Welcome to the latest edition of Hawk Green Band’s newsletter. It’s been a while since we last shared details of what the band has been up to, mainly because the band has been so fantastically busy contesting and putting on concerts and appearances at lots of events.

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice the newsletter has had a bit of a makeover. We hope you like the new format and enjoy reading all about what the band has been up to over the last few months.

Cheltenham here we come! It’s been a spectacular year so far for Hawk Green Band. February saw the band qualify for the National Finals at Cheltenham for an impressive third time!

Playing First Suite in Eb (1921), by Gustav Holst, arranged by Sydney Herbert at the North West Area At The Winter Gardens in Blackpool, saw the band come a well deserved third out of 18 bands, enabling them to compete for the national third section title in September and bring home yet more silverware to add to their growing collection.

Fond farewells and warm welcomes

The band has seen a few changes over recent months. We’ve said goodbye to Ruth SimMutch our flugelhorn player as she concentrates on other commitments, but we hope to see her return in the future. Her seat is being kept warm by Gray Tracy, a RNCM student originally from Houston, Texas. He is joined by fellow RNCM student, Rhys Edwards, who has taken up our 2nd euphonium seat. Welcome to Hawk Green, Gray & Rhys!

New Chairman

We also say a fond farewell to Ian Clarke, our chairman of the last 2 years. We’d like to thank him for all his work with the band and wish him well in his new ventures.

Stepping into his shoes, is Neil Todd, our bass player, Matt’s dad. Welcome to the team, Neil, we’re delighted to have you on board!

Cheadle Golf Club Bier Keller Early March brought laughter aplenty at Cheadle Golf Club, with the band putting on a spectacularly hilarious Bier Keller. The audience were up out of their seats joining in with antics led by conductor, Heir Hertz Van Rental, whose outfit was so impressive that even some of the band members who weren’t playing that evening didn’t recognise him as our very own Musical Director, Neil Hewson. A truly entertaining evening!

Last Night of the (Spring) Proms For many years, the band has enjoyed performing at Marple Methodist Church for the Last Night of the Spring Proms, and this year was yet again another great evening.

Buxton Contest The band were delighted to return to the recently renovated Octagon Theatre at Buxton Pavilion Gardens in April to play in the own choice contest. Musical Director, Neil Hewson chose an excellent piece of music, Fire in the Blood (2011) by Paul Lovatt-Cooper and it showed in the band’s enthusiasm and love for the piece by securing second place.

Player profile: Jayne Stephenson 3rd Cornet

When did you start playing? I started playing cornet at primary school, when I was 6 years old.

What was the first band you played with? The first band I played with apart from school, was Stockport Schools’ South Area Band.

What other bands have you played with? I’ll try and remember these in order! Stockport Schools’ Intermediate Band, Stockport Schools’ Senior Band, Elmfield Brass, Burnage, Hazel Grove, Hawk Green (1st time), The Marple Band.

When did you join Hawk Green? I first joined Hawk Green circa 1999 and played on front row, then later moved to Flugelhorn Horn when the band were 1st Section. I’ve recently re-joined the band since taking a break from playing after having my children.

What is your favourite piece of music? My favourite piece of music is actually called Music! It’s a fantastic contemporary piece by John Miles arranged by Philip Sparke, who incidentally is one of my favourite composers of music for brass band, I particularly like Music for a Festival which is another great piece.

Hawk Green Maypole Event The sun was most certainly shining down on the band in May for the annual Hawk Green Maypole Event. This lovely community event, organised by the Hawk Green Residents’ Association has continued to grow year on year and is fantastic fun for all the family.

The band was delighted to perform alongside acts such as The Big Bubble Man (Ian Russell) and others.

We couldn’t convince any of the band members to take part in dancing around the maypole, but we did convince them to entertain the crowd with classic pieces such as The Floral Dance, Mr Jums and Sweet Gingerbread Man, which is one of our bass trombonist’s, Tony Grant, favourite pieces (you may have guessed: it features bass trombone!)

St Thomas’s Annual Summer Concert The band members thoroughly enjoyed playing at the annual Summer Concert at St Thomas’s Church, High Lane in early June and look forward to returning to play later in the year for Remembrance Sunday and St Thomas’s Christmas Concert. Please do join us.

Whit Friday March Contest The annual famous Whit Friday March Contest is the one our band members look forward to the most. Not only is it a great evening, visiting various villages around Tameside and Saddleworth, but it allows the band to compete against some of the most famous bands in the country. The band decided to concentrate on Saddleworth locations again this year, playing at Lydgate, Scouthead, Greenfield, Dobcross and Friezland.

The band secured prizes playing O.R.B. by Charles Anderson at two out of the five venues they played: 3rd best Third Section Band at Scouthead and 2nd best Third Section Band at Greenfield. They narrowly missed out on a prize at Friezland, coming 4th and came a very respectable 8th overall out of 68 bands at Dobcross.

Putting on the Ritz (on the bandstand) The end of June saw the band return to Buxton to put on a brilliant afternoon’s music on the bandstand, entertaining the huge audience with pieces such as Putting on the Ritz, Don’t Stop Me Now, and solos from Gillian Spragg (On My Own) and Hayley Cocksey (the theme tune to Hetty Wainthropp Investigates); a duet played by Phil Jones and Rhys Edwards (Deep Inside the Sacred Temple) and a wonderful trio from the front row cornets: Sam Barnett, Katherine Rattigan and Rachel Hall, who performed Twelfth Street Rag to rapturous applause.

Thank you! As always, we’d like to thank you for continuing to support Hawk Green Band, and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

BECOME A FRIEND OF HAWK GREEN BAND What does it mean to become a friend?

Hawk Green Band has no commercial sponsors and its members work hard throughout the year raising the funds required to run the band. Each year the band represents Marple and Hawk Green at local functions and in contests and provides entertainment at several events which have become an annual fixture.

Instruments, music, accommodation, uniforms and transport are a constant drain on resources which is why we are asking you, our local friends and supporters, to help us keep alive this great tradition by donating £10 or more, per year.
