Theday's top lot was hip 172, a Sinndar (Ire) half-sister to2002 G1 1000 Guineas third Alasha (Ire) (Barathea{Ire}). AShe is for an owner who has a two-year-old with meat the moment and was looking for a filly who couldbecome a foundation mare,@ said Knight. AWe tried for afew at Part One of the October Sale, but it was verytough there and this was the only one on our list today. She will always have residual value and she was areally nice, athletic filly. I've got about 20 yearlings thisyear, including some very nice ones from Keeneland.Although I'll have about 40 in training next year, thesame number as this season, the quality has been im-proving all the time.@ A Mizzen Mast half-brother to Group 1-placed Millie'sQuest (Quest For Fame {GB}) was bought by Dubai-based owner Jaber Abdullah--one of the RabbahBloodstock nominees--through agent Gill Richardson for

140,000gns. The JohnTroy-consigned colt, cataloguedas hip 191, had been withdrawnfrom Part One of Tattersalls' Oc-tober Yearling Sale. AHe was a lovely, athletichorse," said Richardson. Wariness about the unknown is a natural reaction inmany areas of life, and the breeding community is noexception. Today=s American breeders much prefer thefamiliar, unlike their predecessors who often reaped richrewards from embracing imported stallions with openarms. Consequently the majority of imported horses--especially those with somewhat unfamiliar bloodlines--are likely to face an uphill struggle to win support fromcommercial breeders, even if they have established theirmerit on American tracks.

Gaining acceptance can be even harder for horsesfrom South America. The only true exception to thisrule that I can think of is the outstanding Argentinechampion Forli, who enjoyed the benefit of being basedat Claiborne. But Lord at War, another import fromArgentina, demands an honorable mention after buildinga very respectable record as a stallion and an evenbetter record as a broodmare sire. When Wishful Tom-cat took the GIII Discovery H. three days ago, he be-came the fifth graded stakes winner of the year forLord at War=s daughters. Along with the Breeders= CupClassic hero Raven=s Pass, The Niagara Queen, BossLafitte and Queen of the Catsle, Wishful Tomcat is oneof nine stakes winners among the 2008 runners pro-duced by 115 daughters of the former Wimborne Farmstallion. Raven=s Pass is the sixth Grade I winner with a Lordat War dam, following War Emblem, Purim, Citronnade,Tali=sluckybusride and No Matter What, the last-namednow being the dam of Rainbow View, who last weeklanded the Cartier Award for two-year-old filly. Lord at War, like Forli before him, was a champion inhis native Argentina, where he was unbeaten in threestarts at around a mile. Transferred to California, hecontinued to be hard to beat and he won half of his 14starts for Charlie Whittingham. Among his notabledisplays at four was his victory in the GIII Citation H.,in which he led throughout to set a track record of1:50.60 for a mile and an eighth. Then, at five, hescored a Grade I double in the San Antonio and SantaAnita H. under Willie Shoemaker. Lord at War=s mainweapons were speed and determination, and his speedhad been very apparent in his preparation for the Cita-tion H. A seven-furlong work on turf produced a time of1:21.60 a week before the race. Messrs Kilroe, Hale and Robbins allotted Lord at War124 on the 1985 Blood-Horse Free Handicap for OlderMales, just two pounds below the top-rankedPrecisionist. Unfortunately--for many breeders--thepower of his performances must have been muted tosome extent by his pedigree. Cont. p5

(Pedigree Insights cont. from p4)

Lord at War=s bloodlines were largely European, de-spite his birthplace, as he was a son of General. Gen-eral=s main claim to fame was that he was a FrenchGroup 3 winner by the brilliant Brigadier Gerard, but hehad earned little more than $17,000 in 12 Americanstarts before heading for Argentina. This was hardly likely to endear Lord at War to thelocals when he originally retired to Walmac Internationalin Kentucky in 1986. Lord at War later moved to Dianeand Peter Perkins=s Wimborne Farm. To make matters worse, he failed to sire a stakeswinner in his small first crop and he also seemed to beless than fully fertile, judging by American Jockey Clubfigures. For example, he achieved only 39 percent livefoals to mares covered in his second season and 50percent in his sixth. His career ended at the age of 18in 1998, when he had to be destroyed several weeksafter injuring a hind leg in a breeding-shed accident. Hisfee at the time was $20,000. At the time, his death didn=t appear to be a significantloss to the industry but his reputation was to growconsiderably, to the extent that his final figures stoodat 47 stakes winners from 381 named foals (12 per-cent). Twenty-one of the 47 became graded winners(an admirable 5.5 percent). At the end of 2001, heranked as high as second (behind Danzig) on the APEXtable of leading sires by AABC@ runners index and sixthbehind A.P. Indy, Danzig, Storm Cat, Nureyev andSadler=s Wells on the APEX table of leading sires by AA@runners index. So Lord at War has shown it can be done, and thereseems to be a chance that another Argentinian import,Candy Ride, could also make the grade, given sufficientchances. The parallels with Lord at War are quite pronounced.Candy Ride, too, became a champion miler in his home-land, and he too capped an unbeaten three-race careerwith an eight-length victory in the G1 Clasico JoaquinS. de Anchorena. His display there prompted JohnSikura to suggest that Candy Ride was the best Argen-tine import since Forli.

California also became Candy Ride=s destination andhe too proved good enough to break a track record andto become a Grade I winner. He reached those land-marks simultaneously in the 2003 Pacific Classic, where he proved much too good for the likes ofMedaglia d=Oro, Fleetstreet Dancer and MilwaukeeBrew. His Beyer figure was a striking 123. At thatstage Candy Ride=s record stood at a perfect six for six,but he sidestepped the 2003 Breeders= Cup Classic andnever raced again, despite being kept in training in2004. Unlike Lord at War=s, Candy Ride=s pedigree includesbloodlines which are far from unknown to Americanbreeders. For a start, his sire Ride the Rails was anAmerican-raced grandson of Fappiano. Kept busy attwo, Ride the Rails won three of his eight starts, includ-ing a stakes race, and received 111 on the ExperimentalFree Handicap. This well-bred son of Cryptoclearancewas also a good third to Dehere and Go for Gin in theGII Foutain of Youth and second to Holy Bull in the GIFlorida Derby. Candy Ride=s broodmare sire, Candy Stripes, has alsobecome a familiar name, thanks to the American ex-ploits of such as Invasor, Leroidesanimaux, Differentand Lundy=s Liability. Although a blank year prior to retiring to stud canrepresent a substantial setback, it hasn=t stopped CandyRide making an eye-catching start with a crop sired at afee of only $10,000. No other freshman sire has siredmore graded winners than the Hill >n= Dale stallion(though Lion Heart and Birdstone have matched his tallyof two). Evita Argentina got him off the mark with hervictory in the GIII Sorrento S. in the summer and shewas in the winner=s circle again nine days ago after theMoccasin S. These victories came on synthetic sur-faces, as did the Real Quiet S. success of Candy Ride=sson Chocolate Candy. However, Candy Ride=s secondgraded winner, Capt. Candyman Can, scored on tradi-tional dirt when he took the GIII Iroquois S., and don=tbe surprised if Candy Ride were to add a turf stakeswinner to his total. His victory in the GII American H.came on turf, so he is well qualified to sire winners onall surfaces.
