Recently we implemented a schedule change to include a P.A.S.S. period on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On these days students now meet in their Advisory class between 2nd and 3rd period for 37 minutes. P.A.S.S. is an opportunity for students to catch up on assignments, study for an upcoming test, or meet with a teacher. Below are the expectations for P.A.S.S. period:

• All students are expected to bring something to do— reading, homework, etc.

• If students need to see a teacher, they need to see that teacher the day before to request a pass from him/her. They must show this pass to their Advisory Teacher in order to be able to leave.

• Teachers may also require students to come see them during this time if they are not passing the class. Students are expected to go if their teacher requires it.

• Students may go to the Library with a pass from their Advisory Teacher. However, it is expected that they will be doing work related to classes.

Running Start allows junior and seniors to take college-level courses for both high school and college credit. The Edmonds School District pays for the college tuition depending on how many classes the student takes both at the high school and college during a quarter. Students are responsible for the application fee, course fees (approximately $125/ quarter), and textbooks (approximately $150/quarter). If you were unable to attend this meeting please make an appointment to see your counselor for information. Registration for the 2012-2013 school year will begin in March 2012.

The powerpoint presented at the Running Start Information Night on March 5 is available here.

IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATE! for Sophomores and Juniors

JUNIOR - SOPHOMORE COLLEGE PLANNING NIGHT March 15th – 7:00 pm

Meadowdale High School

Graduation requirement reports are available through Skyward Family Access.

~ Seniors must have 19 credits after first semester to be on track for graduation

~ Juniors must have 13 credits after first semester

~ Sophomores should have at least 7.5 credits

~ Freshmen 2.5 credits

If your student is behind in credits, it is important to meet with their counselor and develop a plan of action. If summer courses were taken outside of the Edmonds School District, it is your responsibility to see that we have a transcript indicating credits earned and that it is correctly reflected on your student’s current transcript. FAFSA!

It is not too late to fill out the FASFA. This federally funded student aid program became available January 1st and funds are given out to those who qualify on a need basis. We recommend all students fill it out if they have any intention of attending a two or four year college next year. Times are tough and economic and job market is uncertain. Furthering one’s education is an excellent option for the future. Consider post-high school education as an investment in your student’s quality of life.

In order to complete the FAFSA, you will need to get your pin, your documents, and complete the form! Beware of companies that promise to send college applications or fill out FAFSA forms for a fee – applying for Federal Student Aid is free and is done by completing the official FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov Scholarships Be sure to complete the MTHS scholarship application. Students must have a completed application and senior resume on file in order for us to consider them for any scholarships or awards that are chosen by our scholarship committee.

Cap & Gown You are still able to order your cap, gown, and announcements for graduation. You can order online at www.nationalachiever.com or call (800) 800-4083.

Junior Interviews – March 13, 14, & 15! During HSPE testing, counselors will be available to meet with juniors for a “Junior Interview”. Students should sign up with the counseling secretary for their Junior Interview appointment. During our junior interviews we will go over important information for post high school planning and can give students an update on their graduation status. WHO SHOULD TAKE THE SAT AND/OR ACT? If your junior has already taken the HSPE and has not yet passed one or more of the tests, and they would like to take an SAT or ACT as an alternate assessment, you may obtain a fee voucher in the Counseling Office for the SAT or ACT fee. Also, these tests are required for 4 year university admission. We encourage all students who are interested in entering a four year college or university to take both the SAT and ACT. Each test measures different aspects of learning and most colleges will accept the highest score from either test.

Junior-Sophomore College Planning Night Meadowdale High School ~ 7PM ~ March 15, 2012

Sophomores and juniors are invited to attend College Planning Night at Meadowdale High School on March 15th. Our keynote speaker will be Julie McCulloh, Dean of Admissions at Gonzaga University. Following the keynote address, we will offer over a dozen breakout sessions about various aspects of college admissions. There will also be a presentation given in Spanish which will cover a variety of topics. Even if you have attended in the past, we encourage you to come again as you cannot see all sessions in one night. Students are encouraged to attend with their parents/guardians. All attendees will also receive the Guide to College Admissions produced by the Meadowdale High School Counselors. Breakout sessions include (but are not limited to): • Applying to public universities in Washington state • Opportunities at community colleges • The ACT and SAT • Financing College • Writing the admission essay and personal statement • College for students with learning disabilities • Opportunities for the artistically talented student • Selective college admissions • The NCAA and the student athlete • College for first generation students • Opportunities in Canada

Sophomores are welcome to attend College Planning Night at Meadowdale High School on March 15th. See previous article.

Congratulations, you have made it through your first semester of high school! We hope you and your students are finding high school to be a successful and enjoyable experience. Please remember that the Counseling Office is here to support you with any difficulties or obstacles you may encounter as you complete your first year and start thinking about next year. Also remember, if your student is struggling academically, we are still offering Freshman study table during lunch. This is mandatory for students who are currently failing two or more classes, and is an opportunity for students to work on assignments and make-up work for those classes during lunch. The time is supervised, attendance is taken daily, and weekly reports are given as to student progress.

It is not too late to get involved. We always encourage our freshman to get involved in at least one club, sport, or activity outside of school so that they will have a stronger connection with the smaller community here. On the other hand, at the high school level parents and guardians can feel left out of the connection. It does become difficult as your student gets older and becomes more independent. Regularly, we hear parents and guardians ask how they can become more involved in their student’s school. Mountlake Terrace has a wonderful PTSA that meets the fourth Monday of every month, and is a great way for parents to connect and meet with other adults in the school. Please join us for our next meeting at 7pm in the Library on March 26.

International Student Exchange is seeking host families for foreign exchange students age 15-18, who will attend Mountlake Terrace High School for the 2012-2013 school year. We have students for the full school year or just one semester. Our exchange students are available from the following countries: Brazil, Vietnam, Spain,

Thailand, Denmark, Belgium, Germany China, Norway, Sweden, Slovakia and more.

All students have good English skills and are able to follow conversations and directions. Our students have full health coverage and personal spending money. The students have the desire to improve their English skills and want to live as a member of an American family. Host families do not need to have teenagers of their own; young families as well as empty nesters are excellent high school student hosts.

For more information about the foreign exchange student program, contact Darren Jordan ([email protected]) at 425-791-4792. Visit http://www.iseusa.com for additional information about International Student Exchange.”

Students of the Month

The Dream Project was founded in 2008 at the University of Washington Bothell campus and is a student-initiated high school outreach program partnering UW Bothell students with first-generation and low-income high school students to help them achieve the dream of attending college. The UW Dream Project mentors travel in teams to partnering high schools (like ours), and meet with students for weekly mentoring sessions which include the following: • SAT/ACT test sign up and test preparation • Researching 2-year and 4-year colleges • Providing extensive one-on-one support in writing college admissions essays and completing college applications. • Researching scholarships, completing scholarship applications and writing essays. • Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) • Facilitating college visits for high school students and families to meet staff and faculty. We are so excited to be able to bring this AMAZING program back to MTHS. If you or your student are interested in learning more about the Dream Project or possibly joining the Dream Team, please contact Erika Spellman at [email protected] or at 425.431.5590.

You can also visit the website for more information. http://www.uwb.edu/dreamproject

Enhancing the Dream Again! The Dream Project is returning to Mountlake Terrace High School for their 2nd year in a row!

We want to remind parents and guardians that if your student encountered difficulty in their first semester courses, there are several resources that we recommend:

HOMEWORK HELP

1. MTHS Study Club: Monday – Friday from 2 pm – 3 pm in the Library. 2. P.A.S.S. – Utilize this time on Wednesdays and Thursdays to get extra help from teachers, catch up on homework or missing assignments, or study for upcoming tests. 3. On-Line Help: One-to-one online tutors are available 1-10pm, seven days a week @ www.sno-isle.org. Click on the Homework Help link under “Research” on the left. Check with library to see in what other languages help is available. You will need a Sno-isle library card to access this help (which are available online or at your local library).4. National Honor Society – limited availability of tutors (See Julie Petterson – Counselor)5. Study Partner – find a friend/”partner” in class 6. Keep up with Skyward and check on missing assignments and upcoming tests. This is a good weekly practice to do with your student together.

About the 2012 HSPEThe 2012 High School Proficiency Exams will measure learning in Reading and Writing.

• Students in classes 2012 must pass the HSPE Reading and Writing exams or a state approved alternative in order to graduate.• Students in the classes of 2013 and 2014 must pass HSPE Reading, Writing and one end-of-course Math exam. Science is no longer required through the class of 2014. • Beginning with the class of 2015, students must pass HSPE Reading, Writing, end-of-course exams in Algebra, Geometry and Biology.• Current 9th graders will not be allowed to take the Spring 2012 HSPE.

About the HSPE and Running Start • Edmonds Community College (EdCC) has a policy that if a student informs the instructor that the student must take HSPE on a certain day and time that conflicts with the EdCC class, the instructor will give the student an excused absence. If the HSPE conflicts with an exam in the EdCC class, the instructor will provide a make-up exam student.

• Running Start students at other community colleges should check the policy at that school.

About the State Math Assessment (EOC) • The state assessment in Math will consist of two end- of-course exams – one for first year Algebra and one for Geometry. For information about Math graduation requirements, please refer to the Edmonds School District website: www.edmonds.wednet.edu/EOC

• For students who do not pass both end-of-course exams, there will continue to be a “core” Math state assessment for students to take to demonstrate Math proficiency.

About the State Science Assessment (EOC) • All students taking Biology will participate in an EOC exam. Students in the class of 2015 and beyond must pass a science exam in order to graduate.

About Students Not Passing Previous Tests• The District will be sending letters to all juniors and seniors who have not yet met standard in reading or writing, reminding them that they need to take the HSPE in the appropriate subject. Be looking for this mailing!

What is HSPE?

Important Messages about the 2012 High School HSPE and EOC exams

The High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE) are a series of tests that help make sure our students learn the foundational skills and knowledge that educators, parents and community leaders say are important to their success in life.

The HSPE serves two purposes. It helps us find out how each student is doing and how each school is doing. Schools pay attention to HSPE results. They use them to improve teaching and to do a better job of meeting every student’s academic needs.

The Education Reform Law passed by the Washington State Legislature in 1993 required the state to create a set of common learning standards for grades K-10. The law also called for a testing system that measured student learning of those standards. Washington fourth-graders started taking the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in 1997. Students are now tested each spring in grades 3-8 and 10 in reading and math. Students also are tested in writing in grades 4, 7 and 10 and science in grades 5, 8 and 10.

In 2004, the state Legislature set a date for the state to implement the third piece of its education reform efforts: student accountability. Starting with the class of 2008, all students must show they have a certain level of skill in reading, writing and math (and, soon, science) to be eligible to graduate. One of four ways students statewide must do this is by passing the HSPE or a state-approved alternative. Students must continue taking the HSPE even while attempting alternatives. Passing one of the options available under the Washington Alternate Assessment System (WAAS) is an option for students receiving special education services.

Unlike most standardized tests, which are all multiple choice, the HSPE is a mix of multiple-choice and short-answer. The HSPE is used to meet testing requirements under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. HSPE scores determine whether a school, a district or the state has met Adequate Yearly Progress.

IF YOU LOVE FOOD, THEN PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! Friends and family are welcome! Hosted by two seniors for their senior projects Giulia Velluti and Janis Gonzales. What's going to be at the dinner? Besides food, there will be games, entertainment, music, acting etc. What types of foods? At the back of the HUB, there will be tables divided into continents. Chef Melvin Banuelos will be creating cultural dishes. Since we can't really afford to make all the foods from around the world, we are asking our MTHS families to make food from their cultures and bring it to the pot luck dinner. Please no fast food. Students will be receiving a flyer with sign up information from their history and world language teachers. Please have students return the tear-off to their teacher or room 105 by March 15th. This is a great time for families to come together to share their cultures and celebrate the wealth of diversity we enjoy at MTHS.

If you want to help out, talk to Giulia or Janis or Melvin Banuelos. Our contact info is: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]. Hope you can make it.

On January 11, the MTHS DECA Club participated in the Area 2 Leadership Competition which was held at the Lynnwood Convention Center. Twenty four members of the Terrace Chapter competed against approximately 600 other students from Area 2. Terrace came home with 3 winners: Samantha Evensen-5th place in Marketing Management, Aidan Murray-3rd place in Business Services, and Marissa Gilbraith-3rd place in Accounting Applications. Placing in the top 5 allows these students to move on and compete at the State Career Development Conference on March 8–10, 2012 at the Meydenbauer Convention Center in Bellevue. This will be a very exciting and enjoyable opportunity for these members and we wish them much luck!
