For years, you worked alongside yourandfather in his garden and enjoyed the

continue the tradition in your own back-ard. Here are some tips to ensure you getour vegetable garden off to a good start.
Select the proper site for your garden.egetables require good soil, water andght. Take some samples of soil from theeas you are considering and have themsted. This will tell you what the pH of theil is and what you need to do to adjust it.e ideal site would require very little
mending. It would also have a spigot near-y, or better yet, a sprinkler you can run ontimer. Don't select a site far away from the
spigot and waste time running back and
forth with a watering can. Make sure the siteyou choose receives eight hours of full sunper day. Any less than that, and your veg-etables may suffer.
Prep the site accordingly. Till up all of thegrass and mix in some fertilizer and compostto enrich the soil. Slow-release, general-pur-pose fertilizer and a couple inches of com-post are ideal. These will add nutrients to thesoil and improve drainage. If you need toadjust the pH, you may add the amendmentsnow. Water the soil thoroughly to help thefertilizer dissolve into the soil.
Choose the right plants. Some vegeta-bles are easier to grow than others. Someare hardier than others. Some are more suit-ed to areas than others. Find out what will
work best for your situation and select dis-
ease-resistant varieties. Some of the easieroptions may include carrots, cucumbers, green beans, herbs, lettuce, peas, peppers, spinach, squash and tomatoes. You couldplant seed, but since you are just beginning, you might have better results if you buyseedlings. Start off small with a few plantsand add to your garden over time as yougain more experience and become moreconfident.
Plant at the appropriate time. Whilesome plants can be put out in the earlyspring, others must be put out after the firstfrost. Find out when the best time is to plantand do so carefully, following the directionson the labels, spacing out the plants proper-ly and watering them well. If you are plant-

You love to garden and have a menagerietools and equipment to prove it. You name it,nd you probably have it. While you storeuch of your tools in your garden shed, it isarting to get full. You need some additionalorage space and a second shed is out of theuestion. Your spouse would have a fit. It's timeou got creative and came up with some alter-ative storage solutions.
There are many places around your lawnnd garden where you can store your tools.ees, bushes, planting beds, woodpiles andnces all provide excellent coverage. Just
stash your large tools and equipment behind
the areas and retrieve them as needed. For the storage of smaller tools and equip-ment, consider purchasing some sort of plasticbin. Several are available, some of which mayserve a dual purpose. Some bins may serve asbenches with storage inside, while others maybe constructed to resemble boulders and thelike and serve as landscaping features. Youcan place these bins almost anywhere, in theyard or on a deck.
You can get creative and make your ownstorage solutions from wood. You may build abench running the length of your deck with stor-age inside or add doors all the way aroundunderneath for a unique storage area. Youmay construct a low platform and fence it in forthe storage of your garbage cans. The choiceis yours.
You don't have to extend your garage or
add another garden shed to house all of yourtools and equipments. You just have to get cre-ative and look for areas where you can tuckthings out of sight. When possible, store itemsclose to where they will be used. You will makemore efficient use of your time that way.Imagine having your pruning shears tuckedaway in a bench under your big oak tree ratherthan 25 feet up the hill in your garage. Howmuch easier they would be to retrieve and use.

Bit by bit, you've been updating yourkitchen, refacing the cabinets, repainting thewalls and replacing the light fixtures. You'veordered new countertops, and whileinstalling those, you'd also like to replaceyour sink. The cast iron sink currently in yourkitchen has seen better days. Not only is itold, but it's stained and just doesn't work forall of the cooking you do. The time has cometo go shopping, and get ready, the numberof choices available will astound you.
There are many types of kitchen sinks onthe market today, and the materials they aremade of vary just as much as the styles. Some of the more common styles include:

Drake first participated in the Junior DuckStamp program when he was in fifth grade. He has participated in the program everyyear for the past seven years. "The programhas been excellent in promoting conservationand the arts, which are a huge part of Drakeslife" said Drakes mother, Jean Schlosser.
Students from around the United States sub-mit drawings to their state for judging.Winners from these competitions, called the"Best of Show," are then submitted to theFederal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest.
