Since its first studentsgraduated in 1877, HastingsHigh School, like every com-munity’s high school, hashelped discover potential,launch careers, and changelives. For the next severalweeks , the Reminder plansto visit with current graduat-ing seniors and with pastgraduates to explore whyHastings High School hasbeen so meaningful in theirlives.

Competition has alwaysbeen a big factor in MeganDenny’s life, but she’s quickto point out that it’s a goodsense of competition that hashelped her to succeed andhas allowed her to help oth-ers around her succeed.

“I just see everyonearound me so fired up aboutHastings High School,” saysDenny,18. “It’s a spirit kindof thing in everything. Youknow you represent Hastingsand you don’t want to disap-point.”

Denny points to programslike athletics and music aswell as events like ScienceOlympiad that bring out thebest in students and thatshine a spotlight on HastingsHigh School.

“The football team wentto the second round of theplayoffs last year, the first

time we’ve ever gone thatfar,” she says. “It was just sofun to see everyone aroundme with so much spirit. Wehave Saxon Pride.”

It’s that pride and thecompetition to representHastings High School in thebest possible way thatDenny is counting on to helpher make the transition tocollege life at RhodesCollege in Memphis, a liber-al arts school featured as a“college that changes lives”in a book with a similarname by Laura Pope.

“I was consideringKalamazoo College andRhodes,” reports Denny,“and, if I had stayed closer tohome, I could watch mybrother’s (eighth graderAaron) high school years.But, when my dad and I vis-ited Memphis, I loved thecity.

“Rhodes is a small college-- about twice the size ofHastings High School -- but,if the college doesn’t havesomething, it’s right there inthe city.”

Another city or residencewill be something new forDenny who, like many of hercolleagues, has spent herentire life in Hastings.

“Yep, kindergartenthrough 12th grade,” shesmiles, “and that’s not evencounting Noah’s ArkPreSchool.”

She’ll miss friends thatshe’s had through all thosetransitions, including BrianGraybill who she remembersas a kindergarten friend andwho still remains a closefriend.

Denny also recognizes,though, that high schoolgraduation is a symbol oflife’s transition necessities

which brings some nervous-ness but some eager antici-pation, too.

“I’ve been to Chicago andI’ve been to New York,”Denny points out, “so it’s notlike I’m unfamiliar with bigcities. My dad and I spenttwo days in Memphis and itjust felt like such a greatcity.”

Part of that initial impres-sion did include a stop on thecity’s famed Beale St. whereDenny was impressed by thecity’s impressionistic soundof blues music -- soimpressed, in fact, that shemay even continue her loveof music by minoring inmusic at Rhodes.

In the Hastings HighSchool music program,Denny was a percussionistand carries experience onkey boards, the snare drum,the timpani, and the bassdrum.

Denny already plans todouble major in biochem-istry, as a possible pre-med-ical course of study, and inhistory because “I absolutely

love it.”Though she admits to

being a bit nervous about thecoming experience, Dennycarries the confidence of asolid academic foundationbuilt, in part, by scienceteacher Martin Buehler.

“Mr. Buehler taught mehow to learn on my own,”she contends. “I took everyhonors advanced placementcourse I could and gotinvolved in as many otheractivities as I could.”

That included music,including four years in themarching band, two as drummajor, as well as ScienceOlympiad, Quiz Bowl, soc-cer, and basketball. It wasthe other activities thatDenny counts as being keyto the important componentof diversity that her highschool years offered.

“I met so many peoplefrom other areas which mademe realize how much we dohave at Hastings HighSchool,” says Denny, vividlyrecalling one encounter witha Science Olympiad com-petitor from Ann Arbor’sPioneer High School. “Wewere comparing AP classesand she told me how herhigh school offered onlytwo and anything else had tobe independent study. Wehave five AP courses and itmade me feel so fortunate.”

That was just one edge ofmany that Denny will creditHastings High School foroffering her, in addition tothe atmosphere in whichboth teachers and fellow stu-dents pushed her to do her

best.“There were about seven
