5Ways toGetMoreOutof Linkedin

Article by Dan O’Halloran

You have your LinkedIn profile written up listing your work history, your goals andwhat you’re looking for next. You send connection requests with personalizedmessages (right??) and respond promptly to the ones you receive. So what elsecan you do to grow your network of connections and let everyone know you’re outthere (without bothering them)? There are plenty of new site features you can takeadvantage of in your quest to advance your career.

1. Spice up your work history with images and videoYou’ve listed your experience and cleverly worded your job responsibilities andachievements, but that’s just a big wall of text. Fortunately, LinkedIn recentlyintroduced a new feature to really show off your work: You now have the ability toembed images and video at the end of each job listing.

This is a great opportunity to let prospective employers see your crowningachievement or even an award you’ve won. It works with a wide range of formatsincluding PDFs, Power Point Presentations, pictures and videos. However, it won’tgenerate an image of a website or blog. If you want to show that off, you canalways take a screenshot of it and upload that.

2. Fill out your profile with special events qualificationsWhen editing your profile, you’ll see a box on the right-hand side listing whatother boxes you can add to your page. Projects is a popular one, allowing you tonot only spotlight a big achievement in your career, but you can tag contributorsthat you are connected to as well.

There are also options for many other things that recruiters look for in candidates, including languages known, courses taken and volunteer work. Don’t hesitate tocrow about these achievements. It’s often the very thing that separates you fromother qualified applicants.

3. Follow Channels to keep up on the latest in your fieldLinkedIn has an Influencer program that allows members that are well-known andwell-respected in their fields to get more exposure for articles and shared wisdomthey post on the site. For a broader perspective, subscribe to Channels, whichgroups together Influencers with top news sources to provide inspiration, currentevents and thoughtful articles in subject matters that you may be interested in.

You can find a selection of Channels to follow, including Social Media, SmallBusinesses and Creative Inspiration, on LinkedIn Today. You can also followInfluencers, such as LinkedIn’s CEO Jeff Weiner, Ariana Huffington and Mark

Cuban. Once you follow or subscribe, articles and posts from these sources willshow up in your news feed on your home page of LinkedIn.

Many of the kinds of articles you see here tend to fall in the category of generalcareer advice you can find on a number of popular sites, but it is nice to see it allin one place. And as the Influencer program grows, hopefully there will be morediverse and original content.

4. Reconnect with college friendsFinding old classmates isn’t just a Facebook perk. Last week LinkedIn launchedUniversity Pages. Though primarily designed to help prospective students check outtheir college prospects, they also have the added bonus of listing LinkedIn memberswho are alumni of each institution. And this where it can be valuable to you.

By clicking on “Network” and the “Find Alumni” (or visiting your institution’s homepage if you haven’t added your alma mater), you can see what happened to yourcollege friends and where they ended up in their career. Who knows, they may bein a position to help you out or vice versa. You can even contact current students ifyou need to fill an internship or want to provide mentorship.

5. Pull it all together with LinkedIn ContactsLinkedIn Contacts allows you to import your contacts, calendars and notes fromother services into LinkedIn. You now have one place where all your conversationsacross different platforms are collated into one place. It’s even available to view onthe LinkedIn Contacts mobile app for the iPhone.

On top of that, you will be reminded of the birthdays of your contacts as well aswhen they get a new job or title. Both are perfect opportunities to send acongratulatory message to keep you top in their mind.

LinkedIn can take in information from Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook and iPhone Contacts,as well as scanned business cards from CardMunch or business notes on Evernote. You can even use TripIt to recommend local contacts for you when you travel.

The downside, of course, is handing this kind of information over to LinkedIn. Theydon’t record the contents of your emails, but they do have access to a great deal ofinformation. Think carefully about which accounts you want to include and if theyare all business contacts or a mix of personal and professional. For extraprotection, be sure to enable two-step verification on your LinkedIn account toprevent outsiders from hacking into all of this personal information.

6MistakesYou ShouldNever Make on LinkedInYou've probably heard that social media, especially LinkedIn, can help you find ajob. Whether you are currently employed and open to opportunities or betweenpositions, statistics suggest LinkedIn is a useful tool. A survey of hiring managers byBullhorn Reach says 97.3% of those surveyed used LinkedIn as a recruiting tool in2012. Having a profile is a great first step, but if you're like many professionals, you could probably leverage LinkedIn better to help you reach your career and jobsearch goals. Take a close look at your profile and how you use the network andmake sure you aren't making these mistakes on LinkedIn.

1. Your profile isn't 100% complete. You set up a profile, isn't that enough? Not exactly! Check your profile and makesure LinkedIn tells you it is "100% complete." If it's not, take the steps needed to fillit in. Perhaps you need to reach the required 50 contacts. Have you added youreducation and filled in some skills? Have you included your zip code, and filled inall of the sections? Do you have a Summary and have you described your workexperiences? Don't forget to include a photo; people are much less likely to wantto learn more about you if you don't add a picture to your profile. When yourprofile is not complete, you will be harder to find on LinkedIn, and you don't getthe full benefit of the network.

2. Your profile lacks compelling details and keywords. When recruiters or others search LinkedIn, they see many results listed. What willinspire them to select your profile? To start out, make sure you use a friendly, butprofessional looking photo. Create a headline (the information right under yourname) that makes it clear why someone should want to learn more about you.Don't use your current job title as your headline; be descriptive and tell people whyyou're great at what you do. When you compose your descriptive headline, orpitch, be sure to include keywords, the words people are most likely to use whenthey search for someone with your background. Take advantage of the opportunityto tell your story in your LinkedIn profile.

3. You never modify your profile.Social networks don't work as well when you "set it and forget it." Keep an eye onhow often your profile comes up in search and how many people view yourprofile. (You can see this information when you view your profile - scroll down andlook on the right side of your screen.) If the numbers are low, update your titlesand your headline and tweak your descriptions to try to capture additional searchtraffic.

4. You haven't customized your LinkedIn URL.The most obvious sign of a LinkedIn novice: a non-customized URL. When you edityour profile, look under your photo. If the URL listed is a series of random letters ornumbers, be sure to edit it and select your name, or some version of your name ifyou aren't able to secure your name as a URL. Once you customize your URL, itmakes it a lot easier to share it on your business cards and your resume.

5. You never post updates. There's a reason LinkedIn is called a "social network." The point is to share insightsand information with your network. You can do this via the "update" feature. Whatshould you say? Share ideas, links to interesting articles, and pass along linkspeople in your network share.

6. You're not following companies. You can learn a lot by following a company on LinkedIn. Even if they don'tconsistently update their page, you can easily see people in your network whowork for the company and use the data at your fingertips to see if the companypromotes from within (check "Insights"), and where they tend to recruit. Of course, you'll also see any jobs they post, and have the opportunity to be one of the first toapply.

352013jp31ARTICLE

1/3 page (9.7” x 3”)EMPLOYMENT GUIDE 3-2013

Job Fair announcements usually advise: Bring lots of copies of your resume! And, certainly, you should have some copies with you. But do not think you'll be able to go from employer to employer, dropping them off like Easter eggs. In this digital age, and with our current unemployment, it no longer works that way. Here's some insight into applying for jobs in the digital age.

As with many tasks that require managing large amounts of information, technology has radically changed the way you apply for a job today. Most companies, and virtually all large companies, haveApplicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that allow them to electronically follow each job seeker who applies for a position with their company. For that reason, you will hear many employers ask you to go to theirwebsite and "apply online." This enables them to capture your information in their database and, while it may seem like a hassle -- especially after you spent all that time crafting the perfect resume -- this willactually help you move more quickly through their application process. Once you have entered your information, it can be searched and sorted by recruiters and hiring managers and routed to theappropriate people in a flash.

While I've heard jobseekers deride online applications as a lack of customer service on the part of the employer, it's really quite the opposite. These companies are simply trying to accurately capture andprotect your personal information, and to match your skill set to the appropriate openings in a timely and efficient manner. While this initial process is admittedly less personal than previous methods, itseems a small price to pay for speeding the hiring process along. And the time recruiters save up front can be better spent getting to know a candidate during the interview process.

Online applications can be made by going to a company's web site from your personal computer, by accessing a computer from a library or One-Stop Center, or by going to a company's HR departmentwhere a computer will be made available to you. Be sure to enter your information thoroughly and accurately. That's important for the hiring process and, if you're hired by this company, your informationwill most likely start your personnel file.

Not to worry about your carefully crafted resume; when you've landed the interview, you will still need to present a copy. This document can reflect your personal style and contain any relevant informationthat wouldn't fit in the online format. If an employer at today's job fair asks you to apply online, understand that this is the best way to fill positions quickly. Do not feel you've wasted your time -- far from it!You've gotten valuable face time with recruiters, gotten a feeling for the corporate culture of different organizations and, hopefully, made a positive impression. Strong follow-up should seal the deal!

10 TIPSLike it or not, the Internet and social media provide new avenues for both self-promotion and for malicious attacks. Even if you aren't a celebrity or a politician,it's important to realize online damage to your reputation is fairly easy to facilitate.Maybe someone else wants your job, maybe an old enemy is looking for revenge,or maybe you just have a few skeletons in the closet. Who knows!

Whatever the case may be, getting proactive about protecting your digitalreputation is extremely important. Like a Lego castle, once a reputation is smashedit's almost impossible to put it back together again.

1. Make Managing Your Digital Reputation A PriorityYou can either hire a company to manage your reputation for you or you canmanage it yourself. Look at your Internet profile as a second self, the one you wanteveryone to know rather than your real self. Just as you use office etiquette in theworkplace rather than football game demeanor, it's time to separate your onlinereputation from the real you.

There can be some parallels but your online reputation should say what you want itto say and no more. If you wouldn't want a prospective boss asking you questionsabout it, it shouldn't be online.

Not familiar with computers, search, or social media? Get a pair of nerd glassesand get yourself online and in front of a computer. Learn about social media, online marketing, blogs, and personal branding. These are the new weapons inthe workplace.

2. Be Paranoid About Your Own Computer(s)Set screensaver passwords to lock the system when it's not in use. Set your securitysettings to stealth mode, use at least one firewall and limit your downloads toessential items from reputable sources.

3. Switch Your Operating SystemSwitch either to a Linux, Unix, or Apple operating system and stop using Windows.

4. Schedule Regular CleaningsManage your browser settings and dump your cookie and search history cacheson a regular basis.

5. Don't Post Sensitive InformationUnderstand that really sensitive information doesn't belong on a smartphone or acomputer that ever hooks up to the Internet. Most professionals should have at leasttwo computers: a secure stand-alone and a "public" machine. When transferringfiles stick to a one way flow of information (from the secure machine out but neverin). It should go without saying but sensitive personal information never belongs ona work or employer's machine.

6.Write It OutIf you really need to vent secrets about your private life into words, seriouslyconsider doing so with a pen and paper and then burning it.

7. Set Up Free E-mail AccountsSegmenting your personal life from your work or career persona is a fantastic wayto contain damage if it ever occurs. It also makes any spurious attacks much easierto trace. Use the most obvious combinations for your name and reserve them if theyaren’t already taken. Make a list of these and check them every three months.

Use four of them like this: The first is for friends and family. The second is for yourfinancial self. The third is for business contacts and work. The fourth is for offersand whenever anyone not in the prior categories asks you for an e-mail address.Give each one a completely different set of passwords and security questions.

8. Structure Your Social Media Persona In The Same WayFacebook: family and friends. Twitter: work and career. Namechk (namechk.com)will let you check and establish one user name or vanity name URL across a varietyof social media channels.

9. Think About Starting AWebsite And/Or A BlogBlogs are great because they encourage dialog. Here you want to build the bestyou. This is where you market yourself and accumulate clout in your field ofexpertise. Make sure to link to reputable sources and make an effort to createcontent on a regular basis. Start posting on related sites in your field. Learn anduse a little Search Engine Optimization.

The purpose of all this work is to create an online reputation on the web that willpop up whenever someone searches for your name. It provides a cushion againstany malicious attacks and it will bury bad information. Really diligent searchersmay still find those compromising pictures posted by your old college roommate, but these won't be the first things to pop up when someone searches your name.

10. Honestly Look At Yourself And TheWorst ThingsYou've Ever Done

Try to think about ways this information might come out or how it could be usedagainst you. Don’t exclude public domain information and documents includingdivorce documents. Then prepare a damage control plan ahead of time. Mostlarge companies do this type of planning every year.

Finally, take several hours to figure out what is out there about you already.Advanced Google Search is the deepest search available but there are also waysto search message boards (Boardtracker, Omgili, Boardreader) and social media(social mention) and images (Google Images, Yahoo, Bing, Flickr, and Tineye forreverse search).

The best part of all this online reputation crafting is, once you have it set up, youcan use it forever for personal marketing and career management. In addition, your new skills will be a huge asset to any employer!
