And I’ve got to say, as pastor, those comments are disheartening to hear. Why? Because every Sunday we say, “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” Yet comments and judgments are made about those visiting us. So do we not mean “no matter who you are”? I don’t think it’s our intention to contradict that phrase, but unfortunately, we do, and we wrestle with how to accept everyone. I think this is one of the biggest questions the church faces today. So, how do we welcome those with disabilities ... mental or physical? Well, for starters, it helps if we all understand that people with disabilities are just people, like you and I. Sure, we may be uncomfortable, but how do you think they feel when they see us treating them as different? We think we have the power to include or exclude, but the reality is that we have been appointed by Jesus to welcome all. And welcome is just another word for inclusive, which means we should include all people in the life of the community of Saint Stephens. We have made our building accessible to all. For those who are hearing impaired, we have the hearing loop. For those who are handicapped, we have the ramp entrance, parking, and the handicap bathrooms by the offices. In recent weeks, we have moved pews and placed them further apart for people who use walkers and/or canes. And for those who are in wheelchairs, we have places on both sides of the church that are next to a half pew for wheelchairs; this way people in wheelchairs can sit with their families and not feel excluded by being in the back of church. The hope for all of these things is to make people feel welcome and included on Sundays and when they come for weddings and funerals and other special services. As you can see, we do an amazing job at making our church accessible to all, but the real call now becomes, as I said earlier, how do we make ourselves inclusive of all, because the church is the people. I have an experience from during the Treasure Sale that I believe will help. September 24, 2019 (Continued on page 2)

Got Yarn? The Prayer Shawl Ministry accepts donations of yarn so they can keep knitting and crocheting! Yarn donations may be dropped off in the church office.

At the Treasure Sale, I saw one of the men that one of those comments was made about. And I talked with him and asked him how he was doing and told him we missed seeing him in worship. Interestingly, Darlene talked to him, too, and said a similar thing: “And I hope we see him again in the sanctuary on a Wednesday or a Sunday.” This is how we can be inclusive of all friends, by reaching out and being an inviting presence to everyone no matter who they are.Perhaps the better question to ask is, who do we become when we become inclusive of all? That’s easy! We become the people God, through Jesus, appointed us to be, like I mentioned this Sunday in my sermon. By becoming who Jesus appointed us to be, we can help each other along and assure ourselves that we are providing the deepest kind of welcome and sense of belonging possible. That’s who we are appointed to be, sisters and brothers!May God bless you and remind you every day that, no matter who you are, you have a place in God’s kingdom.

2nd Annual Oktoberfest in Merrill … Celebrates German HeritageEveryone is invited to the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest celebration this Saturday, September 28, from 2:00-9:00 PM in Normal Park in Merrill. It’s open to the public, with no admission fee. So don your traditional German costumes (tracht and leiderhosen if you have them!) and come out for food, music & dancing, beer, games, and fun for the whole family.

Merrill and outlying areas in north central Wisconsin have a rich German heritage, and this now annual Oktoberfest festival is a great way to celebrate German traditions. Food options will include brats from Geiss’s Meat Service, hot dogs, German potato salad, warm soft pretzels, homemade mac & cheese, and desserts, and, of course, there will be lots of beer! Sawmill Brewing Company’s Oktoberfest and IPA, Sand Creek Hard Lemonade, and soda will be available. (Cash only for concessions.)

There will be music and plenty of room to polka, with music all afternoon and evening by The Jim Pekol Band and the Dan Gruetzmacher Orchestra. And at 5:00 PM, the festival will include something new this year: Pommersche Danz Gruppe (Pomeranian Dancers) of Wausau will perform German folk dances from their native homeland, a German province named Pomerania that was absorbed into Poland and part of Eastern Germany in 1945 at the end of World War II. Wearing authentic costumes and performing a variety of couple and group dances, including the Wadmal, an interpretive dance of a weaving loom, viewers will be drawn in by their lusty, exuberant Pomeranian German style dancing and their boundless energy. You won’t want to miss it!

Plus there will be lawn games like cornhole, ladder golf, washers, lawn Jenga, kubb, and more … with food, music, games, and more … there’s something for the entire family.

It should come as no surprise that Saint Stephens United Church of Christ, itself an historically German church originally known as “Ev. St. Stephan’s Kirche” founded by a group of German immigrants in Merrill, originated this Oktoberfest event. Truth be told, the idea to hold the first Oktoberfest originated over beers at the Sawmill Brewery when the pastor at the time said, “Wouldn’t it be fun if we threw an Oktoberfest for the whole town?” And the rest, as they say, is history … and a fun way to celebrate our area’s German history.

Oktoberfest is a traditional folk festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running 16 to 18 days from mid or late September until the first weekend in October. It began more than 200 years ago in 1810 and is a celebration of the Bavarian German culture. Areas of the world rich in German heritage (Wisconsin being among them) have adopted Oktoberfest celebrations of their own to continue to celebrate their German heritage.

Mark your calendar and plan to bring the family to celebrate Merrill’s Oktoberfest! If you’d like to help with this annual Oktoberfest event, this year or for the future, you are invited to call 715.536.7322 (ask for Tina).

ARMED INTRUDER SEMINARWe cannot emphasize enough how important it is for volunteers, staff, and leaders in our church to attend the upcoming Armed Intruder Seminar here at the church, sponsored by Church Mutual. If you are a money counter, an office volunteer, an Usher, a member of the Hospitality Corps, on the Church Council, a Sunday School Teacher or a Nursery volunteer, a youth leader, a volunteer for Dinner @ Five, or a volunteer in any capacity, we want you to attend. Not a volunteer? You’re welcome to attend, too!

In the times we live in, preparation and prevention knowledge and information can be the difference between life and death.

We hope that you will never need the knowledge you will glean from this seminar, but in this day and age, we know that it is better to be knowledgeable than to think that bad things never happen to good people. Knowledge is power. Knowledge saves lives.

So ... if you are in one of the groups listed above, please mark your calendar and make this a high priority to attend.

Foster Care Needs Loving Parents ... Like YOU!• Are you able to provide a safe and loving home to a

child in need of a temporary placement?

• Have you ever considered becoming a licensed foster parent or doing respite care for Lincoln County?

To find out more about licensing requirements and/or to request an application, please contact Brenda Rasmussen, MSW, Lincoln County Foster Care Coordinator at 715.539.1328 or [email protected].

Foster parents often need someone to care for their foster children so they can attend trainings or other events not suitable for young children, or when they have a family emergency. Foster parents need someone ready to care for these children for a day or two from time to time. Would you be willing to provide respite care from time to time? Contact Brenda Rasmussen at the above contacts.

WFAPA (Wisconsin Foster and Adoptive Parent Association ) is hosting their fall conference right here in central Wisconsin Friday night, October 4, and Saturday, October 5, at the Grand Lodge Water Park (formerly known as The Lodge at Cedar Creek. To learn more how this organization supports foster parents and provides training, go to wfapa.org.

RADIO STUFF ...

• Did You Know? ... When the radio is unsponsored, that expense must be paid for out of the church’s General Fund. Please consider sponsoring our Radio Ministry. You can sponsor an entire broadcast (and do so in honor or in memory of someone, if you wish) for $190.00. But you can also contribute a smaller amount that will be used to help defray the cost of those unsponsored Sunday broadcasts.

• The October 20 worship service will NOT be broadcast on the radio for reasons of confidentiality. We hope you can join us in person for worship. October 20 is also our Annual Meeting Sunday, so plan to be at church a bit longer than usual! And stay for the 10:30 AM Sunday Brunch!

• Our radio ministry is listened to in homes and nursing homes, and not just by our church members! Our Radio Ministry is a great outreach!

LISTENING TO OUR WORSHIP ON THE RADIO?Tune your dial to 96.3 FM WJMT at 9:00 AM each Sunday for the best reception. It’s the same broadcast as on the AM station, but much better sound quality!

OFFICE CHANGES & MAIL SLOTS MOVEDWe’ve been playing musical offices, but everyone is settled now. Office doors are clearly labeled so you can find us! The main office door will remain closed and locked on Sundays, so Mail Slots have been moved into the copy room across the hall in case you need to drop things off for any of the office staff.

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Impossible Things

“On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them.” Luke 24:1-4 (NRSV)

Personally, I think rationality is overrated, especially when we live with children. I doubt we can motor through a single day as parents unless, as practical theologian Lewis Carroll wrote, we are willing to believe six impossible things before breakfast.

That’s why, when my kid was little, I hit the pause button on logic, especially in the Bible. I taught her the miracles as pure, undiluted facts—no hedging, no tidy revision to accommodate science. Did Jesus walk on water? You betcha. Did Moses bring water from a rock? Absolutely.

When she asked about Easter, I told her that Jesus died on a Friday and was raised from death on a Sunday. I told her about dazzling angels and weeping women and disciples who wouldn’t believe. I told her I didn’t know exactly how it happened, but I believed it happened.

I told her about the resurrection because I wanted her always to be able to find her way back to life from the hundred little deaths she would have to endure during

her lifetime. I wanted her to have a breadcrumb trail to retrace her weary steps from despair to hope. I figured if she had a narrative for resurrection, then she had a fighting chance of survival in a world where death really knows how to deal a blow.

It didn’t hurt her a bit. She grew up to be an imaginative soul who can hold together a huge armful of contradictory truths without breaking a sweat. And she still has that fighting chance.

Prayer

God of Impossible Things: Help us to fret less about impossible things. Amen

BLESSING OF THE BIBLESLast Sunday Rev. Lucas blessed Bibles for students, and registered Sunday School students received an age appropriate Bible of their own to keep! These Bibles will be used throughout their years of Sunday School at Saint Stephens. So parents and Sunday School teachers, if you have not already done so, please write the child’s name in the front of their Bible. And kids, take good care of them, because you’ll be using them for a few years, and plan to bring your Bibles with you to Sunday School each week!
