NtWS Briefs NCO class to graduate

Students of the Brigade Schools' Noncommissioned Officers Basic Course, Class 2.91 will graduate Friday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Air Station's theater. SgtMaj. L.E. Chatman, sergeant major of Marine Aircraft Group-24 will be the guest speaker.

First U.S. ship named for Vietnam battle

The Navy recently commissioned its newest Aegis-guided missile cruiser, OAS Hue City at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Hue City is the first U.S. Navy warship named for a battle during the Vietnam War. LISS Hue City is named to honor U.S. Marines, sailors and soldiers involved in the battle to retake the old Vietnamese imperial capital of Hue from invading forces during the 1968 TET offensive.

USS Arizona closed for re-painting

The US$ Arizona memorial will be closed to visitors through Oct. 10. In preparation for the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the structure will be stripped and re-i ',anted. The ahoreside visitor .,-or will remain open, and visitors will be able to view a historical film about the ettack.

Transition assistance offered

A program for Marines, sai- lore and their families leaving active duty within 180 days will take place Oct. 7-10, g a.m.-4 p.m. in the Air Station's theater. Career selection, resume writing and job interviewing will be among the topics discussed. To register, contact your unit's administrative section. Attend- ance is mandatory for anyone expecting to leave the service.

Additionally, a lecture on "Marketing Yourself for a Second Career" will be featured Oct. 9, 9.11 a.m. in the Station's theater. Officers and senior NCOs who plan to leave the service in one-five years and their spouses may attend. Competition for jobs and career change anxieties will be among the issues discussed.

Gas station to close Sunday

The Air Station's gag lanes and service station will be closed Sunday due to a power outage necessitated by repairs.

Job fair today Job Expo '91 will be held

at the Pearl Harbor Chief Petty Officer's Club today from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The expo will give dependents, retirees and soon-to-be separated members the chance to meet representatives from many of Oahu's businesses and government agencies to discuss potential employment.

It was a homecoming from the desert that compared with any that occurred last spring; when the majority of Kaneohe Bay's war veterans returned to joyous, and seemingly endless Hawaiian celebrations.

While nearly 350 Marines of Security Detachment, 3d Mar- ines, didn't receive the "mother of all parades" or massive media attention, they did get a warm welcome behind building 1087 upon their return from Southwest Asia Sept. 18.

LCpl. Rudy Trevino, an infantryman with Company A, let Bn., 3d Marines, was on-hand to welcome back his hest buddy, LCpl. Ron Stremlau, also with Co.A.

"I just found out 15 minutes ago that he was coming home," Trevino said. "I can't wait."

The reunion was especially important for these two. When Stremlau deployed with the security detachment, Trevino was forced to stay behind for medical reasons. It was the first time since they met in boot camp that the two had been separated.

"We were both set to go back to Saudi, " said Trevino, who was with Co.A during Opera- tions Desert Shield/Storm. "But I had to have surgery, nod Ron left. We both wanted to go back. Man, we've been through everything together."

When Marines clad in civilian clothes began filing off the bus, and started shouting "wrong bus, wrong bus .' we're coming from Florida, not Saudi," the 200 or so friends, family and co- workers knew they would have to wait a little longer.

Hawaii, struck up a peppy tune, obviously trying to distract and appease the impatient ones. Luckily for the Marine musi- cians, the wait was soon over, and the first of seven buses, led by an obligatory, siren-flashing truck, pulled into view.

What ensued can only be described as midnight madness.

Within seconds, scores of smiling, desert cammie-clad Marines were milling about looking for spouses and children, friends, or just walking around their familiar stomping grounds.

Senior Chief George Mitchell, Company A, 3d Medi- cal Battalion, Brigade Service Support Group-1, took more than a few minutes to embrace his wife Diana and their 13-month- old son, Max.

It was a breeze," said Mitch- ell when asked by a friend how the deployment went. He immediately set his son on the ground, urging him to take some steps.

LCpl. Raymond Arthur with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-24, said he got a lot out of his time in the desert.

"It was pretty cool," he said, "but it's great to be back. This is a real nice reception they have for us here."

Arthur and his platoon were based in Bahrain. tasked with pltirrling an ammunition dump and a pier.

"I volunteered to go over and I consider myself lucky to have gone," added Arthur. "This was my first deployment, and now, I think I understand more what being a Marine is all about."

The security detachment Marines and sailors, a diverse crew from a variety of jobs and parent unite within the let ME/3, were returning after a five. month security mission with Marine Forces Southwest Asia, where they had served as the ground combat element for the Special Purpose Marine Air- Ground Task Force there.

mainly of guarding the Port of Jubayl, along with several ammunition points, camp sites and piers. As the massive equipment retrograde progressed, many Kaneohe Marines helped support the on-loading of the

MPF ships. In addition, a complete and intensive readi- ness training schedule was maintained throughout the deployment.

Woman rescued after forklift accident Sy LCpl. Posner Smith i.weu earns SW/ Wnfer

A civilian contract worker pinned and severely injured under her overturned forklift was saved by more than 30 Marines and Morale, Welfare and Recreation employees who lifted the 7,250-pound vehicle off her Sept, 17.

The forklift operator, Jean- ette McRoy, 23, of Red Hill, was operating the forklift in the receiving area behind the Air Station's main exchange when the vehicle overturned, leaving her pinned under the forklift, according to witnesses.

"As soon as the forklift went over, I dialed 911," said Scia Renshaw, the receiving area super-visor. "Within seconds, all these Marines had jumped a fence and started lifting the forklift off her. Without a doubt, they saved her life."

McRoy is listed in critical

Marines, MWR employees lift 7,250-pound vehicle off victim condition at Queen's Medical Center. She suffered a severely crushed left leg, a broken left arm, a broken right ankle, a concussion with a severe abrasion to the fore- head and internal injuries, according to her husband, .3 ell McRoy, an Army sergeant and medic at Schofield Barracks.

He offered his sincerest thanks to those Marines and civilians who helped his wife.

"I can't give enough thanks," he said. "Thank God the Marine Corps is beyond just watching. If they hadn't been there, and did what they did, my wife would probably be dead."

Most of the Marines who took part in the rescue are

to the 1st Radio Bn. aid station to retrieve splints, a spine board, a stretcher and a medical kit, and was joined by Seaman Juan Ochoa, another corpsman.

"Her left arm and leg were definitely broken," said Ochoa, "so we put an air splint on the leg and a sling on her arm. She was in a lot of pain, but conscious. She was in shock."

Octant and Linder continued to monitor McRoy's vital signs and injuries, and were soon joined by two emergency

medical technicians from the Station Fire Department. An ambulance from the Air Station's medical clinic soon arrived and transported MeRoy to Castle Medical Center. She was later taken to Queen's Medical Center.

McRoy, who was working for Hawaiian Environmental Transfer Company, a recycling firm based in Kalihi, wits loading pallets of recycled paper products onto a truck when the accident occurred.

Fall is the time to go back to school and for Marino, it is no different, except they started a little sooner. The first two classes of the Brigade Tactics School, the Surveillance, Tar- get, Acquisition and the Squad Leaders courses, graduated Sept, 19 and Sept. 20 respectively,

The two courses were the first taught since Operation Desert Shield /Storm and both applied lessons learned from the operations, While the STA course remained basically the same, the Squad Leaders course, for lance corporals and corporals, has been almost completely revamped.

"We learned in Saudi Arabia that a lot of people hadn't handled ammunition. Some had

carried M203s (grenade launcher) for years and had never fired them," said lstLt, Ken Wolf, officer-in-charge of the school.

Besides shooting every weapon organic to an infantry battalion, the students learned how to properly employ each. In addition, they learned how to call in and spot for supporting arms.

"We've also included how to operate in urban terrain and how to conduct boat operations," Wolf explained.

Along with the new lessons, the students now spend more time in the field.

"A lot of he students are enjoying themselves, because they are getting to do things they've never done before," said SSgt. Vance Turner, chief instructor for the school. "They also get a chance to be a leader instead of a follower."

The STA course is a little different from the Squad Lead- ers Course. It is based on the instruction from the Scout Sniper School at Quantico, Va. It offers specialized training for Marines wanting to get into a STA platoon.

"The course is taught so all the STA platoons in the regiment will be working off the same 'sheet of music,' so each platoon doesn't have its own way of doing things," explained Sgt. Matthew Garvey, assistant instructor for the STA course.

A third course will be added in October on jungle warfare. It will be taught over eight days, four of which will be in the field.

"We are going to teach jungle survival, guerrilla warfare and counter-guerrilla operations," explained Sgt. Arturo Beltran, the jungle warfare instructor.

Besides the course presently offered, Wolf explained, they also conduct mobile training teams which will teach anything a unit needs. They also have courses geared specifically to air craft unite.

"This course gave me the opportunity to see what corporals and sergeants have to deal with," said LCpl. Michael Cusumano, 3d Bo., 3d Marines, a student in the Squad Leaders Course. "Now I understand better what my responsibilities are to them."

While most of the students attending courses at the school are based here, there were a few

-from Camp Smith and Marine Barracks, Hawaii .

"During the course you had to overcome a lot of mental fatigue, which built a lot of character," explained Cpl. Matthew Mouton, a diary clerk with Headquarters and Service Bn., Camp Smith. "What I've learned here, I'll be able to pass on to my troops at Camp Smith."

Last May, a group of K-Bay civilian employees banded together to help a co-worker. Keoki Ernestberg, the 8-year-old grand- son of Edwin Vincent, a Facili- ties Department employee, desperately needed a kidney transplant. The boy had already gone through two unsuccessful transplants.

To help the family finance the operation, Facilities De- partment workers held a fundraiser. They sold Portuguese sausages both on and off-base.. The campaign was very successful: Nearly $1,400 was raised.

Unfortunately, the money could not be used as it was intended. Tragically, Keoki passed away before the scheduled operation.

Recently, a check for the money raised was presented to Vincent. He donated it to a local pastor who helped to promote the fundraiser off-base.

"It makes you feel good to know that people care," said Vincent. "I want to thank everyone involved. They donated a lot of time and energy, and it's very much appreciated."

200% effort

The Air Station community quite literally gave of itself Sept.

23. Due to a great turnout of volunteers, the goals for a blood drive held on that date were not only met - they were exceeded by 200 percent, according to Stephanie Chang, donor resource manager at Tripler Army Medical Center. A total 129 units of blood were collected, she said.

K-Bay's next blood drive is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 20. Active duty personnel, dependents and civilian personnel are all encouraged to support the event.

Air Station Commanding Officer Col. R.R. Critser and officials from the Blood Bank at TAMC have expressed their thanks to all volunteers involved.

Sept. 11 was a big day for SSgt. Joseph Bottum and LtGen. Royal Moore. Bigger, perhaps for Bottum, who was promoted to the staff NCO ranks by ,LtGen. Moore, corn mend in g general of Fleet Marine Force Pacific. Yet, LtGen. Moore's day was special, too, as he got some flight Bottum time on his favorite F/A- 8 Hornet jet, aircraft number "14" from Marine Fighter Attack Squad- ron -235. According to Capt. Scott Loch, '236 assistant aircraft maintenance officer, LtGen. Moore flew aircraft 14 continually with the VMFA-235 "Death Angels" throughout Operation Desert Shield, and personally flew it to El Tom, Calif. from Southwest Asia.

Bottum, now the ordnance noncommissioned officer-in- charge at VMFA-236, had arrived the night before from Quantico, Va., where he had graduated from the staff academy. Upon reporting to work on the 11th, Bottum learned that he would get his rocker via the FMFPac commanding general, who would be in the area after flying. Jobs well done

Headquarters Company, 3d Marines, recently presented a Navy Commendation Medal, two Navy Achievement Medals and a special citation from the Rhode Island House of Representatives to four of its members for outstanding service during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

The NCM went to Petty Officer Second Class Mark Williamson, a corpsman with the unit. The NAMs went to Sergeants Daniel Miller and Frank Huerta. Sgt. Kevin Dugan's home state of Rhode Island passed a special citation honoring his military service during Desert Shield/Storm, and participating in the "liberation of Kuwait."

Capt. Mark Losack, Headquar- ters Co., 3d Marines commander, presented the awards, and in an informal speech afterward, told his Marines and sailors that it was a good day indeed, when you can honor some of your own. Sgt. Michael Cassidy knows his job, Marine Corps knowledge and is a squared-away leatherneck. He also makes a mean shrimp creole.

All this explains why he was chosen as the Chef of the Quarter for third quarter, calen- dar year 1991.

Although he barely edged-out LCpls. Clinton Diviney and Anthony Bridgewater in the cook-off portion of the competition, Cassidy's five-years experience made the difference in the written test and board segments. All three chefs scored 100 percent in the step-by-step recipe product preparation sheet, which, along with the board

segment, was worth 15 percent of the total score. The written test made-up 25 percent.

Cassidy, who represents Anderson Hall and comes from 3d Marines, might have held the home mess hall advantage over Diviney and Bridgewater, who work at Pleas Hall. But Cassidy said his experience was the deciding factor.

The cook-off, worth 45 percent of the total score, was where each chef had the chance to show their stuff in front of a distinguished panel of judges and guests.

The recipe chosen for the cook- off was shrimp creole, served with steamed rice and biscuits. While the biscuits and rice were made by non-competing cooks, Cassidy, Diviney and Bridgewa-

ter were tasked to make from scratch the creole creations. The chefs had to follow specific recipes. They were allowed few secret ingredients.

There was a marked difference between the creoles.

Diviney's was the spiciest, and thicker than Bridgewater's. Cassidy's sported more "texture," in the words of some of the judges.

The only thing I did differently from the recipe was substituting butter for oil when I sauteed the vegetables," Cassidy said after the competition.

The honored guests were BGen. C.D. Kuhn Jr., commanding general, let MEB, who was accompanied by Brigade Ser- geant Major SgtMaj. Harold T. Chapman, and joined by LtCol. G.H. Hughey, Brigade G-4 officer.

Col. W.E. Rollings, 3d Marines commander, and Col. K.D. Frantz, BSSG-1 commander, headed a diverse panel of judges tasked with deciding the overall quality of each chefs creation.

The shrimp creoles were sampled and judged on taste and texture. Each chef was scored on his service to the judges on the buffet line. In addition, each chef prepared an individual plate, which was judged for attractiveness and decorative garnish.

Because a competition such as

the cook-off is so subjective, and to ensure unbiased opinions, a wide variety of judges were invited, according to MSgt. John Ruiz, the Brigade food service technician.

"Also, having judges that don't know the specifics of food service makes for unbiased judging," Ruiz added.

The commanders and sergeants major of the Brigade's major subordinate commands, 3d Marines, BSSG-1, MAG-24 and Co. B, 7th Communication Bn., were asked to judge. The commanders and first sergeants of the MSC's headquarters and service companies were also asked to judge.

BGen. Kuhn, in a post -competition speech, said all three cooks are a credit to the Marine Corps.

"In my job and position, I get a chance to go to a lot of homes, and certainly have the benefit of a lot of fine cooks," the general said. "Without a doubt these three fellas here are on par with many of the cooks I've experienced. It's really to their credit."

To Diviney and Bridgewater, BGen. Kuhn acknowledged that they gave up experience to Cassidy, but challenged each to go up for more chef of the quarter competitions.

"I'm looking forward to seeing you both back here again," BGen. Kuhn said.

OMBUDSMEN: Family support backbones

Normally, people don't expect to have someone call in the middle of the night with a crisis, but for Om- budsmen it's their job.

Ombudsmen are spouses of active duty Marines and sailors who are trained to handle most emergency situations which may occur when a spouse's Marine or sailor is deployed.

They act as liaison between the unit's commanding officer and families. They keep the commanding officer informed about matters concerning the families.

They are also a wealth of information, the next best thing to the yellow pages for many spouses. They give the spouses referral information on services available on and off base.

For example, they are able to steer a spouse to the Red Cross, or where to receive and update ID cards, or where to get license plates renewed.

Because of the important role an Ombudsman plays in the communication between a unit and its families, it takes a special person to become an Ombudsman.

Volunteers are usually screened and appointed by the unit's commanding officer. Once a spouse has been selected, she must attend a training program at the Station's Family Services center.

Ombudsmen are not professionals. However, they are constantly and consistently attending meetings, work- shops, orientations and symposiums where profession als give speeches and advice.

Ombudsman of the Year. Iwanski who is the wife of

MSgt. Roman Iwaneki, Headquarters, MAG-24, arrived here in June 1988 from California. Iwanski was involved in a similar program there, however she saw room for improvement.

"I didn't find it real effec tive," she explained. "But shortly after we arrived here. my husband told me his unit was looking for an Ombuds- man."

Although lwanski had no idea what an Ombudsman was, she agreed to give it a try. It didn't take long for things to fall into place.

She began to organize fundraisers, put together a monthly newsletter, help maintain funds for families in need. She also acted as a referral service for the wives and as a liaison between the families and the commanding officer.

"I'm no longer council president, but I plan to continue to be as big a part of the program as I can," she said.

In a recent luncheon held at the Officers' Club here, BGen. C.D. Kuhn Jr., let MEB commanding general, paid homage to the recent efforts and support of all the Ombudsmen.

TAFAKULA '91: U.S., Tongan Marines, Australian soldiers learn to work together

TONGATAPOU, Kingdom of Tonga- (hen Marines travel all over the world, they sme into contact with different cultures and leas. Many times on their world-wide jaunts, hey have to work with or alongside of the military of foreign countries. It's said no two people are alike; it follows that no two military forces are the same either. When two or more military forces most work

together, the leaders can either build a wall of indifference between them, continuing to do things their way, or they can open the lines of communication and try and learn from the other's skills and experiences.

The latter is a constructive technique called interoperatabilty, and some Marines recently put it to use once again during the combined force exercise Tafakuls '91, hosted by the Kingdom of Tonga.

It was the first time any U.S. forces trained with the Tongan military. Members of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade were joined by the Assault Pioneers Platoon, 1st Royal Austra- lian Regiment.

Recently seen on a much larger scale in the Gulf war, military interoperatability boa been a decisive factor in countless battles throughout history, as different forces align themselves into stronger entities.

Although this wasn't the purpose of Tafakula '91, interoperatability was used in order to better understand how the participating forces work and to use that information to prepare for possible future exercises.

One way this was achieved was by placing members of the different forces among the units of the other countries to see how differently things were done. Another way was to form certain teams that were required for parts of the exercise.

LCpl. Steven R. Scrugham, an infantryman from Company K, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, was assigned as a machine-gunner with the Austra- lians. There he learned, among other things, the operation of their crew-served, 7.82mm-firing

"Compared to our M80, the Mag is barrel- heavy, and hard to fire from a standing position," said the 22-year-old Orlando, Fla., native. "It's longer, heavier, and has no heat shields so you have to wear gloves when you fire it." Scrugham said they don't use a sling to carry either, so it can be awkward to move with.

The Meg-58 has a firing mechanism that ranges from one to 10. This can be adjusted for faster or slower firing, with 10 being the fastest. The Mag-58 fires 100 rounds per minute on normal, 20 rounds a burst as required on sus- tained and 200 rounds per minute on regular. On normal and regular, the burst is a 2-3 round blast. Firing on a bipod, the Mag can strike point targets at 800 meters, 1800 meters on a

tripod. Its maximum effective range is 3,000 meters with a tripod.

According to Scrugham, the method of patrol. ling is essentially the same as what the Marines use.

"They use different hand signals and are extremely quiet while patrolling," he said. "And when they leave a position, they leave no trash behind whatsoever." Scrugham said the Aussies believe Marines zig-zag too much while patrolling and when Marines stop to rest, they stop for too long.

While there may be slight differences about patrolling methods, the difference between the Australian and American defensive positions is very apparent.

Instead of setting up a 360-degree perimeter, the Australians set up a "triangle harbor point." The three Mag-58s are set at the corners of a triangle, and the perimeter is cordoned off with string, connecting the guns. Shelters are set up along the string and movement to and from the guns is done by walking alongside. the string. Anything outside the perimeter is considered "enemy." There are no listening or observation poets set up. Anyone needing to use the head outside the perimeter must clear it with someone manning a gun, ensuring lie returns the same way he left.

it's done at each gun, two men per gun," Scrugham said. "All enlisted stand picket duty."

Another distinctive aspect of the Australian army is their practice of only eating hot meals in the field.

"The Aussie rations are definitely a lot better than MREs, even though they like our rations," claims Scrugham. "And they don't believe in eating any cold food while in the field." Each soldier has his own mini-stove with plenty of heat tabs to fuel it. "To them, there's nothing better for morale in the field than a hot meal."

For rifleman LCpl. Jimmy R. White, his five days with a Royal Tongan Marine platoon were a little less informative.

"Half the time, I was lost as to what was was going on," he said. "Sometimes I couldn't understand a word they were saying."

and patrolling techniques - again, something new to White.

"I learned a few of their signals," said the 22- year -old from Reno, Nevada. "But they were good at patrolling. They had good noise disci- pline and were motivated."

According to White, the Tongan platoon was effective in repelling and attacking roaming "enemy" forces. "They were mad that the enemy always ran from them; they wanted to fight it out."

White must have been doing something right while he was working with the Tongan Marines, as they wanted to make him a squad leader.

"I turned the offer down because of the communication barrier," he said. "I knew if I couldn't understand them very well, they wouldn't be able to understand me either."

White said he always could figure out what time to get up and what time they were stepping toff, but other than that he just went along with the .

"There were also Australians assigned to our platoon, along with two other Marines from my company, so at night we would get together and figure out what was going on for the next day."

White and his fellow Kaneohe Marines learned from the Tongans how to live off the land, and claim they never went hungry..

"I ate whatever they ate," White said. "Taro root, papaya, coconut and sugar cane -- they said they didn't need rations but could live off the land.

"They're good people," he continued. "They were very friendly, always took care of us and were always motivated and never complained."

Some of the special teams required for Ta- fakula '91 included scout swimmers, communica- tions and reconnaissance. Sgt. Bill W. Dames, detachment commander, Company A, 3d Recon- naissance Battalion, was with the "enemy" force of the exercise but also helped train some of the Tongans in recon skills and operations.

"We worked with them on nautical-chart plotting, coxswain training, patrolling, and observing and reporting on enemy forces," names said. "We also taught them to build rope bridges, how to tie certain knots we use, and scout-swimming techniques, including 1000 - meter swims."

During one of the training operations, Dames and his fellow recon Marines were on a small island guarding a "hostage." The Tongans were tasked with rescuing him.

"We were walking guard around the but the hostage was in," liamee said. "The Tongans came in on Zodiacs on the other aide of the island, (hid) the boats, snuck in, and grabbed the hostage. We never heard them coming but saw them going."

During the actual week-long exercise, there was a four-man team of recon scouts with each of the three platoons of friendly forces. bermes said they performed their duties well.

"Before the final assault (of the exercise), the teams crawled within a few feet of the old house we were holding out in, made an intel sketch and returned without us seeing them," he said.

Dames said learning was a two-way street during the exercise, as they were taught some of the tricks of surviving in the Tongan jungles by their hosts. He said learning what not to eat is just as important as knowing what is edible.

"They showed us some slugs we could eat, lot of edible fruits and roots, how to open coconuts without a knife, the best way to build jungle shelter and showed us plants that make you itch to keep away from," liRMPS said. He also told of a simple way the Tongans capture wild chickens that roam the area.

"The Tongans would take a tame rooster, tie a string connected to a small rock on his leg and let him go," he said, "and the wild roosters would come out to fight him."

Chickens fight with the spurs on their legs, jumping up to attack. "During the fight the wild chicken would get tangled up in the string, and the Tongans would then run out and grab them both," he said.

"The Tongans did great with all the training they did," liamee claims. "Some thought that a week wouldn't be enough time to go over some of the things we covered, such as the nautical-chart plotting, but they caught on right away."

"We wanted to be sure the training we had with the Tongans would be applicable for them to use with their equipment and in their own area of op erations," he said. "At the same time we looked for training in Tonga that we normally don't have. One example is survival training. These guys know how to live off the land. A 36-year old, 16-year veteran of the Marine Corps and the father of seven recently visited a group of grade school children who were his inspiration and mainstay during the Gulf war.

The children were encouraged by their teacher to write the "Any Marine" address that was given out during the Gulf war. The teacher suggested this would be a good way to show their support, not only to their relatives who were there, but also to those Marines who didn't have anyone to write them.

Threats continuously received about 30 letters from Travis and her friends as well as his own seven children. The children's letters were so full of support and curiosity for Threats, he was surprised by it all. He likened the children's letters to a spiri- tual experience.

"I cannot describe how I felt after receiving the letters," he said. "It was uplifting."

Because the children showed such dedication in keeping touch with Threats, he took most of his free time and wrote each child individually.

"I have seven children in California who I don't get to

see very often," he said. "I received letters from my children along with Hilary and the other children. It was as if I had 37 children. I guess I sort of 'adopted' them."

According to Threats, he wrote about 90 letters a month while he was in Saudi Arabia. "This included writing to my '37' children and other family members."

He also said writing to the children during his four- month stay in Saudi Arabia inspired him to make plans to visit them after his return home.

And as the time came for Threats to return to the United States, he began to

put his visiting plane into motion.

"When I returned I re- quested leave and set off on my voyage to five states," he explained. "I went to Alabama, Oklahoma, Michi- gan, Illinois and California."

After visiting family and friends in Alabama and Oklahoma, he new to Michi- gan and was met by Travis and her family. He stayed with them during his visit.

"They treated me like family," he said. "We became close friends "

During his stay Threats met all the children who had written to him in Saudi Arabia. The children had arranged for Threats to tour their school and spend two days at the YMCA camp there.

As a final goodbye, the children presented Threats with two T-shirts, two video tapes of his visit and a few other presents.

Threats continues to write to Travis, her family and her classmates. He also plans to visit them again next year.

That's what Sgt. Larry Hughes, Force Recon, Detach- ment, 16th M Ell (Special Operations Capable) had to say about the Light Strike Vehicle, the Marine Corps' newest and most capable mobile weapons platform.

Marines of the 1st Force Recon. Co based at Camp Pendleton, used the vehicle during the Gulf War and were pleased with its performance considering the brutal heat and demanding terrains it was subjected to.

Currently, 1st Force Recon has 'six of the vehicles, two of which are deployed with Hughes' platoon. The detachment had the opportunity to train with the vehicles here recently as part of a 10-day training package.

The LSV has replaced the High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle att the primary

platform for mobile reconnaissance, apparently for many reasons.

"Our best defense is to hit rough terrain at high speeds," Hughes said. "That allows us to outrun the enemy if we get compromised, since we may not have the firepower to engage a larger unit. The HMMWV can't do that.

"In addition, the independent suspension of the ISV enables us to maintain a decent base of fire at higher speeds traveling over rough terrain," Hughes said. "The gunner, sitting in an elevated cage over the other two crewmen, uses a swivel chair ui ran either an M-60 machine gun out the rear or a .50 caliber machine gun overhead."

If you have answered this ad, all you probably got was a referral to Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service.

DRMS is the Department of Defense organization responsible for selling surplus DoD property. DRMS conducts sales and

For years, DIMS has warned the public about questionable businesses that sell information on buying surplus military property.

"I've had a guy call me and say he paid $40 for a cover of one of our catalogs," said James T. Kottke, property disposal officer of the Defense Reutilize- tion Office here. "I told him that I didn't sell it to him. He had responded to an ad in a national magazine."

"I talked to one person at our auction who said he paid $400 to attend a seminar on buying government surplus," said Vernell A. Wright, DEMO marketing chief. "All he got was a lot of addresses and phone numbers which are otherwise free to the public."

Crime Prevention Month

MPs plan special programs Joint Public Attain Office

Following tradition, President Hush has designated October "Crime Prevention Month." Both the Air Station and Camp Smith's Military Police departments have special programs planned to educate the Hawaii Marine community about crime prevention.

The Air Station's MPD will have a crime prevention booth at the main exchange complex during the second and third weekends of the month. Also,

crime prevention tips provided by them will be published in the Ilawaii Marine throughout the month.

Several crime prevention programs are already provided by the MPD to the Air Station community. They include:

Operation Identification, a program to mark high value items for identification

A child identification program.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education classes conducted at local elementary schools in

conjunction with the Honolulu Police Department.

Camp Smith's MPD will offer a residential security seminar Oct. 8, beginning at '7:30 p.m. in the Manana Sciput Hut, at the Manana Housing Area. A bicycle rodeo/child safety day will take place Oct. 12, begin ning at 10 a.m. in the Manana Recreational Area, at the Manana Housing Area. A sexual assault prevention seminar will be held Oct. 24, begin ning at 2 p.m. at Camp Smith's Staff NCO Club.

Alcohol-related Incidents

A Marine was arrested by the Honolulu Police Department for driving under the influence of alcohol after he drove his vehicle through a red traffic light in Honolulu. The police smelled alcohol on his breath. He failed a field sobriety test. An intoxilyzer test showed his blood alcohol content to be .15 percent. The Marine was released on $150 bail and is scheduled to be appear in court at a later date. The Marine's driving privileges aboard the Station were suspended, and the Station decal was removed from his car.

Eleven Maines were apprehended for breach of peace after being involved in an incident in Kailua. All of the Marines were identified by the victim and were processed by the MPs. The victim was treated at the Station's medical clinic and was later taken to TAMC.

The 1991 Aloha Festival has featured many different events highlighting Hawaiian culture and heritage. One of the biggest was the Aloha Parade that took place in downtown Honolulu Saturday.

It seemed as if every high school in the state had a marching band present. The hula dancers, horses and riders, floral floats and the military were all out in force on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.

The Marines drew much applause from the thousands of spectators. The U.S. Marine Corps Band, Hawaii - formerly the Fleet Marine Force Pacific Band proudly struck up the Marines' Hymn as they passed in front of the VIP grandstand.

The band was closely followed by a sharp, cammie- clad marching unit from Brigade Service Support

Group-1. The marching unit was commanded by Warrant Officer Carlos Duchesne of Headquarters and Service Company. The platoon guide was Sgt. Harold Robinson of Supply Co.

If you missed the parade, there are still more Aloha Festival events to come. Tonight at Kapiolani Park, there will be a Pacific Culture exposition from 3-6 p.m., followed at 6:30 p.m. by a Polinisia festival. Friday night features the Waikiki Ho'olaule'a, which takes place on Kalakaua Ave., beginning at 6 pm.

Saturday festival events include the Waipahu Plantation Days from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Waipahu Cultural Gardens, and the Torchlite Water Parade on the Ala Wai Canal at 6:30 p.m.

WHEELER AIR FORCE RASE-- The Marine Cross Country team came close to ending a Navy monopoly on the HASAC championship, but the Navy's top finishes in each of the three divisions enabled them to hold off the Marines.

The Navy took first place in the Women's, Open and Master's Divisions. The Marines didn't place any runners in the top three, but did place the majority of its runners in the higher ranks.

The top finisher for the Marines in the Open Divi- sion was Gary Nettles from MALE -24, who placed fourth with a 39:10 for the 6.2 mile race. Danny Pinyerd, MWSS-174, finished right behind him at 34:18 with a fifth place finish.

The Open title was given to the Navy, beating out the Marines by only four points.

In the Master's Division, the only Marine to enter the race was Mike Babcock, MALS-24, who placed 26 with a 40:23.

The Army ran away with the Master's title with several strong runners.

The top Marine for the Women's Division was Alesia Stanley, MALS-29 who placed fourth with a 43:56.

The Navy controlled that division, taking the top three spots.

While the Marines came close to upsetting the Navy, taking the top places in all three divisions was all the Navy needed to clinch the over-all title for the fourth consecutive year.

Mule Stanley, MALS-24, finishes in fourth place for the Women's Division with a 43:56.

IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF ORDINANCE NO. 79-44 AMENDING ARTICLE III, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANS- PORTATION SERVICES, CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU, HEREBY ESTABLISHES TRAFFIC SCHEDULE NO. 91-9 TO AMEND SCHEDULE V OF SECTION 15-7.2(2)(C) ESTABLISHING SPEED LIMIT - 25 MPH; SCHEDULE XIV OF SECTION 15-11.3 ESTAB- LISHING STOP INTERSECTIONS; SCHEDULE XVI OF SECTION 15-13.4 ESTABLISHING RESERVED PARKING STALLS, SCHE- DULE XIX OF SECTION 15-13.10(1)(f) ESTABLISHING TOW ZONES - AM AND PM PEAKS; SCHEDULE XX OF SECTION 15-13.10(1)(g) ESTABLISHING TOW ZONES - 24 HOURS; SCHEDULE XXII OF SECTION 15-14.5(1) ESTABLISHING PROHIBITING PARKING CERTAIN AREAS; SCHEDULE XXIII OF SECTION 15-14.5(2) ESTABLISHING PROHIBITED LOADING/UNLOADING; SCHED- ULE XXIV OF SECTION 15-15.1(4)(1) ESTABLISHING CURB LOADING ZONES; SCHEDULE XXV OF SECTION 15-15.3(4) ESTABLISHING OFFICIAL BUS STOPS AND SCHEDULE XXVII OF SECTION 15-17.1 ESTABLISHING CROSSWALKS.

SECTION 1. Chapter 15 (1976 Traffic Code), City and County of Honolulu, as amended, is hereby further amended in the following particulars: a. By amending Schedule V of Sec. 15.7.2(2)(c) establishing speed limit -

25 mph by adding thereto the following item: ""Kapaa Quarry Rd., for its entire length."

b. By amending Schedule XIV of Sec. 15-11.3 establishing atop intersections by adding thereto the following items: "Kaupu Way. Traffic on Kaupu Way shall stop before entering Kaupu Pl." "Kaupu Pl. Traffic on Kaupu Pl. shall stop before entering Waipahu St." "Ohohia St. Traffic on Ohohia St. shall stop before entering Ualena St."

c. By amending Schedule XVI of Sec. 15-13.4 establishing reserved parking stalls by amending item relating to Kam IV Rd., Koko Head side, mauka direction for a distance 440' from the mauka edge of the Kalihi Fire Station's driveway reserved for authorized police vehicles only; to read: "Kam IV Rd., Koko Head side, for a distance 195' mauka direction, from the mauka edge of the Kalihi Fire Station's driveway, reserved for authorized police vehicles only, during hours 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Mon. through Fri., except holidays."

d. By amending Schedule XIX of Sec. 15-13.10(1)(f) establishing tow zones - AM and PM peaks by deleting therefrom the following items: "Ena Rd., Ewa side, between Kalakaua Ave. and Hobron Ln." "Waiakamilo Rd., both sides, between Dillingham Blvd. and Nimitz Hwy."

e. By amending Schedule XX of Sec. 15-13.10(1)(g) establishing tow zones - 24 hours in the following particulars: 1. By adding thereto the following item:

"Waiakamilo Rd., both sides, between Dillingham Blvd. and Nimitz Hwy."

2. By amending item relating to Ena Rd., mauka side, for a distance 255' Ewa direction from the Ewa curbline prolongation of Ala Moana Blvd.; to read: "Ena Rd., both sides, for its entire length."

f. By amending Schedule XXII of Sec. 15. 14.5(1) establishing prohibited parking certain areas: 1. By adding thereto the following items:

"Apole Pl., both sides, from North Rol. to its terminus." "Hauoli St., Koko Head side, between King St. and Kapiolani Blvd." "Kaupu P1., within its turnaround area." "Kaupu Way, entire mauka side and its terminus." "Kulina Dr., Ewa side, for a distance 120' in the makai direction commencing from 55' mauka of the mauka curbline prolongation of Poopaa Pl." "Luapepe Pl., within its turnaround area." "Panalaau St., both sides, from Palama St. to Sing Loy Ln." "Pauahi St., makai side, for a distance 113' Ewe direction of the Ewa curbline prolongation of Maunakea St." "Sing Loy Ln., both sidr, from Panalaau St. to its terminus."

2. By amending the following items: a) Hauoli St., Ewa side, for a distance 80' makai direction from the

makai curbline prolongation of King St.; to reed: "Hauoli St., Ewa side, for distance 145' makai direction from the makai curbline prolongation of King St."

b) Pahoa Ave., mauka side, for a distance 80' in the Ewa direction from the Ewa curbline prolongation of 16th Ave.; to read: "Pahoa Ave., mauka side, for a distance 160' Ewa direction from the Ewa curbline prolongation of 16th Ave."

c) Pahoa Ave., mauka side, for a distance 80' Ewa direction from the Ewa curbline prolongation of 21st St.; to read: "Pahoa Ave., mauka side, for a distance 120' Ewa direction from the Ewa curbline prolongation of 21st Ave., including shoulder area."

d) Wailepo St., Makapuu side, for a distance 380' mauka direction from the mauka curbline prolongation of Oneawa St.; to read: "Wailepo St., Makapuu side, for a distance 200' mauka direction, commencing from the mauka curbline prolongation of Oneawa St."

e) Wailepo St., Kahuku side, for a distance 185' mauka direction from the mauka curbline prolongation of Oneawa St.; to read: "Wailepo St., Kahuku side, for a distance 255' mauka direction, commencing from the mauka curbline prolongation of Oneawa St."

3. By deleting the following items: "Aiea Hts. h. By amending Schedule XXIV of Sec 15-15.1(4)(1) establishing curb loading zones in the following particulars: 1. By amending subsection (2) freight loading zone by adding thereto

the following items: "Pauahi St., mauka side, for a distance 19' Koko Head direction from a point 107' Koko Head of the Koko Head curbline prolongation of River St." "Pauahi St., mauka side, for a distance 42' Ewa direction from a point 162' Ewa of the Ewa curbline prolongation of Maunakea St." "Wailepo St., Makapuu side, for a distance 44' mauka direction, commencing from a point 200' mauka of the mauka curbline prolongation of Oneawa St."

By amending Schedule XXV of Sec. 15. 15.3(4) establishing official bus stops by adding thereto the following item: "I.eoku St., Koko Head side, for a distance approximately 125' in the makai direction commencing from a point approximately 50' makai of the makai property line of 94-235 Leoku St. (Kaiser's Leeward Clinic)."

By amending Schedule XXVII of Sec. 15-17.1 establishing cross walks by amending item relating to Ala Akau St., 10' wide, centerline 990' east of the east curbline prolongation of Farrington Hwy.; to read: "Ala Akau, 10' wide centerline 915' east of the east curbline prolongation of Farrington Hwy."
