We have well and truly hit the floor running already this term. It’s a jam packed calendar starting off with our Year 11 students sitting their Mock exams and we wish them the very best over the next couple of weeks.

Before Christmas, we conducted a Parent Questionnaire and are very pleased to have had nearly 600 responses from across all year groups, including over 500 free text comments.

We are now analysing the detail behind the results and would like to take this opportunity to share some of the top level feedback provided.

It’s great to see such a range of positive feedback, and to be able to get a better understanding of what’s important to our parents, as well as to receive comments on areas that some parents would like to see improved or developed. We are currently reviewing the school’s ‘Vision and Values’ and will build in this feedback to our discussions and work on this. We will also now begin to work through the other sections and will give some more feedback later this term.

Hello and Welcome! We have some new faces around school this week; we welcome three new members of staff to IGS this term: Mrs Beverley Scott, Mr Jamie Gutch and Mrs Lisa Capstick.

Beverley joins us as an Art teacher (replacing Mrs Steph Barton who left at Christmas and has started a new job at St Johns’ Fisher, Harrogate), she has previously worked at Settle College and will teach Art for the next 2 terms.

We also welcome our 2 new Lead Practitioners, Jamie Gutch and Lisa Capstick. Jamie has come to us from Harrogate Grammar and has a specialism in MFL and has previously held the position of Faculty Leader at Harrogate Grammar School. Lisa has a specialism in English and joins us from Minsthorpe Academy where she was Leading Practitioner and English teacher. These are two newly created positions within school and will drive improvements in the quality of learning and teaching across the curriculum so that it is consistently outstanding. Jamie and Lisa will work closely with a wide range of individual teachers, as they continuously develop their practice, as well as leading and delivering whole school professional training.

New Year 7 Leader We are delighted to inform you that from this week Jess Watson will take up the post of Year 7 Leader, replacing Assistant Headteacher Chris Washington, whose role as a member of the school's Leadership Team has changed somewhat in recent weeks.

Both Jess and Chris will be working closely with each other over the next few weeks and months. This is to ensure a smooth transition and to further develop the opportunities that post 16 iLeaders have to support the learning and personal development of younger students.

Ilkley and the Great War The Yorkshire spa town of Ilkley is a popular tourist destination famous for its moor and literature festival. It is less well known that Ilkley is a town with a rich military history. By 1914, army camps were a familiar sight along the River Wharfe. With the arrival of Belgian refugees, wounded soldiers and regiments from Leeds, many of the hotels and halls were adapted for new purposes. The war affected everybody through absence or loss of loved ones and changing political and social circumstances.

While those at home reacted to the challenges of this momentous time, Wharfedale men served in all of the major battles on the Western Front. Among these men were the Ilkley Territorials, a Howitzer Battery who served together throughout the war and kept detailed diaries of their experiences.

Now a new book has been published - Ilkley and the Great War - in which authors Caroline Brown and Mark Hunnebell document the impact the First World War had on Ilkley and its residents using old photographs, newspaper articles and heartfelt diary entries.

Caroline, a librarian and author, said the inspiration for the new book came from a project to research names on a Roll of Honour with teachers and students from Ilkley Grammar School to mark the Centenary of the First World War using resources in the Ilkley library. The authors make acknowledgements to Alison Harrison (IGS Librarian) and Jeff Pancott (History) for their contributions to the book.

Musical Soiree Students from Year 12 delighted their audience on Monday 15th December with their musical talents. Lucy Carter (12JLI) organised a concert in aid of Medicins Sans Frontieres and raised over £325. The hall was laid out cabaret style, with audience members sat at tables, whilst enjoying refreshments. The audience started with Lucy describing how the money raised would be used and information about the charity and the work they do in East Africa, at the forefront of many minds with the recent Ebola crisis.

The audience were then treated to IGS Saxophone Quartet: Iso Hirst, Samuel Shaw, Ivan Horoshenkov and Top Hepworth playing ‘Santa Baby’ and ‘Frosty the Snowman’. Jo Ruddock and Harri Pitches then sang together, followed by Jo playing Mozart's Sonata in C and performing ‘Read All About It’. Tom Hepworth provided a saxophone solo with his version of ‘Aria’ followed by Lucy Carter singing ‘Stay With Me’ and ‘La Vien Rose’ alongside Jo Ruddock and Sam Button. The evening finished off with a solo of ‘Over The Rainbow’ performed by Kate Jennings.

The students who organised the event expressed their thanks to Miss Ramrattan and Miss Watson for their support. Requests have already been made for a follow up concert in the summer, so watch this space!

Well done to Hannah Wellock (10BJS) who took part in a Cadet Winton fencing competition at Millfield School, Somerset as part of the Yorkshire women's under 17 épée team on the 13th/14th December. The Yorkshire squad came 8th as a team, individually Hannah performed well in her poules (winning 5 and losing 4); all the scoring was then combined to provide a team result.

Year 7 Gifted and Talented Maths Christmas Constructions A selection of our gifted and talented mathematicians in Year 7 gathered to apply their mathematical skills to create some Christmas constructions. We saw lots of compass skills and geometrical knowledge as students accurately constructed and folded Christmas stars; they all produced some fantastic work. There were even reports of some students going home, creating more and decorating their tree with them.

Well done and thank you to our Christmas choir and saxophone quartet who entertained the rotary club at the Craiglands Hotel on Tuesday 16th December with Christmas music and carols. What a wonderfully festive way to round off the last week before Christmas.

Thank you and well done to our Post 16 volunteers who delivered Christmas parcels with Ilkley Rotary just before the Christmas Holidays.

12 Pipers Piping! Well done to Callum Carslaw who enjoyed a fantastic opportunity over the Christmas holidays. Callum was one of the pipers who played during the New Year’s Eve ‘Auld Lang Syne Race’. The pipers have traditionally piped the runners out and back in for many years. Alistair Brownlee won the race with Jonny Brownlee third...IGS Head of MFL, Linda Carey, was a little further behind! The photo (courtesy of Woodentops) shows Callum and Alistair Brownlee.

Well done to our Year 8 rugby team who played Whitcliffe Mount School on Wednesday in the Yorkshire Cup. It was a tight match with impressive play from the Year 8 squad who secured a victory with the final score ending 24-30. The team are now through to the quarter finals of the Yorkshire Cup—good luck boys!

Well played to our U14B netball team who played in the Emerging Schools’ Netball League on Wednesday night. They competed against some stiff opposition and were unlucky not to qualify for the League Finals. Ellie Cooper (9ALC) and Imogen Brodaty (9GPS) have provided the match report.

The girls showed a fantastic display of teamwork in the cold

and rainy weather, battling the elements as well as the

opposition! The score against University Academy Keighley

(UAK) was 5-1 to UAK with Aisling O'Neill (9JP) crowned player

of the match.

The Year 9s were not put off by the defeat or the worsening

weather and carried on to play St Joseph's. Becky Burnett

(9MEK) netted an amazing long distance shot. However, despite

improved play by the Ilkley girls, in the end, the match

ended 11-1 to a very strong St Joseph's team, who will now go

on to the League Finals.

Dining in Style! The school is applying to the Government Condition Improvement fund and as part of the bid plans have been drawn up and submitted to Bradford Council for planning approval for changes to our current dining areas. Harrogate based SSA Architects Ltd have submitted plans to enclose the existing outside courtyard area with a new glazed roof and create a mezzanine floor to provide additional dining space.

The plan is to create a ‘dining hub’ increasing capacity to accommodate all students, ensuring you all have access to dining facilities. It is also hoped that enclosing the courtyard will reduce the maintenance burden on the school by protecting part of the building from the elements.

Have a look at the images below...we think it’s going to look fantastic so fingers crossed that our bid is successful!

Safer Internet Day 2015 Safer Internet Day 2015 will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 10th February with the slogan ‘Let’s create a better internet together’. Co-ordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the celebration sees hundreds of organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. Globally, Safer Internet Day is celebrated in over a hundred countries, coordinated by the joint Insafe/INHOPE network, with the support of the European Commission, and 31 national Safer Internet Centres across Europe. The day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet. Ultimately, a better internet is up to all of us!

How well do you know your digital footprint? What is a digital footprint? Literally everything you do online (your online activity) is recorded on the internet. It is possible for people to look at this months or even years later. Some forms of this online activity can be easily found or viewed by others for example posts on social networking sites or through a Google search. Most of your online activity will be private, however, it may be accessible to others such as employees in the future or professionals who may wish to investigate your online activity. How to have a good digital footprint We have reminded students this week that whenever they put any images or text out on the internet, e.g. though Facebook or social media, they are presenting an image to the outside world about themself. Any offensive or abusive comments about anyone else are easily discovered. Serious offensive behaviour towards others online could result in trouble with the police.

Want to know what your digital footprint looks like?

Take the quiz (Lisa Nielson: The Innovative Educator) on the next page

and see what it says about you.

Can You Help Your Child With The 'Shifty Fifty' Spelling Challenge Bosses and employers often lament the poor spelling of youngsters today. This isn't usually due to an overreliance on spell checkers or laziness, but because the rules for English spelling are often quite complicated, and then have many exceptions. Although many IGS students are good at spelling, there are a number of common errors which keep cropping up. Interestingly, the same words are often misspelt by adults too!

The Shifty Fifty is a list of the most commonly misspelt words by both adults and students. This half term the Shifty Fifty Spelling Challenge is to learn all these words in blocks of ten per week. The English Department will be promoting this in lessons and we hope there may be time in tutor periods as well. In the final week of half term, we will hold a spelling bee competition for any student who wants to be tested on the full shifty fifty.

The first ten are listed below. Good luck!

1. accommodation 2. appearance 3. beautiful 4. because 5. beginning

6. believe 7. business 8. ceiling 9. conscience 10. decided
