HARVARD BUSINESS PUBLISHING for Educators

INDIA

OUR MISSION:

HARVARD BUSINESS PUBLISHING is a nonprofit, wholly owned subsidiary of Harvard University. We publish management ideas in formats including print, digital print, and eLearning to address the needs of educational institutions, corporations, and individual managers. The Harvard Businss Publishing Higher Education group provides participant- centered course materials that stimulate students’ thinking and prepare learners for managerial decision making. Harvard Business Publishing course materials are ideal for undergraduate, MBA, and executive education programs.

TO IMPROVE THE PRACTICE OF MANAGEMENT AND ITS IMPACT IN A CHANGING WORLD

WHY PARTICIPANT-CENTERED LEARNING? Pioneered by Harvard Business School faculty in the 1920s, the case method brings real-life business dilemmas to life in the classroom. Students enjoy the lively, participatory nature of an approach that enables them to play an active role in the learning process by developing strategies, tactics, and solutions.

A study by the National Training Laboratories on learning methods found that participatory teaching methods lead to high levels of learning retention among students. Participant-centered learning (PCL) supports holistic learning for the real world by going beyond the ‘knowing’ (facts and frameworks) aspect of the learning process, and emphasizing the ‘doing’ (execution) and ‘being’ (self-awareness and values) aspects.

CHALLENGES OF IMPLEMENTING THE CASE METHOD IN INDIA

The Indian education system has a unique set of challenges for implementing participant-centered learning:

¡ Instructors have limited time for research and preparation and may have limited exposure to the case method pedagogy.

¡Students can find it difficult to adapt to the case method because they have been long used to lectures and notes.

ADDRESSING THESE CHALLENGES

Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) collaborates with Indian management educators to develop solutions that address their unique needs:

¡HBP helps Indian faculty adopt the case method in their classrooms through teaching workshops, videos, and print tips for case teaching, and a vibrant educator community on our web site designed for sharing best practices.

¡For students, the online Case Analysis Coach introduces the key concepts and processes required for analyzing business case studies, ideal for students interpreting a case for the first time.

MANAGING THE COST OF COURSE MATERIALS

Business schools in India grapple with limited budgets due to the low fee structure compared to Western schools. To help address this issue, HBP offers Unlimited Catalog Access agreements (site licenses). These agreements provide unlimited use of HBP resources at a fraction of the U.S. cost. They also offer convenient quarterly or annual payment.

“A good discussion leader guides students toward the discovery of critical insights and uncovering of broader lessons through thoughtful questioning, listening, and responding.” Christensen Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard Business School
