Construction recently commenced on another 2 buildings in the Hazeldean Office Park, and the developer, Abland, is selling the sectional title space with prices starting at R14,500/m². Hazeldean Office Park is located in Hazeldean, Pretoria East, with access to the office park gained from Silver Lakes Drive.

“We are expecting construction to be completed by the end of October 2015, with a potential trading date of 1 December 2015”, says Jaun Knoesen, Project Manager at Abland. “Our bulk earthworks have been completed and the main contractor is on site”.

The Retreat Frail Care Centre now operationalThe highly anticipated Retreat Frail Care Centre officially opened its doors on 9 March 2015, and the first patients are already being cared for in the facility, which is situated within the award-winning Retreat at Hazeldean Retirement Estate.

The 1,800m² building, constructed by Sable Construction, is a 52-bed Frail Care Centre, with 32 private rooms, as well as 4 wards with 5 beds each. Facilities include a nursing station with a 24-hour Registered Nurse on duty, dining room, recuperation-, treatment and therapy rooms.

The facilities and all services provided at the centre exceeds the requirements set by the Older Persons Act 13 of 2015, as well as the Housing Development Schemes for Retired Persons Act 65 of 1988. Provision will be made for patients with all forms of Dementia, including Alzheimer’s. Emergency Care is linked directly to an ambulance service and provision has also been made for ambulance parking adjacent to the clubhouse extension.

The first building in extension 36 is almost complete and the second building is about to start coming out of the ground.

The architecture in the office park combines traditional and contemporary styles and makes use of elements such as natural stone, glass and water to give a timeless atmosphere. The buildings have been specifically designed not to “date” in years to come but at the same time to blend well with the natural environment and surroundings.

A protected wetland has been integrated into the

landscaping on the site. Great care has been taken to ensure that the dam and wetland in the park is very well maintained and it can be said with great pride that the wetland is flourishing. The water held in the dam is also used to irrigate the entire park’s landscaping and is currently almost at capacity.

Residential Construction NewsConstruction and sales feedback as at time of going to print are as follows:

The 4th and fi nal phase of the Oukraal Houses is now selling so hurry up to secure your home. I3 units have been completed in Phase 2, with the fi nal 2 still to be constructed. The civil works in Phase 3 and Phase 4 have been completed and construction is now underway.

Hazel’s Nature NookThe Pom Pom invasive weed has become a major threat to the environment in Hazeldean and surrounding areas. This weed is now flourishing all over, endangering indigenous plant species. As it is a CAT 2 invader, land owners that do not take the necessary steps to remove the plant are liable to be prosecuted with fines and possible jail time. CAT 2 invaders may also not be cultivated, propagated or sold.

As with most biological control methods, it takes some time to establish so it is critical to at least remove the flowers while a control method is being established.

Pom Pom weed (Campuloclinium Macrocephalum) is a fast encroaching category 1 invader of mainly grasslands. This herbaceous perennial plant, originating from mainly Brazil, has the ability to transform grasslands within a few years and thereby changing the landscape forever.

The Pom Pom is of the Daisy family and has an underground stem (Rhizome) from which it sends up a number of erect reddish or green stems in summer, bearing the conspicuous 25mm ball shaped pink flowers. The flowering perennial starts in December and continues to March. The flowers bear hundreds of winged seeds that are easily dispersed by the wind. It also spreads by Rhizomes.

How do you get rid of the plant? Firstly, if the plants are already flowering, cut the flower heads off and place them in a plastic bag to dry out. Once dry, burn the picked flower heads. Do not cut the plants leaves off, or try to dig the established plants out, as this just stimulates more growth.

Try and start treatment early in the season, before the flowers appear and the plants are actively growing. Check your area once more, before the onset of autumn, and give 1 more treatment if necessary. Do not spray in winter.

The most effective way is to spray with a broadleaf herbicide. 3 herbicides have been registered thus far for this treatment. Brush off, Access and Climax. It is recommended that Climax is used at a rate of 5.25g per 15L. Use with Crop Oil and Dye available from most farms Co ops – The Crop Oil will assist in the herbicide “sticking” to the leaves and the dye enables one to see where the leaves have been treated.

Apply a good cover spray to the leaves only. For smaller areas, any selective herbicide like Round Up will do. Keep

What is the connection?Diabetes can affect almost any part of the eye, and is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. The most common ways of affecting the vision is when diabetes causes cataracts, but even more devastating is when diabetes affects the posterior segment of the eye, which is termed diabetic retinopathy / maculopathy.

The risk of developing diabetic retinopathy increases with the length of the illness, and affects up to two-thirds of all diabetics after 15 years. Almost 90% of diabetics will have some degree of retinopathy after 40 years.

Even though the risk increases with the length of the disease, it has been shown that tight glycaemic control decreases the risk of progression as well as the need for laser intervention. Therefore it is off utmost importance to all diabetics to make sure that their blood sugar is well controlled, and that their HbA1C levels are checked by their attending health care providers. All diabetics should also have annual dilated eye examinations by an eye specialist in order to detect any abnormalities early, and to initiate early treatment appropriately.

What exactly is diabetic retinopathy?The complete pathophysiological mechanism is very complex, but in general terms, diabetes causes changes and damage to the blood vessels in the eye, that are responsible for nourishing the retina (light sensitive cells lining the back of the eye). Over the years the damage to the vessels causes decreased blood flow to certain parts of the retina and leakage, and can even lead to the formation of new vessels that can also leak and cause bleeding inside the eye.

What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy?In patients with early diabetic retinopathy (non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy), there are mostly no symptoms except a mild deterioration of their vision. If the damage becomes more severe (proliferative diabetic retinopathy), and the blood vessels start leaking / bleeding inside the eye, then the vision can become blurred. Some people even experience floaters (please see below “A word on floaters”). These floaters can be caused by the blood in the back of the eye (vitreous haemorrhage) or may indicate that there is traction on the retina, which can lead to a retinal detachment.

Some patients have no bleeding but still very poor vision. This can be caused by accumulation of fluid in and around the macula (central part of the retina). This is called macular oedema.

How can diabetic retinopathy be treated?Proliferative diabetic retinopathy can be treated by the use of a powerful laser that thins out the retina and increases the blood supply to the viable retina. Macular oedema can also be treated by a different type of laser that increases the reuptake of the fluid that has leaked. Another treatment option includes the use of a specific type of agent that is injected into the eye to decrease the amount of swelling at the macula, and is usually followed by laser therapy.

All these treatment options can mostly halt the progression of damage to the retinal cells, if detected early. It is therefore crucial that any form of diabetic retinopathy be followed up more regularly by the eye specialist in order to monitor progression and response to treatment.

In very severe cases, when vitreous haemorrhage (bleeding inside the eye) does not clear, or if a retinal detachment occurs, surgical intervention is required in the form of a vitrectomy. During this type of surgery, the gel inside the eye, is removed, the retina repaired and the gel replaced by either a specialized type of gas or silicone oil. This procedure must be done by a surgeon experienced in these type of surgeries (vitreo-retinal specialist).

A word on floaters and flashes in the eyes:Floaters (or vitreous floaters) are formed when parts of the gel inside the eye, becomes condensed, moves around inside the eye and is observed by a patient as rapidly moving particles, especially visible in bright light or when looking at a white background.

These floaters are usually ignored by the brain but in some patients, can be very distressing and can lead to the vision being blurred at times.

Someone who experience floaters accompanied by the following symptoms should consult an eye specialist as soon as possible:1. Floaters accompanied by light flashes with or without

a sudden decrease in vision2. Floaters accompanied by any type of decreased vision3. Floaters that are constantly blocking the normal path of light into the eye and thereby causing the vision to be constantly blurred

Treatment of floaters can be discussed with the eye specialist and should be taken seriously. Options can include laser treatment but this is usually temporary and may even require repeat treatments which may not always be successful.

The definitive treatment of floaters that constantly causes the vision to be blurred requires surgical removal of the vitreous gel (called a floaterectomy) inside the eye and replacement of the gel with gas in some cases. The risk: benefit ratio of this type of procedure should always be carefully considered and should always be discussed with the eye specialist prior to making the decision to perform such a surgery.

Curro Hazeldean Kollege kyk terug na ‘n suksesvolle eerste kwartaalDie jaar het afgeskop met 9 nuwe onderwysers wat by ons aangesluit het, veral omrede ons gegroei het van 308 na 378 leerlinge en omdat ons vir die eerste keer die Engelse en Afrikaanse leerlinge in ‘n paar vakke in graad 10 en 11 in aparte klasse ingedeel het. Die aanstelling van mnr. Enslin as operasionele hoof dra grootliks by tot ‘n meer gefokuste benadering tot ons akademie.

Met die eerste skote wat klap vir ons eerste swem-interhuis ooit, was dit duidelik dat die matrikulante en dirigente groot planne vir 2015 koester. Ons swemmers het uitstekend gevaar in die swembad. Ons swem span het ons elke week verras in die plaaslike skole liga en het die seisoen geeïndig op ‘n hoë noot deur aangewys te word as wenners van die Interhoër liga. Met ons nuwe binneshuise swembad wat later vandeesjaar gebou gaan word, sien ons uit daarna om in 2016 by die D liga aan te sluit.

Die deelname tydens die Interhuis atletiek was ‘n voorloper vir ‘n baie opwindende en besige seisoen. Ons eerste vriendskaplike byeenkoms in Delmas sal onthou word as ‘n hoogtepunt in ons kort geskiedenis vir die toeskouers wat die harte van almal in Delmasgesteel het. Baie dankie vir elke leerling wat bereid was om tot laat Vrydagaand pret op die pawiljoene te gehad het. Ons eerste plek tydens die Interhoër atletiek het ons plek in die D liga verseker vir 2016! Welgedaan!

Op die verhoog was ons beïndruk deur die bywonings syfers en die kwaliteit van ons redenaars. Hulle het seker gemaak dat die res van Pretoria kennis neem van Curro Kollege deur 1 van die kategorieë, sowel as ‘n individuele wen, in te palm tydens die Van Huyssteens Redenaars.

Die eerste kwartaal het tot ‘n einde gekom met die Kollege wat ons eerste Streeks Winter Curro Spele aangebied het. Leerders van 6 verskillende Curro skole het deelgeneem aan Tennis, Skaak, Netbal, Seuns Hokkie, Rugby en Dogters Hokkie. Dit was die eerste keer wat ons hokkie spelers die geleentheid gehad het om op die nuutgeboude Astro baan te speel.

Al ons spanne het uitstekend gevaar met ‘n hele aantal spelers wat ons gaan verteenwoordig in Junie in Durbanville tydens die nasionale toernooi.
