New Mission Project Idea!

Following is an excerpt from “The Changing Tides” which is a publication distributed by Back

Bay Mission. I found the article about crocheting

sleeping mats for the homeless fascinating and inspirational! See what you think.......

“Fred and Caroline Dunaway recently stopped by

Back Bay Mission with gifts for the homeless:

sleeping mats. Caroline, a Mississippi native, was on

her computer and was intrigued by an article about

mats for the homeless. Caroline liked the idea of

recycling plastic bags, such as grocery bags, to make

them. The mats were made to help comfort the

homeless; keep them off of the wet ground. Caroline

researched how to make these and found them to be

really easy for people who already knew how to

crochet. Caroline developed a comfortable carrying

strap for the mat that makes it easy to tote. She said,

“Her group has people that can crochet and ones that

cannot. The ones that do not crochet help with the

cutting of the plastic bags.” If you are interested in

viewing how to make the mats there are several

videos on the internet. One that we liked can be

viewed at: www.youtube.com/watch?

Perhaps this is something new for HCC to do for the homeless here in our area?

July 17

Worship: 9th Sunday after Pentecost Scriptures: Genesis 18:1-10a; Psalm 16;

Colossians 1:15-28; Luke 10:38-42 Sermon: “Listening, Learning and Living” Discipleship encompasses a call to ground our daily living in the word of God. We are called to listen to God’s word of grace, and then let it shape our living. In spite of the ways we fall short as disciples as we live in God’s reign, it is Christ - and not our own actions - that holds all together.

July 24

Worship: 10th Sunday after Pentecost Scriptures: Genesis 18:20-32; Psalm 138; Colossians 2:6-15(16-19); Luke 11:1-13 Sermon: “Passion of Prayer”

Prayer is at the heart of discipleship. Prayer is at the heart of our relationship with God. The readings for today lift up God’s nature of love and compassion; they assure us of God’s readiness to hear and attend to our prayers. As we pray, we know God more fully, and as we know God more fully we pray confidently and with persistence.

Worship Schedule

for July 2016

July 31

Worship: 11th Sunday after Pentecost Scriptures: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 18-23; Psalm 49:

1-12; Colossians 3:1-11; Luke 12:13-21 Sermon: “Life Consists of.....” What is important in the life of a disciple? Jesus tells a parable about a rich farmer who allowed love of possessions to dominate life. Jesus warns against all kinds of greed - which the letter to Colossians identifies as “idolatry”. Life consists of living in ways that are rich toward God.

Connor Thornton _____________________________________________________________________________________ Just want to say thank you for the nice gift for the little part I played in Sunday School. Since I only subbed once, I hope I can repay and do more in the next season! The one time showed me what a nice group of young people we have here in our church. Most sincerely, Gerry Heckler
