Six years ago, The Calgary Foundation invited Calgarys
autism-serving organizations to come together and clariy the
range o services oered.
Two years ater the initial meeting, the Autism Calgary
Association (ACA) applied or a grant to work with other
organizations to produce a sel-help guide or amilies
aected by ASD.
During that collaborative process, ACA observed a lack
o connections, inconsistency in inormation delivered to
amilies, and a limited understanding o other support
available to clients.
In the all o 2009, the Foundation enthusiastically supported
a new initiative to strengthen relationships and build new
partnerships within the autism-serving community.
Shortly thereater, a TCF donor enquired about opportunities
to support the autism community. TCF was able to connect
that donor with this initiative who amazingly doubled the
initial grant and supported the initiative or two more years.
CalgaryCollaBoratesShrinking resources and an increased demandor services have inspired nonprots acrossCanada to nd new solutions. Manyorganizations are becoming moreinterested in joining networks to shareresources and space to reducecosts and increase impact.
To provide insight and developknowledge about collaborativepractices, TCF supported the creationo a new report, sh sc,sh spc: l h c cb h c.
With more than 200 participating organizations, this report gives a comprehensive view o howto move orward with shared resources inCalgary.

FundersCollaBorateDid you know Calgarys waste water
reaches Lake Winnipeg?
Lake Winnipegs watershed stretching
rom Calgary to Edmonton, rom the
Crowsnest Pass to Lake Superior is
visibly deteriorating. The watershed is in
rapid decline due to pollution, population
pressures and water diversion.
The main threat is eutrophication: an excess
o nutrients causing an overgrowth o
algae. Too much algae consumes an
excess o oxygen and suocates
sh and plants living in
shallower areas.

Serious threats to our water supply
have motivated Community Foundations in
the watershed to come together and work
as a team. TCF and 19 other Community
Foundations are collaborating to nd the
most eective way to raise awareness andsupport change that needs to happen.
The Calgary Foundation has taken the
lead on a public awareness campaign.
TCF challenged a number o Community
Foundations to support Dr. James Byrne

Choking Lake Winnipeg aims to enlighten

In the all o 2009, the Calgary Chamber
o Voluntary Organizations (CCVO)
assessed the eects o the economic
downturn on Albertas nonprots
and charities. Their research ound:
Nonprofts and charities have been
adapting to the recession, but they
are stretched to the limit. They have
little capacity to adjust to increased
demand or reduced unding as the
greatest impact o the recession
hits the sector in 2010.
As a community leader, The Calgary
Foundation is partnering with donorsand unders, nonprots, government, or
prots and the community to ndnew
solutions and buildnew connections
integral to maintaining a healthy
community.
In December 2009, TCF and Mount
Royal Universitys Institute or Nonprot
Studies organized a ull day orum,
Building a New Road
Reshaping Relationships to
Sustain the Collective Impact oCalgarys Nonproft Sector.
The event brought 100 community
infuencers together to build newrelationships and move promising
solutions orward.
By asking, What transormations and
what conversations are needed in the
nonprot sector? we challenged a critical
mass o creative people to nd a better
route to travel one that will sustain the
positive impact o Calgarys nonprot

concerned about their overall health and lack o tness.
The Centre also ound the new generation o boomers have a strong desire to
stay active, but may not have the nancial resources to access acilities.
To address this need, Kerby Centre received a grant rom TCF to develop

are between the ages o 15 and 23.
To promote inclusion and discussion among
this group, Aspen Family and Community
Network Society approached TCF with a
creative project - to research the experiences
o Calgarys immigrant youth and make an educational documentary.
Growing Up Among Strangers tracks stories o young newcomers and their
struggle to reconcile the world at home with the world at school.
These are voices that need to be heard, says Calgary lmmaker, Nina Sudra,
who grew up in a Hindu household and attended Catholic School. So manyyouth are straddling two cultures or... identities... trying to balance both.
Growing Up Among Strangers was nominated or our Rosie Awards at the

The Hangar already oers programs in areas o visual arts, DJ

going green For HealtHy Healing
my HealtHy
HomeAter The Calgary Foundationgranted to Green Calgarys
Healthy Home Calgary Program,
my curiosity led me to sign up or
a ree consultation o my little,
old, draty house in Inglewood.
From what I had learned, Green
Calgary was going to come to my
house and talk about reducing
my ecological ootprint.
The experience was amazing.
I welcomed Ami and Lauren into
my home. They began by asking
or my last energy bill. Ater
taking a quick look, Ami asked
i I had started using an electric
heater in January. In act I had,
and I learned right away how
energy defcient they were.
They proceeded to examine
everything rom the artifcial
scents I was using, to my plastic
containers, cleaning supplies,
windows, and shower head. I
couldnt believe how much I
was learning.
Their recommendations showed
me that simple alterations would
result in a positive and lasting
change. I learned how to improve
the air quality o my home, reduce
energy and water consumption,
and make sustainable ood choices.
Since their frst visit, Ive
installed a composter and a rain
barrel in my backyard, made my
own laundry detergent, replaced
my air resheners with essential
oils, changed my shower head and
switched over to energy-saving
light bulbs.
Im really looking orward to
the second visit so that Ami and
Lauren can walk through my
house and see that Ive done
my homework. I hope they are
okay with the act that Im still
not ready to let go o my vanilla
scented candles!
Teri Shortreed
Since the program was launched in
2009, the Healthy Homes team has
visited 382 homes all over the city.
They have installed over 1000 energy
saving light bulbs, 355 low-fow
shower heads and 260 compost bins.
