Happy Easter! One of my fondest memories of Easter comes from my seminary days as we gathered in the chap-el to Easter Vespers. That beau ful Gregorian chant sung as the an phon for the Magnificent has long remained in my mind and heart: “And very early in the morning a er the Sabbath, they came to the tomb at sunrise, Alleluia!” In John’s account today, Mary of Magdala comes to the tomb and finds it empty. But, as yet, there is no angel, no Gardener-Lord to explain the mystery. She runs off to Peter and John with this troubling news! Now Peter and John are running to the tomb, “hoping that their eyes will tell them more than their hearts can pres-ently understand.” The emp ness of the tomb con-tains truth itself, for those who believe. And Peter and John do. In that silent place, they found faith! We are all to be messengers of new and risen life! So, bring the message of life to someone who needs to know it through you: visit someone homebound, comfort a friend who may be darkened by grief, for-give a trespass against you. Jesus is Risen! Pro-claim this grace from the roo ops! This has truly been a beau ful and meaningful week for all of us! A er the Lent of fas ng, we now enter the Easter Season—fi y days ll Pentecost—fi y days of feas ng! We especially congratulate all who at the Easter Vigil entered the Church through Bap sm, Confirma on and First Eucharist. We wel-come too our brothers and sisters who made a Pro-fession of Faith in the Catholic Church. As we gaze upon the Paschal Candle, the Light of Christ, we know that Christ has sca ered the darkness and set us on fire proclaiming the new life we have in Jesus! On behalf the friars and the staff, I wish all you a very blessed and Happy Easter!

Love,

….We prayed, fasted and gave alms — and now we celebrate Easter Joy! You changed lives this Lent, and CRS Rice Bowl says thank you for your contribu-

ons! ...because of your generous monetary and food do-na ons, our parish was able to provide a boun ful Easter Food Basket to over 200 under privileged families. Our parish and these families are touched by our kindness; many blessings! ...to all the Friars, the staff and to the hundreds of ministers for the outstanding Holy Week and Easter we enjoyed. We were moved from the celebra on of Jesus entering Jerusalem with palms, through the Last Supper, the Passion, the Crucifixion, and through to the joy of the Resurrec on. These cele-bra ons were made alive for us through sound, mu-sic, color, symbols, light, darkness, scripture, liturgy, sacraments, flowers, art, and prayers, all bound to-gether by the Spirit.

The reading from the Acts of the Apostles re-minds us that we, too, bear witness to the risen Lord. The presence of Christ is within us, making us new, transforming us, turning us into stewards of the Good News. There is no more me for holding grudges, disliking others, seeking vengeance, maintaining old prejudices, toler-a ng bias. We are Christ’s joy and instruments of his peace. Our world is reordered. Reflect on how we are called to let Christ’s forgiveness, reconcilia on and love permeate our lives. We are Easter people. Re-joice! He is risen! Alleluia!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Easter is nearly three weeks later this year than last. Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calcula ng the date was set by the Emperor Con-stan ne in 325. The decision ended a very bi er contro-versy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jew-ish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it a er the Passover was complete, on the Sunday a er the first full moon of spring me. The ecclesias cal rules do not exactly connect with the astronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose Sunday. The tradi onal rule is that Easter is the first Sunday a er the first ecclesi-as cal full moon that occurs on or a er the vernal equi-nox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles between March 22 and April 25. The actual tables and methods for compu ng the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle varia ons and mind-bending excep ons and charts with “golden num-bers,” “dominical le ers,” and “epacts” measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesias cal calcula ons ac-tually overrode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Chris ans to combine their celebra ons, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. In principle, the Catho-lic Church is open to an ecumenical agreement on a fixed date for Easter, but we desire a unanimous decision from the World Council.

8 | PARROQUIA MISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California - 19 de Febrero del 2017

QUERIDOS AMIGOS, ¡Felices Pascuas!

¡Aleluya! ¡Él ha resucitado!
