HAVERSTRAW KINGS DAUGHTERS PUBLIC LIBRARY Excellence in Service Since 1895 March / April 2009 FROM THE DIRECTOR On January 1 our library began imposing restrictions on library card holders from both Rose Memorial Library (Stony Point) and Finkelstein Memorial Library (Spring Valley). On January 5 we received permission from the NYS Commissioner of Education also to limit the number of Haverstraw library items these cardholders may check out. The limit is 10. These restrictions will provide better access for our taxpayers to our collections and also provide cost savings. Thankfully, as I write this note we have a reprieve from the brutally cold weather. In order to save on utility bills we have lowered the heat in our main building. Please come prepared with a sweater to ensure your comfort. Like retail stores, we experience theft of our library materials. We have a number of theft deterrents in place but we need you, our taxpayers, to help us thwart and catch the thieves. Our teen DVD and adult DVD collections have been hit several times in recent weeks. If you see anything suspicious while visiting the library, please contact any staff member. We wear name tags. No one needs to be reminded of our economy but the good news is that libraries are busier than ever in these tough times. Here are 5 easy ways to save money at HKDPL: “Subscribe” To The Library Don’t waste money on magazine subscriptions. We have a broad spectrum of the most popular and current magazines available. Older copies can be checked out. Free Movie Rentals Take home your favorite movies and TV series for adults and children. No rental fees!! Free Movies On Our Super Big Screen We have copyright permission to show the latest films. Free Music Downloads Visit our website to download music. Stop by the library to check out our most popular CDs by your favorite artists. Books!, Books! Books! We have them all, from best sellers to classics! I am reminding you to sign up for email notification for yourself and your children. You will get an email notice three days before your borrowed items are due, helping you avoid late fees and save money. Finally, good news our library has been notified that we are recipients of a New York State Library Construction grant in the amount of $5,941, to help replace the brick walkway at the Village Branch. And congratulations to those residents who won the lottery to purchase our older computers and monitors. We made over $3,000 and helped the environment and our community.
