  • CROSS COUNTRY FUN

A modified cross country was held on Thursday 18 September, 2020, for students aged 8 and over.

Mr Sams designed a great little course in the school playground. Students aged 8, 9 and 10 years com-

pleted five laps of the course, which equated to 2 kilometres, and students aged 11, 12 and 13 years ran

seven laps, which was 3 kilometres.

Pictured below and on page 5 are students enjoying the

event and putting in a great effort around the course. Pic-

tured right are four of the top placegetters from Stage 3.

    PEER SUPPORT

Last week, children revised what they have learned

about resilience and discussed the people who

show them support. Through a story, the children

    Isabella KW Kadance KW

    Evelyn 2L Hayleigh 2L

    Skye-Rose 1/2P Callan 3C

    Chelsea 3/4S Jayda 4M

    Isabella 5M Joey 5M

    Madison 5/6G Matilda 5M

    Samantha 6B

identified where the character had used her per-

sonal qualities, strengths and skills to help her

overcome challenges. They identified times when

she needed support to continue. The children dis-

cussed a range of challenges and determined the

best person to approach for support. They consoli-

dated the protective factors for resilience by revis-

ing their own strengths and skills and identifying 5

people they can go to for support.

This week, we introduced a 3-step model to en-

courage resilient responses; Pause, Plan, Proceed.

The children took part in an activity to identify their

feelings and the immediate effects on their bodies

ie butterflies in their stomach. The normalcy of feel-

ings was acknowledged and the importance of be-

ing proactive was emphasized. The children

learned that pausing when they are emotional can

be helpful. They can do this by being still, taking a

deep breath or counting to ten. Pausing gives chil-

dren space to see a situation more accurately be-

    fore planning a response.

Ask your child to describe the 3 steps of the model

and what is involved in each one. Also, remind

your child of their qualities and skills and encour-

age them to ask for help in challenging situations.

    PRODUCTIVE TERM FOR K-2

It has been a busy and productive term in K-2 and

it has been wonderful to watch the students grow

and develop. This term, Kindergarten has been

learning about 2D and 3D shapes and number pat-

terns. They have been reading Aranea by Jenny

Wagner, a book about spiders and learning how to

    write informative texts.

1R has been focusing on healthy eating and mak-

ing healthy choices. They have planted some yum-

my strawberry plants (Chantelle and Kayden pic-

tured below) and have been watering them each

day. It will be wonderful to see how much they

    have grown over the holidays.

1/2P have been working on researching Australian

animals and are writing their own reports (Mila pic-

tured below). Mrs Pasierbek is very impressed with

their research skills and ability to write informative

    texts.

2L has been producing wonderful spring artworks

using a variety of mediums. They have been prac-

tising their typing skills and writing their stories on

    the computer.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the

teachers and Learning Support officers for all their

hard work this term and on their behalf we hope all

our students have a safe and happy holiday. We

look forward to seeing you in Term 4.

  • 6B WEBCAST FROM TARONGA ZOO

6B enjoyed an interesting webcast from Taronga

Zoo with a koala expert. They learnt about koala

behaviour, the impact of habitat destruction and

worked on design ideas for koala crossings. We

were able to participate in a live Q&A session with

Andrew who works as a zookeeper and meet a

young koala named Baxter, pictured below.

  • looking at old photos and encouraging your child to

have positive and respectful relationships with family

members and important close family friends.

Help your child develop social skills and develop peer

friendships by modelling these skills to them. Children

learn social skills by observing how the people around

them interact with each other. You are their role mod-

el! Encourage your children to play with friends and

    socialise.

Helping your child to develop empathy involves provid-

ing your child opportunities to practice interacting with

others in a kind and caring way. Again, you are their

role model. They need to be able to see you interact

with others in this way. Talk to your child about being

aware of others feelings and not making judgements,

noticing when their friends are sad or needing support

and needing to listen to others.

Recognise when your children are experiencing feel-

ings like sadness, anger, frustration or loneliness. Talk

with them and let them know it is ok to have those

feelings. As a parent we try to fix our children’s prob-

lems straight away to protect them. Support them to

experience these feelings of everyday life and over-

    come them.

    BUILDING RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN

    PART 2

    Building supportive relationships

Quality relationships are important for resilience.

You can help develop your child’s resilience by help-

ing them build and strengthen their relationships with

other children, and with significant adults in their

lives – including your parent-child relationship.

It is important to remember to:

    • spend quality time with your child

    • support your child to build relationships

    with other adults

    • help your child develop social skills and

    friendships with peers

    • help your child to develop empathy

Spending quality time with your child or children in-

volves making a connection with them. You can do

this by doing something together that you both en-

joy. It could be bike riding, walking the family dog,

cooking, gardening or watching your favourite family

movie together. You can also use this together time

to talk with each other and make a connection.

Talk to your child or children about things that are

happening for them. Talk about what is happening at

school, what interests they have, what they dislike.

Ask them open questions like “Tell me about your

day”, rather than “did you have a good day”. You

may get more than just a simple “yes” or “no” an-

    swer.

Listen carefully to your child or children. They may

be telling you something they dislike or something

that is worrying them. Try to remember that they

have a different view on the world. What might seem

trivial to you may not be for them. Help them find

ways to solve their problems rather than trying to fix

things for them. When your child is having a hard

time ask them how you can support them.

Support your child or children to build positive rela-

tionships with other adults. This can be done through

family connections and involvement in local commu-

nity activities. Help your children connect with family

history through storytelling of family member history,
