HD-PE Channel Drain – Introduction
Intesio – for optimum stormwater management
Continuing urban development, a changing climate and the
consequences of intensified rainfall: all are increasingly prominent
issues on the political and environmental agenda. In combination,
they represent a complex need for the most intelligent, effective
solution.
An Overview of the Intesio Channel Drain System
As part of the Intesio water management solutions range, Wavin
have introduced an innovative range of channels, manufactured
from recycled HD-PE.
Available in three ranges, SKIP, VIP and WING, the Intesio
Channel Drainage System can be used with a variety of gratings
to suit your application and loading requirements.
The system is both lightweight and durable, and offers faster
installation on site. The ranges have been independently certified
in accordance with EN 1433.
Intesio channel drainage offers a solution to surface water
transportation for either disposal or re-use, and can be used in
conjunction with other products in the Intesio range to create a
complete water management solution.
Benefits of the System• Broad Portfolio – Wide choice of channels and selection
of gratings for EN 1433 load classes A to F
• Smooth Surface – For enhanced hydraulic performance
and fast surface drainage
• Light yet durable – at least 20 times lighter than systems
using traditional materials
• Low installed cost – “Ready to install”can be installed
with gratings pre-assembled
• Easy to connect – choice of preformed drain outlets
SKIP
SKIP has a low section height. A 20 mm high edge locates
and gives protection to the lightweight grating and provides
a datum for installation of the final surface layer. Channel
and grate combination are available from A15 to C250.
Ideal for; residential areas, sports facilities,
and multi-storey car parks.
VIP
VIP is a multipurpose channel. Like SKIP, the gratings are
located in the channel by a 20 mm high edge. This provides
protection to the grating and a datum for installation of
the final surface layer. Channel and grate combination are
available from A15 to C250.
Ideal for; private car parks, footways
and athletics grounds.
WING
WING is a heavy duty channel with a 25 mm high, 4 mm thick
steel strengthening frame as required by EN1433. It has a
unique anchoring system for the channel designed to withstand
deformation due to shear or torsional stresses. Channel and
grate combination are available from C250 to F900.
Ideal for medium-to-heavy duty uses; exhibition areas,
parking decks, road carriageways, parking areas, service
areas and industrial areas.
The system consists of the following three ranges:

HD-PE Channel Drain - Selection of Channel
The selector will help you to determine which of the 3 ranges in the Intesio Channel Drainage
System is the correct choice for a particular project.
EN 1433 Drainage Channels for Vehicular and Pedestrian Areas states that ‘the appropriate load
class of drainage channel to choose depends upon where the channel is to be installed’.
The type of grating used is the main determining factor in the assignment of a load class.

EN1433 – “Drainage Channels for Vehicular and Pedestrian Areas”
states; ‘The appropriate load class of drainage channel to choose
depends upon where the channel is to be installed.’
Typical places of installation are divided into groups, as listed:
Group 1 (min. class A15) – Areas which can only be used by
pedestrians and pedal cyclists.
Group 2 (min. class B125) – Footways, pedestrian areas and
comparable areas, private car parks or car parking decks.
Group 3 (min. class C250) – Kerb sides (Fig 1) and non-
trafficked areas of hard shoulders and similar.
Group 4 (min. class D400) – Carriageways of roads (including
pedestrian streets), hard shoulders
(Figure 1) and parking areas, for all types of road vehicles.
Group 5 (min. class E600) – Areas subject to heavy wheel loads,
e.g. ports and dock sides.
Group 6 (class F900) – Areas subject to especially high wheel
loads e.g. aircraft pavements.
The standard further states; ‘the manufacturer shall provide
instructions for haunching of drainage channel units and indicate
the dimensions and also the concrete class required and
reinforcement details if any, to meet the load classification of the
product at the place of installation’.
Following are general installation guidelines.

HD-PE Channel Drain - Installation
The standard EN 1433 states; ‘the manufacturer shall provide
instructions for haunching of drainage channel units and indicate
the dimensions and also the concrete class required and
reinforcement details if any, to meet the load classification of the
product at the place of installation’.
The following steps are general installation guidelines only.
Step 1: Excavation
The size of excavation to be made for laying of the channels must
take into account:
• The channel dimension and the discharge outlet pipes
• Adequate space for foundation H and concrete side flanking S.
The foundation and the flanking dimensions for each channel
range are listed separately in the Channel Drain Technical Design
Manual.
Step 2: Foundation
Lay the concrete foundation H up to the height indicated in step
1, taking care to provide the required fall in the drainage line, and
leaving a section incomplete to allow the fitting of the outlet pipe.
For load classes E600 and F900, it is recommended that the
foundation is strengthened with reinforcing rods.
Step 3: Channel and Pipe Installation
Lay the channels starting from the flow outlet and secure them at
the base to prevent them floating and moving out of line during
casting of the concrete flanking. Install the required discharge
outlets and carry out the side flanking up to the maximum height
allowed, as shown.
It is recommended that gratings are installed prior to casting the
concrete to make installation quicker and to avoid the channel
edges distorting due to pressure from the concrete. If required the
concrete flanking may be strengthened with reinforcing rods as
well as the concrete foundation (see step 2).
In case a completely water proof drainage line is required, we
recommend the use of a bituminous silicon sealant; such as
“Shell Tixophalte”. Apply a sealing stripe on each slot between
the channels. It is recommended this is done after coupling the
channels.

HD-PE Channel Drain - Installation (continued)
In every case, always:
• Check the load carrying capacity of the existing, and imported,
ground materials.
• Use concrete and stone aggregate appropriate for the
supporting construction.
• Ensure the correct height relationship is maintained between
channel grating and adjacent finishes.
• Use the correct dimensions for the supporting concrete in
accordance with EN 1433 load classes.
