Why the Change to Haz Com? To align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) adopted by 67 nations

To provide a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals

• Reduce confusion and increase understanding of the hazards

Chemical Classifications In the past, chemical hazards were evaluated in a more subjective manner.

Under the new system, chemicals must go through a specific prescriptive classification process.

Classification will be based on: Physical hazards Health hazards Environmental hazards

Page 5: Hazard Communications A New Approachineos.trainingmine.com/CourseLibrary/Ineos Phenol...MyCompany, MyStreet, MyTown NJ 00000, Tel: 444 966 6666 Signal Word Hazard Statements Precautionary

Health Hazards will be based on 10 established health classifications

Acute Toxicity Skin Corrosion/Irritation Respiratory or Skin Sensitization Germ Cell Mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Reproductive Toxicity Specific Target Organ Toxicity – Single Exposure Specific Target Organ Toxicity – Repeated Exposure Aspiration Simple Asphyxiants

Definitions of Health Hazards

Acute Toxicity – refers to those adverse effects occurring from oral or dermal exposure of a single dose of a substance or multiple doses within 24 hours; an inhalation exposure of 4 hours.

Skin Corrosion or Irritation – irreversible (corrosion) or reversible (irritation) damage of the skin, namely visible necrosis through the epidermis and into the dermis layers of the skin.

Definitions of Health Hazards (continued) Respiratory or Skin Sensitization – a substance that will lead to hypersensitivity of the airways following inhalation of the substance; or a substance that will lead to allergic responses from skin contact.

Germ Cell Mutagenicity – chemicals that may cause mutations in the germ cells of humans that can be transmitted to offspring.

Page 8: Hazard Communications A New Approachineos.trainingmine.com/CourseLibrary/Ineos Phenol...MyCompany, MyStreet, MyTown NJ 00000, Tel: 444 966 6666 Signal Word Hazard Statements Precautionary

There are specific hazard statements that must appear on the label based on the chemical hazard classification.

Hazard statements are assigned to a hazard class and category that describes the nature of the hazards of the chemical.

Examples:Flammable liquid and vaporCauses skin irritationMay cause cancer
