P residents Message Hello Havasu 4

Wheelers. As this is

my final President‘s

Message I want to take this

opportunity to thank each and

every one of you for giving me the

honor and pleasure of serving you

over the past year. I don‘t know if it

showed but I had a great time! The

tempo of activities this year was

absolutely incredible as the club conducted scores of runs,

coordinated multiple events, and tackled seemingly over-

whelming challenges to keep our trails open from proposed

BLM closures. From what I saw every member of the club

participated in some fashion to assist in this efforts. To every

member of the Havasu 4 Wheelers - ‗Thank you, you are a

great group!‘

I need to recognize the Board of Directors who worked so hard

coordinating and facilitating all of our diverse activities while

faithfully assisting me along the way. I also want to thank the

club members who served as committee chairs, as committee

members, event coordinators, trail bosses, and as tail gunners

during my term. You all performed an exemplary job ensuring

that the club‘s members had numerous 4X4 runs to enjoy and

fun events to attend. I hope you will continue to do so. And to

those thinking of serving or helping on a committee to please do

so. This club is great and you will find your service very

rewarding.

Congratulations to the new President and Board members for

2011-2012. The mantle has been passed with confidence that

your dedication and teamwork will keep this Club viable and

strong. I also ask that all Club members volunteer and help the

new officers and club in any way you can. Only with your

support will they be successful and our club remain strong for

the critical challenges ahead. Remember you only get out of a

club what you put in so get involved.

On a personal note I appreciate those who have assisted me

with council on difficult decisions. And to my wife Kathlyne,

thank you for the support and understanding.

See you on the trail,

Bruce

High Line Run

N ine jeeps left the end of Bison Monday, January 31, at

9:00 a.m. with 11 members and 1 guest. We arrived

at a Mine 4.62 miles from our starting point parked,

investigated, and did a short clean up of area. Our next stop

was the water catchment for lunch and conversation. After

our stop at the old house foundation we went on to‖ You Go

Falls‖ entertainment. Thanks to Snake‘s great spotting we

left with no mishaps and ended our run at Havasu Heights

( 23.5 mi.). Thank you Ladell and Judy Olson for tail

gunning and Snake and Willie Williams for carrying the

AED.

Trail Talk - 3 - March 2011

Portland Mine February 3, 2011

T he 12 jeeps, 24 members and 4 guests scrambled to

depart Terrible‘s at 8:30 AM. No hurry really, we

all just wanted to get in our jeeps as it was 22

degrees outside! The 25 mph wind didn‘t help either but

being the crazy people we are this was shrugged off as a

mere nuisance. We stopped at Kingman for a break and

noticed the island under the gas station canopy was

completely frozen over. We then drove north on 93 to

Cottonwood Road and exited to air down. It was still cold.

We drove west and stopped at Lost Cabin Spring to

inspect the rancher‘s windmill. The frozen over cattle

water trough had ice 4‖ thick. We all discovered that "ten

- one hundred‘s" were now ‗challenging‘ using ice cold

fingers. We then descended down a long winding canyon

crossing over to the west side of the Black Mountains.

Arriving at the Portland Mine we drove down into the

mine itself and had lunch at the bottom. The miners had

removed 1,000,000 tons of rock in the 40‘s and it made for

a big hole in the ground. After lunch we explored some of

the older workings and relics from the early 1900‘s. By

1:30 PM we had reached Katherine‘s Landing with some

off to Bullhead for shopping and the rest to Laughlin for

fun. Thank you‘s go to Ladel & Judy Olson for tail

gunning, Andy Lucas for the AED, and Kevin Hoppe &

Terry Harstad helping me air up after my compressor line

exploded.

Moss Wash

O n Feb. 7, 3 vehicles met at Love‘s on I-40. We left

Love‘s at 8:30 and proceeded to the Petro station at

exit 66 on I-40 to air down, top off, and use the

facilities.

We proceeded on Blake Ranch Road, turning on to the

Moss Wash Trail and on to the Gold King Mansion

Historic Site. We continued on to an area of black walnut

trees for lunch.

As we were ahead of schedule, we took some side trails for

exploration. At the Flag Mine Road, we went south to

drop down into the Walnut Creek Survivalist Camp and

out to I-40 at the Griffin Road exit. Andy Lucas carried

the AED and was tail gunner.

Anniveary Trail

F ebruary 7, 2011 thirteen jeeps arrived at the Elks

parking lot, aired down, and a drivers meeting took

place. We then proceeded up El Dorado Wash and

onto the trail. Now this trail includes some rocky areas, a

number of ups & downs, and a number of off camber

turns. As we encountered these obstacles, there were a

few Oooos and Aaaahs, as well as total silence when going

down some of the steep inclines that had some stair steps

on them. As we exited this area, we ran some ridges

down to the North side of Standard Wash, which is a

fairly flat and by this time it was lunch time. With

everyone‘s tummy full, we continued up the wash,

through some little rocky squeeze‘s and onto the Gold

Spring Trail and stopped at the spring for a look see.

Then it was back down into some more rocky up‘s &

downs to a nice little water fall, that also has a go around.

Everyone did a great job on this, and while we were up on

top talking, a fellow made the comment, ―I think my tie

rod is bent‖, and of course we all had to look at it, and

sure enough, it looked like an archers bow. Well I

happen to carry a spare in our jeep, and 30 min. later we

were on our way again. Thanks to Ed Heil and Jim

Hofstetter for the wrenching. Once we hit Dutch Flat

Road, it was down and out, ending at Challenger Dr.

Thanks to John Strong for tail gunning, and the rest of

the group, you were all a lot of fun.

Lost Trails / Mine Shack February 10, 2011

We had 19 Jeeps on this run. We started at Standard

Wash at 9 am and proceeded to Lost Trails then headed

south and hooked up with the mine shack trail. This

made the run a little more interesting rather than

running the wash the entire way to the mine shack. We

got to the shack about noon and proceeded to fire up the

BBQ with the help of Ron Satterfield and Gary Wiskus,

they also supplied the BBQ brickets. We brought what

we thought was enough hot dogs to feed everyone, which

it was, but not by much. To our surprise we went

through 60 hot dogs. After lunch we started back and

stopped at another mine shack made out of tin. The

weather was perfect blue sky and no wind. We came out

at the scenic turn out and aired up about 3:30 pm. We all

had a lot of fun and yes we will do this run again. It is

nice to see that the cabin has not been vandalized it

really shows people do respect our desert and we can all

share it together.

Special thanks to Ron Satterfield and Gary Wiskus for

helping with the BBQ, also with this large group we had

a middle tail gunner Ron and Sally Satterfield and rear

tail gunner Snake and Willie Williams.

Whipple Wash February 12, 2011

T was a beautiful Saturday morning when 9 Jeeps met

at the Scenic turnout. New members and members to

be were introduced as were non members along for

the ride. Before proceeding across the dam, a little side trip

to a scenic turnout overlooking the dam was made for a

Kodak opt. At this point a new members Jeep was inspected

for the safety requirements , and previously promised items

to have been installed were not. Continuation of the run was

denied and the member left in a huff. We crossed the damn

and we proceeded to traverse toward our air up site. Snake

provided interesting information relative to the waterway

and airstrip. After airing down we proceeded long a wash to

Black Meadows Landing, thence a one eighty and back to the

Havasu Palms turnoff.

An easy run was made, viewing the tomb of Charlie Silver

Tongue and Matt Dillard overlooking Havasu Palms. Lunch

break was in the drive between the picturesque rocks. A stop

at "Lutz" cave was made where Willie showed her expertise

by driving into the cave driving her very own Jeep. How-

ever, prudence over virtue dictated a change in drivers and

Snake exited the cave. A thunderous ovation from the

spectators greeting the two very experienced drivers was

heard.

Driving thru Whipple Wash proved to be relatively easy

compared to past experiences, and all exited and proceeded

to the air up spot at which time the run was completed.

However Mike Yahrmarkt led the group (minus me) to an

unnamed mine after the run.

Of interest on the run we saw coyotes and Donkeys. The

weather was great as were all those who participated.

Thanks to all, and special thumbs up to Snake for his

"inspection" and to Mike for his ever excellent tailgunning.

Tom Cat Pass

O n Feb. 10th, 4 Jeeps met at the end of Paseo Del

Oro Dr. at 9:00 to start the trip on Tom Cat

Pass. Expecting to be at the mountain top at

11:45, we were surprised to be there at 10:45. After

spending some time viewing L.H.C and surrounding

area from the top, we started back down looking for a

lunch spot.

With no problems on the trip, we were back at the air

up spot by 1:30. Thanks to Andy Lucas for carrying

the AED, and Jim Bowen for tail gunning.

Cat-tail February 8, 2011

T his was advertised as a small run size that would

give us time to ―play and practice‖ on the

different obstacles. With only 7 Jeeps in our

groups we were all able to ―play or practice‖ on the

different challenges Cat-tail has to offer. We had one

―pretty much stock Jeep‖ with us that was able to see

just what kinds of things ―sorta kept him from doing

various things‖. Do I need larger tires? A belly-up?

Lockers? It was fun for all watching and encouraging

our ―newer member‖ see what his stock Jeep would,

and would not do.

Weather was great, we really had no problems at all

with any of the various ways folks wanted to try and do

each obstacle. We even had time for some to try it one

way—then go back and try it another way!

Great run—great group of people-good weather—what

more could you ask for? Thanks Judy for helping

Ladell tailgun!

Gold Standard Mine February 14, 2011

I t was the perfect Valentine‘s Day gift to ourselves

as 8 jeeps, 13 Havasu 4 Wheelers, and 2 guests

departed the Scenic Turn Out southbound to

Parker. We went south on 95 to Parker, crossed over to

California, and then west on 62 for 8 miles. At the

turnoff we aired down and took the trail which winds

along the western edge of the Whipple Mountains

Wilderness. A few miles down the trail we headed off to

inspect the abandoned workings of the Twin Load

Mine. A nice mine adit led to a crystal covered wall. On

the road again we stopped at Chamber‘s Well which

the Indians and then prospectors used. We then had

lunch under the impressive headframe of the American

Eagle Mine. Off again and then up a canyon to the Gold

Standard Mine where beautiful white and blue ore

samples were abundant. We came out on US 95 and

then headed home. No Cow Bell or No Bell nominations

to report. ―Thanks‖ to Rodger Delk for Tail Gunning.

“Trail Talk” Safety Rant of the Month – NUTS & BOLTS

Have you ever thought of what is

holding your off road vehicle together?

And the difference between driving

your family sedan down a paved street,

and driving your off road vehicle out

through the desert on a washboard

road, over rocks, up and over boulders,

waterfalls, through squeezes, and off camber twisted

turning canyons ?

Yes …………. it‘s the nuts and bolts that hold this

phenomenal machine together. Another thought, when

was the last time you crawled under your vehicle and

checked these little guy‘s ? Have you ever thought of the

stresses and strains you are placing on these items ?

What prompted this note, is an incident that just

occurred and it got me to reflect back in time, and it

dawned on me that there have been a number of

situations where break downs have happened as a result

of a lack of maintenance, i.e. shock absorbers falling out

of their mounts, track bars and control arms coming out

of their mounting, batteries flopping around under the

hood, wheels and spare tire carriers falling off etc. And

one other thought, when changing and/or remounting a

wheel onto the axel, be sure the wheel is seated against the

brake drum and/or the rotor face before letting down the

jack. If it‘s not, no matter how tight you get the lug nuts,

the wheel will not seat it‘s self with the weight of the

vehicle on the axel studs. And after the first several

revelations of the wheel on the ground, the wheel will

wobble and elongate the holes in the wheel, and the wheel

can ultimately come off. All of these incidents could have

been prevented with a little time spent, not just looking at

the fasteners, but by breaking out the tool box, and

crawling under your rig and tightening up everything in

sight. And while you are under there, look at the welding

on frame brackets for cracks in and around the welds.

Yah - - - I know, it‘s one of those things that should be

done, but I‘ll get to it in the next day or so after I get this

or that done. Well with my age and memory, somehow

that day just sort of - - - - - - -well you know.

One last thought, I would rather enter into this chore on

my own terms, in my nice clean warm garage with the

stereo, than laying in the dirt with little creepy crawlers,

and the wind blowing dust in my eyes, and dirt sticking to

any and everything with grease or oil on it. Now that I

have written this, sure as shooting, something will fall off

of my jeep, and I‘ll have egg on my face.

Cooks Night Out

O ur monthly Cook‘s Night Out was held at Place

To Be on Tuesday, February 22 with 19 club

members attending. We had several new

members joining us for the first time. Gino, Carla,

Heather and Vinnie treated us very well with an array of

delicious food and drink. An area was set aside for us

and it made it very easy to have conversations as we ate.

Our next Cook‘s Night Out will be held on March 22 at

Black Mesa

O n February 18th, 14 jeeps met at Sara Park to do

the run. With the upcoming fireworks there wasn‘t

a lot of parking at the park but we managed to

squeeze into an area that worked just fine for our

purposes. Not wanting to regroup on the highway,

everyone was given exact instructions on where to turn,

the option of a 10-100 at the gas stations in Parker, and

the regroup location of Shea Rd. When the 13 jeeps

arrived we headed down Shea Rd. You notice there were

14 jeeps on the run…..I forgot to count us so we took off

without number 14 jeep. Shame on me…..better brush up

on my math skills. Thank goodness jeep 14 headed down

Shea Rd and managed to catch up with us at the air down

spot, so this story had a happy ending.

In my opinion this run has the most spectacular views as

you are on top of mesa near the Bill Williams River. We

stopped at 3 over look areas. One looks down on Mineral

Wash, MHM mine tailings and part of the Bill Williams

River. Another one looks down on Hwy 95 as it crosses

over the Bill Williams River, and the third is the most

spectacular. You can see the lake, the air strip at MWP,

Parker and Lake Havasu City. WOW. The only draw-

back to this run is the rocky, bumpy terrain but the views

make it all worthwhile.

Everyone did a great job driving and absolutely no

problems on the run. However I can‘t say the same for the

trip home. Being the last one to leave the air up spot, as

we headed down Shea Rd. we saw about 7 jeeps pulled

over to the side. Come to find out one of the jeeps heard a

funny noise in the rear of his jeep and as he got off the

road his left rear tire went rolling down the road and of

course that side of his jeep made and immediate drop to

the dirt. With all the helpful people on the run, the spare

was soon filling the tire void, we robbed a lug nut from

one of the other tires, (so now we had 4 nuts) and we were

soon on the way. However that is not the end of the story.

We hadn‘t even gotten to the stop light in Parker when we

saw 3 of the lug nuts come flying off. We retrieved them,

put them back on and made it to the gas station. The jeep

was then jacked up, tire removed and reseated and away

we went making several stops to check the lug nuts which

remained tight and that is the rest of the story.

Thank you to everyone for coming on the run. Thanks to

those who helped with the tire situation, and Thank You

to Gerry Smock for being tail gunner.

K-2 Run February 17, 2011

T he wind was supposed to be blowing—but the

weather was great! K-2 is always such a beautiful

run when we are all at the top and soaking in the

view! The view from up top goes all the way down to

Parker Dam, the Dude Ranch (Franconia Wash

direction-where we have lunch runs to), the Bullhead

area, and the Kingman area!

The trail over the ―back of Crossman‖ was as pretty as

ever. The trail up the wash to K-2 was in better shape

than it has been for years. Our quad and side-by-side

friends have stacked enough rocks to make many of the

areas much easier. The climb up to the top is as narrow

as it has always been, but the one very narrow (read

dangerous) spot is in such good shape that by being

careful, it is almost a non-event now.

We had no problems (since my very fine tutoring by

several members on how to keep a Jeep right side up)

and everyone had a great time. Thanks to Mike

Yahrmarkt for tail gunning and helping us know how

close we were to the edge by relating just how it is

possible to measure 1 millionth of an inch!

all questioned thoroughly but we had no firewood to declare

so we were sent on our way south to Wyatt Earp‘s house.

We aired down and unlocked our front sway bars in front of

this historic spot. Next we headed out on the old historic

Blythe to Vidal Wagon Road. This trail starts out as a

well traveled route but then slowly degenerates into a

lonely track as it heads into the Riverside Mountains

Wilderness area. We forged numerous wash crossings

and then starting climbing the old mining road. We entered

a canyon and proceeded along a very narrow shelf

road which had been constructed by the miners in the

1880‘s and was supported by hand stacked rocks. By lunch

we had reached our destination – the Gold Rice Mine on the

top of a mountain ridge. We circled the wagons to block the

wind and ate our goodies while wondering how the miners

were able to get here, dig all the tunnels and survive under

such primitive conditions so far from civilization. On the

way out almost everyone remarked how much smoother the

trail was now that we were all carrying an extra ballast of

pretty rocks & mineral specimens. As promised ―solitude‖

was the most outstanding feature of this run second only to

clear blue sky, fresh air and unlimited vistas. It doesn‘t get

better than that. Thanks go to Joe & Cindy Egilske for Tail

Gunning and Rodger Delk for carrying the AED. No Cow

Bell or No Bell nominations to report.

HAVASU 4 WHEELERS, PROUD MEMBERS

LEAVE A GOOD IMPRESSION

- HAVASU 4 WHEELERS TRAIL RATINGS - - Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.

RATING DESCRIPTION

1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.

2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.

3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.

3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.

3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. 33” tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.

3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, Some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.

4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.

5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
