Carbohydrate CountsOn Lunch Menus
• Added total grams of carbohydrate (CHO) to each food item on monthly lunch menu.
• Researched by Francine Kerber, RD with Bon Secours Good Life Center for nutritional accuracy.
• One serving of CHO is 15g, according to the American Diabetes Association CHO Exchange List.
• Most children should eat 45-75g per meal.• Benefits diabetic children w/their insulin.
Elementary School Menu With Carbohydrate Counts
Dynacal
• SNS added all lunch menus to the district calendar powered by Dynacal so parents can get menus on their hand held PDA’s.
• www.Dynacal.com/henrico to select the lunch menus for ELEM. MS, & HS.
Nutrition Nuggets and Teen Food & Fitness NewslettersSNS is again offering these informational school-to-home
reproducible newsletters from September to May.
Newsletters are e-mailed monthly to:*Principals for communications & school websites
*HCPS website *All School Cafeterias
Newsletters help your school qualify for the Healthy Virginians Scorecard with the Governor’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Gold Award by ‘targeting nutrition and physical activity at home’.
Newsletters are photocopy ready for all to re-use.
Nutrition Nuggets and Teen Food & Fitness Newsletters
Food Explorers Curriculum Grade 1
• Objective:– To introduce an unfamiliar fruit or vegetable w/lesson
plan. 1st graders will sample while learning about its origin and nutritional benefits.
– Program is developed & paid for by SNS– Program Length: Monthly for 15 minutes– Program Frequency: Available to teachers and
cafeteria manager by e-mail on the first of each month (October 2009 through May 2010)
– When: Determined by classroom teachers per their schedule.
Food Explorers Curriculum For Grade 1
Day of Lesson: -Cafeteria staff prepares bite-sized samples, place on trays and delivers to classroom.
-Classroom teacher teaches lesson & cafeteria staff distributes sample.-Lesson incorporates the 5 senses: looking, touching, smelling, tasting, and listening-Lesson includes the importance of tasting new foods, respecting other peoples’ preferences, & SOL reporting categories in Science, Math, English, & Nutrition.
Elem. Principals are invited to sign up their 1st grade teachers to participate.
General Mills Champions for Healthy Kids $10,000 Grant
• Together Henrico School Nutrition Services & Dept. of Health & P.E. was awarded a $10,000 grant for “Action Based Components for Learning and Good Health”.
• Over 1,200 organizations applied. General Mills selected 50 for 2009-2010 year.
• Uses a GEOFITTNESS food pyramid mat to incorporate nutrition and exercise.
• Grant will be for Dumbarton, Lakeside, Laburnum and Highland Springs Elem.
Central Virginia Foodbank Backpack Program
• Combined initiative with the CVFB/ SNS & ‘Communities in Schools of Henrico’ for 2009-10.
• Assists low-income students. • Every Friday, SNS will pack food items provided
by CVFB into a backpack to distribute to needy students.
• Backpacks will contain 6 meals, all shelf-stable and child-friendly to take home to eat over the weekend.

SNS Teaches Nutrition to Students
• All 7 Health/Physical Education teachers at Brookland MS will implement a nutrition unit from Sept. – Dec. in their curriculum.
• Tim Mertz, SNS Director has been invited to teach students a variety of nutritional topics.

Donuts With Dad
• Program purpose is to foster community, parental socialization, education and nutrition.
• PTA’s to sponsor at Elem. Schools
• Was discontinued in some schools due to SNS’s Breakfast Program
• To help your PTA, SNS will invite parents to join their children for a free breakfast when their child buys a meal.

Dr Seuss’s Birthday Tuesday March 2, 2010
• A popular marketing program that we started last year w/elem schools & PTA’s
• Join our cafeterias in celebrating Dr. Seuss week and Read Across America.
• This year SNS will showcase “Green Eggs and Ham” on our menu. Yum, yum!
• Themes can include Twin Day, Primary Color Day, Mismatched Color Day & more.
A Walk for Children's HealthApril 18, 2010
• SNS is once again partnering with Bon Secours Good Life Center.
• Purpose is to bring awareness to the problems of childhood obesity and provide education and prevention information.
• Next walk: Saturday April 18, 2010 at Maymont Park from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Great Nutrition Project for all PTA’s – free, no fund raising for walking each mile, just have fun!
The FIRST ‘Henrico Healthy Kids’ Cookbook
• Collaborative effort between HCPS, HSNS, and Bon Secours Good Life Center to publish the first “Henrico Healthy Kid’s Cookbook”
• Purpose is to bring awareness to childhood obesity by changing behavior at an early age.
• Invite all HCPS children grades K-5.
The First Henrico Healthy Kids’ Cookbook
• Focus is on nutrition, food prep & kitchen safety while teaching math, reading, and writing to children
• Aligns with Va. SOL’s• Students will submit their favorite healthy recipe
and why it’s good for them along with their favorite physical activity.
• Recipes will be have nutrient analyses provided by dietitians from the Good Life Center & VCU.
• Distributed free at “Walk” on April 18, 2010.
Coming Soon…
• Develop Comprehensive Ingredient List for all food items on HCPS menus. Will be posted on HCPS website to assist students with allergies.
• “Nutri-kids” Menu Analysis to provide Kcals, PRO, CHO, & FAT information on HCPS website.
• Add CHO Counts for breakfast menus and all ala carte snacks.
