Education Week - Experience our Excellence

Education Week is to celebrate and showcase the excellent learning opportunities that are available to all students in public education especially at Warren Central School.

We are looking forward to having the families and community of Warren participate in our open learning areas day next Wednesday 3 August.

We will be having open learning areas’ experiences from 12:30 - 1:20, enjoying a relaxing and inviting atmosphere with our picnic lunch from 1:20 - 1:50 and then wrapping up with an Education Week Assembly from 2:00 - 2:50.

We are looking forward to seeing you at Warren Central

School.

Cup of noodles - NO thank you Could we please ensure that students are not sent to school with the cup of noodles that require boiling or hot water to prepare the noodles. This is due to the WHS issue of hot or

boiling water in the playground. We would not want to see an accident involving a student being injured by hot or boiling water. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and please remember on these cold winters’ days that the school canteen has some great warm food for our students to eat.

TERM 3 Here we GO! This term is always an exciting term for both students and teachers. We have multiple sporting activities available for students and some of the regional and state finals are on as well where WCS is represented with pride and passion by our students.

We have some exciting educational opportunities and excursions coming up for all students and this is our last term for Year 12 to develop and deepen their knowledge and understanding of their courses before the HSC exams begin next term.

NAIDOC WEEK NAIDOC Week will be taking place in Week 8, 5 - 9 September with some great ceremonies and activities for students, families and community members in which to participate

in. We will provide more information about the events in the coming weeks.

Professional Learning and Development The staff of WCS will be actively engaged in various educational and professional learning activities which will complement and ensure success in meeting our key areas and goals within our School Plan.

SASS Recognition Week We will also be recognising and acknowledging our SASS staff for all of the effort, work and support they provide for our students, families and staff. This will be the week of 29 August – 2 September.

Marathon Health Our wellbeing focus continues with Marathon Health returning to assess our students. There is a community

meeting with Hear our Hearts community bus on 8 August to discuss their future plans. The RAISE Mentoring program enters its second term of supporting students and Barnardo's will continue to deliver age appropriate programs to selected years.

Welcome Mr Nathan Hinze We welcome a new face to our outstanding school staff. Mr Nathan Hinze has moved from the Gosford area on the Central Coast of NSW. Nathan is married with a 15 month old son. Nathan is enjoying Warren immensely with the community being so friendly and the students great.

Welcome back Mrs Appleyard We welcome back Mrs Shannon Appleyard back into the Learning Support role.

Your local Vinnies Centre is always looking for more volunteers to assist them in their work. Men and women of all

ages and denominations are welcome and encouraged to become volunteers at our Warren Vinnies Centre. Even a

couple of hours a week would be a great help. Your local Vinnies Centre has a very friendly, social environment and the

work provides a special sense of satisfaction you get from helping others and learning new skills. Various tasks include

sorting donated goods, serving at the counter, clerical, basic computer, interviewing and listening to people in need.

If you are interested in volunteering, drop into the Vinnies Centre, or telephone the Centre on 02 6847 4883.

We would love to hear from you.

Thank you.

Marathon Health Hearing will be returning to Warren Central School in week 6, Tuesday 23 August, to undertake Hearing Screening Tests. This service is free of charge, and if needed offer a direct link to appointments with an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist in Dubbo.

Please complete the attached referral form and return it to your child's classroom teacher, or Mrs Brooker via the front office.

TED Martin - Community Memorial Service We would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Ted Martin. We greatly appreciated the effort and support from all who were involved in creating the memorial service last Friday. Ted, you will be sadly missed.

Science, Maths And PDHPE News The SMAP faculty welcomes the arrival of Indigo Lola Hinton to Kate and Ian at the end of last term. Ian is currently on parental leave until week 3 and we wish to thank Erin Wise for looking after all of his classes. Indigo is getting along very well and doted on by both Mum and Dad.

Sport Choices for Term 3 Sport choices for this term have been completed and students have chosen either Gym, Indoor Sports, Netball or Touch Football.

Please make sure that your student is prepared for Friday Sport in periods 3 and 4.

7 - 12 Sporting Teams Sporting teams will be travelling again this term. We are travelling to Coonabarabran, combining with Trangie Central for Women’s League Tag on Thursday 28 July and Orange for round 2 of the Boy’s CHS State Squash, on Friday 5 August.

On Friday 29 July, a small number of athletes are competing at Western Region CHS Athletics Carnival at Dubbo. We wish all of our competing students the best.

Maths In Mathematics all students from year 7 to 11 have an assessment investigation task due in week 3 and Extension 1 Maths has a second task due in Week 4. Please encourage your students to complete these as they are worth 15% of the assessment marks. Also do not forget about the requirement that students must wear leather shoes or boots for Science practical lessons. These can be kept at school if you wish.

Year 12 Trial Exams Year 12 are getting ready for their trial examinations in all of week 6 and the Monday of week 7 this term. An exam timetable will be out at the end of this week.

Year 11 Maths Students visit Macquarie Toyota On Friday 22 July the Year 11 General Mathematics class visited Macquarie Toyota to investigate costs of buying and running a car. The excursion was designed to provide practical examples of what is being learnt as part of the “Mathematics in Driving” unit in General Mathematics. Brett Williamson discussed all aspects of budgeting, accessing money and running a car as a young person and had the group enthralled for the entire discussion.

What the students learnt formed the basis for a project they are undertaking in Mathematics in Driving to help them prepare for the next stage of their lives. The school wishes to thank Brett and Macquarie Toyota for their time and expertise. The students now have a much more realistic expectation regarding car ownership.

The unit involves buying a car, the costs involved including stamp duty, registration and insurance and how it will depreciate. Students will also learn how to calculate blood alcohol content, stopping distances and fuel economy.

Year 11 Biology Year 11 Biology students Matthew Marks and Tristan Gale doing a practical to find out the relationship between surface area and volume ratios using pink agar.

K-6 news Education Week

Come and experience a wonderful time with your student looking over work samples, observing a class in action, sharing a picnic

lunch with all the staff and students and being a part of our K-12 Assembly, recognising students’ achievements. Everyone is welcome to come along and be a part of a wonderful afternoon on Wednesday 3 August starting at 12:30pm.

PBL Bands The K - 6 department is trialling a different approach this term to the handling of bands. Students are continually losing bands having them slipping off small

wrists, breaking when playing or being misplaced at home and on the school buses.

Each classroom teacher has a bag for every student in the class and the bands will be placed in these bags daily and changed

regularly. Students will be kept updated on how many bands they have and where they are up to with changes.

Positive Behaviour for Learning - PBL Our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) focus is: to reduce the incidents of inappropriate language.

Stage 3 Excursion The Stage 3 excursion this year is to Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Recreation Centre near Newcastle from 14 November through to 18 November.

Although a final cost has not been finalised due to on-going fund raising activities please start paying some money each fortnight towards your final balance. The total cost of the excursion, per child, will not be under $250.00 so please start on your payments now so it is not such a financial burden on families towards the end of Term 3.

Kindergarten Beans Students in Kindergarten Beans have been learning to make patterns during Mathematics. They have experimented with twos, threes and fours patterns using different materials and resources.

With Miss Williams students have been studying the unit ‘What’s it made of?’ As part of this engaging unit students had to design and create their own playground.
