-lucky attitude and his ability to get along with everyone in the dormitory, whether they want to or not.

Jalen Barry and David Gaidan have been a fun pair in the Year nine group. Their constant swipes at each other and myself make every-one around them laugh out loud at their antics.

The games of pool have continued with much enthusiasm this term. I feel though this is because they’re all trying to get a win over me which, just for the record, they haven’t achieved yet!

The boys are ecstatic with the re-turn of school rugby league. We have very high numbers signed up to play, and a special mention has to go to Max Smith. Maxie put his hand up to play, and for everyone that knows Max, this is a big deal for him. He played his first game recently and loved every minute, with the boys encouraging him all the way.

Ramsay Dorm is going from strength to strength and it’s all down to the positive attitude of the boys this term. I’m confident this will continue to the end of term. Thanks boys.

Feetham highlights We are now past the half way point of the term and we have been going flat out here in Feeth-am. The boys have been keeping very busy and are enjoying the op-portunity to be back playing sports.

It was great to see the O’Keeffe lights back on on a Wednesday night for the football. The whole school was able to go and support our netball girls and our younger football teams after school and then come back and watch the Firsts under lights. The Firsts team got ready here in Feetham dorm and there was a real buzz in the air as the little fellas all got to watch the Firsts boys prepare for their game. I would like to thank Sam Vaughan and Clancy Stretton for their help on the score board for the night.

We have been doing a battle of the wings for the past couple of weeks with the objective being that the boys have to impress me with how clean their bays and their wing are every day. So far the tidiest wing goes to the mighty year 9 boys and the cleanest bay title goes to two boys this time - Year 9 boy James Sharp-Callaghan, and Year 12 Jar-rod Clark. These two definitely have the cleanest bays in the dorm. Watch this space for who gets the title next week.

I would especially like to congratu-late Jarrod Clark on his appoint-ment as 2020 Athletics Captain and the way in which he carried out his role and represented our school. Jarrod should be very proud of his personal achievements as well as that of the team accomplished at the carnival last week.

Finally, thanks to all the mighty Feetham lads - let’s keep up the good work and finish the term off strong.

Page highlights It has been business as usual in Page Dormitory for the last few weeks. The boys are back into their routine of afternoon training and playing club sport on the week-ends. Last Tuesday evening saw the commencement of Interschool rug-by league and the boarders got a night of spectating. The 1sts were the highlight of the day winning in a convincing display of skill. The biggest event for the dormitory has been the pool competition or-ganized by Michael. We are up to the 3rd round and we have Kevin Mutton re-entering as a wildcard after being eliminated easily in the first round. Isaiah and Rhythm have already progressed through, with Kevin vs Michael and Clinton vs Doug left to complete the round. It has generated a lot of interest within the dorm and will definitely be something we do again.
