    WHAT IS COSHH? Control

    Of

    Substances

    Hazardous to

    Health

Provides a legal framework to protect people againsthealth risks from hazardous substances used at work.

All employers have to consider how COSHH applies totheir work.

  • 7/31/2019 Hazardous Material Handling Safety

Thousands of people are exposed to hazardous

    substances at work.

If the exposure is not prevented or properly controlled, itcan cause serious illness or even death.

This in-turn leads to lost earnings, reduced productivity, expensive prosecutions, firms being sued etc.

Examples of the effects of hazardous substances include:

    Skin Irritation

Asthma Being overcome by toxic fumes

    Poisoning by drinking toxic liquids

    Cancer

Infection from bacteria . to name a few.

COSHH applies to virtually all substances hazardous tohealth except :

Asbestos and lead, which have their own regulations

Substances which are hazardous only because they

are radioactive, asphyxiates, at high pressure, atextreme temperatures or have explosive or flammableproperties

Biological agents if they are not directly connected

with the work and they are outside the employerscontrol, such as catching a cold from a work-mate.

For the vast majority of proprietary chemicals thepresence (or not) of a warning label will indicate whether

    COSHH is relevant.

    CHEMICAL SAFETY

Chemicals are all aroundus every day

    Chemicals can be

    corrosive

    reactive flammable

    explosive

    oxidizing

    Inert

The first step in using chemicals safely is torecognize those materials that may be hazardous toyour health or physical safety.

    CHEMICAL SAFETY

In many cases, the chemicals you maybe dealing with at work are no moredangerous than those you use at home

However, at the workplace exposure islikely to be greater, concentrationshigher, and the exposure time is longer

Therefore, the potential danger is greater

    on the job.

    ROUTES OF OCCUPATIONALEXPOSURE

Inhalation - nearly all materials that areairborne can be inhaled

Skin Absorption - skin contact with asubstance can result in poisoning

Ingestion - most workers do notdeliberately swallow materials they handle

    Injection - associated with bloodbornepathogens

Ocular - absorbed through the eyes

    PHYSICAL HAZARDS

We will be looking at various types of physicalhazards and what you need to know to use thesematerials safely. To help you identify materialswhich are physical hazards, the symbols shown

    below are often used.

  • 7/31/2019 Hazardous Material Handling Safety

    15/30

Physical hazards are those substances which

threaten your physical safety. The most common

    types of physical hazards are:

    * Fire

    * Explosion

    * Chemical Reactivity

  • 7/31/2019 Hazardous Material Handling Safety

    16/30

There are three classes of materials which use the

    Fire symbol.

    1. FLAMMABLES can be gases, liquids or solids.

Flammables ignite easily and burn rapidly.

    2. COMBUSTIBLES are similar to flammables, but

they do not ignite as easily.

    3. PYROPHORIC or spontaneous combustion

materials, burst into flames "on their own

  • 7/31/2019 Hazardous Material Handling Safety

    17/30

Whenever you work with a materialthat uses the fire symbol, be sure toread the warning label and the MSDS

for safe handling procedures. Withflammables, combustibles, andpyrophorics, do not expose thesematerials to sparks, flames or other

heat sources. You must also notsmoke or light a match or flame nearthem.

    1. Explosives are materials which release atremendous amount of energy in theform of heat, light and expandingpressure within a very short period of

time.2. Water Reactive react with water and

may explode, or they may release a gas

which is flammable.3. Unstable Reactive are chemicals that

can react or can become self-reactivewhen subjected to shock, pressure ortemperature.

    19/30

Whenever you work with a material thatuses the explosive symbol, be sure toread the warning label or the MSDS for

safe handling procedures. Becausematerials that use the explosive symbolare often very dangerous to work with, you may need additional training or

instructions from your supervisor.Always check with your supervisorbefore handling or using materials thatuse the explosive symbol.

    1. Oxidizers cause othersubstances to burn moreeasily through achemical reaction or

    change.

    2. Organic Peroxidescontain oxygen and act

as powerful oxidizers.Whenever you work with a material that uses theFlaming "O" symbol, be sure to read the warning labeland the MSDS for safe handling procedures.

Many gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, and acetylene are used inthe manufacturing process. In orderto transport, store and use these

gases, they are "bottled" under greatpressure in tanks called gascylinders.

Great care should be taken when you handle gas cylindersto insure that they are not damaged when they are moved orused. in addition, you should read the warning label and theMSDS for safe handling procedures concerning the gascontained in a gas cylinder.

We will be looking at various types of health hazards and whatyou need to know to use these materials safely. To help youidentify materials which are health hazards, the symbolsshown below are often used.

The Medical symbol is ageneral symbol used toidentify materials whichare health hazards.

The Skull and Crossbones is asymbol that has been used forcenturies. Today it is used toidentify hazardous materialswhich are poisonous.

This symbol is used to identify

    materials which are Corrosives.

    Corrosives cause tissue damage and

burns on contact with skin or eyes.

This symbol is used toidentify materials which

    are Radioactive.

This symbol is used toidentify Hazardous Biological

    materials.

The effects of health hazards are classified as either:

    1. Acute

    2. Chronic

Acute Health Hazards are those whose effects occurimmediately or soon after you come in contact withthem.

For example, you accidentally spill a strong acid on yourhand. The acid will begin to burn your hand immediately.Or, you begin to work with a paint solvent in a closedarea, and the fumes make you feel dizzy.

    Happen quickly high, brief exposure:

    Examples;carbon monoxide poisoningcyanide inhalationhydrogen sulfide

    poisoning

Chronic Health Hazards, on the other hand, are thosewhose effects take years or decades to occur aftermany exposures.

An example of a chronic health hazard would beasbestos. The dangerous effects for people who havebeen overexposed to asbestos take years to appearand have been linked to a number of fatal lung

    diseases.

Each colored bar or small diamond represents a different class ofhazard. The hazard classes found on labels include Health,Flammability, Reactivity, and in some cases, Special Hazards.

Each hazard class uses a different color and a rating scale from

    0 - 4.
