Prior to my return to Academia (AUB) in 2008, I had 12 years industry R&D experience at Intel Corporation (1996-2008) with focus on Data Analytics and Data systems for yield analysis, process control, and Lithography image registration. A very productive research output since joining AUB, resulting in over 100 publications with consistently growing citations. Published 27 articles in top tier internationally refereed journal venues, including many in IEEE Transactions and ACM Transactions. Published over 85 conference papers, most in top tier internationally refereed venues sponsored by IEEE or ACM. A very productive funding portfolio as lead PI since joining AUB, attracting over $4.5 Million dollars funding as lead PI for most. The funding came from multiple sources, including international sources (Intel Corporation, QNRF, and KACST) and local resources (LNCSR, AUB URB, AUB Farook Jabre, AUB CRS). Inventor of 6 patents related to machine learning, data systems, and image processing. Patent based on PhD work already licensed to Intel Corporation. HIGHLIGHTS • My research focus has been focused on machine learning (ML) and data mining advances. Particular research

emphasis has been placed on enabling faster ML processing with energy aware solutions and designing new methods for applying ML to natural language processing (NLP) for opinion mining in Arabic and context aware sensing.

• Prior to my return to Academia (AUB) in 2008, I had 12 years industry R&D experience at Intel Corporation (1996-2008) with focus on Data Analytics and Data systems for yield analysis, process control, and Lithography image registration.

• A very productive research output since joining AUB, resulting in over 100 publications with consistently growing citations. Published 27 articles in top tier internationally refereed journal venues, including many in IEEE Transactions and ACM Transactions. INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE • R&D Lead for IT Software Automation of Integrated Circuit Manufacturing, Portland Technology

Development Automation, Intel Corporation, Portland, OR-USA Sep 1996 – Feb 2008 • Portland Technology Development) (PTD) is the leading research and development organization within

Intel. The organization has over 2000 PhDs. It is responsible for delivering the next generation IC manufacturing technology. Within PTD, the Automation department is tasked with delivering the next generation IT and automation systems for the IC factory.

• I was a member of the Automation department, and led several R&D programs. This includes automated material handling and data automation. My responsibilities have grown over the years. Here is a summary: • Program Lead for Next Generation 45 nm Factory Automation Sep 2004 - Mar 2007

• Directed the development of next generation 45 nm IT and automation technologies, which included the following targets: • New software framework for a unified user interface and a framework for developing

engineering analysis applications.

• Design and deployment of factory robotic (over $10 millions of dollars) equipment along with hundreds of clients and servers for factory automation.

• Lead for Engineering Systems Development Sep 2000 - Sep 2004 • Directed three first level managers and four staff engineers. The total group size varied between

twenty and forty senior software engineers. Many were holders of PhD degrees. • The group delivered software solutions to enable analysis and control of the manufacturing process.

This included analytical and visualization systems for statistical analysis, feedback control, feed-forward control, excursion detection, and pattern recognition.

• Lead for station controller software developers Feb 1998 – Sep 2000 Station controllers are the software packages that interface with IC equipment, such as Lithography, Etch, Diffusion and Metrology tools. • Directed and supervised a group of fifteen senior software engineers in PTD-Automation, including

decisions on budget, plan, finance, training, integration and assimilation plans. • Directed design and implementation of software solutions for three technology generations: 18

micron, 13 micron, and the first 200 mm wafer fab. • Influenced Virtual Factory directions and drove buy off from upper management on strategic

migration plans from Unix to NT station controllers. • Directed the group’s delivery of critical projects (clients, servers and DB applications) for the 18

micron process technology. These were implemented on different platforms (UNIX and NT), using several programming languages (C, C++, Perl and Java).

• Senior Software Engineer Sep 1996 – Feb 1998 • Owned the development of Lithography Link (Track and Stepper) station controller, taking the

project through requirement collection, development, testing and implementation in the factory.

• Staff Scientist – Computer Vision R&D, Innovision Corporation. Madison, Wisconsin-USA Mar 1994 – Aug 1996

• Researched latest imaging techniques with applications to computer vision problems. • Developed user friendly software for Imaging and Development Application Systems (IDAS). • Used high resolution area-scan and line-scan cameras to solve problems in pattern recognition and

product inspection for color and black and white imaging environments. • Provided customer support for on-site vision systems. • Represented the company in industrial shows for machine vision in industry. • Installed LAN network.

• Field Engineer, Cedarnet Company; Beirut, Lebanon Jun 1987 - Jan 1988 Installed and maintained various telecommunication equipment including microwave links and multiplexing equipment.

RESEARCH GRANTS

Since February 2008, I have led and engaged with other colleagues in large scale ML projects with major funding from international corporations and funding sources totaling over $4.2 Million Dollars. Intel Project funding that has gone directly to research groups totaled over $2.3 Millions ($1.6 Millions going directly to projects at AUB, and an estimated $700,000 going directly to students to spend a year conducting research at Intel in the US). Two additional funded projects with other colleagues totaled $2.1 Million from QNRF.
