In par with the revised guidelines given by NAAC, every teacher has to be aware of
instructional goals to meet the needs of the students to suit their academic/career requirements.
There is a need to accompany these new goals with more authentic assessment techniques to
evaluate progress towards these goals. The revised definition of literacy (as quoted by Gal’s
Literacy Model) is ‘The Ability to Interpret, Critically Evaluate and Communicate’. To assist
the students to attain this objective (as stated by Gal) the teacher should focus on two broad
interrelated components as part of their teaching skills:
1. Knowledge component which consist of five cognitive elements: literacy skills,
knowledge of the data, calculative knowledge, context knowledge and critical questions.
2. Dispositional component which consists of three related but distinct concepts namely:
Critical stance, Beliefs and Attitudes.
