thOn March 2, 2015, Haverford Township became Pennsylvania's 45 Certified Local Government (CLG), and the second in Delaware County. Being a CLG demonstrates the Township's commitment to saving what is important from the past for future generations. The CLG program, which is jointly administered by the National Park Service (NPS) and the State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), provides the Township with (1) access to funding from the Federal Historic Preservation Fund, (2) technical assistance from the SHPOs, (3) access to sustainability programs, and (4) technical assistance and matching grants through the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission's Bureau for Historic Preservation. Attaining CLG status is the result of the efforts of the Haverford Township Historical Commission (HTHC) and the Board of Commissioners. Additional information about Certified Local Governments is available at http://www.nps.gov/clg/. If you would like to contact the Historical Commission, please call the Township Zoning Officer at 610-446-1000, or visit the Township's website at: www.haverfordtownship.org.

A Note from the Township ManagerDear Resident,
On behalf of all the employees of the Township of Haverford, Thank You! We sincerely appreciate all the support and c o o p e r a t i o n d u r i n g t h e
winter season. The past winter was yet another challenging year for our staff to maintain safe travel conditions, but I am confident we were successful. Over the years, the Township and its employees have worked hard to provide the highest quality of services to our residents at the lowest, most responsible cost. If you have an opportunity to drive through Haverford, you will come to experience the excellent care that our employees provide regarding roadway maintenance. This is especially true during the winter months as you will easily be able to tell when you have safely returned to Haverford because our roads are passable when others are not. Furthermore, our efforts in providing snow and ice control over the winter months have earned us such a reputation that should you have children, the Haverford School District will have minimal delays and hardly ever a cancellation of classes because of the weather.
If you currently live in Haverford, or elect to do so in the future, you can rest assured that in an emergency, the Township's police, volunteer fire, and E.M.S. services are only a telephone call away. Please HELP our volunteer
personnel by volunteering and/or contributing to the annual membership fund drive.
I would also like to remind residents about the importance of subscribing to the Township's emergency Notification System. It is an essential service that provides information from our emergency management personnel so our community can be prepared for unexpected emergencies. In the event of an emergency that affects Haverford Township, a subscriber who has provided us with their home and/or cell phone number(s) will be contacted via a pre-recorded voice message about the nature of the event as well as proper response actions that the public should undertake. This service is provided by CodeRED, a strategic voice messaging company. Although the Township has provided CodeRED with a general database of Haverford Township home and business phone numbers, all residents are urged to subscribe all of their phone numbers (home and cell) to ensure that they receive proper emergency voice notifications. Only phone numbers listed to valid Haverford Township addresses may be submitted. To subscribe:https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/45E6A6E6BAB7
If you are looking for an opportunity to participate in recreational activities such as hiking, biking, baseball, tennis, soccer, basketball or yoga, you need only to visit our Community Recreation and Environmental Center, as well as our 34 parks throughout the Township. Our outstanding Recreation Department also has a community magazine that is published periodically. A copy of the
latest edition of the HavaGood Times is linked on our website. I believe you will find it to be most informative and full of community-based information.
As you are aware, recycling is mandatory in Haverford Township. We, as residents and business owners, are to recycle more and keep trash at a minimum. This is a win-win situation for all.
When we are able to provide a greater recycling statistic, we benefit by receiving more grant funds toward the purchase of new equipment and by paying less money in tipping fees to the county.
Haverford Township has begun a Township-wide mailing to all commercial and industrial establishments requesting, under Pa State Law, who they have contracted to collect their recyclables. Responses have been favorable. In addition, this spring, the township will have a part time employee monitor residential streets in the Township and take note of households that do not recycle. Warnings will be given and failure to act will result in a citation.
Our number one goal is public service, and we see it as an honor and privilege to provide it to you. Should you ever need to talk with me personally, please feel free to contact me by telephone at (610) 446-1000, extension 2232.
Sincerely,Larry Gentile

As the weather starts to turn hot, there is a tendency to want to make our outdoor living areas more livable. Often times, we are in a rush to start our "To-Do" projects that have grown over the winter months without much of a second thought.
Did you apply for and receive a permit or even know that a permit was required? A permit is required for new construction, additions, alterations, and any project that requires structural changes. Building permit applications are available on the Township website or at the Township office. Check with the Community Development Department before you make alterations to your home or business. Check for standing water at these spots at least once a week, especially after rainfall:
Birdbaths · pet water dishes · saucers under flowerpots (empty regularly or fill with sand) · open garbage cans · toys or other materials left outdoors · sheets of plastic, tarps and Jacuzzi covers · gutters clogged with debris or not graded for proper drainage · old tires (take to tire shop to be recycled or drill drainage holes) · litter (eggs can hatch in a pool as small as a bottle cap!) · holes where trees have been removed (fill with soil) · lawn or landscaping depressions · floating debris in ponds · ornamental pools (stock with fish or aerate) · swimming pools (maintain proper chorine levels year round & make sure filter is operating from May through October) To avoid being bitten:
Wear light colored clothing, and long sleeves & pants when possible.Repair tears in window screens to keep mosquitoes from sneaking into your home.Stay indoors at sunrise, sunset and early evening when mosquitoes are most active.
Take the BITE Out of Summer - Safely!Warmer weather brings baseball games, backyard grilling, enjoying our parks & trails a n d a l s o t h e r e t u r n o f mosquitoes.
These insects are not just annoying; they're also known to transmit viruses and parasites to humans and animals. West Nile Virus, a mosquito borne disease that can make you seriously ill and even cause death, is our biggest concern here. PA and DelCo monitor and treat as a last resort using pesticides only when there is public health risk. The best defense is prevention - modifying or eliminating standing water breeding sites at your home is the bes t long- term, environmentally friendly solution. Where standing water cannot be eliminated, placing Bti "dunks" (available at hardware stores) in s t a n d i n g w a t e r p o o l s i s a n environmentally friendly way to prevent mosquito growth. Also keep grass clipping out of the streets which wash into storm sewers and provide the pe r f ec t b reed ing g round fo r mosquitoes.
Use yellow "bug" lights outdoors -they attract fewer mosquitoes (but t h e y a r e N O T r e p e l l e n t s ) Carefully use insect repellent effective for mosquitoes with the active ingredients DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), DEET ( N , N - d i e t h y l - m - t o l u a m i d e ) , Picaridin (KBR 3023), or Oil of L e m o n E u c a l y p t u s [ a c t i v e ingredient: p-menthane 3,8-diol ( P M D ) ] f o l l o w i n g instructions. Where covered, apply to clothing instead of skin.

Delaware County Household Hazardous Waste Collection EventsThink Globally, Act Locally! If improperly discarded, household products containing toxic chemicals can be a threat to people, pets and the environment. Never dispose of hazardous materials in the trash as they may harm your sanitation workers or result in a collection vehicle fire. It is also unsafe to pour HHW down a sink or storm drain as it will end up polluting our drinking water.

Support Haverford Township Adult School
The Haverford Township Adult School is a private, non-profit, educational organization which seeks to
promote adult education and recreation for Haverford Township and surrounding communities. The school
is governed by an all volunteer board of directors and is entirely self-supporting.
It receives no financial support from the school district, recreation department or taxpayers. HTAS enriches
the community by providing more than one hundred low-cost classes each fall and spring semester. The
increasing overhead, including instructor and office staff salaries, facility charges, and production and
mailing of brochures make it increasingly difficult to provide high-quality classes in a cost-efficient manner.
Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to help us continue to offer quality classes that you
have come to expect! You can donate directly from our website at www.haverfordadultschool.org.

Insurance Reminder
Do you have sewer backup/flood insurance?IMPORTANT INSURANCE
COVERAGE NOTICE/REMINDER
Township residents must be aware that they should review their homeowner's, flood and sewer backup insurance coverage with their agent/insurance companies in order to properly protect their personal residence, probably the most valuable tangible asset that we all have.
Article I, Section 149-3, subsection C (2) Sewer Service Regulations of the Township Code states that all sewer service laterals from the Township's sewer, regardless of location, are
the property of the customer and/or owner and shall be maintained by him in good condition and repair.
Please pay particular attention to the following coverages:
Coverage for Sewers, Drains and Sump Pumps:This valuable coverage is not included under your standard homeowner's policy but can be
purchased by endorsement for an additional premium.
The Township is not responsible for damages caused by sewers, drains and sump pumps except under limited/special circumstances provided by the PA Municipal Immunity laws.
Flood Coverage:Flood coverage is not included under your homeowner's policy. However, flood insurance
is available under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be obtained through your insurance agent or broker.
The Township does not provide flood insurance.

Where Are They Now?
Our community has experienced many changes within its Emergency Medical Services over the last few months. These changes include an expansion of our existing partnership with the Universi ty of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) and increasing the capability of units to Advanced Life Support level by partnering Paramedic with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to create a "MICU" or Mobile Intensive Care Unit.
Haverford Township is served by two of these MICU's, 24 hours a day, every day. In addition, the Township provides an on duty supervisor for these units to assist the MICU's in difficult calls and to handle the administrative aspects of caring for the Township's residents and visitors.
Staging emergency services is the key to reducing the time that it takes to respond to an
emergency. A location must be capable of properly storing supplies, housing the vehicles from weather, and allow for proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment. The base must also serve as quarters for the staff to work on a patient's chart, documenting the care that was provided and sharing the information with the receiving care givers to insure a continuum of care.
Haverford College has generously provided free housing for Medic 108-7 on the 800 block of Ardmore Avenue. The College donated an apartment unit as a medic base, space for a free standing garage, amenities, and support to guarantee the quick response and secure staging of unit. This unit's primary coverage area includes the northern and eastern areas of the Township.
Medic 108-7A is stationed at the Bon Air Fire Company (Station 58) on Royal Avenue near Steel Road. This station provides similar amenities to that of the other base but also houses our oxygen filling station and, should t h e n e e d a r i s e , t h e d e p a r t m e n t ' s decontamination systems.
Amidst these significant changes some things have remained the same.
Call 911 for any type of emergencyassistance Fire, Police, or Medical Emergency.
EMS will continue to respect your choice of hospital destination.
Our outs tanding Rescuers have b e e n r e t a i n e d b y U P H S a n d continue to serve you on our EMS units.
The Administrative offices remain in the Quatrani Building (the single s t o r y a n n e x b e h i n d t h e m a i n Township Building) and can be reached at (610) 446-1000.
If you have any questions, concerns, comments, or suggestions for our Emergency Services Department, please contact Chief James P. McCans at (610) 446-1000 or by email at [email protected].
