As a Graphic Designer I communicate my ideas visually. I want to not only impress an audience but get them to question what they are seeing. With the freedom associated with Graphic Design I love having the ability to come up with new ideas

and refine old ones to portray a message.

I am on a journey.

I understand the relationship between text and images. I realise the importance of applying them to a brief to create a message or give an overall feel. I utilise my organisational skills to perfectly structure layout, in order to successfully lead an audience through a page. I feel most fulfilled when I have effectively communicated an idea to

a specific audience through a visual layout.

I seek perfection.

I enjoy finding solutions to creative problems. I am interested in producing and creating work that has meaning and looks aesthetically eye pleasing. I am drawn to modern, contemporary work that has a classy and professional feel and appreciate the use of good typography. I am inspired by the thought “less is more.” I am continuously striving to develop the technical skills required to compete

in a fast paced and cutting edge industry.

My journey continues.

HMCREATIVE BIO

Page 8: haylee_miles_portfolio

Brief: Produce a proposal for a new magazine.

I choose to design a female extreme sports magazine but choose to keep away from the cliche messy, bitsy layouts associated with extreme sports magazines. I decided to give it more of a structured and tidy look, giving some edginess with lines and images bleeding off the page making the layout easy to follow.

URGE MAGAZINE

Brief: Pick an organisation and produce 2 x A3, recto-verso, folded publications.

I choose child abuse as my topic and Unicef as the organisation as this is something I felt strongly about. The posters I designed were notes from children who are currently been used as child slaves around the world. The notes symbolise a child’s innocence and create emotion when read by an audience, which was my main aim.

Brief: Re-contextualise an existing packaging concept, and produce a new range of a new product. To use an existing structure in a new way.

I have taken a slushy container from Mr Whippy and used it to produce a range of tie dye kits. I have designed a sleeve for the packaging to sit in and a sticker for the top of the container.

Brief: Choose a magazine genre and produce photgraphs in a similar style. Select and edit photos, put them in to an appropriate media format.

I choose to take photographs of a new Holden Commodore car as it was something I had never done before and I felt was something challanging. I then produced a magazine to put my images into (as shown above). I have called the magazine Sleek.

Brief: Re-design an annual report for Environment Waikato and work along side a photographer to get photos for your concept idea.

I have choosen to do a very tidy, simplistic layout for my annual report and have used just the 3 colours throughout, bue, yellow and balck, with different tints. Images have been used to make colallges and the images used beside the quotes are black and white. Overall I wanted a clean, easy-to-read annual report, with the right amount of negative space.

Brief: Produce a self directed project, based on an area of work that you have interest in.

I have produced a strategy based publication, collaborating peoples responses to the following,

“If I could give one piece of advice it would be....”

Images have been integrated into the publication in random places to add a quirky element to some of the responses.

To whom it may concern,

The following reference is for an exceptional person who will prove an excellent investment for whoever gets to employ her.

Haylee Miles spent three weeks at Verdict as a graphic designer intern in the nal year of her degree course.

We were having quite a busy spell when Haylee joined us and I’m happy to say she managed to hit the ground running and quickly proved her worth as a valuable asset to our team.

Sometimes we nd interns can be somewhat time-consuming to accommodate into the schedule of our design studio but Haylee was fantastic...quick, ecient, on-to-it...probably the best design intern we have had from Wintec. And we have provided many internships to Wintec for more than 10 years now.

Her ability to understand a brief and work independently is impressive. Haylee’s attention to detail and ability to ask pertinent questions is also very reassuring. She is a practical, determined, diligent, hard-working and trust-worthy person with excellent time-management and trouble-shooting skills.

As this experience was just a short term internship to aord Haylee a taste of the industry much of her work was assisting on projects. However it is obvious to me Haylee has considerable talent as a designer.

Finally Haylee was very well liked by everybody here – she is a true team player. We wish her well and know she will be an asset to any design studio.

Sincerely,

Eamonn Walsh Creative Director
