LAKES LECTURERS BRING IT ALL INTO PERSPECTIVE Business Tutor JOHN TREMBLE “My first job was a Trainee Chartered Accountant, for a local firm of accountants. I spent 3 years as an accountant before moving to teaching at the college where I have been ever since. I feel that industry experience is essential for students to be eminently more employable and together with my students I have undertaken a wide range of business projects in conjunction with Allerdale Borough Council, West Cumberland Hospital and several small businesses.”

Engineering Tutor NIC BURTON “I have a real passion for engineering and have worked across the industry from pipe fitting to heavy industry maintenance to production engineering, electrical engineering and industrial management. Now I have transferred that passion to teaching. If you come to one of my classes don’t be surprised if you learn about the principles of kinetic energy through a game of tennis!”

Sport Science Tutor MARC SkILLEN “I left school at 16 and went straight into the British Army as an infantry solider. During the four years I was there I completed six month tours of both Bosnia and kosovo, trained as a mortar man and as a Physical Training Instructor. After four years in the army I went on to complete a Sport and Exercise Science Degree. It’s great to pass this first hand knowledge on to students and make a real difference in their chances of getting a job in the health and leisure industry”

MONEY DOESN’T hAVE

TO BE AN ISSUE

Page 11: HE Prospectus

DON’T LET MONEYSTOP YOU HELP WITH GRANTS, LOANS, BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Money is likely to be a concern for most people when considering a university education. This is one of our main concerns, too, because if you’re worried then you can’t get the most out of your course. There are lots of ways in which we can help you. Firstly, you don’t have to worry about paying course fees up front because they can be repaid later once the course is finished and your career’s up and running.

Secondly, grants and student loans are available even if you are employed. You can work and still get a maintenance grant worth up to £2906 per annum, as well as a student loan. As long as you apply in time you should find the money going into your account at the start of each term (when you need it most).

Student loans don’t need to be repaid until you are working and earning over £15,000 per year. Even then, repayment is at a very reasonable rate. Maintenance grants don’t have to be repaid, and are available to any student from a household that earns less than £50,020 per year.

Bursaries and scholarships can also be offered from your college if you are a full time undergraduate student, depending on your needs and the college’s financial resources. Best of all, you don’t have to give up work to do higher education courses. Even if you reduce your hours you can still get some grant money, which will take the weight off your shoulders and let you live comfortably while you are doing your higher education courses.
