Try Fitness was founded in 1996 by KC Carlberg, an ACE- and ASCM-certified personal trainer, a certified Wellness Counselor, spin instructor, and a USA Triathlon Certified triathlon coach. She wanted to create a fun and supportive environment where women of all fitness levels and athletic abilities can achieve their fitness goals. KC's motto is: "We put the fun in fitness."“This has been an incredible journey,” says KC, “one in which I have no re-grets.” “I have had the opportunity to work with 100’s of women of all walks of

life and help them achieve their health and fitness goals. I have seen women create bonds of friendship through our training groups that continue to last over the years. And it has been a thrill for me to see so many women exceed their own expectations and surprise them-selves in fantastic physical achieve-ments like weight lose, marathons, tri-athlons and more. For me, I believe that working out taking care of ourselves on a physical level is the core to transform-ing our lives.”

In our latest print issue of Hawaii Sport you can read about Jonathan Lyau who has participated in the Great Aloha Run since 1985 - all 29 of them, and 30 this next Great Aloha Run...Lyau is not alone in this club though...here is an article that The Great Aloha Run have provided us, and it warms to read about these runners who keep in shape and are dedicated to do so.

Living Well, Living Aloha

Participating in anything for 30 years is a tremen-dous accomplishment. For the 68 participants who are 30-Year Ohana Members, this feat is a shining reflection of the healthy lifestyles they choose to lead.

At 84-years old, Masuo Kino is the oldest 30-year GAR Ohana Member. In 1985 when GAR first started, he was working for the Hawaii Department of Social Services and Housing (DSSH) in the Vocational Rehabilitation office. Back then he ran 10Ks, half marathons and GAR, but now he just does the Great Aloha Run.

This Kaneohe resident prepares for the Great Aloha Run by walking about one to two hours at the Hawaiian Memorial Park cemetery. “The Great Aloha Run keeps me, no, FORCES me to train regularly and keeps my health up. I have no inten-tions of giving up. As long as I can walk, I’ll do the Great Aloha Run.”

Three afternoons a week after his nap, “I do a complete circuit of the park, about 4.5 miles. While I walk, I also do recycling. I carry a bag and go into every trashcan, so I have a double purpose of exercising and being a good citizen. Exercise is good for the body and good for the mind.”

The oldest female member of this elite club is 80-year old Mary Kawahara. Exercise is also a big part of her life. She’s been going to the gym, now Punahou Fitness, five times a week for the past 34 years. “About five or six ladies at the gym said ‘Let’s try to do the marathon.’ So we all signed up but no one did it except for me.” She did her first

Honolulu Marathon in 1983 and has since participated in 35 marathons here and elsewhere. Her marathon days are over now, but she still does the Great Aloha Run. For the past three years, her GAR Buddy has been her young 70-year old friend.

Although people call her “The Crazy One,” Mary is sensible about exercise. “So many of my class-mates don’t exercise. Even people in their 60’s or 70’s should just start walking for half an hour or so, but not just one or two days. You have to exercise at least 4-5 times a week. Thank heaven Ha-waii has good weather so we can exercise almost every day.

“For me, exercise is first. Sec-ond is shopping and then is cleaning house!”

Brothers Harris and Hiram Ho of Kaneohe are also 30-year veterans of the Great Aloha Run, as well as father and son dual, Curt and Melvin Mura-moto of Mililani. Curt, now 41, was only 11 years old when he did the first GAR. Father Melvin will be 70 years old later this year.

Congratulations to all of our 30 Year GAR Ohana Members for being such wonderful examples of Living Well and Living Aloha!

“To kick off 2014, Sandbox Island BMX hosted the first annual Hawaii Bike Festival! A day full of racing, exhibitions, vendors and food! The festival is the collaborative effort of Sandbox Island BMX, MTB Hawaii and Chillaxin.com in an effort to cre-ate an event that would help unite the cycling community in Hawaii. All proceeds of the festival are being donated to Sandbox Island BMX in an effort to improve the facilities and create a venue for Hawaii’s future cyclists.

Page 32: Hawaii Sport February 2014 - Digital

The festival was a huge success with mas-sive support from local companies and rid-ers. Over 30 companies signed on as spon-sors including BIKEFACTORY Hawaii, Santa Cruz Bicycles, Red Bull, Plumbers & Fitters USA Local Union 675, The Outlets of Maui Lahaina, National Fire Protection, Island 98.5 & Island 101.9, Hawaii Photo Rental and many many more. In addition the facili-ties at Sandbox BMX have already been im-proved upon with the construction of a new pump track. The pump track is now a perma-nent fixture and will be used in the upcoming season for Strider events!

Page 33: Hawaii Sport February 2014 - Digital
Page 34: Hawaii Sport February 2014 - Digital
Page 35: Hawaii Sport February 2014 - Digital

During the Festival riders battled all day in the Sprint Eliminator, Pump Track Challenge and Cyclocross races. The biggest crowds gathered to watch the Red Bull Jump Jam where riders dropped off 14 foot high containers and pulled massive backflips on the jump. Sponsor participation enabled raffle prizes to be distributed every 15-30 minutes all day long. The Kalihi Fixie crew even ped-aled out to take Best of Show in the Bike Parade!

Mahalo to all the sponsors, vendors, volunteers and every one who came out to show their support of cycling. The Hawaii Bike Festival is a go for next year!”
